  • This song is all about a broken promise to Scott Weiland's fiance as his heroin addiction persisted while recording Stone Temple Pilot's second album "Purple". It's fascinating to watch the music video and see the correlation between the silent film actor and the growing nose, and Scott's story. Let's take another dive into one of STP's most famous songs!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Stone Temple Pilots perfoirming "Interstate Love Song" for the first time.

Scott Weiland was a incredible singer. The progression of his voice from album to album was mind blowing. STP was over looked by critics cause they believed Weiland sounded like Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. I think they were deaf. Huge fan of STP and Velvet Revolver.

That musical hook you're hearing is the sheer brilliance of their bassist and principal songwriter Robert DeLeo. If you listen close to the bass you can hear these melodies and polyrhythms underneath everything driving everything forward. Scott was the cherry on top of this insanely talented group, if you're looking for more of how he can go from delicate to powerful check out the songs "Days of the Week" "Big Empty" and "Dead and Bloated". He had such a range of emotions and sounds that almost no two songs even sound like the same singer.

I’ve been listening to this song for 30 years, and as a composer who has written classical, jazz and alternative, I have to say that this is one of the best songs ever written.
The melodies are exceptional throughout, the chord structures are extremely complex and as you stated, the changing time signatures make the song even more compelling.
But what makes this song almost unequalled is something you said: oh no, it can’t be over, it’s too short.
I swear on my life that I have heard at least five people literally say those words out loud over the years. Generations of people.
Back in 92 I remember people saying that, and everyone around them nods in agreement.
This is a 4 minute song that people from different times, different generations and different backgrounds can’t get enough of and universally want more of.
    What more can music be?
That’s what makes it one of the best songs of all time

I REALLY wish I had no anxiety, because when I perform this song alone I can sound almost 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 to Scott here. Am I as good as him? Not even close. I'm Self-taught. But I think this song specifically works very well with my natural range. I don't need to strain to hit any notes, I get the same natural grit, it just.... Sounds like him. There are only SLIGHT differences that I can't explain.
But I couldn't ever seek lessons because I'm so scared to sing in front of other people, it's one of the most disappointing things about myself because objectively, I know I'm really good. But without being able to really show anyone, I don't know HOW good I am, where I fall short, what I need to Improve, etc....

In addition to using the studio version of the song (which I prefer to the live version), the video itself is also *very* well done. STP were dismissed as "fifth-rate Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains wannabes" when they first came out and Scott was particularly maligned for his ever-evolving vocal style - accused of trying to sound just like Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain, or whoever else at different times but that was the beauty of Scott's talent. Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots are both underrated. And there’s nothing better than 90’s music videos. I always assumed they purposefully ended songs like these early and often without resolve to leave you wanting more, which in turn causes you to buy the album so you can listen to it again and again since streaming and downloads weren’t a thing.

Gosh I love the catch to the change for common time to a 1-2 and back to common time. The attention to detail you have is incredible. Now when I hear this song I can't unhear that shift in time signatures

I’m so glad you reviewed another STP song. I have their complete works. So many great songs. So underrated. Scott was an amazing vocalist!! So versatile. His solo albums are wonderful. I cried when we lost him. Such a tortured soul. Would love to see you cover more, Big Empty, Creep, Sour Girl, Cracker Man….RIP Scott 💜

You need to check out Fall to Pieces. Scott REALLY belts it out on that one. You will ❤ it!

I love this song tho I had never seen the video. Granted I have been a fan of STP since their first record Core. It's so good to see your reactions. You of course being a classically trained singer whose voice is so powerful. (I've seen a few of your performance vids, WOW!) To see you enjoying other music is a total treat. Goes to show again what I've always said. Music truly IS a universal language. I love it! Hope you're getting plenty of rest with the new addition!!!! Love ya!

Scott is one of my favorite vocalists. You are without question my favorite UA-cam music analyst. I learn so very much from you about WHY I like something or someone so much. Thanks for this and all your videos!
*I'll seemingly never stop admiring the timing in "Possum Kingdom" though I don't understand why it works.

I love that you come to the same conclusion as everyone... The only thing wrong with this song is that it's too damn short!

Scott was crazy versatile. He had a Bowie-like ability to switch up his style to the point where his vocals are hardly recognizable as him.

One of the last great frontmen it seems like with how he’d be and perform during concerts.

@@jordan-xe2yb I disagree. Both were incredible in their own right, and it'd be unfair to sell Bowie short.

As a part time dj who's show covers the history of rock , I must say you bring a flare to music appreciation. You take it from listening to music to hearing what the songs and singers are all about.

So nostalgic! This man was so simple and subtle in his musical abilities but yet it’s so complex and perfect for “grunge” this man is extremely missed in this genre
