Hope we will see an O’Brien interview someday.
I'm subbed to both channels Rick. A YT friend of mine (that I know in real life who's in the business) and myself done a music based stream and he beams about you and your contributions to the craft. Big thumbs up.
It’s really annoying to interview someone and keep interrupting them. Especially when it sounds like they’re going to say something important or insightful. What a mess.
Listen to Jim Croce's I Got A Name. The walkdown throughout and on the end is almost identical. Pretty cool.
Loved this band since they started - I had no idea how thoughtful and soft-spoken Robert DeLeo was outside of his rock star persona.
Unsure, hasn't Rick invited Robert on B/4?
@@R.Akerman-oz1tf this interview was done a year ago
Jeff Carlisi from 38 Special is as well. Great underrated guitar player, articulate, soft spoken. Love these insights.
Well, Robert was never known for being a rock 'n' roll wildman 😎
Then you clearly haven't loved this band since they started. Robert hasn't changed since the beginning of STP
Robert DeLeo needs to be a regular guest. I can watch these two talk music endlessly.
Agreed
I didn’t realize that Robert wrote these lead guitar parts. He’s such an outstanding musician. I just love the STP’s music!
Rhythm guitar parts.
@@dmitryowenshe's wrote the main riffs for a LOT of their songs. Including PLUSH CREEP VASOLINE WICKED GARDEN N MANY MORE
@BamaRockstar85
I'm very aware of that. I'm a guitarist (and also a drummer, bassist and singer), so I've read multiple interviews with him and his brother in Guitar World since the band first hit the scene.
@@dmitryowens Oh? I was under the impression they were a three piece - drums, bass, and lead guitar with Scott singing but not playing an instrument. Who’s the rhythm guitar player?
Interesting to hear him say Brendan wanted the record to sound live. I always thought it sounded heavily produced, but I’m not much of a musician so what do I know!
Robert is so talented it's borderline unfair. I absolutely love the fact that Rick can pinpoint Robert's influences at the drop of a hat. I was NOT expecting to learn that there was a straight line between Antonio Carlos Jobim and Interstate Love Song.
Rick is an extremely knowledgeable musician. His interviews always amazes me how well he can pull out the influences seemingly with ease.
(Plays Bossa nylon version) My head explodes. I'll never hear it the same way again. Brilliant.
i would listen Robert talk about music all day.
💯
yeah me too. wish rick thought the same and wouldn't interrupt him all the time
@@DrCheeks💯👌
@@DrCheeks dude I didn’t realize it until you said something but holy shit he won’t let the dude even finish a sentence
@@fdsa8496 this is edited, that's why it sounds like that.
STP. My favorite band. I've seen the full interview, but every now and then, I watch 'em again.
Interstate is the summer song of our youth in the 90's.
That man is bad as fuck on the bass and has inspired my bass playing for about 16 years now. And he's such a skilled songwriter too! Much respect.
Right
Interstate Love Song is my favorite song of the grunge era, which is saying something as there were very many brilliant songs. I liked the whole album and listen to it to this day.
Was thinking the same thing. This is probably my fav song from the era. It always sounds fresh. No matter how many times I've heard it.
Same. I listen to this every single day
The song automatically sets me back to a specific memory, it had that type of an effect on me. It’s a time capsule.
I love listening to creators wax nostalgic about songs that were so big in my life when they released.
30 years later I'm still deeply in love with this song. Thank you, STP!
And Jesus, wow, I never knew they recorded that album mostly all live in studio. And in 11 days. That's where inspiration and professionalism meet. It puts its sound in a new perspective.
Robert was always my favorite element of STP- his writing and bass style really was such a huge part of what made that band magic
Interstate Love Song makes STP a top 20 all time rock band. I was so lucky to see them in concert. Such a great show. Scott was so charismatic. I treasure that as one of my memories.
One of the most underrated bass players!
Man, I love Roberts bass lines in STP. Such an underrated bassist. Interstate is in the list of my all time fav songs.
I love Robert's songwriting. The perfect balance of melody, simplicity and complexity.
The best music to come out of any decade is the music that's timeless, and this song might be the best one to come out of the 90's.
agreed
My alltime fav song by STP. Was lucky enough to see them in NY with Scott on the '08 reunion tour
Definitely one of the awesome 90s songs of my youth, used to knock the wind out of me when I heard it on the radio as an 8 or 10 year old. Still does. RIP Scott 🙏
This has been a favorite song since I first heard it ~30 years ago!
Not only a great player & songwriter, Robert had a huge style thing that added to the STP vibe.... great great band from that scene
He is a brilliant songwriter and musician!! STP will always be one of the greatest bands of all time!!
Interstate love song is my favorite song off all time…
The lyrics, make sense when he talks about “southern train” it makes sense they recorded it at “southern tracks”. Not sure if it’s similar but I’d like to think it relates.
What a talented musician and composer. Seems like a mellow, thoughtful down to earth dude. Always was a fan of him and STP, even moreso after viewing this entire interview. RIP Scott
"Interstate Love Song", has that Jim Croci "I Got a Name" feel to it.
Would love to hear STP do a cover of The Guess Who's "Undone".
Totally! I hear that bass line.
That acoustic into always makes me glad! Time to CRANK IT!!
(the riff reminds me of the riff from "I Got A Name " by Jim Croce. )
that's because the riff is from "I Got A Name" lol
Every time I think I can do without this Rick Beato video, he proves me wrong
dudes fn brilliant! what a band and Scott was an true artist and performer in every sense . had many good days listening to STP inmy youth and still do
One of the most special moments ever captured in rock music. Thank you, Rick Beato!
So bluesy yet so hip at the time. Robert is a talent for sure. One of my favourite songs. Rest In Power Scott.
Whos scott?
@@trteeerryfse-wy2ww Scott Weiland
Could listen to someone play acoustic guitar like that all day.
@@trteeerryfse-wy2wwScott Weiland was the lead singer of STP
I love how well-spoken Robert is! Such an interesting man!
This interview is probably my favorite out of all the ones i've seen on the main channel.
Very talented musician and awesome person!
The powerhouse behind STP!
It's always great to re-watch these clips. Robert is such a bad ass and a gentleman at the same time 🤘🏻✊🏻✌🏻
what a tune. I played this on endless loop back when it was released.
I love Robert's stage presence, his smooth shuffle. He's so humble. What an amazing musician.
THank-you Rick.
I know I take these geniuses for granted....love this channel and hearing all that goes into these timeless songs
As time passes, glad to see STP finally getting their flowers.
Another terrific interview! Will listen to the full program.
Another absolutely tremendous interview. Totally love it! Great stuff, Rick as always!
The riff at the 2:19 mark in the interview has great similarity to Jim Croce's " I got a Name" listen to Interstate and IGaN back to back and it will surprise you.
I love STP, and Robert is amazing...but I'm glad someone else mentioned this, because I've noticed that too...the hook riff is basically a note for note copy of Croces I Got a Name cadence
Ha! I just posted that too 😊
@@ericleiter6179 Led Zeppelin did it before Croce in "Traveling Riverside Blues."
@trashychannel8150 yeah but that wasn't released till 1990 but good catch
By far my favorite STP song....the melody, the changes, the bridge particularly just pierces my heart! Sublime, sad, melancholic.
Trippin a hole is still one of my favorite bass lines to play
It'll wear them fingers out after playing it a few times in a row!
So amazing to listen and watch, this is one of the best channels on YT, thank you Rick Beato
I got to see STP with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Boise Idaho around the year 2000 it was a hell of a show
I saw them on that tour when they played in NJ and have to agree both bands put on a top notch performance.
Saw them at William and Mary hall in Virginia. In 95, I think? Right after the purple album came out, and they were getting big. Awesome show!
my favorite bass line to play, by far. Legit perfection. Love smokin some weed, closing my eyes , going to narnia, and running through that jam. PERFECTION.
I was jamming out to this today. Love that song.
Love it! DeLeo and Beato in top form. This is fantastic and makes listening to STP even better. So musical.
What a fantastic song Robert, great chords. Miss Scott. A big fan. What a voice.
Fantastic Rick Beato interview....
So glad I saw these guys live. Amazing show, amazing music. Core is so under appreciated for how hard and energetic it is.
One of my favorite songs to drum along to
Robert looks and sounds so healthy. So happy to see that.
Robert may not realize it but the hook riff from ILS is the same as the bass sub-hook riff from Jim Croce's "I Got a Name." That's the first thing I thought when I heard this song. LOVE IT.
Great stuff! Cool interview
One of many reasons to watch the interview’s❤
So cool! Great interview!
Awesome interview!
The Jamerson of the grunge era. Just a sublime taste for melody, chord voicings, playing in the pocket, tone, musicianship, etc. Robert belongs in the conversation of all time great rock bassists.
thank you for showing how one of my favorite STP songs evolved......
Saw The og STP in 2010, I was 18, and star struck as soon as they got on stage
This is awesome! I had no idea this started as a Bossa. Makes sense!
what a well spoken modest man...and what a talent
the band I'm in is learning this song for the eclipse festival near us
i needed to see this interview
Once again Rick show he is the King of musician interview,.....WOW
as a bass player, i love this song so much
Never knew Robert wrote these songs but wow it makes so much sense 🔥🔥
Robert DeLeo 😎✌️🙏🙌
This band is practically the Soundtrack to Gen X. I loved them so much.
I love the direction Rick is taking UA-cam for all of us
To see the insights of the original author of this amazing song is.....awesome. To take a 80's quote.
Loved STP in my teenage years, love STP now. A very important band to me.
I figured you would revisit him because his birthday was a couple weeks ago. Great interview RB
Tiny Music makes so much more sense now. My absolute favorite album but now I know where so may of those chords and progressions came from. Awesome
This was the first song I heard from them! Discovered them from guitar hero and loved the song!!
Great interview.
I'm stunned. I had no idea. How phenomenal.
Was never a really a fan, even though I heard all of their hits/watched all their early videos because they were on constant MTV rotation. However, a few years ago, I stumbled across the “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart” video here on UA-cam and it grabbed me. Since then I’ve reevaluated and at least appreciate STP’s musicality (always heard the Zeppelin influence). Seeing this Robert DeLeo interview makes me appreciate them even more; I had no idea he was the main songwriter. His bass playing is very impressive; challenging, interesting and tasteful without being overly technical and flashy. Leaps and bounds from most of his pop grunge bassist peers.
Totally...same here Brother!!!!
My favorite riff of all time!
Core was my first CD and Purple is my favorite STP album
Totally agree. I put that album right up there with one of the best from the first song to kitchen wear and candy bars. It is a great listening experience. Of course my favorite song is Silvergun Superman.
As a bass player it was fun to learn your stuff. Definitely some new territory to delve into
One of the greatest bass lines, IMO. I absolutely love playing it.
If the entire channel were interviews like this one and the billy corgan one where they sit down and dissect the songs and their development I would subscribe and watch every one of them. Interviews like these help me to reconsider my own rhythms and arrangements. I have lots of progressions that I do that I love but don’t quite fit into an arrangement or transition well. So I really need to reconsider how they are played.
Wow, what a fascinating guy. I need to see the entire interview.
I remember several years ago when I engineered and was FOH mixer for my radio station who had Darius Rucker for an "Up Close & Personal" performance, Darius saying that ILS was one of his all time favorite songs
Interstate love song is a great song. Not a huge STP fan but have huge respect for them as musicians and performers.
The DJ at the club I worked at would sneak some tunes from Core into his dance playlist when STP first broke. Robert is up there with my favorite interviews with Rick
My all time favorite song. I have it in my will that it will be played at my funeral. At some of the most trying times in my life, I would hear this song and know everything would be ok.
rocks most under recognized bass player/ song writer. he is a legend now. some of the most amazing songs of 90s came from stp
I wonder how much he thinks about Scott Wieland. Can't believe it has been almost 9 years since he passed away.
Purple is an amazing listen. One of my all time favorites!
No other host can get deep and nerdy with musical guests. I know nothing about making music, so these conversations really demystify why I like music.
This band is amazing and should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...He is an underrated musician in MHO...
We need a interview with Brendan O'Brien. This guy made history behind the mixing decks
The first 4 albums are all I ever listened to what amazing music this band made in their prime
such a unic band, one of my favourites, their chord progressions no band ever come with that
Wow! That was great, is there gonna be more with Robert?
