Over the past year, i've done most of the DIY work in my house after watching your videos.
After spending an hour yesterday trying to wire a second switch without success, i found this video and managed to wire it correctly within 5 mins.

I'm an electrician in the United States and found this video quite interesting because of the differences in how things are done in our different areas. Even little differences in the terminology you use is enlightening, such as calling one of your wires the "ground" a term which, here, would be used for that green wire you folded back inside. Here, our panel boards are usually installed vertically. For a "three-way" switching set up we would have to also change the first switch out from a "single-pole" switch to a "three-way" or "three-terminal" switch, instead of simply changing the existing wiring format around for the same switch device. Unless I misunderstood, it looks like all of your switches can be set up for either three-way or single pole. It appears you have some nice remodel boxes as well, allowing snug fit and built-in plaster board anchoring clamps. We have similar items, but their design is quite different. Thanks for sharing!

Hi David,
Yes the terminology and set up is much different in different countries. I believe in the US you call the live wire the "hot" wire. Over here the Live wire (phase) often gets called the Live or the Line wire or is often just labelled up as the "L" on most switches etc.
With regards to the first switch that was added to to make it a two way lighting arrangement, you can do this in most cases without changing the original switch but sometimes you have to swap it for a two way switch. In the UK we have one way and two way switches but the cost between the two is minimal and so some electrical shops only stock the two way as it can be used on a one way or two way lighting circuit- hence many light switches are two way and so just need the additional cable and switch to make a two way lighting circuit.

Tip, when using rods, only turn in the direction that tightens the connection!
When our solar panels were installed, the young electrician, turned them back and forth to loosen a stuck rod.
That rod section is still in my wall.
I had to lend him mine to finish the job!

Great video. I loved the way you explained the routing of the new cables. I remember when cables were chased into walls. Not on walls like those in the video obviously. Is that still done? I hate those horrible plastic channels they stick to walls nowadays. Ugly, intrusive bloody things that ruin the look of the walls.

In the usa the dual switching setup actually involves using "three way" switches. three way switches have three terminals, a common that switches between one of the other two terminals. So the line/hot wire is connected to one of the switches common terminals and the load wire is connected to the other common terminal. the two othe terminals on each switch are connected to the opposite switch and called "travelers" The cool thing is that "4 way" switches can be installed in between two "3 way" switches so that the same light(s) can be turned on or of from ANY number of switches! 4way switches LOOK like dpdt switches but actually they switch back and forth between the the 2 poles switching the travelers on the three way switches! Really a clever set up when one wants to have multiple switches to control same fixture(s)
It is amazing how different countries do things and name things! It is so similar really but would stick out like a sore thumb if installed in the wrong country! People would just say "WHAT???"

When I cut into plasterboard I use a streight blade on my multitool and got a bit of electrical tape marking the thickness so I know when it's cut fully so don't need too use a Stanley knife I also use a screw in the centre too pull the cut peace out instead of screwdrivers less damage too be made

I don't think any of the probe has been removed, I'm sure it came like that. People keep saying it's not GS38 approved yet it is stamped with GS38.
I'm not a fan of these types of tester because they are so well insulated you can't always make contact with the tip. How long before someone using a GS38 approved tester is injured or killed because the tip did not make contact with the conductor!

***** Measure from the Top of the Prob to were the Plastic covers it.. my tester has covers that go over the probs to make it in to GS38, because GS38 as good as it is, dosnt allow enoguht metal to get in there and Touch things so in old days and cheating ..people take it off so you can make a good connection.
GS38 is more for Electricians to do the Live Testing of a circuit. As you are checking to see if it is Live, as a Electrician i would be expected to use GS38 on there, untill i know it is FULLY DEAD
Could you post the Model and Make.. its ok just need covers (sheves) over the Metal parts
Chauvin arnoux.. The only thing that makes it GS38 is the TIPS... without them on it dosnt complie to GS38
and with Full GS38 you really got to Stab it in ..Martindale VI-13800 Voltage Indicator has a cover that is Sprint loaded.. but still if you dont make connection and you think it is.. then could give you a wrong reading.. Voltage Detector might help as a back up.. but its not a 100% way

Exellent video I can follow very well apart from where the single RED wire is coming from that goes into L1 @ the top of the switch? I can see live & neutral coming from the one cable & connecting to COM & L1 respectivley @ the bottom of the light switch. Then you have the new cable being connected as directed. Again though, what is the single RED live in L1 @ the top of the light switch? Thanks in advance.

However I’m assuming that in the 2 gang the same theory applies but you need ‘Bridges’ to / from the 2nd switch to complete any circuits. Good tutorial only things I would of done different would be to use brown sleeving instead of red no need to identify the brown in the 3 core as it identifies itself (also sleeve other old switched live cables brown) and terminated the cpc into a 5a single connector block or even crimped so there was no lose cable at the switch.

I am a little confused however what happened around the 8:50 mark. You were pushing the rod up through the grommet and gave it help to get it past the bit of wood in the way.
Then all of a sudden you say 'We have now got the cable down at the switch.
All I saw was a rod going up the wall. What happened in between to get a cable at the switch.

Hi, the cable was pushed up into the loft (it was difficult as the wood was in the way). Then the end of the cable was taped to the end of the rod. My mate was in the loft feeding the cable down as I pulled the rod.

How did the rod locate the original hole in the loft as it appeared you would be pushing blindly?
Yes the rod was pushed up, if there is a piece of timber across the top of the wall you can drill a large hole of 25/30mm which will enable you to get the rod up- then the wire down. You would have no chance trying to get the rod up the existing hole for the cable.
one of the outlet of my two way switch does not have a "hot" wire. confirmed this with a multi meter. As a result the switches (both) will occasionally don't work. can I just leave the defective switch not connected and work the other like a regular one way??? please advise!!!

I have a 3 switch that operates 3 different lights ,I am tiling my kitchen and disconnected the kitchen light to put the cable through a hole in the tile ,should have taken a pic but didn’t,now put wires back where I thought and one switch now operates two lights one of the wires are in the wrong place if I take a pic can you help ?

Thanks for the video, I have watched so many of them now, they really are very useful and have saved me loads of time. Just recently whilst tiling the kitchen. Can you clarify something for me please? I have to replace my old sockets and switches with new chrome ones. The 1 gang etc sockets have been straight forward but I am struggling with an intermediate switch for the heating system. The one I bought looks different with the L1 and L2 located top and bottom not left and write, is this due to age and standards changing? Thanks.
Some manufacturers label the terminals differently but normally if they are in the same position on the new switch they do the same thing. It sounds strange to have a intermediate switch (or any light switch) for an heating system?

In Mexico the electricians dont follow color code...im having an issue connecting a "Gang"" doble light switch...but 4 wires are connected to the old switch...2 are live n 2 are not...how can i make the correct connection...one switch controlls the outside light n the other switch the livingroom light...
If you put one live wire in the top terminal of each switch, then put one of the other wires into one of the bottom terminals of each switch. If the wrong light comes on with the switch, try isolating the electricity again and swap the two bottom wires around.

When you said 1mm T&E on the video, is that OK for lighting? I've always used 1.5mm, but I'm only a DIYer.

Have you ever come across the situation where a 1940's house has 2 switches controlling 1 light. But with only a single twin & earth at each switch and the ceiling rose? I figured there must me a junction box somewhere along the installation but still don't understand how it would have been wired back then?! 🤷♂️
Yeah, I think I came across that once. I think it’s known as the “cable saving method”. I think it was widely used in the 1960’s as there was a copper shortage!

If you wanted to create double two way switches... would you just run two lengths of 3 core & earth and connect the earths at both ends? or can you do that with less wires between them?
Hi. Thanks for the video. I did my two way light, changed the plastic switch to the new flat plat ones. Now the two works only when the first switch is on then the second switch works and vice versa. I don't know what I have done wrong? All I did was copy the wires in the same way ie Same configuration as the old switch. would the l1 or l2 make a difference if the wires were swapped? Thanks.
That should not matter, just make sure that the switched live and permanent live are in L1 and L2 and then put the other three wires in the exact same terminals at both switches. What you have described can happen if the live and switched live are wired into com and L1 instead of L1 and L2.
Hi good video,,infact all you DIY videos are top qulity...im looking for a little advice 1 have a switch horrible white on that i play to swap out for a BG nexus metal one and the L1 / L2 Are indifferent places on the new switch...so am i right in say as long as the match up from the old switch to the new it should work right? all the commons seem to be in the same place though

Com and L1 is only used for one way switching. When you use the switch for two way switching you need to move the wire from com to L2 for it to work. This videos shows why-

Hi I have two light switches in my living room and want to remove the number one switch but obviously needs to be made permanently live before plastering over how to I wore it to make that happen? I have a yellow in Comm three red in L1 and black and blue in L2? Thanks
If you are plastering over it, the wires need to be permanently dead, not live.
You can disconnect them at the other switch in the room, but make sure you insulate them, so that they cannot be wired back into the switch.

Ultimate Handyman it’s not money making bud, it’s the institute of electrical engineers and the fire brigade Preventing things like Grenfel tower happening again. No alteration or extension of a circuit without 10mm bonding to gas and water and rcd protection of ALL circuits unless risk assessed. You should also be part p registered unless changing a socket or light fitting. There’s a right way, or - the wrong way.

There was an obstruction in the cavity that was preventing the cable access kit from reaching the top, so an access hole had to be cut in the plasterboard.

No, there is no insulation in this stud wall.

If your existing wiring is red and black you can still use red and black wires, but if the new colours have been used you should use the new harmonised colours.

The magnets are attracted to the screw heads which hold the plasterboard to the studs. Once you find the screw heads you find the studs ;-)

I think the manufacturers do this to confuse people.

It's a good idea to label the wires using masking tape before removing them.

It depends how many wires are going into the terminals, if there is only one or two, I often bend the conductor over, so the terminal screw can grip the wires better.

Normally in the UK there are either red and black or blue and brown wires at a light switch depending on when it was wired. The black wire is normally sleeved red, so that it signifies the wire is live at some point, likewise the blue wire should be sleeved brown to signify that being live.
The three core and earth used to join the two switches together used to be red, yellow and blue (which all should be sleeved red)
Or newer installations use brown, grey and black (sleeved brown)

It used to be the same here, but then they said to comply with British standards in cable identification the bare earth wire had to be sleeved with green and yellow sleeving.
Then in about 2005 they changed the wiring colours from red and black to brown and blue to fall in line with the rest of Europe.

Hi - Quick question: I've taken a 2 way dimmer switch off to change it to a normal switch and didn't make a note of where all the wires were going. I know you hear this all the time. The switch operated 2 sets of lights. 1 set was 1 way and works. However, the dimmer element which was on a 2 way feed doesn't? I've changed the wires(which are the old style and I have blue / yellow / Red) so they are like for like in both sides? However, I have a 3rd wire sticking down which is the ring way( I think - Its Grey with red wire inside it) I've connected this to the live and joined up both Comm's but still doesn't work? In the video you move 1 red wire from Comm to L2 for the 2 way switch? Why? Do you think I need to do that to give power to the 2nd set of lights? Happy to send you a picture if that helps? The L1 and COM is only used when it is wired as a single switch, when that is changed to a two way circuit the COM is moved to L2

Hi how to wire a dp switch with neon to a simple ligth on off connection switch live wiring thanks, swich works can't get the neon to come on off
I don't think it will work, as you only have a live and switched live. A DP switch with neon needs a live and neutral.
I know this video it's old, but any chance anyone knows what type of magnets I can use to see where I got wires in walls? (like one in 1:39)

The magnets will not detect wires, they will only find the screw heads, which hold the plasterboard to the studs- fave.co/2GTUFcZ

Not sure about over there, but in the US we call them single-pole and three-way switches, not one-way and two-way.
Thanks Kris, I think it differs in all countries of the world. Over here that are normally called one way, two way or if you want to add another switch it is called an intermediate switch.

i have a ceilin light with 3 blue wires n 3 brown wires for each bulb
but i dont have 3 blue wires in the ceilin how do i connect.?

The ones with multiple blue and brown wires can be a pain. Really the manufacturers should terminate them so that there is just one wire to terminate for the live and neutral but they are more interested in profit rather than ease of installation.
You have to connect all three blue wires together and join them to the neutral wires on the lighting circuit. You also have to connect all three lives together and connect them to the switched live on the lighting circuit.
The earth wires should also be connected if there are any (normally coloured green and yellow).
If there is anything you are unsure of it's probably best to get an electrician to install the new light for you ;-)
So in the two gang switch. L1 goes to the light? And L2 is the feed? Is that right?
Yes, but it doesn't matter which way around they go as long as those two wires go into those two terminals.
Don't get why you use a square backbox. Why not round ones?
