Two way light switching explained
Вставка

- This video shows how to wire a two way light switching circuit, or a two way lighting circuit. I believe this is called a three way switching circuit in some countries. This video shows how to change a one way lighting circuit into a two way lighting circuit and also includes schematic diagrams of a basic lighting circuit and a schematic drawing of a two way switching circuit. When wiring a two way lighting circuit you will need two - two way light switches as well as some three core and earth cable to use as a strapper.

Great one. I've gone bald scratching my head about this. No other videos explain it simply like this. You're a champion.
Cheers, Spud
I'm glad the videos help ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Happy Sunday people!
Sorry for the lack of videos recently, I'm very busy on site for the next 10 weeks or so and have been for the last 4 weeks.
I hope you like this video, it took me considerable time to make all the schematic diagrams (which hopefully make this easy to understand).
I also seem to spend more time blocking trolls than making videos right now!
Please like and share the video as this helps the channel out tremendously ;-)
no worries, we will still be here, yeah the trolls are all over the place everyone gets them, no respect for anyone. got to keep up the day job!
Thanks ;-)
great video ..
easy to understand would like more on domestic electrics..
Thanks Stephen, I'll think about adding some more videos when I get chance ;-)
Simplicity personified. A concise yet detailed explanation. KISS! Keep it simple stupid. That's my mantra. Big up ya, bro! Pity about the trolls. Some people are just nitpickers.
Excellent. Like many others I've been scratching my head about this two way switching, and your explanation along with the practical demo caused the penny to finally drop. Now I'm off to get a couple of 2 way switches and a battery and hammer it home.
Superb package all round, much respect !
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Brilliant video! Thank you... This has been a real head scratcher for me in the past!
This makes it much clearer.
More "technical" videos like this please when time permits!
You are welcome.
I'll try and make some more videos like this when I get chance ;-)
Thanks for this video and clear explanation. It is a perfect, simple and a safe way of converting a one way to a two way switching system without making dangerous joints. I knew about the other method which is ideal for new installations, but this is an excellent alternative for working on old or already existing installation.
Not proper way. Read kyle A above.
I had to leave a comment. I have been trying to find a video that explains this concept in a more palatable comprehensive manner; and this video did it perfectly so well. With the diagrams and illustrations. What i love most is, its simple for a layman to understand. Much appreciated....
Wow, thank you!
Excellent video. I've been trying to work this out for the last 3 days. All sorted now.
I rewired my house years ago and had no problems-except that I couldn't get my head around wiring the two-way circuit for the hall and landing. This vid is excellent - so clearly and precisely demonstrated and easy to understand. Thank you U.H. for posting this .
You are welcome.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Excellent video, thanks for posting this. Needed to understand the wiring for this and you have explained it in an easy and straightforward way. Feel confident to now install this in garage and separate extension. Thanks again!
You are welcome.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Much clearer explanation than other vids on this subject. This allowed me to fit an extra switch without having to cut any wires, exactly what was needed. Many thanks.
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
That was one of the best instructional videos I've seen. Thanks for making it so clear and easy to understand.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Hi mate this is a very good demo on 2 way switching. I was always confused about 2 way control. Thanks
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Brilliant explanation and diagrams, I have watched other videos on this but was still left baffled. You have made it really clear for me now because now I understand what the connections are doing when you flick the switches.. Thanks so much :)
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
Fantastic!! Thanks for making what seemed like black magic so easy to understand! I'm building a camper van and wanted 2way switching for my sons bed area. Thanks again. Mark
You are welcome, good luck with the camper van ;-)
Thanks for the comment
once again, another well explained video. I always hunt down your videos if I have a diy query. thanks.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Excellent video. I drew a diagram from the video and followed the instructions successfully.
My friend who is an electrician saw the diagram and approved. Thank you Ultimate Handyman.

Sometimes the L1 and L2 are at the top of the switch and sometimes at the bottom, depending on the make.
Thanks for the comment
Very clear and concise explanation of two way switching. Have viewed several and thought this was the best. Thanks.

Really helpful video. Good and clear. Much appreciated.
Well done! A great explanation. Now I can get on with my wiring alterations.
Thanks for the comment
great job ,,i have been looking at different video's to hook my light in my stair well and be able to turn it on downstairs so that when i get up stairs i can click an switch upstairs to turn off the light ,,they all seemed to be explained kind of poorly ,,but when i saw yours ,,it made complete sense as to how to do it ,, simply and very quick for me to complete the job ,, i really appreciated your diagrams and how you explained it as you went through each step . thank you so much .
Thanks for the comment
The amount of "bright" mates and family members who have asked me to help with two way switching is unreal, for some reason folks really struggle to understand the principle in theory let alone in real life. You've made a really good explanation and anyone who finds it complicated should frankly not be touching electrics.
Thanks for the comment Paul ;-)
Excellent Video....As usual its made the subject matter clear, concise and im sure beneficial to many young and old...Many Thanks...Jimmy (gas safe registered) engineer Bolton
Thanks for the comment Jimmy ;-)
Thanks Just used this as i couldnt work out how my configuration was layed out in my living room which just had 2 three cor and earths one in each socket. I coudnt realise why they both had a live when i testerd then without the switches. Your diagrams helped me realise the live and neutral splitting was happening in the ceiling not in the switch boxes. Peoples demos dont show this so maybe a good video for the future. Thanks again fron North Yorkshire.
I'm glad the video helped, Kenny. I'm not too far away from you in Lancashire 😉
Thanks for the comment 👍
Thank you i fully understood this circuit and used it in my shed , works well.

I like the schematic diagrams. Very helpful
I'm glad you like them.
Thanks for the comment
Glad to see someone actually using L1 for the feed and com for switchline proving it doesn’t matter what way they go I always terminate this way for a1way switch that way L2 doesn’t become live when in off position
Thanks for the comment, Neil ;-)
Great video, watched a few and this is by far the simplest. Schematic diagram and the penny dropped! thanks
You are welcome

+Ultimate Handyman It helps me a lot, because I've got two switches in the kitchen that I'm working on, and I can't wire it up properly.
One switch turns the light on and off, the other switch only turns the light on/off after the first switch is on.
So power isn't getting to the second switch until I close the first one.
Hopefully I'll get it with this great explanation.
Thanks again :)
Omg ...that was the easiest way one can explain ...I had only knew how to run the light off the second switch not from the switch where live wire is .thanks
You are welcome
Thanks for the comment 👍
This is a really great way of showing how it works
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman been brushing up on some my electrical knowledge at this time to relieve my boredom
Great info, this helped me alot, I've managed to do this with your help.
Very clearly explained. The schematics were helpful. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the great video really helps. I'm interested to see how this would work with three switches.
You are welcome.
I'll try and cover that when I get time.
Thanks for the comment
The joys of intermediate switching! It`s easy enough to figure, intermediate switches have 4 connection terminals, so effectively you cut the pair of strappers, thus leaving 4 ends, which connect across the switch.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Thank you Sir for that great video :)
You are welcome
Thanks for the comment
Great video many thanks to you.
You are welcome!
Fascinating - very educational - excellent presentation skills
Thanks for the comment ;-)
I love u!! finally i get how this works, lol it was so simple..
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Thanks for the video, I've sometimes seen this called the "conversion method" where you're adding and additional switch to an existing lighting circuit. There are of course other ways requiring only two wires between switches. #JohnWard has recently done some in depth technical videos on lighting circuits (UK) that people might find interesting.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Very helpful, Thanks heaps man!!

I've been looking for video information on how to wire a light via 2 way switching, my daughter just moved in a house and the switch at the bottom of the stairs worked independently from the one at the top, I couldn't make head or tail of the wiring, or any of the electrician's videos, after watching your it seemed so simple, I screenshot your diagram and looked at her wiring, dead simple, one of her wires had been put in the wrong switch connector, did it the same as your diagram ...Bingo, can now turn on at top or bottom and turn off at top or bottom..thanks for doing this video
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
Simple when you know how, cheers👍

Thanks for the very easy to understand video, I followed the two-way switch diagram that was included with the switch and ended up with it not working correctly, (when one switch is in the off position it totally disabled that the switch. Following your diagram solve the problem thanks

Thinking of it as logical operations helped. The diagram specified describes a XOR table. Lamp lights when switches in different positions (one up and one down).
The other lighting diagram mentioned in comments (Line to Com, L1 to L1, L2 to L2, Com to Lamp) is the opposite, a NXOR. Lamp lights when switches in same position (both up or down).
Given OCD, probably a different diagram altogether: Line to Com, L1 to L2, L2 to L1, Com to Lamp. Reversing, gives you back a XOR. Lamp lights when switches in different positions (one up and one down). 😁
Hi, handyman. very happy with all your videos, especially the electrical ones ATM, as I'm now studying to be an electrician.
If I am honest: in some cases, my tutor does not explain things the way it should be explained, (very rushed). However, the topic- two way/ three way and intermediate switching are what I'm currently on and it was only when I watched your videos and correspond with your thorough explanation, that was when I understood. on the other hand, I would love it if you could do a video on the easiest way of calculating resistivity in material, as I'm still slightly confused about the method!?Massive thanks to you mate. Kepp up the good work.
Cheers.
regards
Lincoln from Essex`
Hi Lincoln, I'm glad the video's help.
I'm afraid I don't do things like calculating the resistance of material as I'm a maintenance engineer and not an installation electrician.
Best of luck with the course ;-)
Superb video, thanks!

hey thanks for the vid! Does anyone know a way i could maybe use this 2 way switch with a dimmer, to cross fade a bicolor LED panel from 3200 -5600? thanks again
thanks , it was very clear instraction,
You are welcome.

wow!!!! this is the one i'm looking for, every time i search for 3 way 12 volts dc connections, only one comes out and its hard to understand because there is no polarities on it and he use 3 way toggle switch and one regular on off switch, so i cannot follow his instructions, so i search again and try to click the two way switching buy ultimate handy man, oh man this is what im looking for, nice and simple explanations and also the diagram, one more thing you really use a battery for demonstration , awesome, thank you very much for sharing, the only confusing is the tittle for the American residence
I'm really glad that the video helps ;-). Thanks for the comment
