Have to admit to being a bit of a clot. Followed your simple demo, then proceeded to fit the plate upside down with COM at the bottom, meaning off was on and on was off. Anyway, red and black now where they should be and this clot has a correctly working new light switch. Thanks! And this from someone who successfully wired his first plug when he was 10 (a long long time ago) 😂

I'm doing up my apartment before I move full time into my house. I did take a picture of the wiring ages ago but can't find it. I don't know if the wires are wrong at the ceiling rose or the light switch, my bathroom/kitchen & hall work but my living room & bedroom don't. The wires go from my living room to the bedroom. All that is behind the wall switch is 3 reds, one ofcehich goes through the wall into the bedroom. Should that be in the L1 - L2 or the con? I can't tell where the other two are coming from, but I assume the ceiling. I have the other 2 reds in the L2 & nothing in the L1. Could you guide me please?

I went to try this and found that I had 3 red wires! A double com terminal with two red wires going into it. The new switch only has one com terminal - do I put both wires into it or are switches available with two coms terminals? Thanks

@@CEO786 No it doesn’t matter whether you have the red(Permanant Line) or Black(Switching Line), the other way. You could put the black in common and red in l1. however if you have a switch with com, l1 and l2. it will matter if you put one of them in l2 and the switch will be upside down, but then you can just flip it and it will be fine.
@@LurgsHowToGuides It would actually make no difference at all. As if the switch is open (off) the circuit is disconnected and closed (on) the circuit is connected. All the switch does is connect the 2 wires together.
For plastic face plate and plastic box, the earth not needed. If you were to get a metal faceplate, you'll screw the earth to that. If you had a metal backplate, the earth would be screwed to that. if you have metal BOTH plates you need to make sure you have both wired to earth.
There's a switch in my house that doesn't seem to be connected to anything. I keep flipping it on and off, but nothing comes on. Then last week I got a letter from a woman in Germany telling me to stop it.
This is a hell of a lot more difficult than this video makes out! I couldn't get the screws in far enough to hold the wires in place then one of the screws wound up in the wrong hole! to cut a long story short I lost my mind!...............................plus the new switch is broken and in the bin and the old one has been put back.
@@LurgsHowToGuides I got it off pretty easy. The part that stumped me was the screws that were to hold the wires in were really tight! They wouldn't go in far enough to hold in the wires. I tell you something though there's no way I'm paying something like £60 to get an electrician out to just replace a light switch. I'll try again sometime maybe with a better screwdriver

mate you put your meter between line and switch line, this will not give a reading as the meter needs a voltage difference. you should have tested between line and earth, as earth and a voltage reference of 0v.
😂 Bit like my wife a chocked on my tea on that note my dad electrocuted his own hand asked my mum to unplug the washing machine she unplugged the wrong plug and well we came home from school and he was on the sofa Bleeding with a big hole in his wrist years ago that was 😂 poor fella well I say turn that power off urself make sure. He no longer alive he died in 2013

I put one in yesterday there were two red wires going into l1 so I did the same any idea why there are two reds and one com it works fine etc

If you are confident you’ve turned off the mains, do that and check switches and lights to make sure all off. If you are unsure get an electrician in.

It's broken. That's happened to me before. If you are not 100% fully competent then get an electrician to put a new one on.

Sometimes they do fail. You cannot fix the switch, it's just as easy to buy a new face plate switch, even now you can get one for 99p I think.
I second this. My switch rocker bit fell off. £1.09 to get a new one.

It’s best to get a light switch with 2 terminals at the bottom called a 2 way switch

Sounds like you’ve tripped something in your fusebox. Be very very careful it’s 240v. Consult an electrician

When I test with a meter, my voltage goes from 190 down then back up to 190. Does not stay on one figure.

Could be a faulty meter. If you are unsure then don’t swap the switch and get a qualified electrician in. Or turn off power for the whole property
Brand new from screwfix , I had it set to 200v like yours. Should it be set to 600v as we got 240v.

If you are unsure get a qualified electrician. Mine didn't have an Earth connection.
Light Switches doesn't need earth wires.. Unlike plug switch sockets

Sounds like you need an Electrician as this is a fairly easy job. Don't risk it.
