I LOVE your video Simon. I'm an ABC, I speak cantonese and mandarin.. I practice kung fu, did alot of chinese community cultural events my whole life and I was fine with my chinese culture awareness.. until I went to college and met so many foreign students from mainland china.. years onward Ive been criticized by most (not all) mainland chinese students for being this "ignorant ABC" that doesnt know chinese culture because I either dont speak mandarin as well as they do (for example, I dont know science or political words in mandarin), didnt grow up in a china (not having a PRC passport), or attempt to have a rational disucssion about political topics. To prevent myself from writing a thesis of my life story, I just wanted to say Simon, it warms my heart that there are people in china that are critical but still love their country. It is no different than a parent who loves their child but is consistently harsh on them because they want to see the child improve and strive. on a side note, sun zhongshan is one of my favorite chinese historical figures..

My impression of the CCP is that they are strongly adverse to “free thinking” except when the outcome of same is agreement with their views and policies. I’ve heard that internal to the party they may have discussions and debates, but when it comes to public discourse there are lines that can’t be crossed - such as criticism of Xi Jing Ping or advocating for the rights of HK citizens to democratically elect their leaders.

Hi Simon Yu ... I like your presentations ... You made some very good points in your comments over China & Chinese matters !!!
I wrote the following comments on Quora recently ... I would love to leave it here for you & your fans to read too ... hope to get more people to understand WHY there is a SUDDEN Overseas Chinese & a SUDDEN BIG INTERNATIONAL FOLLOWING of Good Wishers & Supporters for China ( and even for the CCP of China ).
I am an Overseas Chinese myself … I was SO SAD & disappointed when I first visited China in the very early ‘80’s.
I saw the desperation of sheer abjectness in those early Chinese days … I was one who had believed … China would need 150 to 250 more years to raise her People and their living standards to Singapore’s living standards of the early ’80s … or may not ever!
PRACTICALLY YES! Hardly anyone could be proud of China, then … I was openly displeased with their uncouth manners & their total lack of even basic social decorum!!!
Corrupted Civil Servants were everywhere … and they announced proudly, loudly & clearly, they wanted to be very rich … Some Years Ago!!
The state of corruption was SO APPALLING & RAMPANT … HELL Would Freeze Over Thrice … before China can ever Rise!!
We could see the immense Chinese Market Potential … BUT with that much parasites, cankers & sores, grafted onto the National Body of China … we couldn’t see even a glimpse of hope! We became more & more disillusioned & myself & many others were deciding to back out … and let the multinationals do their own long arm & deep pocketed things.
Up till 2013, China was truly deplorable … then, Xi JinPing was elected as President of the People's Republic of China on 14th March 2013 … and thus, the Spring Cleaning & Polishing of China began … but the following few short years were China’s most difficult & chagrined moments. By the 13th October, 2017 China has announced that 1,034,000 officials have been punished for corruption ... China’s anti-corruption campaign to "kill tigers and swat flies" - or to go after ... of different party and state departments will be streamlined.
Everyone, including a very large measure of Mainland Chinese, had disbelieved & condemned the Xi JinPing’s Graft Eradication Program as a ploy to flush off his political opponents & lock away or execute the brazen ones.
I, myself was quite sceptical … that President Xi was embarking on a selfless Heavens’ Decreed Journey, mandated by Centuries of Lost Chinese Righteousness. By the 6th Year of Xi JinPing’s unrelenting rout against graft … Everyone was struck with AWE … NOT ONE WHIMPER OF DOUBT STOOD AGAINST THIS CHINESE NATIONAL SWORD.
That was when … ALL HELLS BROKE LOSE IN THE WEST, ESPECIALLY IN THE USA, & ALL HEAVENS BROKE OPEN FOR THE GRATEFUL CHILDREN OF MOTHERLAND CHINA & HER FARFLUNG CHINESE DIASPORA.
That was when … WE ARE GLAD TO BE CHINESE … wherever we are!!
That was when … hundreds of thousands of worldwide people became so enamoured and so believing of China & Chinese Leadership!

If being critical of government is a sign of being anti chinese then someone needs to tell the CCP. They came into power by overthrowing the last government and usually when you overthrow a gov, you are always worried about being overthrown. So anyone against you is Anti this or Anti that. The CCP is also responsible for so much of China’s imperial history being lost by the cultural revolution . Over the years the CPG has had to buy back so many of China’s history from other nations who saved scrolls and other items that the gov considered “banned”. If the Chinese people stood up for their country and its history back then they wouldn’t of had to rely on the rest of the world to save it. Why are these things never considered against China’s interest or bad for China now? My point is, sometimes you just have to stand up for what is right not what the gov always says you have to do. History shows us how wrong they have been time and time again, keeping them in check is our duty.

About friendliness in China, the experience of a beautiful blonde haired girl is obviously going to be different than someone else with a different situation..... You can still love your country and criticize the government. It is ridiculous to expect every Chinese person to love the Qing Dynasty...... does that mean they don't like China? NO. Is it wrong to say you prefer Deng Xiao Ping instead of Mao? No, I don't think so. I think it is just an opinion. So I don't think it is fair for people to equate the government as the same as the country and the people.

If they were really nationalists they would promote what they see as being what’s best for the nation or policies that could be promoted. They don’t do that though they just want to stop the conversation before it begins. The whole idea that a debate could be had and a conclusion reached is anathema to them.

I come from a country - Romania - that was communist for over 40 years and I can tell you that what you are describing is not a cultural or purely Chinese thing.
Before 1989 you could not freely criticize the government. Sure, people did criticize things but it was when you were at home, with your family or very close friends. Going out in public and speaking against the leadership was not only considered anti-Romanian, but it was dangerous. You could be punished for it and lots of people were punished for it. Some paid with their life for it
This is what happens when one party/one leader identifies itself/himself with the country. When THE PARTY = THE COUNTRY, then it's easy to label someone anti-country when all they're doing is to criticize the government.
In our case it was Nicolae Ceaușescu and the PCR (the Romanian Communist Party). I remember there was even a song called "The Party, Ceaușescu, Romania", so you see how they were trying to equate Romania as a country with the party and the leader and you couldn't criticize one without "attacking" the country.
Today it's very different and it is perfectly normal and safe to criticize the government. But it's not something that happened just like that, it took a Revolution to get it.
Anyway, hope you get to read this. Take care and stay safe.

@StrategicFooyoo that 'new culture' in China is greed, money and power. People in China are brainwashed by CCP to the extend that people don't recognize or understand the basic moral values and human dignity.

    我認為反中是不對的。應該是反中共才對!人與人之間本就不該互相仇視⋯⋯我們反對的是中國共產黨的體制才是!

Fascinating. You're very intelligent and very charming. If only young Americans and young people in western countries were as well informed and thoughtful as you. *"Constructive criticism" is the term you maybe seeking. The CCP has one strength: it can quarantine large areas to prevent the virus from spreading.*

Simon, I just LOVE your videos! You have so much common sense and you are so correct in this video. I find, in reading comments on many videos dealing with China, the Chinese people are far more sensitive than other people. I am American and I find it kind of crazy. You really get it and I find that very refreshing! THANK YOU😃❤

The problem is that the intolerant will not listen to reason they will abuse you to gain or keep power. When they start to abuse someone we have to be intolerant back to the abusers or freedom perishes.

If this helps there are some key difference between patriotism and nationalism. Both are about love of the land, history, people and protecting it from those who want to destroy but patriotism also incorporates criticism to improve oneself while Nationalism (or jingoism if you prefer) is about subservience to the state, you don't get to have an opinion unless it's the same opinion as the state, anything critical will result in you being seen as the enemy.

I dont know why some people are calling you anti-China. I respect what you say-it's your country, you certainly know more than anyone from the outside. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you. And yes, I say much, MUCH harsher things about my own country and have for many years.
