Winston had a link to your page so here I am; convenience, freedom and the missing word is Liberty. Liberty to say is missing not freedom. Even Liberty has limits for example in the United States we have Liberty "freedom of speech" and you can say almost anything that is true or not true. We do not have freedom of consequence. I can say to a bully you have a big mouth and then get punched in my my mouth by the bully. I cannot yell fire in a movie theater and cause panic and loss of life and even if there is no loss of life I will still be arrested. In every place this is more or less Liberty when you cannot leave a place you do not have freedom to go where you want, when you have to do everything yourself you don't have convenience and Liberty to speak always comes with a cost. I have traveled outside the United States many time and never ask what was I doing in the place I visited until my first trip to China when I spent 40 day there. The man in Detroit Michigan was quite rude to me when I returned home. He wanted to know why I was there so long so I told him I was visiting my family with my wife, oh yea then where is your wife in the next line over and said why are you together and I side the sign said one at a time so we got in separate lines, he then realized how stupid his questions were and stamped my papers. I have Liberty to a greater degree it is not limitless.

Hi Simon, another new subscriber whom SerpentZA sent here!
I lived in Shanghai for just one year and what you’re saying started to sink in after a while. Two examples:
I found it very easy to chat about politics with mainlanders - just not about Chinese politics.
After several months in the country, I wanted to at least visit its western half briefly. While I wasn’t stopped en route, I did basically get deported from one city in Xinjiang due to an ongoing “major security operation”. No foreigners allowed... and of course, I didn’t feel like asking what that operation was. China seemed even less free after that.

I've lived in mainland China for five years and I'm beginning to feel quite claustrophobic here now. I live in a less developed city and the amount of government propaganda plastered all over the place is incredible. On the street, in malls; you can't move for it. Plus having to connect a VPN every time you go online (most of the time it won't connect) reinforces just how much control the government has over people's lives. I'm now starting to see more police cars (with facial recognition cameras) and unmarked military jeeps on the streets. China's dystopian future has already arrived. If I can land a job outside mainland China then I'll leave. I don't think living in this political climate is good for people's mental health.

The illegitimate communist regime is indeed a terror regime. That's what Utopianism does everywhere it exists. The higher ups never buy into the Utopianism but weaponize it, and cynically use those who do to acquire and maintain absolute power. The rank and file who buy into it become the cruel task masters who believe an impossibility: that one person's notion of perfection could ever be anyone else's (everyone has a different and unique idea). Hopefully soon the regime will fall.

I used to feel free, but China is becoming an increasingly difficult place to be a foreigner. Censorship has reached such levels that I can't even keep up with news from back home anymore. I rely entirely on VPN now to access the free world, and that's precarious, since the government could block VPNs anytime they choose. I don't like surrendering so much control; I want to be able to get information when and where I want. The only foreigners who 'feel free' are surface-level laowais who live in laowai bubbles and don't bother to keep an eye on what's happening in wider China, or the high-level laowais who are making good money and who leave often enough that internet blocks don't really influence them, plus their companies probably have VPNs in the office. People in the middle are finding it harder and harder to enjoy life here.

Minor correction: foreigner's need permit to enter Tibet, but no permit is required for entering Xinjiang.
Though I believe criticizing government in general is alright in China, especially local governments, I think we all have seen examples where there were really negative feedbacks about certain local government online, and there were consequences for those local officials. I also sort of understand why they tend to delete online posts that directly go against central government or attack key officials of the country, because the structure of the governance in China requires to maintain a high level of authority for the top governing bodies.
One thing I'd like to mention is that if you like outdoor activities, your freedom is really limited in most inland cities, the air pollution is just bad, unless you really don't care about your health. A lot of people have rhinitis and pharyngitis. The situation did improve quite a bit in the past few years in the city I live (it used to be weeks of continuous heavy air pollution in the winter, truly depressing experience), but still unhealthy a lot of the times. I have air purifiers on 24x7 at home, but when I have to take my children outside I hesitate a lot of the times because of the air quality.
What triggers me politically, is a cult of personality building around certain current leader, like we haven't had enough of this in the past. Like all online news media have to pin a news article about him at the top (really? someone wants attention that bad?), like those changes in constitution that you mentioned in your video. The trend is pretty alarming I would say. By 2023 if things had gone south I would want to move to another country.

You made me notice that most of foreigners that don’t understand Chinese have no idea what is happening on Chinese media.
I did not notice about that and it really gave me a hint why the world often obviously misunderstands China.
I am a foreigner and don’t speak any single piece of Chinese but I am from Japan.
I can barely read signs in modern China because we borrow characters from China and you are borrowing big modern vocabulary from japan.
For Japanese people it is not so difficult to find out propaganda which cannot be seen in free countries are in every corner of Chinese city and media.
Fortunately, I am able to read to some extent ,classic Chinese sentences over 1400 - 3000 year ago that average modern Chinese people were not be able to read anymore because Japanese high school ( better ones) teach students to read 漢文 or 唐詩 or whatever.
Whenever I communicate with Chinese people, I write down my bad classic Chinese sentences .
For Japanese who are also foreigner, Chinese are a completely different language that average people do not understand at all with ears but it is understandable to some degree.
The Chinese Communist party make propagandas to sound like old proverbs and put social ethic feelings that people should follow in them like 故事成語, where people can be happy thanks to great supreme leader and if they are not , they don’t make as much efforts as social model like person, which read really creepy and like covering up over the oppression.
Thank to this video, I noticed that no other foreigners who don’t understand the character s were able to catch those unfree feelings in China and that makes them misunderstand and overvalue China in badly positive way.

Ni Hao. I followed over from Serpenza's channel where he recommended you. It's interesting to hear your perspective. I think any country can seem more free to foreigners, who maybe don't know the ins and outs of the way the countries government work. Some forms of control can be subtle. And even in the west, we get media redirected and not delivered on some of our social media platforms. You are not alone in that. I suppose where the difference comes in, is in the consequences, which I would say are far more severe in china. Though no country is above evil when it suits them, even the USA, or the UK where I live.
Before I found Serpenza's channel, All I had was our media's representation of China, which wasn't favourable, or entirely truthful. Serpenza's channel was a window inside, and showed a more complex picture, with many good people, just trying to get on in their life, like in many other parts of the world. Sure, there are small differences, but there is also many things we have in common, and that is where we should all start.
Thank you for sharing your experience, and I look forward to watching more of your videos. Xie Xie.

I really don't understand China haters, always giving the reason, "You can't say anything bad about China or you can't criticize the CPC". If the CPC has treated the people well, why is there a need to criticize them? They've alleviated 800 millions people from poverty. They even give free housing to the extreme poor people. Do you criticize them. Are you aware that 95.5% of the people supported the CPC? Of course Simon Yu is not one of the 95.5%. I feel sorry for him. Why don't he moved to Taiwan since his wife is from Taiwan. Or why don't he migrate to US or Europe? I don't know why he doesn't like his own country and govt. If he lives in my country, he will be treated as second class citizens. Many oversea Chinese like myself support China and its govt. China is my grandparent's motherland. We were taught to respect our parent, our grand parent. Singapore is a democratic country, right? Do you think you can criticize Singapore govt? Try it in public when you go there. Even in my country, we can't criticize our govt openly or risk being charged and go to jail. Moreover, my country practice racism and treated the Chinese as second class citizens. Do you think US has freedom? US has faked freedom. Why does US sanction countries and people who go against her? When Germany wanted to buy gas from Russia, US wanted to sanction Russia. No country and humans are perfect. China is not perfect, but she takes care of her citizens, unlike US who take cares of the 1% super rich people and the military complex. US does not take care of the poor. That's why there are so many homeless people. And US invade and bomb countries. She should be know as United Satan of America for the wars and killing. Follow Cyrus Janssen UA-cam. He is an American who lives in Canada now. He can criticize China, right? Since he lives in Canada and not in China. He is fair in his comments on China if you don't trust foreign UA-camrs living in China.

Cyrus Janssen's business is to help people from Canada set up accounts in China. Of course he is not going to be in any way critical of China. 最好細分一下,例如明確區分 時間自由、言論自由、XX自由 等等。光使用「自由」這個詞彙太過於籠統了。

"Paying a low charge" for the service - the charge only _seems_ low because you come in with assets and earn an income that essentially puts you in the equivalent of the upper class.
