I would agree Brian - that's why Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
along with the abilities to Access Information and Analyzing that Information
are so important... Great and other FireWalls, Censorship, Prior Restraint and other "Blocks" are all developed to prevent the individual as well as the group from accessing and/or acquiring necessary facts to formulate unbiased opinions.

Why do mainlanders always think we in the west hate China? That surprised me most when I was seeing the comments from China. We in the west have been pretty ignorant of China for the most part, for a lot of us it wasn’t that important, so when I saw people from China who told me I hate China, I was surprised because I have never had any bad feelings toward China up until that point, they were just another country. But honestly those people made me see China differently and I’m more cautious with them than ever, because they lack empathy. That’s the biggest difference I’ve seen, chinese people from the mainland lack empathy for what they don’t understand. That sounds like a sweeping generalization, and in a sense it is, but I would say only 1 out of 10 that I speak to actually understand how to think for others in situations they don’t understand or don’t agree with. And I’ve made it a point to talk to many Chinese people because I wanted to understand why the HK situation makes them so mad and they can’t find any empathy for their plight even though they don’t like the way protesters are behaving. It’s just “black hands of the west, propaganda, brainwashed, idiots, terrorists, traitors etc.” only a few people could think outside the box and not get too emotional about the situation.

not the normal wester people, but the western media hates China, because China has our own value and our own rule how a country should be managed. we are not a slave of so called western ideology. China does 99 good things and 1 bad thing, then western media only report that bad thing. international survey company always showing more than 86% of Chinese people support our government, and CCP did brings prosperity to China, but in western media, China is always a country close to collapse next day, full of greedy officials, no good people in street, making only fake products etc.. thats why Chinese people says, after I read western media, I never realized I love my country and my government so much! Unlike wumao, Nathan Rich does not buy into ideology as most of us (probably including you) are inclined to. He is an admirable commentator on the Internet, who uses logic, observes things objectively, cares for integrity of the reports, free from bias arising from personal and inevitably incomplete experiences, and tried hard to avoid prejudice. Although speaking intensely, he has been refraining from name-calling ("wumao" is an example) and has never applied foul language in his remarks. His impartiality is best evidenced in his comments on the ongoing Hong Kong's issue. Never did he oppose the the protesters if peaceful pursuit of democracy were their goal. Nor did he necessarily criticize the misguided mass movement against the extradition laws, He only spoke up and pointed out the misleading and unbalanced news reports by the (in)famous mass media including those established TV or newspapers inside or outside of Hong Kong. His position is straightforward: Pro-CCP or Pro-democracy or not, journalistic professionals should always try their best to report WHAT HAPPENED, not what they like.

If you are not taught to think critically and questions what you are being told, it can be easy to blindly follow those in power. However, if enough people think this way and are willing to threaten military force, won't we be allowing history to repeat itself with situations similar to Germany in both world wars? The situation in China and the way it teaches its people is not something that should be ignored. The people of China deserve the access to more truthful and varied sources of information.

With the giving back of HK can completely get where you're coming from (btw find your videos thoroughly fascinating this being no exception and hope you're doing ok?) by comparison to history here in UK like when its a bit complex so I apologise if this is a bit of a scattered waffled post lol
Rather when you said you got angry rather is still some bitterness in Scotland (most of my ancestry being from there one of which being from Clan Bruce, or House of Bruce as its still often referred to as) about the Highland Clearances why essentially Nova Scotia (Latin for New Scotland) in Canada exists but as I said is a rather complicated thing, some say was a necessary thing from the 1750s until the 1860s at varing points over 110 years, is essentially why the Highlands are mostly deserted now even some came back though.
Didnt help with the potato famine that raviged potato crops during the latter parts of it either, made worse in Ireland due to the gov't treatment of them what probably lead partly at least onto the Easter Rising of 1916 why its Northern Ireland thats part of the UK now, the Unionists who are essentially all former Ullster scots or descendants from them, Ullster Ireland as its called now with the exception of 2 parts of Ullster which arent part of the UK like Donegal being one of them

My rule for creating a harmonious society is only post positive remarks, unless there is an error of fault that can be supported by demonstrable evidence or honest personal experience. So, this is a great video, especially since it has a happy ending with a rescued kitten, which is classic UA-cam material.

You upgraded the quality for this one! It's funny how your videos are not polluted by 50 cents army. My theory is because you are "an average Chinese guy" who clearly loves his country and even when you criticize it's in a positive way. Happy to see you are also a cat person. The end of the video reminded me of Jun's kitchen! I wish you the 3 millions subscribers he has! Just a question : you seem to be order than I thought (from your memories). Are you around 30?🤔

Thank you so much for this video. I had heard this term mentioned on China Uncensored but never knew where it came from. Not that only China do it to be fair, I think every country does to a point with some of the better known ones being Israel and Russia. Crazy to hear how many do it for free though. Meanwhile in America most young people trash their own country as much as they can online.

In so many conversations with my Chinese wife whenever she relates discussions that she has had with other Chinese, I find myself routinely asking her: 'well, did you ask why?' She simply accepts what others tell her without any followups, challenges, or even to ask for clarifications. Honestly I don't know how she can be in a conversation without seemingly participating in on such basic level. This video in part explains her behavior. But I sense that if one asks most Chinese why they don't ask why in conversations, they are likely to say that it's not polite.

I really pity Hongkong. It’s really a big mistake done by the British for returning hongkong to mainland China, bet the hongkongers envy singapore for getting the independence. Hongkongers should have been given the chance to choose.
The hongkong older generation failed to fight to give future to the younger generation, and now the younger generation has to pay for the price.

It's not as if Britain really had much of a choice, what with the whole decolonialism thing and all. What should we have done, sent in the navy to bombard Shenzhen on the day of the handover? The forces would have followed those orders to the letter, but the political aftermath would be devastating.
No. We have to fight the myopic ideology, not just try to murder people until they agree with us.

We have a similar background so I hold opinions alike yours. When I was in college I once argued that China's going to surpass the US one day . I was considering the problem mathematically: see our GDP's growing faster than theirs, so the one days should come. Looking back, I wouldn't say it's totally wrong, but it didn't make a lot of sense to say "there will be one day that China will be better than the US". When is that day? Better than the US in what? Is GDP the only thing matter? Usually the problems of countries are much more complex than the a science subject and most things can't be answered by only right or wrong. Chinese education is mostly exam oriented and in a standardized test, there's usually a correct answer, this is so in some subject in Arts like history and Chinese language. So the students are told to remember the "correct answer" and are not given much opportunities to express their opinions or to form their opinions. Habitually, we tend to do the same even when we are out of colleges and when we are discussing politics with people.

Look, I'm a person who is born in a nation that has freedom and democracy, and I'm proud of it. But please hear me out.
If person A and person B are arguing over an issue, and person A pulled out the whataboutism card, it is clear that person A is stubborn and refuses to admit that he is wrong. However, person A does point out person B's hypocrisy, which means that person B is telling person A off because person A had done something bad, even though person B himself had done the same thing in the past but he didn't say anything about it before criticizing person A. Therefore, person B should admit to person A that he regretted about doing the same bad thing in his past first before telling him off.
This is not about loving your own nation and hating other nation that is different than yours, or being indoctrinated by your government ever since you are young. Whataboutism isn't a commie tactic. It is our human instinct to point out our opponent's hypocrisy when we argue with them. Before you wanna criticize someone's country for whatever bad things their government had done, at least look back at your own country's past and see whether your government had done any bad things too.

  • @rei_cirith

Really nice to hear from someone who can speak rationally for both sides. I really hope the nationalists will see things like you one day. We don't hate China. We hate the injustice, the brutality, and worst of all, the apathy of the "ends justify means" model the government is taking. Chinese people can be great if only we stop doing things by taking advantage of others, playing victim and making everyone else out to be their enemy. I know it's hard to care about doing anything but the status quo when the competition is so high that people are all struggling to keep up, but come on, we are better than this.
