One curious thing about the Chinese UA-cam pirates cited. They all have professional quality video, lighting, makeup, content and set design, none of which is common in the real UA-cam environment. That combination of professional production qualities suggests big money subsidies and support We know who provides that support (and ease of access) as that ensures conformity with the Communist Party line and approved propaganda. But can you tell us? My guess is that you would rather not.

VPN basically gives you a unique temporary new ip adress based to where you want to connect since every country has their own ip configuration. Hence your device will connect your brower servers into that country's server where you are connected. And im 95% sure that your information is encrypted and are in safe hands. But always remember that your wifi/server provider has an access to your data at all times but our privacy rights are above that in most cases, the worst thing that can happen is to get watched by the government. However, dark web do exist which transcends all government eyes into your data. BUT, you are not safe either.

There are many VPN providers. If you want VPN, you will get it. Of course, many are paid VPNs, so it's about 16 to 24 RMB per month. (I've heard of free VPNs before though).
As he said, many people actually need VPN because their job requires it. The possibility of "getting caught" is actually very low. So many people use VPN. If the police will put every person in jail, that'll be half of China's population.
As long as nobody's badmouthing the Chinese government (and they have proof that they said something wrong), there won't be any problems.
