    Hi Martin, Thank you so much for this video. I previously asked you for a video covering this repair, and there it is. Owners need to know when their mower brake hasn't been acting properly to follow your steps to fix the problem. I didn't follow your advice and nearly crashed into my closed garage door. While doing my brake repair, I discovered something important. The small, thin, curved metal part on the back side of the brake housing presses on the two pins and can rust out and must be replaced. My repair shop told me I would need to buy the whole caliper assembly as that piece was not sold separately. Thanks again for producing this video and reading your video comments.

      Glad to help! I see a lot of mowers coming in every year like this and give an estimate on repair and it is declined. I will still make the quick adjustment to get them working if they turn down the full brake service but occasionally it does not work (especially if the pads are worn out). I can definitely imagine running into a garage door. I was selling a mower one time and a lady test driving it ran into her car and flipped it over after letting off the brake and trying to jump off right before the crash. It was a crazy thing to see. Seemed to be almost no damage to the car bumper. Even stranger we flipped it right back over and fired it up (just a little initial smoke) and she drove off to head towards her house. Her son driving the car behind her (only a mile away they said). I have never seen this piece rusted, that is kind of crazy with how thick it is (this design anyway) but I am sure it happens occasionally on some designs. Thank you for watching!

      I appreciate that! Definitely would help with the pins but I like to feel dangerous sometimes ha! The rims on this style have flat spots and the shaft is flat at the end so they do not have a keyway. Many of them with this same style would so thank you for mentioning it!

    I found the easiest way to clean the brake Pistons is to Chuck them in a small hand drill and take a small piece of sandpaper and do half at a time. Works play a mini lathe.

    Tip: Mix up a mixture consisting of 50% acetone and 50% automatic transmission fluid...spray it on cruddy rusty parts like the ones you cleaned up...wait a few minutes, then clean it up- it'll make those parts like new, and with very little effort. Makes THE best penetrating oil too. Good video- I've never messed with the brakes on a riding mower, and had NO idea!

    • @IndRepair
      @IndRepair  11 днів тому +1

      I have never heard this at all. I will likely not be doing it as I can not stand the smell of acetone but this is a great tip for everyone! Thank you for sharing and for your comments!

    • @bobbylibertini
      @bobbylibertini 11 днів тому +1

      @@IndRepair I don't think you'd notice the smell of the acetone once it's mixed with the ATF, if you could have someone else mix it. You wouldn't believe how well it works- I was doing rear drum brakes on a crusty old vehilce once, and the hardware looked like it had been at the bottom of the ocean. I live far from town and it was getting late and wanted to finish the job, so I used the magic mixture (first time)...and WoW! The parts which I thought were unsalvageable are still on that truck today.

    • @IndRepair
      @IndRepair  10 днів тому +1

      @@bobbylibertini This is a great idea for mixing it up I suppose the oil in the ATF probably keeps the smell down almost completely. I will give it a shot in the near future. Thank you for the tip!

    Martin, is there any specific reason you've avoided becoming a dealer of branded equipment?

    • @IndRepair
      @IndRepair  11 днів тому +3

      I get asked that all the time. We have been approached by probably 60 equipment companies wanting us to sell stuff but to me it is never worth the margin and hassle of dealing with it. We have limited space for showing items and would have to divert mechanics to help with someone asking questions or hire more people to help out. I know one of the large dealers in town and have spoken to him several times so I hear about many of the nightmares that go hand in hand with this type of thing. Many come with stocking, contract terms and many rules that I do not want to deal with. I really enjoy the freedom we have to do things we like and really are able to take care of customers well in every way. There are a lot of downsides to handling retail sales in my opinion. I have chosen not to even entertain most of these companies for the last few years but just recently Stihl came in so I listened and got the info. Just another one that I am not planning on doing after getting all the details

      @@philliphall5198 Freedom really is great and I just can't see being beholden to anyone for any reason. No matter how much I would love to sell Stihl chainsaws, trimmers and push mowers it doesn't seem to be worth it. I really had a hard time saying no to Stihl recently though and kind of left it open for the future

    It amazes me how long this brake system has been in service and how many brands almost exactly the same. By the way, who are you? Lol … on a serious note. I do have one quibble about your service today. I know Taryl says it’s not rocket science and he’s right, and it’s not a vehicle on the highway doing 70 mile an hour, but… You knew there was a but, right? On a vehicle disk brakes are designed to be able to slide and adjust automatically on the caliper to the wear. On garden tractors the opposite is true being that the caliper is fixed, but the disk is on a spline designed to be able to slide automatically adjusting. If it’s frozen, the pressure to the inside pad can no longer be applied correctly creating a squeeze between the pads, nor can it release correctly. So my quibble if you haven’t figured it out already is that you failed to clean and lubricate the spline on the tractor and disk, at least on camera.

    • @IndRepair
      @IndRepair  11 днів тому +4

      Lol, I am just a guy with some tools who repairs stuff, definitely not an astronaut like Taryl! If we were going to the moon on my repairs there would be no chance of making it! You are definitely right about the spline moving freely for best operation. I do not ever see them frozen unless they are sitting for a very long period of time. Even if they are frozen up against the back pad, the torque and rotation of the disc moving will force the disc outward and free it up (every one I have seen anyway). I did lubricate the spline with anti seize before re-installing (and put this recommendation in the video) but I did fail to mention cleaning the inside of the disc and the spline to the viewers. Thank you for pointing this out! By the way, who are you? Lmao

    • @philliphall5198
      @philliphall5198 11 днів тому +2

      If you bead blast the disc it’s going to move freely every time for sure 👍, just the way I do it 😮
