Its definitely real compared to the belt drive stamped steel crap most people call a mower, but its not the kubota b5200 I have, talk about a seriously overbuilt 13hp lawn mower. we call it the massive mower or the tiny tractor depending on what we are doing with it at the moment.
@@gregdawson1909 b5200 is a super light tractor aka compact they call them these days, it's competitor was the cub cadet low bow and the deere 700 series like the 755. kubota is just built wrong. designed to fail. they cheaped out on very important parts necessary for every day use and aren't designed to handle rough service use. not saying deeres aren't built wrong either, deere likes to over complicate things. i'm sure it's a patent issue between all the manufacturers. i can mow fields with a 922 and it's only a 25hp older than i am. should i compare it to the 5200? sure lets. how well does your 5200 handle the 11' 3 point flail mower? i'm sure you get it now. apples to apples, rust to rust. why? because i can push a 430 out of a muddy ditch all by myself, can't do that with the heavier machines
Back in the late 90s I used to mow a neighbor's lawn when they were out of town. They had one of these... Thing was a beast! LOVED the little red button on the floor. Locks the diff and you can actually kick the rear end out haha. such a great machine.
The 430 is still a beast of a garden tractor. There's alot of those and the 455's that have over 2000 hours on them with nothing but general maintenance. My 758 still has that same 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel. Excellent machines.
I'm mostly an orange tractor guy, but I have to say that overall that is a damn fine specimen of a 430 and I am a little envious! Also for the love of god please don't refer to that exquisite garden tractor as a lawn mower!! Zero turns and Snappers are lawn mowers, that is a diesel garden tractor from the glory days of garden tractors! They sure as hell don't make them like that anymore! 😊
A neighbor had a late 70's or early 80's Kubota lawn tractor with 3 cylinder diesel that I fixed a bunch of times for them. It was great to work on and that old mower never slowed down even under super heavy loads! Engine sounded identical to this one.
Back in the 90's and into 2000's for 13 years I mowed 6 acres and plowed my drive with my 430. BTW when Deere came out with the 755, 855 and 955 compact tractors they used the 430 hood. Also, the JD hyd. blade had about an inch of down pressure, rare on a garden tractor but handy. Liked your vid!🦾
I bought one of those 4 years ago and took it down to the frame. Had everything but the hood powder coated including the wheels. It took a year but I got it 100% complete all hydraulics, 3 point and rear pto. I used those tractors in high school new in the 80s at an amusement park. I must have cut thousands of acres. I bought the one I restored hoping to find a tiller and front end loader. I spent a year looking at piles of rust and even bought plans to build a loader to factory specs. $5k later and not being able to find a tiller I sold it at a loss. It was a good idea that just didn't pan out. The parts are like buying gold! I bought a new 25 hp 4x4 tractor with everything I wanted and actually use it unafraid to get it dirty! lol
Owned a JD455D for a while. Put 850 hours onit mowing and plowing driveway. Total repairs consisted of one spindle, a PTO switch and a new battery. Most solid 'garden tractor' Ive known.
I have one with 1660 hrs, it's 24 yo and is an outstanding machine. Its mowed, pulled aerators, dethatchers etc . I currently have a couple of larger tractors so I don't use it as much but it never fails when I need it.
I worked at a golf course as Assistant grounds keeper for a few years as a young man and my favorite job was mowing the roughs that looked like your yard on the 430. I’d throttle it up about 3/4 and pull the yellow switch and rip through shit at about half speed. It was about 5 golf balls an hour through the machine and that would wake you up. Once I even put one through the neighbors window. I liked the deer better than the big Toro groundsmaster fairway mower. It was so fun to run, I will never forget it. That was about 30 years ago.
I had a 92 420 I used winter and summer for 24 years mowing 4 acres and pushing snow. I replaced it in 2016 with a 1025R. The 420 &430 were a great tractor
I've picked up a 1978 John Deere 316K in November and did the same thing your doing to it but mine was $400 a non runner when I brought it home and needed gas tank, steering wheel new hoses and new rear tires. But it's a reliable and is my mowing machine.
Just got a well used x495 myself, a few things here and there and I got it running, mine gad a busted left tail as well.... It is a pleasure to drive, as its a beast compared to my 600 hr d160, albeit even the latter was just was treated to a k66 trans upgrade and a 325 front axle with custom front kingpin/pindles allowing for 5x4.5 wheels rims up front to match the rear.....
My brother bought and restored a 1984 430 several years ago, rebuilt the Yanmar engine, replaced the fuel pump, new paint. Looks nice. As I recall, these 430s with a 60" deck sold new for almost $10,000 which is a crazy amount of money.
I got the 425 and it came with the 3pt and PTO coupler. These things are stout! Though I'm envious of the torque of the diesel for getting implements started spinning but I won't complain too much since I went out of my way to get the most compact of the real (horizontal engine) tractors.
I bought a brand new one in 1989, but mine is the 420 (Onan 20hp gasser). Still mowing our 4 acre`s to this very day. Only major thing i`ve had to do is replace the crank seals due to the front one was leaking on the PTO clutch for the mower, a new muffler, a new JD420 seat, and a throttle cable. Other than that, my 420 has been the best little tractor i`ve ever owned to date. The 60 inch deck is starting to get rough now, and you can`t buy them anymore. I also bought a brand new Kubota BX23s back in 2017, they`re a great tractor too. Parts are getting hard to find these days for thee ole JD420, so if an when it dies, the Kubota will take over the job full time. I use the BX for things that the 420 can never do. (backhoe & frontend loader work). Anyways, good to see the JD430 here in your video, they are great little tractors! Good on ya for fixin`er up!!! Looks good!
Best tractor ever, 3cylinder yanmar best diesel never missed a beat, sorry we had to sell it blew a hole in the axle. We also had broom on it worked great really mis that.
A good one like that goes for pretty big bucks up here in Minnesota. That's actually not a bad deck. Next time you have it off go over the surface rust with a wire brush on a grinder and then treat it with rust converter. Then paint ir with the special Rustoleum no rust primer. That stuff works real well. Great idea on the corrugated plastic. Again, those hoods are EXPENSIVE, so try to do what you can to sae it. If you ever want to paint it PAINT RIGHT OVER THE DECALS, then put the new ones right over the top. It really helps to locate where to put the new decals, and no one will ever see that you put them on top of the old ones. Good luck!
At 10 years old I was driving a 755 JD which is pretty the same model just bigger. We had a small bush hog on it, they’re mainly used for golf courses. Spent many many hours on it, as soon as your fired it up it bought me right back!
Just watched your video, good job on the refurbishment. I did the same with my LA145 someone abandoned. A word of advice, if you want to bring the paint back to life, get some Mothers mag and aluminum polish. A foam ball in the cordless drill plus the polish will make the paint look like new again. It's a very gentle compound that does not hurt the paint at all. I used it on mine, it has the plastic hood molded in jd green, but it was so oxidized that it looked like a chalkboard. The Mother's polish resored it to a high gloss. Your painted hood might need to be wet sanded and buffed out, or wet sanded and clear coated to give it the shine you're looking for.
Great job on the grill and hood, I copped out and spent the money on a new grill when I rebuilt my 1992 430, it will last you along time if you keep good care of it. Just a helpful hint, when changing the Hyd. oil pull the top hose off the site glass and it will fill way faster, other than that just keep up with the regular maintenance and enjoy! They definitely are grass eating beasts.
What a beast, mine 3500+ hours on it, versa turf liquid filled rear tires, 5 bar fronts, 3 point with a front weight bracket. Will pretty much go and mow any where.
NICE!! That's Awesome. I have 2 JD heavy duty garden tractors and a Gator and I love them all, such great machines! Nice job with the 430 there, you'll be very happy with it.
We had a 430 growing up at the shop. It was a great machine, but was traded on a bigger Deere. I collect old Cub Cadets now, and have a 1782 diesel. Either the 430 Deere or the 1782 Cub puts newer machines to shame. They are both mini farm tractors.
You aren't old enough to remember the "Gas" shortages and odd and even plate numbers on vehicles being able to fill up only if your plate matched. This was in Virginia. This was also under Jimmy Carter's administration. In the wake of the 1973 Oil Crisis, gas stations across the country enacted different rationing policies and standby rationing plans were introduced. I have a friend who cut lawns during that period and he couldn't buy any gas for his push mower to cut lawns, so to get around that restriction *he converted his gas push mower to run diesel.* Diesel was not restricted and he had all the lawn business he wanted as a kid. He still does mechanical work on anything today. My Uncle, during the same period, had a hand crank pump that allowed our family to syphon off all the gas the allowed cars of the day (odd or even plate numbers) could get fueled. He would transfer the gas to a 55-gallon drum and when we couldn't get gas and needed it, the drum was usually full so we filled up or got what we needed from the 55-gallon drum until we could fill up at the station again. After the vehicles were syphoned off we would go back if we had time and sit in line and fill up for the second time that day. The stations, of course, ran out at the pumps often when you went in early or for the second time. Gas was a gamble, but diesel was easy.
We mow a large acreage. Basically 3 different farmsteads and a bit of the field access roads. I got a 445 with a Kawasaki motor, big mistake! thing didn't last a week before it couldn't keep oil in it. At the time the parts for rebuilding it were more than the value of the tractor, as Deere had the parts supply all tied up. I've collected different L&G trctors over the years, cub cadet , Sears Suburban, etc. The 445 was a good size for what I needed, but spending 3 K for a repair was out. I finally bit the bullet and bought a late Deere 495 Diesel, not cheap, but we love it! Later found a 445 (455?) Diesel version and it is a real horse, son grabbed it for his use! I need to find either a rebuild for the blown engine one or a diesel motor for it. The thing has all the extras on it, just need to get it running again!
Yep the 400 series garden tractors are a beast when it comes to mowing I got a 420 that I re-powered with a Honda engine she’s a pretty nice tractor Would love to have a 430 just never see them for sale
I worked for a local School district for 35 years. We had four of these. One had the hand lever and the other three had foot pedals. The guys drove them as if they were a hydro around shrubs and other obstacles. Problem was when they did that, they were slipping the clutch to go slow and the next thing you know the clutch would be glazed over and you would have to pull it and sand the surface to remove that glaze. I told them to shift to a slower gear and lock the pedal down, but they never listened. One other issue I had with them was replacement parts were ridiculous in price.
Awesome find and good work dressing it up some. If I remember correctly, these are basically a 655, so that may help with some hard to find used parts.
i had 1 of them great machine ! may wanna consider haven it sandblasted an then powder coated did mine an dont have to clean underneath grass doesnt stick
Great job ! I’d try to find a matching front tire, right front sitting on tractor is different. Guess I’m too OCD lol ! Enjoy ! Once you go diesel you’ll never go back to gas ⛽️ 🇺🇸
I've had one of these for about 16 years. Other than minor leaks and items, I've not had to perform any repairs on it, just the usual maintenance items. I have almost every attachment made for it - mower, snowplow, snowblower, front 540rpm PTO, 3pt linkage, moldboard plow, tiller, cab, two sets of rims with ag and turf tires, front-end loader, and a Tilt-Dump vacuum. I think about the only attachment I don't have is the center plow. Everything works as expected. I turbocharged it just for grins but did not turn up the fuel so it's really just a bit of a gimmick - it probably has a bit stronger torque but not any additional power.
I bought five or six years ago an old 1988 Kubota g5200 14hp diesel mower. Has 4200hrs on it. Only reason I bought it was a bunch of hours is because it was my neighbors and I knew it was maintained correctly. I just keep it at the camp house. Runs like a top, but burns fuel like crazy.
Worked for JD at the Davenport plant for a while and became very familiar with the x475 and it's insane pulling power. We'd use those to pull the ADTs down the assembly line from station to station and pop wheelies
Best lawn mower, garden tractor, bulldozer, beast ever made! Nothing like diesel power for grass cutting, you can cut jude above idle! Diesel torque will throw snow over the moon!
a good job done on a worth while machine just a thought might be worth painting the under neath deck with red oxide or somthing just prevent more rust used to do it to mine for a bit of protection
I hear you on those old 430s! They are beautiful looking tractors. I would love to find one. the only thing I would do is figure out how to make it foot pedal instead of handle drive.
My neighbor has the x9something series. It's a beast when it's working, but he is rough as hell (a lawn service pro). I can't for certain I want one because I'm a mechanic and knowing the cost of parts for it and how often they are dealer only items making them really seemingly intentionally making repairs expensive makes me hesitant to buy one. Besides for my needs my neighbor will break his again eventually and I'll take it for a test drive when something I need it for comes up. My personal favorite is the badboy elite series zero turns with the Kawasaki engine. After modifications to the blade speeds (turning them up a bit by changing pulley sizes and replacing the belt to fit), installing the adjustable handles , and rigging an air ride under the seat it becomes a beast that is impossible to match anywhere near its price class. (And no I don't work for or partner with them in any way.)
I am reviving an "86 420. It looks bad as someone spray painted it flat black...it seems mechanically good though. I think you might be able to modify a factory lens cover to fit over your light bar. It is fun to bring them back into use. NIce work.
I clicked to see diesel mower and ended up seeing another dude with the same mower I sport. I have a 1979 Gravely 8123 (Same thing with hydraulic lift) that gets used weekly.
My exact one just burst into flames from a gas hose bursting. Thing lived mowing 7 acres weekly for 29 years while being kept outside and definitely not treated right lmao.
I WAS WATCHING AND SAW YOU ABOUT TO PUT THE BATTERY TERMINALS ON...THEN I THOUGHT...I WOULD CLEAN THOSE. THEN YOU PULLED OUT THE SAME TOOL I USE...AND CLEANED THEM. I WAS LIKE...THIS KID UNDERSTANDS. HE GETS IT. 99.99% OF MY COMMENTS ARE TROLLING OR JUST PLAIN MEAN, SO THIS IS VERY RARE FOR ME TO BE NICE.
Doing some good work there young gun. I'd like to add a little tip that will make your life easier. Whenever you change, or repair ANY electrical connections. Be sure to Solder the new connections. These will last damn near forever as opposed to the quick Crimping ones. Learned this a long time ago and it really does pay off in the long run. And not to be a nag, but always wear some kind of eye protection when your cutting or grinding. You only get one set of eyeballs, and your gonna need 'em for a long time! lol Keep at this, your doing great!
As mentioned already, if mowing in high grass at high outdoor temps be careful of overheat. I overheated mine and caused the head gasket seal to leak into one cylinder causing extreme wear on the cylinder. By the time I caught it the cylinder was out of wear spec. I bought a new Yanmar short block from Deere and now have a new engine. I also installed a temp gauge on the dash, there is already a place to screw in the sensor near the water pump so installation was easy, Runs about 160 degrees under light load. Side note there also turned out to be a small hole in the exhaust muffler pipe in the engine compartment pumping hot air into engine area, hole was out of sight until I removed old block and removed muffler. That one had me baffled.
You’re not one of my usual channels I watch so when UA-cam recommended this I wasn’t sure but it’s a great video. Also I was thinking how cool the hood turned out right when you said you didn’t like it
My first JD was a used 2xx gas tractor. I traded that in for a 1984 430. I retired that 430 in 2015 - it got to the point where parts were available, but not available NOW! I was at the end of my driveway when one of the hydraulic lines, on the 38 sno-thrower popped. Called the dealer: bad news, we can't get that hose anymore; good news we can build that hose for you; bad news we don't have the proper hose fittings on hand. UGH! I bought a used, year old, x540 with: 54" mower, 54" snowblower, 48" blade, a soft cab, and a 14 bushel bagger. The positives about that x540? It mowed a HELL of a lot better than that old 60 mower! Overall, I wasn't impressed. After the first winter, I traded that x540 off on a used x748; with the same accessories as the x540, minus the bagger. On delivery day, the dealer climbed onto that x748, cranked that Yanmar diesel over, and I was in HEAVEN! Even though the horsepower specs between the Kawasaki 2 cylinder gas engine and the Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel engine are the same, that Yanmar will push through a LOT more snow than that gas engine will! My wife LOVES that old 430 because we had a King Kab for it. There was no need for a heater because the fan blew warm air back into the cab - unlike the x748 which pulls cold air through the cab to feed the engine and the radiator. I also prefer the 3 vertical hydraulic levers on the 430 to the 2 horizontal hydraulic levers on the x748. I still have that old 430. As parts are still available, I'm planning on restoring it...sometime in the near future. My caution to you! These tractors were build in the late 1980s. That's TWO generations of diesel fuel ago. The current diesel fuel standard is ULSD - something like 5ppm of sulphur. The fuel available, when the 430s were build had a LOT more sulphur. Sulphur lubricates the 'soft' components in the fuel system. I had an o-ring on the front cylinder (closest to the radiator) banjo fitting on the fuel return line leaking. I bought a kit to replace ALL the banjo fittings and o-rings but, after fighting with that front cylinder (the o-rings were petrified), I quit. It doesn't leak anymore, but that whole fuel system needs to be updated with 'soft' components that will work with the new ULSD fuels!
Great video! Had a JD dealer get mad at me for calling one of those a lawnmower. “Its a garden tractor”.

I love a good 430. Great video! BTW the inexpensive 755/855 grills on Amazon can be made to fit a 430 with little modification.

Yeah, about $21,000 in today's money. You can buy an 1125r or BX2680 for that!
My next door neighbor had one of these. Over 5000 hours on it and still going strong. Love the way they sound whan mowing.

Very interesting fuel filter. I've never seen an attachment like that. I serviced and used a 425 for a prior employer. It was a really nice tractor.
Excellent video I wish in Australia this model was available.
Jimmy Carter wasn’t president in 1973.
Nice work 👍
Stay well, Joe Z
Awesome find and revival! I can't wait to see what's next
The 430 shares the same engine as the 755. The 655 has the same engine as the 332.
Man love the sound of the small diesel lawnmowers. We had a tore sidewinder and it was amazing
i had 1 of them great machine ! may wanna consider haven it sandblasted an then powder coated did mine an dont have to clean underneath grass doesnt stick
Your bodywork and light on that hood was great
Great job ! I’d try to find a matching front tire, right front sitting on tractor is different. Guess I’m too OCD lol !
Enjoy ! Once you go diesel you’ll never go back to gas ⛽️ 🇺🇸
Looks good enough, thats a working tractor. No fancy B.S. like the new junk and it found a good owner.
While you are at it, Motor mounts should be replaced. I worked almost 20 years at a JD dealership and we sold many sets of those mounts.
You just love your 3 cylinder diesels don’t you? I saw that kubota in the back too
That smooth yanmar diesel will put you to sleep if you're not careful.... She's a runner!
A nice folded metal mesh front grill with lights behind would look mint!
Who makes the engine for that series John Deere?🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I'll tell you what - it looks good from my house. Good job.
You did really nice work on this tractor and I think the headlight looks cool! Great video.
Best lawn mower, garden tractor, bulldozer, beast ever made! Nothing like diesel power for grass cutting, you can cut jude above idle! Diesel torque will throw snow over the moon!
That was some of the best camera and editing work I've seen 😮
a good job done on a worth while machine just a thought might be worth painting the under neath deck with red oxide or somthing just prevent more rust used to do it to mine for a bit of protection
Most excellent young man! You have done well!!! Very nice to see you fixed up a great Garden tractor! What size is the cutting deck?
Daam! What a huge difference you made; awesome work dude!
Nothing runs like a deere to Mexico!
Were they actually made in USA? Alot Of this stuff was rebadged Japanese equipment.
I am reviving an "86 420. It looks bad as someone spray painted it flat black...it seems mechanically good though. I think you might be able to modify a factory lens cover to fit over your light bar. It is fun to bring them back into use. NIce work.
I am going to see if i can find one of them, i know a place to look. thanks for sharing the video !!
I could watch this all day. Great work
I had a 455 and I regret it every day that I sold it. They are awesome machines.
that 430 is a beast
Grandad had a 425 all wheel steer, he passed and i have his x475 all wheel steer, they are the best you can get
I’ll,e your style of bringing everything back to spec. beautiful. I want one!
Gravelys are awesome
Sorry to see the Gravely go but the 430 is sweet...great content....new sub✔
I clicked to see diesel mower and ended up seeing another dude with the same mower I sport. I have a 1979 Gravely 8123 (Same thing with hydraulic lift) that gets used weekly.
Thanks for the inspiration great video
My exact one just burst into flames from a gas hose bursting. Thing lived mowing 7 acres weekly for 29 years while being kept outside and definitely not treated right lmao.
Looks freaking cool dude! Good work! :) Have great midsummers day!
That is one lucky old tractor!
The LED Light Bar is a great addition as it Lights Up what is in Front of you much better than Conventional Headlights.
Great job keep up the good work thank you
Job WELL DONE! DEERE should be PROUD!
Excellent will be be back cheers 🥂 😊
I bought a 1984 782 d diesel cub cadet it is a great lawn mower I love it
Great addition to anyone’s fleet. Just subscribed!
That fuel filter looks the same as an 80s 6.2 gm diesel
DUDEZILLA!!!! In my 51 years on this Earth, I have realized a few things. One of them is, IF it makes you happy then SCREW what others think!!!!!
Same exact fuel filter that was on my 87 Chevrolet Silverado k5 Full size Blazer with the 6.2 Diesel.
That's badass man. I want one
You’re not one of my usual channels I watch so when UA-cam recommended this I wasn’t sure but it’s a great video. Also I was thinking how cool the hood turned out right when you said you didn’t like it
very nice job! are the mower belts exposed like that is there a cover plate for them?
I remember these being sold at Ace Hardware 20 years ago. They wanted 10k for it. I really wanted one but couldn't afford it at the time.
Personally I would have gone for a 455 but the 430 looks super cool too.
