I have easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials "do it yourself" (DIY) videos to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers and zero turn mowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed whacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, zero turn mower, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

learned more about chains/sprockets in 10 minutes than I have my whole life...great video Don
Thanks for the info on .325 vs 3/8.
I always learn something when I watch you.
When you held the two sprockets side by side at the very beginning of 03:09 to halfway into 03:12. showing the gear damage compared to the new on, it looked like the new one isn't as deep as the old one. I guess what matters is the depth is enough to do its thing for the clutch, if I worded that correctly. It's cool how the number of teeth in the sprocket determines the torque vs speed. And I never would have known to align the little grove/notch to the oiler worm gear shaft. I hope my manual covers all of that, and adjusting the carburetor idle and all for altitude. I know I need to do that before I try to use it. It's brand new and unused so far. Thanks, Don! You're the man.
Thanks for the tutorial. A lot of good info for us novices 👍
Very nice and clean fix. Great advice Don, you are a Canadian legend my friend. So clear and concise!! Thank you !
Nice job on the video and repair! Showing both what is a wrong, and WHY it's wrong is a great presentation.
Great tutorial video and very informative.Thank you for sharing
Great video.
Well filmed as always.
👍

LOVE your vids Donyboy! You're patient, & teach well. Hello from Fargo, ND again!
It is amazing how customers will just let their chainsaw go before fixing it. I would want to clean my saw up before anyone sees it. You are a fantastic teacher. I enjoy your videos. I have been running my echo cs 590 for eight years now. No issues. Just clean it up all the time.
Excellent video Donny! I have never worn out a sprocket that badly, maybe I have been tossing still servicable parts. I was taught to replace sprocket after wearing out two chains. That seemed wasteful, so I began buying three new chains with sprocket and bearing; then rotating the chains when one dulls, sharpening all three chains when last one is dull, maybe a couple days work in hard/dirty wood. By the time all three chains are shot, the drive sprocket has pretty good wear too and would be out of pitch with new chains. I notice big box stores rarely have sprockers in stock.
Really clear instructions, with lots of "good to know" tips woven in. Thanks Dony!
Great job. Best small engine repair videos on UA-cam.
Your video on Upgrade Kit for Kohler ignition module popped up on my feed as I've been working on my Cub Cadet Kohler KT-740. I started watching other videos you have posted, and I want to commend you on how great of a job you do! Thank you for clear and concise explanations of repairs.
Thanks for this video. Very informative. A lot of good stuff!
You feel right at home working on those chainsaws. Nice job explaining that
Great video. You explained the pitch and described the difference between 7 and 8 teeth sprocket. I have a 290 with a 20" bar so torque is important and will keep the 7 teeth sprocket. Great detailed explanation of the removal of the sprocket. Clear view of the damaged sprocket and the chain and bar. I need to inspect those areas next time I use my chainsaw and make sure all have the same pitch etc. A great video in 10 minutes.
...another great DIY video Don....very well explained....thanks, and keep 'em coming!... 🙂
Damn good info Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Also send some of that snow to Indiana
Donny boy does a fabulous job because his explanations are simple and he illustrates what he is doing, explaining it to you and showing you the new versus the old parts. Great job Donnie boy! About the only thing I would recommend is that the chain oil reservoir should have been checked and that a thin coating of chain oil should have been placed on the new bar. Chain oil is vital to the functioning of the machine and cutting efficiency. If the chain oil reservoir is empty, one could prematurely Wear Out The Chain and the bar. Hope this suggestion is useful to everyone, take care.
Thanks! Amazing video and great tips and explanations
Great video Donnie very helpful thanks for sharing take care
Hi Donnyboy. I love your channel. I have the same model saw. I replaced the star drum with a rim sprocket model. They are easy to fit and the sprockets are really cheap to replace, or you can run multiple chains and sprockets. Or run different diameter sprockets. Just another option to consider.
Thanks for sharing your expertise with us. Always learn something from your videos.
Brilliant, clear as day video, as ever!
Excellent video! Thank you.
Great tips. Thanks for sharing this with us
Great video Dony, very well explained.
Great info! You did a great job explaining the importance of keeping sprocket, bar and chain with same pitch.
Speed versus torque oh well you have a decision to make which is the one that is the best for you thanks for your help with this matter there Donny
Great teaching, Don!👍
Always enjoy your videos! I noticed the cover washer is missing under the clutch. If the clutch breaks later it will definitely destroy the oiler.
That is some extrahard hardwood!!!
Looks like live oak
fresh oak, was super hard
Nice job Don 👍🏻
That went very well. Thanks Dony and have a great weekend.
Thanks Don. I hope you and your family is well.
Great video Dony! Exactly everything I would have done ✅
Thanks I never thought of petitioning the chain before putting on outside cover
Hi Dan chainsaw video was great, because most people don't know about the chain size
Great video. I’d love it if u could or would do a video explaining all the different pitches and chains etc on a chainsaw. Would be a great video I think
Great video Don thanks for sharing. 🙂👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the video Don that was crazy must not check his sprocket at all. Take care of yourself 👍❤️❤️✅
Thank you, very good informative video!
A bunch of great tips on this one thanks for that 🙏
From the old one too , I shared a chain I buy last year 👍👊
Another great video Dony, thanks.
When changing the bar and or chain, you also have to make sure of the gauge. You must make sure that they both match at either .043, .050, .058 or .063. Don't run a .050 chain on a .063 bar, even though it fits, as it will wobble, where a .063 chain won't fit in the groove on a .050 bar.
Another great video.
Great Video Don!! New Stihl bars are rarer then hen’s teeth these days. I was lucky to find an almost new used bar at my local dealer. I’ll be doing a new sprocket and will go at the crank seals on my 026 over the winter as preventative maintenance.
Don,
As a Wildland firefighter I would be ashamed to use a saw that neglected, that and it's way too small to use on a fire line anyways! Don't people inspected their equipment? Thank you for taking time to film, edit and post this video.
I once thought my chainsaw wouldn't cut. Turns out I had the chain on backwards 🤣. Didn't know you could do that. Surprise.
Great video Donny as always 😊
Good vid. I have a 1995 029 and it has been really good saw for me still running strong with minimal parts replaced and I typically run around 10 gallons of fuel through it a year so it gets used .. When you installed the new sprocket, bar and chain, how much adjustment did you still have in the chain adjuster? My chains always need to be replaced do to running out of tensioning before the cutting teeth are worn out. At one point I replaced the bar, sprocket and chain do to wear (stihl parts) and the starting point for the adjuster was at the midpoint, is this normal?
Thank you!
Learned about 20 things. Nice. Now get what I thought was junk saw out of garage.
That was good info👍👍👍👍👍☝️
Thank s
Good video.
Great info - thank you!
It never ceases to amaze me how people neglect cleaning their power tools after us.
My gear is always cleaned up after use.
My old MS250 is 18yrs old, has average use and is clean enough to eat your dinner off it,
metaphorically speaking of course.
you could slice homemade bread with it!
I just used my 025 from the '90's to clear some blown down trees.
These basic saws are rock solid for lighter duty work if well cared for. (mine is not as 'clean' but not packed full of chips and mud)
Good morning donyboy73, I have what might be a dumb question? How hot should a blower run at when in use/ or when you shut it down? I'd greatly appreciate your help please. Awesome as always good Sir!!!
I'm not sure
Do you charge per hour or per job? I'm just wondering how you cope with unexpected problems. Great vid again with loads of information
grouse work Donny mate and i know the customer will be one happy person for sure and cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🦘🌏 to your area in Canada and keep toasty over there etc.
thanks buddy!
@@donyboy73 my pleasure mate.
Can you convert a chainsaw to a different chain pitch if you use the right size for the sprocket, chain, and bar without any problems?
How do take the engine pulley off of a toro 2 cycle snowblower what you did a couple years ago?
Is there an advantage to using .325 pitch vs 3/8 pitch? Or vice versa?
Hi Dony, in the age of insurance claims etc, for your own protection, do you document the repairs you did to a specific saw in case of an accident and inevitable insurance claim ? Thanks
Great !
How many stihl shops did you have to go to to get all the parts to change the clutch ? I had go to 3 different shops to get all my parts
Good information to learn,
I got my 041av from junkyard, attempting to fix it
Is stihl a good chainsaw brand?
I had zero experience with this brand before
Yes, it’s right behind Husqvarna.
This is Ms 170 new bar wow
I will say, most of my Husqvarna/Jonsered saws have a screwed on clutch, it's nice to just pop a clip and slam in a sprocket on this Stihl rather than pulling out the chisel and hammer (Or, dare I say, the Impact!)
I had to replace the sprocket on my stihl and I didn't realize that it had to fit over the pin for the oiler. So after burning up the bar i tore it down and I also watched a video on it, which I wished I had done that first hand. I guess you learn from your own mistakes.
great video don and Merry Christmas to u
Was there a reason you chose to stick with the stock style sprocket and not upgraded to the newer rim gear? I would think that would be a better choice so that that problem doesn’t happen again.
Thanks much, gotta 290 farmboss 👍👍👍
The “new slightly used sprocket” looks way worse the the used ones I throw out! Maybe I should run them longer?
Nice explanation brother stay safe frosty and free buddy
Cutting some pretty hard wood there Donny
Great video, does it have to be the white grease?
no it doesn't
I expected that new chain to cut that wood like a hot knife through butter.
It amazes me how abusive some people can be to their tools. This just screams neglect. What a shame for a fine machine.
Why not use a floating rim sprocket, or are they not available for that saw?
I think that's the newest looking worn out bar I've seen.
Getting wood chips now
Good day Don I don't understand how 8 sprocket can be same pitch as 7 with same dia.
Yes very good video. Thanks
Pitch refers to the profile of the tooth (or space between teeth)
The eight tooth sprocket is a little bigger in diameter but the teeth are the same .325" as the 7 tooth one.
@@jimurrata6785 Yes I knew that but Donnie said 8 tooth run faster, could not figure how. Thanks for reply
@@donvoll2580 it's like any gearing, say a bicycle or motorcycle.
ABC shaft rpm x the driving sprocket.
In this case 8/7= 1.142 or a 14% "overdrive" with a *commensurate loss of torque.
@@jimurrata6785 Thanks
Questions, don't u need to oil the bar sprocket? I have a old chainsaw myself & I have to oil that sprocket every once in awhile?
I grease the nose roller sprocket at every sharpening. I always pre-oil a new bar's groove top and bottom. I grease the clutch roller bearing every chain swap. Keeps the wear down, especially in hard woods with dirty bark.
you don't need to
some bars have holes to grease the nose bearings. if it does grease it every othr tank of fuel. if it doesnt let it be. the oil will just hold the dirt and may actually attract it
@@donyboy73 Thanks! Less can be more!
Dony really runs a small engine shop to keep his property tidy
Why do you use white lithium grease instead of regular grease?
If you are going to replace the bar, chain and sprocket why not just switch to the 3/8” chain and make finding replacement parts easier on the customer in the future? The repair might even be cheaper since the 3/8” components are readily available.
Plus a chain touch up
If that guy is using the saw that much. He needs a pro sprocket and he needs a new bearing. I always take the air gun and blow out the clutch and springs. Then a dab of grease on those springs.
On a new bar or chain. I always put chain saw grease in the groove. Dry on dry hurts
You would think Captain Obvious could figure out that the sprocket was shot. Never have seen a sprocket that worn.
The lesson here is that the owner did not do the basic maintenance checks on the saw. If he had, he would have replaced the sprocket long ago, and a bar and chain, that had not done much work, would not have to be replaced.
Love your videos and this has nothing to do with you but… the brand new chain being that dull would seriously piss me off. A sharp chain should be producing small wood chips, not sawdust.
Old Timers use to tell me in my youth that cutting frozen wood would dull the chain quickly.(Several days of below 32 F) Didn't know your temperature there but I saw snow outside, and just wondered your opinion.
Don't worry about it. Most work with chainsaws is done in the winter. If there is freezing temperature the trees will hibernate and pull all the water out of the wood so it will not freeze.
Frozen wood is probably some that has been laying in water that has frozen. And that might potentially be tougher to cut through.
Cutting in frozen green isn't great. But snow covered logs will dull a saw almost immediately. He should of put a upgraded chain and bar on 3/8 high kicking chain. The 029 is anemic
Interesting that _water_ would dull a steel cutting chain. 🤔
It makes you wonder what all these fancy ice sculptors do. ???
That wood seem to cut a little slow, that wood must be a little green and frozen.
I had trouble with slower cutting like that with .325 pitch "green" (safety) chain. If you are used to having full pro-chisel chain the difference is very noticable.
I am a stihl mechanic the customer will not know the difference
I'm convinced that Echo saws have poor oiler designs.
