  • In "Skippy's Spark Plug Necklace", Taryl goes over this NIGHTMARE of a fix when trying to replace the belt on this Husqvarna walk-behind mower. It's not as easy as it should be and he's gonna show you why.
    Before and After the fix, local spark plug fanatic, Skippy, shows up with said mower and wants Taryl to burn off his Digital Spark Plug he stole from him at the Portland, IN Vintage Motorbike Show. See how it plays out here in another funny, yet informative, how-to video from your pals at Grass Rats Garage. And There's Your Dinner!!

    Hey Taryl! Certified Husqvarna mechanic here. The bolt you take out as the belt guide, is the only bolt you need to take out. You can sneak the belt up and in there, without taking the cover off. Hope it helps.

      In the 1990s I had a John Deere 21"SP with Kawasaki engine which would quit running every 2.5 years like clockwork. Spark plug would spark, engine not run. New plug would run another 2.5 years. Like clockwork.

      Back when I rode dirt bikes, a 2 stroke, plug tried to foul. I could take plug wire off, put it so it wasn't all the way on, had to jump a gap to get to the plug, a minute of running like that cleared it

      In the 80's my brother had an RX4 13B Rotary Engine that needed 4 new Spark Plugs (on the 2 Rotors) every 10,000km🇦🇺(7,000miles)
      If it ever went a bit more distance, the engine would flood and refuse to start ..
      It was a JAPANESE POWERHOUSE when it ran and Reved to 8000rpm..
      but when it Flooded from Spark plugs, It was a Bitch to start or Dry out the engine (kinda like a 2Stroke)
      Best, easiest and quikest way was to
      1. Change the plugs
      2. Tow it fast for a Clutch start within 20m(18yards?)
      Otherwise forget your starter motor and battery, until it fired ..
      Gotta love Mazdas amazing German Wankel Engine (fun when it drove)👍👍

    With a four wheel drive lawnmower, they have to expect you to go off roading with it. They should have put a cover over the belt.

      @@garysgarage3669 You know what's funny You would think these things would wear out everything being open to the elements. But my mother bought one the first year they came out. She has since passed away and my sister is now using the lawn mower It's 100% original. Even the paint looks good. The problem seems to be with the bagger. You can't fill it all the way up. If you have thick grass it starts to fall back in the mower deck and leave piles everywhere. But yes you can take it off road.

    TIL that there's supposed to be a return spring on that rear transmission. I have strongly considered leaving that front belt cover off or "customizing" it, as it stays crammed full of dead grass with no way to clean out (no bagger, so I guess it blows more in that forward belt path). Had one of the rear baffle screws strip in the plastic, shoved a zip tie in the hole and ran the screw in, has held through a half dozen 1-acre mowings so far. Mine was sans any hose on the tank breather in the airbox, I added a hose to out the bottom of airbox, so that a full tank when tipping up, doesn't soak the air filter.

Anyway, those are a good engine, that was about the only problem I ever had with mine, tiny bits of junk in the carb bowl would clog up the tiny holes, had to find a thin bread tie wire and some carb spray to clean it out good.

After changing the idlers and belt (cost plenty and getting harder to get.) still wouldn't drive. cable was stretched so I tied it in a knot to shorten it. It runs fine but you don't pull the drive handle all the way now. Wasn't going to spend the $ for a new cable.

    very good disassembly and build back.
    i worked on a mower with a self propelled unit as well, rear only. and i can see that by not putting that bolt back is the best decision. it is in the way .
    and shame on them for letting that happen.
    the mower i am working on is a honda, self propelled type. it has a double thumb drive on the handle. the thing is, i think the bearing is bad.
    question, does that style push mower have to be refilled with oil everytime it has to be used?
    i checked the underside, and found that it is all dry, no leaks anywhere.
    and yes it has a rear grass catcher on it as well.

    1st caviar, i am not much learned. Having the pulleys and belt exposed to potentially high velicity sharp objects seems senseless. But, then I saw the wind tunnel. Does that thing help the grass near the center of the deck to stand up straighter so it can be cut down more proficiently? Kinda like the old vacuum clipper haircut system? NM it was just to allow for a bolt , and the belt. So the whole thing is just a shroud. Guess they figure the small area 8nside the shroud is not that susept , prone to getting stuff stuck in there.

    • @brnmcc01
      @brnmcc01 Місяць тому

      No, it sucks up the clippings and fires them into the rear bagger. This mower can be either mulching, side discharge or rear bagger. The blades cut the grass only at the tips, the blade isn't sharp in the middle...

    • @Isaac-47517
      @Isaac-47517 Місяць тому +2

      @@brnmcc01 the openings i was referring to are for exactly what i said, ie, one is surrounding a mounting bolt, probably for the engine, and the other opening is for the belt. I am well aware, since a child, that this type of lawn blade is only single edge beveled at its ends. As for the suction action, that is beneficial throughout the whole diameter below the deck, especially in taller grass, as it , at times, may lay over on itself. If long enough, though the base of the grass may be outside the cut , the tips may be sucked into it, and that , aided by the relationships between high and low pressure areas from shaft to cutting diameter all contributing to upward force.

    The #1 reason I find a problem with the Mowers folks bring me to repair is operator error. Owners don't understand that Mowers on their Highest Cut Setting, are mowing Grass at 3.5-4". Owners lower the Deck setting to lower positions & scalp their Grass. And end up damaging the Decks, & prematurely wearing out Blades from hitting obstacles & lifting Rocks, Sticks & Dirt. (Healthy Grass shades out Weeds!)

      Maybe it was an electric start, but in that case just remove the key from the ignition. Or disconnect the starting battery. Like he said, all mowers made in the last 30-40 years have some sort of kill switch which does the same thing as pulling the plug wire anyways.

    80th Aniv. Breaks and Scrap Em has a plastic cover that you have to remove to replace the drive belt, but you have remove the pulley blade adapter first and of course its frozen/rrusted in place, --and you can't remove that without melting and ruining the plastic cover.

    I did the same repair on the same unit 6 months ago, but it was a bad Idler pully!!! The worst was cleaning the carb, and trying to get the 18.000 gaskets in between all of the correct spots to make this carb breathe properly, because of the two sucky hex bolts, holding every single thing together!!! There are great vid's out there on converting the hex head bolts permanently with all thread, and nuts. I will never, Never, NEVER work on another one of these 4 ton lawnmowers again!!! Trust me!!!
