Honestly, one of the BEST things in the movie was just how well Mario and Luigi connected as brothers: and it just feels like a shame that they we DON'T see that more then we do.
@@macmadness5932 Older audiences would have probably preferred songs that matched Mario Bros instead of songs that sounded like they were chosen from focus groups. I mean, as a friend of mine put it, they COULD have used “Superstar” as a pop song. It was RIGHT THERE. And it’s particularly less generic and more related to Mario Bros than “I need a hero”.
I hate the fact Nintendo got rid of him because I personally believe that it would have given us an idea of how the Toad's life cycle goes. For example, When an old Toad dies they bring new life to newborn Toads after being buried in the ground for some time. Sure, we can keep the fact that the Toads can live longer than humans but don't make them immortal. Also, during the beginning of this rewrite, the Mario Bros. were doing a good job of doing what they do best and I think that Foreman Spike was secretly sabotaging their hard work. And he was the one who cut the fuel line of the Mario Bros' Van when he overheard them when they got the job to help Mayor Pauline's plumbing problem.
Yep. Universal and Nintendo missed a golden opportunity with this storyline. I mean I get that Peach is a girl boss, but even she needed help at some point.
I love the idea of giving Luigi more to do, the addition of the Sand Land scene, and Bowser being made even more menacing. I still think the movie is great as it is, but I think this script would have made it fantastic.
I've seen that bit before, but the delivery of "Is that a frog suit?" "I won't tell anyone how I saved you if you don't tell about the suit." "DEAL!" actually got me.
OMG yes. I have this headcanon-ish opening where Bowser is raging in his castle about not marrying Peach when a portal opens and King Boo floats out, him and Bowser have a debate on who's the better villain, then we get introduced to KIng Boo's main weapon: the Painting which he slams down on Bowser and traps him (at this point Bowser is still small and in a jar) then goes to take the Dark Moon.
That's for sure. I mean I like Despicable Me, but it's nowhere near as good as classic Disney, Pixar, Don Bluth, and even DreamWorks animation. Illumination is more about marketing and promoting merchandise than story, plot, and character.
As much as I love this movie, I do wish it went on for a little longer than 90 minutes, even an extra 10 would’ve given the narrative more significant depth which you excellently provided.
Yeah, I think it’s funny that the Mario Movie is 92 minutes and 17 seconds, just barely shorter than this video. Bro basically just made another Mario Movie.
Most animated kids films are traditionally an hour and 20 minutes, both The SpongeBob SquarePants 2005 and Simpsons Movie are an hour and 20 minutes so why should Mario be longer? Only Sonic 2 was 2 hours even THEN just by a couple minutes extra lmfao
A few things I would like add is: 1. The Rainbow road shortcut could've been created by the Power Star. 2. I would've LOVED it if Luigi says something like, "You need a Player 2?" or, "Need a Co-op Partner?" when he's saving Mario, because it really adds the feeling of when you play the games and your friend, or most likely your brother/family member, joins in and helps you out. 3. After Mario & Luigi defeat Bowser, all the 7 power stars show up again, and Toadsworth returns them back to their kingdoms.
2nd feels a bit cringe idk. it could be better if, when luigi storms off to play kid icarus in the first act, and mario shows up to comfort him, he says 'need a player two' or smth. then it would be a callback.
This was a really great rewrite that provided fixes to a lot of the problems some people had with the movie. You really have a knack for creating cohesive stories and put a lot of effort into this.
That's for sure. I mean he plugged up the majority of the plot holes that the original film had and made an actual story both interesting and entertaining.
I do agree that Luigi should be the one storming off and Mario being nice, as fans typically tend to make Mario look like a bad brother when in reality he actually cares. Edit- Also, I feel like Mario should have TOTALLY used more than the Tanooki Leaf and Cat Bell. The Fire Flower is his most iconic form, and even the Propeller Suit or Boomerang Flower would have totally worked. Maybe Mario steals a Koopa’s shell and spins around in it like the Blue Shell.
Y'know, for all the accusations that Chris Pratt gets about supposedly "never playing a Mario game once in his entire life", he sure as hell knows that Mario is a good brother to Luigi more than a lot of supposed "loyal Mario fans" do...
I WANNA SEE A REANIMATED COLLAB WITH THIS STORY IT WAS SOOO GOOOD❤❤❤ This was a great video Chariii5, I absolutely loved the new story, you and the illustrators did a fantastic job on this
As a two-time theater-watcher of the Super Mario Bros. Movie and as an unashamed Mario stan, I LOVED this rewrite--you took what was already pretty damn great and made it EVEN BETTER. 10/10, I wanna see you fan pre-write the sequel already mate.
I personally don’t have much of a problem with the story we got, but regardless I would’ve loved the movie even more if we got this, hope we get more rewrite videos cause this and the Forces one were so good
it REALLY sucks that a lot of people ignore the storys glaring flaws simply because of all the references and because its "mario". a video game movie NEEDS a competent narrative. i could care lesss about "oh look its the thing" the fact that a story that incomplete got over a BILLION FREAKING DOLLARS kind of pisses me off.
@@slimgrim3607it's not that deep. It is a MARIO movie. It doesn't need a deep narrative to work. Especially if it's meant for children and adults just trying to watch a fun movie. How is the story incompent anyways? It works just fine.
@@islesofforeignrails7917because the movie does what it needs to. Entertains. You think people watch action movies for the story? Not every movie has to be story oriented.
I don't understand why, but for some reason, I always feel way more fear in fearful moments in fan works than in the actual work, probably because they're a lot more unpredictable. I loved this. I did enjoy the movie for the same reason as everyone else, the Mario celebration, but the more fleshed out story arcs of the brothers would've made me love it.
That's an interesting point. I also feel that sometimes. For this in particular, I'd point out 1:16:55, Charriii's narroration along with the art of the characters relief turning to fear and especially the use of the pipe sound, somehow make it kinda creepy as it starts up slow but gradually builds pace all came togetger to make me feel really tense.
Fans don't have the problem of working within a budget (mostly), they can make their stories as wild and fantastical as they want, but they also know how to properly respect the source material and characters.
Now this , THIS is exactly what I would want the movie to be. Not needing to be a masterpiece but at least trying make us care more about the characters and the world of Super Mario Bros. You managed to make me care about everyone and pick my interest in the rewrite than the movie ever could. I also give you credit for the reimagened drawings, the artstyle is adorable and they perfectly describe how the scenes would go. 👍 (Edit: I would only disagree with putting Egad to the film as I feel like the movie already has a huge cast and putting him would be a bit too much)
Yeah, I'd say the Luigi's Mansion side-plot was spooky cool, but it doesn't feel all that necessary at all in the grand scheme of things. Charriii5 should saved that part for a future spin-off film. He should've given Luigi an entire subplot dedicated to where he has to escape Bowser's ship while also learning to be brave. Also, I would cast David Tennant as the voice od E. Gadd.
@@jwroot yeah you're right. The mansion sideplot would be a bit too much. With that said I still wish that Luigi had more screentime rather than doing nothing for the most part. I did found out that originaly they wanted to give him more scenes and be more active in the plot from the concept art but they decided to scrap it because acording to the executives children don't have the attention span longer then 90 minutes. That is the actual reason why the movie was so short. 😮💨
I can't barely stand for how SUPER GENIUS you are explaining about the Brooklyn Flood Accident which is the snow kingdom melted by Bowser to getting the Super Star/Power Star at 26:36 That is the point not only explained why the city is flooded which directly back to the most beginning scene, and also explained the motive why Mario Bros. come here at the beginning, and also give Mario a more serious motive to defeat Bowser instead of just saving Luigi and help them because justice, even better explained both world are connected more closely and make them linked together and make all the sense! This is the first time I see and knowing about the REWRITTEN video, but it already amazed me for how make the movie even better than I know, Thank you Although I glad to see if the movie is extended, it will might make a 3 hour-long movie if the story is possible flowXD
I think we only miss the chance to show Princess Daisy, who also had a kingdom and although not story-wise important (Pauline is still important since Daisy only show in Super Mario Land, that barely people known about it) but still nice to add into the Sand Kingdom, unless we need clarify that Sarasaland is not the Sand Kingdom where Mario and Captain Koopa fought, and they didn't had the Power Star since people love calling that Sand Kingdom showed in the council are reference of Sarasaland, while Mario and the gang travel to another Sand Kingdom in Odyssey, which named Tostarena because the inverted pyramid, I really hope both kingdom can merge together since they really just huge desert and better known as "Kingdom" but with no royalty
At 50:25, I think the Cranky Kong's purpose is fine, but in REWRITEEN version it make another little confusion, since they ask both Power Star and Donkey Kong's aid, but if Cranky Kong really think they should take both of them only if they can fight his son, doesn't mean they only can just need Power Star since they able to fight Donkey Kong? I know this is the joke for Cranky Kong and all the Kongs believing nothing can fight Donkey Kong that easily and just a excuse to let them leave so they no need included in these mess Since in the Original Movie, Cranky Kong taunt Mario by saying hope this fight not ended in 5 seconds and give Power-Up for Mario‘s advantages,I think is better if Cranky Kong let them survival in the fight like 5 min,but Mario surprised everyone by beating Donkey Kong so hard(maybe less damage from the movie, but still win) at the end of the fight, already burst the limitations of the Kongs’ imagination. For Cranky Kong's dialogue in 52:34, I prefer changing to "He think he want grow bigger, but he is still too SMALL to GROW" from "I guess he picked up the wrong mushroom" yeah, this is the third time calling Mario small just few minutes ago, and maybe my lines isn't good enough, but I still hope it can make the jokeXD
I’d add another change to the Mario vs DK fight: have Mario learn to be less reliant on power ups to be a hero and think more on whit and strategy. I’d have Mario even pick up a hammer and smash DK’s barrels being hurled at him like in the classic game. I’d even have the way DK gets taken down be exactly how the arcade game plays out, by removing the beam supports and have DK tumbling down to the bottom of the arena KOed. It’s not only a great reference but a great way for Mario’s character to build beyond going auto-pilot whenever he powers up.
After watching this I'm a little sad that this wasn't the end product we got, because just like with your Forces rewrite, you found a way to dissect nearly every detail of the story and found a way to either improve on what a specific scene was trying to accomplish or change it into something new entirely. I've really been loving these types of videos and can't wait for the next one!
Spoilers to people who haven't watched yet I got so invested into this video that i literally gasp in realization when i saw the chest shoot out of the poltergust at the end of the script, remembering the moment when the chest was sucked up earlier. Honestly this is an amazing rewrite and i do hope that someone in the future would turn this into an actual fan made movie 🙏
Huh I saw that coming from the moment he pointed out the chest in the beginning and when he said set to blow I knew that this was the moment the last star would appear Chekhov's gun and all that
I love these rewrite vids. The care and effort you put into extending scenes that needed a little extra love, the creative changes, the art, the voice acting, the pacing. Its all so good and I really love the changes you've drafted out. My biggest issue was definitely that, while I liked the movie, the pacing was pretty rushed. Yeah its a kids movie, and this seems to be more for the spectacle than say the Sonic movies were, but that doesn't mean it needs to just be all pretty visuals and "look remember this reference?!". It felt lacking, I like it but it still felt that way. But I love your changes, I love the extra focus on Luigi who I agree was very underutilized in the actual film, I love the way you slow things down a little more so that the smaller moments have time to shine. I hope that, should a second movie get announced in the future, they take more time to develop the rest of the cast and give it the same sort of care and attention you laid out here. Also dude, I love how far your voice acting and art has come. Your range is great, your impressions are pretty spot on. I love that you've been getting more dynamic and confident in your art skills as well. Its been fun watching you grow and change and improve as a content creator and I'm excited to keep watching your growth as time goes on. You're a rockstar as always Charriii, keep up the good work!
I kind of wished that Peach still said that Mario is not important when they left because when she and Toad returns to The Mushroom Kingdom and announces that Mario didn’t make it one of the many toads could reply “Who’s Mario?” Making Peach really see how much she took Mario for granted.
It's cool to see you tackle a story with this kind of broad appeal approach. Your passion comes through as always, the amount of drawings you had to do man. Maybe when Bowser's knocked back by the chest he rolls over cause of his shell and lands on his stomach?
@@Charriii5Hey, Charriii! If you want some additional ideas for little edits, I'm happy to share! ▪︎First off, as a little aesthetic change, let's have the Snow Kingdom co-inhabited by both Penguins and Shiverians. Hey, it's not my fault I'm an Odyssey fanboy. ▪︎Let's also make the travel montage a little more fleshed-out. We could see the trio buying a sombrero or riding Jaxis in Tostarena, blasting out of the cannons or being dragged around on the end of a Chomp chain on the Battlefield, finding out Toad has a Fuzzy on his head in the Rock-Candy Mountains, or my personal favourite, Mario getting eaten by a Yoshi and referencing one of his most iconic lines from the Super Mario World TV Show - "Now I know how a meatball feels!" ▪︎During the scene in the Fire Flower Fields, we can touch upon the Mario-Toad dynamic with Mario talking to Toad about how sometimes he feels insignificant in his world, with Toad replying that he secretly feels the same way. Peach isn't just the Kingdom's princess, she's their idol too - strong, tactical, and capable of putting up a fight, whereas the Toads are small, frail and mostly quite cowardly. Then, we can have Mario say that Toad is contradicting his heroic actions back in the temple, saying that size is just a bunch of numbers. Later, instead of Toad being held captive at the wedding, he might be allowed to go free with the others, and that's where he motivates his associates into crashing the wedding and taking back their princess, their idol, and their hero! You said you wanted more Toad in the flick? Mail call for one Mister Charriii? ▪︎Another aesthetic alteration here - you've got seven stars. Why not make them all different colours like in the RPG of the same name? ▪︎A little idea for the credits - have Mario and Luigi take a tour of the Mushroom Dimension meeting Peach, Toad, DK, E-Gadd and Dorrie along the way. As the credits roll, we see the heroes platform through the environments of the different Kingdoms akin to in the 2D Mario games, before they re-emerge in Brooklyn to attend a festival in their honour. After all, as amazing a song as Peaches was, it must be a bit lonely being the only fully lyrical Mario song in the movie, so squeezing Jump Up in there at the very end would be a super welcome treat.
THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE!!! Loved this rewrite so so much. I wish we got this version in theaters. Just some slight tweaks and a few bigger ones could’ve turned this from a fun throwaway film into something with more substance. Also those drawings and the editing in general was phenomenal. Great work.
Fun Fact: Toadsworth and Toadette was cut from the film. Most likely saving their appearance for the sequel. Toadette was teased on a poster in the background.
31:30 This change alone makes me infinitely more endeared to the movie and Princess Peach as her character was presented here. I didn't mind Princess peach being good at the obstacle course, especially, like you mentioned, with the added reality she was raised here. But it felt needlessly...idk...for lack of a better way to put it.... or uh... I'll just say, It felt like a weird add on to say she got it on her first try. Really...dehumanized her in a way and made her less relatable. Such a simple change to it like you did of saying she had pleny of time to get it does so much in my opinion
While I'm fine with the Princess being a girl boss. But when she wins all the time against her opponents and finishes the obstacle on her first try, that turns her into a Mary Sue.
F all that. It turns her into an opportunist. My main gripe about her characterization is that she neither had an export to represent her kingship, nor did she have her own flag so to speak For all the wizardry and magic, she still has to rely on manpower. And the movie insults your intelligence by craftily replacing it with kong power. Like what's all that about? Imploring other nations "he'll come for you too" while it's clearly you Bowser wants. Like the guy doesn't even want her assets or her home. He wanted their itemship which is a you problem Matter of fact, it's a problem known to man which is older than dirt. Women trying to convince us that their safety is above all without actually indicating what makes them essential. And before this becomes an Andrew Tate sermon, I'd like to mention there are a lot of things women have to offer to be valuable. My problem is that both real women and Peach, seldom elect themselves for show and tell. If you can't even be bothered to play a role, you don't deserve to be the main character And it comes full circle. THIS peach _can_ skip to the loo, but tells Mario that the fate of the world is his burden. See, it wouldn't matter if she were a queen of a bunch of mushrooms or the queen of the ashes, she doesn't identify with her own humanity, so she can be whatever the situation calls her to be- a damsel in distress or a girl boss You put the pieces together and the symbolism is plain as day. A dragon comes in to court the woman not expecting for one second to be spurned. And why should he? Her identity is as amorphous as anything you could orient with magic
@@normadgarmez7026 Yeah there are moments in the movie where Peach is a little *too* good at everything. And I can't help but notice that half of the finale carefully adheres to the golden rules in Modern Hollywood Writing: "No woman should ever make mistakes nor be saved by a man." Which is *ignorant* to begin with. Just because a female character is labeled "damsel in distress" doesn't automatically make her helpless, if written skillfully. However, we can be thankful that at least Peach doesn't taught, belittle and overshadow the main protagonist of movie, as she actually helps and supports Mario through his journey. And she's a pretty likeable character all to herself. (Unlike other certain girl bosses)
They completely butchered her character in this movie. In the games, she is kind, caring, and helpful, but she will beat the crap out of you if you upset her, however she isn’t stronger than Bowser. In this movie, she is just a strong, and independent girlboss who is stronger than everyone.
i think this movie suffers from what i like to call “first film syndrome” where in the first film of either a trilogy or anything bigger its meant to establish the world and the characters to both a general audience and its fans and thus suffers on other aspects. into the spiderverse and sonic the hedgehog 1 suffered from this as well where they’re establishing locations, characters and themes but when you look outside of that theres… little substance. but then they bounce back in the sequel where the chains are finally off and they’re able to truly show what they want to show and do what they want to do. the mario movie is currently going through that now and once the strike ends we’ll definitely see mario truly spread his wings and become something greater.
That’s… actually very good logic. I loved Sonic 2 more than the first film, simply because there was more. They did more with the characters and made a story that was well written, had memorable locations and references, and a wonderful cast to voice the characters.
I can’t express enough how much I love this, the way you made things tie together, and line up with each other is actually insane, with Luigi playing a much bigger role an adding to the story is just too good. Absolutely amazing job to you, and everyone who helped you with it!!!
Can I just say how great of a voice actor you are? I've been watching a lot of your Sonic Comic streams, and those along with this really show your versatility as a VA! Great video, also! The Dorrie bit was probably my favorite, although personally I would go a bit more simplistic and just make Dorrie Engurde, great scene though.
seeing these fan rewrites of popular franchises makes it clear to me that only fans can tell a franchise's story better than the actual big companies that own/produced them. the way how charriii explains/references certain details like professor e. gadd assisting luigi or toadsworth being absent for the majority of the franchise clearly shows that he knows a lot of his super mario history.
@@antonyproduction-1People like you are kinda the reason we’re getting these mediocre movies lol. Saying it was fine as it was when there are genuine criticisms towards the film just shows how much of a fan boy you are.
@@supetendo5106 I mean the movie that Illumination wrote is fine. It’s a great callback for Mario fans while being a fun movie for little kids. But I will admit that the movie is flawed in a few departments like the story and music. Why do we need 80’s pop music when we already got an instrumental version of the Mario ost. In the words of the giant coconut crab from Moana, I can’t concentrate, just pick one, pick one!!!
This was an amazing rewrite. You were able to set up a number of elements that you could see where pieces of the finale were coming together. I genuinely wish this was the version of the movie we got.
True. I was waiting for a scene of Bowser harnessing the power of the stars he has for something. Maybe have him take over a part of Peach's castle or something when he's demanding her to marry him as a cute little callback to how that works in Mario 64. I don't know, just something to explain why the Power Stars are powerful or even necessary
@@HyLionoh true true. As of now we just know power stars are “powerful” and “will make me unstoppable” not really why so that’s probably something that could be expanded on.
Agreed, I love this rewrite and one of the few things it leaves me wondering is how to better explain the mcguffins. I like the change from 1 star to 7 for plot reasons but it feels weird that you need 7 to get what is just a superstar. Maybe they could be changed into silver stars and when Egadd explains to Luigi that he's looking for them he also explains that when 7 are gathered they combine to create a superstar, which would make its wielder unstoppable. Or maybe Peach explains that to Mario around the time he learns about powerups, whatever. And that way once all 7 gather in the same place at the finale, it becomes just like in the original movie with a single super star instead of mario and luigi reaching for a bunch of stars.
32:03 Shigeru Miyamoto suggested that Mario doesn't like mushrooms as a joke. 37:09 - 37:15 I didn't even notice that. Good job with the rewrite in general; I like how you gave Luigi more to do and provided a reason for the Bomber/Banzai Bill's eye to be attacked. Keep at it Charriii5; I can see you having a future as a creative writer.
All of this is a pretty perfect rewrite. Though Dorys inclusion should be set up a bit better as to make it in a sense a chekhovs gun situation. Maybe as Mario and DK are falling, DK gets snarky and falls very quickly towards the water knowing that the water will just break his fall like it does in the games so he can assess the situation once he surfaces. Have the perspective shift to Mario as he goes slightly into the water as DKs seen deeper into the water but deep enough to notice that once he stops falling and is starting to float, he's hit hard by a massive object that's barreling up to the surface to avoid something else. Mario barely gets out of the way to catch a breath at the surface as what pops up and goes airborne is Dory with DK on its snout and the morray eel right behind it, presumably trying to hunt it or defend the waters underneath bowsers castle for some reason. Then, after showing that there's still tension to be had, DK falls off relatively close to Mario and the Frog suit scene acts out as you described it. I think it makes it more rewarding to see that Mario has a reason to be afraid of this thing because he previously knew it was in the water, it also strengthens Mario's point that he and DK didn't think their idea of getting out of the morray through. I also think that having a little blue wooden dory in the waters of the map around the start would also be kinda cute since it would be subverting the audiances expectations that it's a barely talked about reference to Mario 64, 3D world, or Odyssey (I forget which one) and show that the refrence was a set up for their appearance.
Oooo I like that. It gives time for Mario’s perspective to be emphasized without realizing he’s afraid of nothing, even though the audience might catch on a bit earlier and shows even more how unfamiliar he is with this world. ^^
19 minutes in and I already LOVEEE THIS OH MY GOSH This feels like the movie I wanted the entire time. I can already tell how the pay off is just gonna feel THAT much more satisfying
OH. MY. GOD. I was planning on checking out like 5-10 minutes of this nothing more. And I ended up watching this like it WAS the Mario movie. This video is absolutely brilliant. I think it does the movie the justice it absolutely deserved, giving more of a focus on BOTH Mario and Luigi, Giving the blue shell more focus, and giving DK and Mario the perfect balance of friend and rivalry he deserved. And that god damn pay off. I can’t believe this isn’t the version of the movie we got. I screamed (into my pillow) in excitement when the poltergeist came back in relevance by the very end, and the TV scene with both Mario and Luigi makes all the sense in the world. Fantastic fantastic work. Like brilliant. I would watch *THIS* movie a million times over.
Man, this was a fun watch! I love the stuff you added, cuz it's not a complete re-vitalized story, but rather adding some smaller scenes to add to the movie, to make the end product have more impact (besides the scene with the dog, I'm glad I'm not the only one who wasn't a fan of that scene lol). The drawings and the voice over was super fun too. Also, if I could add one thing to this that I think would be cool, is when Egad is explaining to Luigi that this haunted land was a Kingdom that Bowser took over, Egad could explain how it was originally Bowser's OWN Kingdom that he destroyed long ago, in search for power, and once he conquered it, he scooped a big chunk of the mountain to be the big ass airship we see in the movie. But now that he's older, and we see how Bowser acts now, we can tell that he regrets those events, due to how lonely he is. It could add an extra layer to Bowser, as to how he ended up like this (plus make him more threatening), and also explain why this kingdom looks the way it does: Dead trees, small lava pools, abandoned castles, Dry Bones and Boos. Admittedly, it does sound a little dark for Mario, but it made sense to me.
Yeeeeaaah but nah I disagree, if we get a rewrite, I think Bowser should care for his minions like he does in the games. And game Bowser would NEVER destroy his own kingdom and kill who knows how many of his own citizens. I want Bowser, not near pure evil turtle lol. Bowser's still pretty evil, but one of Bowser's recurring traits is that he cares for his troops, which wasn't shown in the movie. I'd still keep him burning the Koopa into a dry bones scene tho because it was hilarious lol, and also because it's not really murder- I mean technically yeah it is, but the Koopa can still speak, think and etc just as fine as a dry bones so it's not so bad.
40:02 Long before your rewrite, I've actually written an entire Pitch regarding this very scene. I was kind of upset that it didn't expand much longer as it would have been the perfect time for Mario, Peach and Toad to properly develop as characters and interactions. I made Mario and Peach sit down by the fire after looking up at the stars. Mario begins to talk to Peach again only to see her hugging her knees looking forlorn. Mario's unsure why she's feeling this way and decides to give her some space and talk to Toad. Toad is really happy to finally go on an adventure he always desired, whereas Mario's mildly annoyed with him. Toad would ask Mario if he and Peach really are from another world and says he's very jealous but curious. Mario says he can't believe he did all that training to rescue his brother only to see Toad just come along without any training he did. Toad reassures Mario he knows about survival and says with confidence he can take care of himself just fine. Mario asks what sort of talents do you have? Toad says he can play a flute, cook, pack gear and goes pick up a Fire flower and combines it with a big cube of ice, turning it into an Ice Flower. (The very same one in the climax) Mario's quite impressed. Mario complements Toads upbeat energy but asks why exactly he calls me his best friend despite only just meeting each other. Toad explains because he has no friends. And this is where I gave Toad a bit of a 'Perrito edge' to him as he talks about his backstory in which his peers disliked Toad's hyperactive energy and trick him into throwing him in mud. Mario apologizes but Toad waves his hand away and says he's gotten that a lot. Toad says he never thought he would go on this type of adventure with the Princess and another human and says they made his life pretty special. Mario smiles and says you're not so bad little mushroom man. Mario decides to talk to Peach again, still looking forlorn. Mario asked Peach why she's feeling this way? Peach is afraid to respond. But Mario assures her that whenever his brother felt down, he can always talk to him. Peach finally opens up to Mario that she's sad. Sad for explaining her origins as she's unsure where she came from. Her eyes begin to water up as she says despite not knowing where she really came from or who her parents are, she's really happy the Toads found her and raised her as she doesn't know where she'd be if they were never there for her now. Mario pats Peach on the shoulder. Suddenly, an idea pops in the plummer's head and says to Peach that after they defeat this Bowser guy, Mario can show Peach Brooklyn and what it's like living there. Peach chuckles and says that's not a bad idea and that she wouldn't mind taking a sabbatical from being a ruler. Mario promises Peach that they know they can win as long as they don't back down. And the Pitch ends with Mario and Peach and even Toad having an endearing bond with each other.
Aww. That’s very sweet. I could see Toad being outcasted as the weird one for his hyperactive personality. That’s something I feel all the time, especially as a teenager in high school. And the fact you wrote this as a type of bonding moment, where they all let out their problems and have them resolved as friends to understand each other more makes it even better. You did wonderful.
@@asherrudick3912 I felt the Fire Flower Field scene we got was way too short. With how fast the movie's pacing was, I thought that scene would've been the perfect moment for the movie to take a breath. Thank you very much.💙
This should've been my favorite scenes of all time but i would like to add some, toad is kinda relatable to me because making friends is hard one thing i like to add that he doesn't have any friends with toads that usually doesn't care about him which it makes it hard for him, and we see slowly develop to each character to get know each other easily to things like peach asking mario Brooklyn safe to go out? Because peach doesn't know where shes comes from and doesn't know is it safe or she cant remember anything, we cut to mario and see him kinda feels bad for them how toad doesn't have any friends and peach can't remember where she cames from, after mario tells peach its safe out in Brooklyn and he can show her around after defeats bowser which is also gives peach an idea she include celebrate for cake just like mario 64 ending to give them feel special for them and feel very rewarded after completing the game, which gives mario and toad feels really happy to each other and they are sure they are gonna save luigi and defeating bowser Few things i like to add is instead of a normal tree theres a acorn tree from super mario bros u and the sky could use a star reference like the stars from n64 paper mario or a rosalina lumas star shaped or even heck, add a star shaped from any character icons in that scene like solving a big dipper, but anyway thats a great expanded scene idea!
This is way better than the actual movie. I still like the finished film we got as it is, but even when I first saw it, I always felt like there was a lot of things missing from it. And this rewrite scratches all those itches.
That's for sure. I mean he literally solved most of the plot holes in the OG movie, And in a podcast no less. illumination better live up to their name or else they become like Blue Sky Studios.
I loved the movie but it always felt like the movie was 10-20 minutes too short, and this rewrite fills in the blanks, tightens the narrative, and fleshes out the characters (especially giving Luigi a purpose in the story!) Hopefully the inevitable sequel to the movie addresses the lack of substance and make something as effective as your rewrite. Well done Charriii!!
This sort of thing is how Spider-Verse can work without the sheer scale and insanity of everything becoming overwhelming, because you still follow the story of one or two characters with their specific needs and you see their arc all the way through from start to finish. It’s in a fantastical and insane world but the story is still about one guy with a simple dream.
You pretty much fixed the entire movie with this rewrite. It’s actually really impressive. If this had been the movie, I would have enjoyed it that much more. Especially with Peach. Peach has been capable in the games plenty of times, but I feel like the movie mishandled and misunderstood her, both in personality and capabilities. She was capable in the games, but never borderline unstoppable. You basically hit the nail on the head: She’s too perfect, something that the Mario Movie’s interviews reveal was very much intended unfortunately. Your rewrite fixes just enough about her to make me like the movie version more. And giving Luigi more to do was awesome.
I agree that Peach's flaw is that she may seem too proud of her capabilities but even then in the movie she does also want to ask for help - making her competent but still needs help OR keep being hypercompetent but arrogant and later peg her down a bit.
She's not even too perfect at all, did you watch the movie? She was forced to surrender ffs. This overton window of how capable women in media are allowed to be is still so far right it's sad. 😂
@@yungmuney5903 She surrendered willingly rather than by actually being defeated, and then oop! Turns out she had a back-up plan that allowed her to defeat everyone at the wedding, rather than actually be in a situation where she needs to be bailed out for once. You conveniently left that detail out.
@@railroader2431 fuckboy. Watch the movie again. There's even a youtube video of her meeting Bowser, tell me what actually happened in there. It's not like a Toad was being CURSHED ALIVE RIGHT NEXT TO HER OR ANYTHING. Don't worry, I'll fact check.
I didn't like having a baby Peach enter through the tunnels, her parents are King and Queen Toadstool it would've been a nice callback to them as they've kind of disappeared from lore Amazing re-write!
I'm really a fan of this movie but we can all agree that the story and narrative can improve I really like the rewrite that you propose as it fixes and expands several things that I would have liked to see better implemented with this that apparently the film team is not unaware of the criticisms that are made of it, I hope that they use them as feedback for the sequel Great Video
This video pretty much sums up my opinions on this movie. I remember leaving the theater feeling entertained, but it just felt like stuff happening without much substance. I’m glad there’s a video that addresses this and offers an alternative to improve on it
I really don't know how i can say how much i loved this rewrite, like this is what I would want from a Super Mario Bros. MOVIE, rather than just a bunch of while cool, references that all in all mostly lack substance I was like completely hooked on this rewrite, like picturing it like damn that wouldve been 100x better, amazing job!
This rewrite is incredible! As much as I love the movie as it is, I wouldn't complain if this is how it turned out. Also, I love how you added Dorrie, Its nice seeing some representation on a lesser known Character.
Honestly, theres so much things I would want to say about how good this rewriting is! But I really don't want to build a text wall here 😅 So I'm only gonna said what affected me the most, and that is how you managed to no only improve but CREATE an actual plot to Luigi. The character development and he's on "side story" with proper elements and characters, and of course, the idea of E Gadd being he's guide and support character is truly be awesome!
Yeah, this rewrite was a lot better than I though! This was an amazing retold-story and I like the Power Stars making a major role and even acquiring the Dinosaur Island’s Power (star as reliable as they can be Go Team Yoshi!) but also bringing in some cameos like Toadstool and Professor E. Gadd in the story. Making Luigi do more is a lot better than what we got in the original. Not saying he was useless but just him being more involved with Mario is so good because they’re BROTHERS! And yes I’m super happy that Yoshi will be in the sequel and I am all ready for it!
This version is incredibly interesting and compelling. I was writing something fun around this movie but your version is much more enjoyable so I think I'll use this version as my setting instead. Thanks for the inspiration!
This rewrite is fantastic, I wish this is what we got! It would’ve satisfied hardcore fans while also still being a movie with a well written story. It sucks that we’re just stuck forever with what we got knowing how much better it could’ve been.
Yeah, me too. Wish the movie was like this and people would have like it better. At least, we have something that can satisfied the fans but not for the audiences sadly. But great rewrite due.
To be fair to the movie(‘s Latin American Spanish dub!), when Bowser takes the star, he states “Now I’m invincible!”, which gives the impression that this is indeed a Super Star, and not a Power Star. Amazing rewrite, as always!
Рік тому+11
When it comes to the portrayal of Bowser, one thing I like from the RPGs that I did not really see in the movie or this rewrite is that Bowser is not really abusive to his minions. The minions are loyal to him out of genuine admiration, rather than just fear.
I was actually hoping for a Luigi’s Mansion scene in the original movie and was a little disappointed that it didn’t happen, and Luigi definitely deserved more screen time. I also love the idea of Toad being more relevant to the story
I think a better use/role for Toad was for him to initinally be rejected by Peach, treated as a joke castaway that just couldn't be gotten rid of. This would make the moments where he stays with and helps Peach during the evacuation even stronger, mirroring the same determination as Mario. Other than that, this is fantastic. After watching the original movie, I was kind of in denial about it, telling myself that it was good, but I couldn't help but think it could've been so much more. You delivered perfectly, fixing basically every flaw from the original, while also making it an even truer Mario Movie than the supposed "safe adaptation". It's sad in a way, because I can't accept the fact that this isn't a real thing after watching this video, because it would've been my favourite movie of all time if it were.
Seeing this rewritten makes me wish some of this stuff was in the final product. You did a great job inplemeting certain elements that could've work in the movie. I love how you put in E.Gadd as a partner for Luigi to make it so that way Luigi has things to do rather than be in a cage most of the time.
Fantastic rewrite. I like the filter you put when using the original scenes to keep the footage and the sketches consistent. The only thing I would change is swapping Dorrie out for Plessie because Plessie is more known to be speedy and carry multiple people compared to Dorrie but that's just a minor detail. Great video regardless.
All that being said, I liked it! And I think your rewrites made a lot of sense. Sometimes watching these videos is more fun for me than Hollywood movies anymore, (And THANK YOU for the comment about Peach; not every female character HAS to be a "girl boss". They can be at least a LITTLE vulnerable.) Great job! =)
I mean…. Princess Peach does have a weakness in this movie, it’s that she cares way too much about wanting to save her people. And before you claim that it’s not an actual weakness, it can actually be a weakness to an extent. Like someone you really care about gets kidnapped or is in trouble, and you want to save them, even though there is a likely chance you won’t survive or it is a trap. Heck, Empire Strikes Back shows the cons about caring way too much, as the main protagonist later gets his hand chopped off.
@@UltimateDespairado I didn't say she was completely without a weakness. I just I agree with the host that she and other such characters could use a bit more emotional vulnerability. (the first 'Wonder Woman' movie and 'The 5th Element' are perfect examples) You're not wrong, I just think you misunderstood my point. =)
Exactly. Look no further than other princesses that are strong in their own right, like Snow White ( animated), Sheeta ( Castle in the Sky), Sailor Moon, and Wonder Woman.
Yeah, i mean, they have been getting a LITTLE better at video game adaptations in the last couple of years, but even so, they've still got a LOT to learn when doing this sort of stuff. Or at least, i hope they'll learn...
@@worthybutter2004 Yeah, I hope they learn to ACTUALLY make it like the original source material. Plus, It's weird that the Fans are making Video game Adaptions Way better than Hollywood themselves. I mean, the fans should get hired and Direct a better Film than the Studios changing it for no reason to make it not like the Game. The fans always gets it right. But Hollywood should always listen and Learn their lesson.
there is so much effort and love put into this rewrite, man. each rewritten scene/dialogue is so well put together and it really fits. this video deserves much more attention.
If there’s one thing i WISH they had done during the original film, it would be to have the final fight against bowser use bros attacks from the alphadream games, maybe something like them using bounce or swing bros to show their unorthodox fighting style, it was a majorly missed opportunity to not implement anything from the alphadream series
This was AMAZING! So many scenes where I got goosebumps, exlaiming "Oh my god!" only by your narration and sketches. Love the drawings. You established and revealed so many details that were simply missing from the original film. Hopefully Nintendo and Illumination go this route for the next movie, exploring the characters more, and Luigi simply NEEDS more screen time.
From a cynical marketing perspective, I completely understand why Mario and Luigi are separated. Nintendo and Illumination are testing audience reactions to Luigi on his own. A lot of it is based in psychology. In February 2022, Charlie Day expressed interest in Luigi's Mansion after watching his son play it. Fast forward to March 2023 when the promotional material for the movie is in full swing. Day is now not only in favour of a Luigi movie but Chris Pratt talks about a "Nintendo Cinematic Universe" and specifically mentions Luigi's Mansion. Every review under the sun has complained about Luigi's screen time. Miyamoto and Meledandri are reading every single one and quoting the Hulk: "I see this as an absolute win". Couple that with videos, tweets, articles, comments, etc of how they're teasing Luigi's Mansion and there you go. People don't just want Mario and Luigi to go on an actual adventure together in the inevitable sequel. They want Luigi to have his own movie.
Absolutley love this rewrite! You definitley helped refine the movie and balance the spectical of it as well as the story and character moments, great job Charriii!! I can't wait to see what other videogames/movies you rewrite in the future!!
Super late to this and I apologize for that. With that said, I enjoyed your take on it. Especially since they really didn't give Luigi much to work with. Glad to hear your take on this.
As much as i love what we got in the actual movie, your version sounds so good, And i agree about luigi. I am honestly disappointed that luigi didn't got a lot of screentime since he is my most favorite character in franchise, but i do see why they decided to do that as a way for mario to travel around this new world to save him. I do hope that for the sequel luigi does get more screentime, equally as mario. The dynamic and team work between both brothers is one of the best things about the movie, so hopefully we can get more of it in the next movie 😊
So glad someone is tearing this movie a new one. The Sonic films do better with story pace, narration and character growths. How could it even be called a “Super Mario Bros.” movie if Luigi isn’t really present in the story?
This rewrite was a better version of the Mario Movie that I didn't even know I needed! I couldn't help but notice, throughout the entire movie, that Luigi didn't get enough characterization and it was super disappointing. Along with some things not making sense or escalating too quickly. ESPECIALLY when Peach crashed the wedding as if all the circumstances just went poof. This more brotherly ending that you made made my cry. So good.
15:23 I think the reason why its Kid Icarus is because the game over screen "Im Finished!" Is supposed to be a visual representation on how Mario feels about his plumbing business and he fears that it will fail which is why Mario is seen through the reflection of the tv sceen.
I feel like a sub-plot with Luigi trying to escape with the other prisoners would've been really funny and better to add than some of the filler scenes. Maybe after Peach and Toad are taken in there could be a scene of Luigi freeing Toad who grabs a Ice Flower from the penguins and goes to give it to Peach.
This was so awesome!!! You adressed basically all the issues I had with the flim myself and made them better. I remeber while watching the movie I was really hoping that since Peach commented on how brave Toad is it woudl lead to him becoming "captain" and therefore making him our Captian Toad. And while that didn't happen in this rewrite I understand why - it's hard to force Toad into scenes. I didn't think much on Toadsworth not being in this movie at first but now that you mention it I agree!! It is werid he wasn't here! This rewrite is amazing - I love how you took what the movie sort of layed out but never fully went through with or just kinda left there and gave it reason - or if it had no purpose, to actually remove it. I had never actually heard the orginally music made for the Kart scene and it's so good!! Honestly mad that that wasn't kept in the movie but thank you for telling me about it. Great job!! I'm super excited for any future rewrites!!
I gotta say, I loved every second of this rewrite! I think that you did a great job keeping what made the movie so enjoyable, while also adding a coherent story and narrative! I also wanna point out that the length of this video is almost exactly the same as the Mario movie’s runtime only being 14 seconds apart! I find that to be pretty cool.
Yet another Fan Rewrite being better than the Original, Great Work with the Writing and the Illustrations were a Great Addition, Bravo to you Charriii5. You're a Super Star!
I know that others have said this, but your re-writes are incredible, and the detail and thoughtfulness you put into them is astounding. Keep doing what you're doing, this is amazing! :D I also agree that it is UNBELIEVABLE that Toadsworth got shafted from this movie
I think there should have been a third sequence of Kamek informing Bowser Jr of his father's defeat and the young prince intending revenge decides to call for his cousins the koopalings.
Funny enough, Toadsworth was in the concept art. There is concept art of Mario in what seems to be like a powerup room similar to galaxy 2. In this room, Mario is checking out a fire flower (which there is also concept art of Fire Mario) and behind him are Peach and Toadsworth.
Another thing I'd change is have their plumbing company simply as "Mario Bros." Like the original arcade. So when Spike calls them the "Super Mario Bros." Instead of the "Stupid Mario Bros." It'll mean more as he represents Mario's doubts and now sees him as a hero
That makes sense, considering their song from the commercial doesn’t even refer to them as "Super". It doesn’t say "We're the Super Mario Bros" it just says "We're the Mario Bros"
I usually don’t comment on videos but i just had to because this rewrite is amazing and something i think everyone who was a little disappointed with the movie would see as a breath of fresh air. From the tweaks in characters, scenes, and overall how the movie was presented. Also really glad Luigi was given a part because i hated to see being seen as him not being able to help and his characteristic of being anxious being downplayed. But yeah this was a little long buut fantastic word man 🤾♀️🎉
You know my only real problem with this version is that it still involves Luigi doing basically nothing most of the story only this time with egad and the vacuum. I’m just saying it would’ve been nice to see him do like a prison break is all
Really nice rewrite Charri. I am actually working on my own rewritten version for the Mario Movie. I too plan to include Toadsworth replacing the Toad genral, and also plan to give Luigi more screen time; however my intention for giving Luigi more attention will be much different from yours. After Luigi meets Bowser and tells him about Mario, before Bowser could angrily react, Captain Blue Shell and Lieutenant Patch (The eye-patched Koopa) tell Bowser that Mario, Peach, and Toad have arrived in The Sand Kingdom/Sarasaland and are already meeting with its ruler, Princess Daisy to discuss part of their plan. Bowser then looks back at Luigi and sees this as an opportunity, so he throws Luigi to Captain Blue Shell and Lieutenant Patch and tells them “Bring this shrimp with you to the Sand Kingdom and give Mario a little warning message, we’ll see how tough he REALLY is when he watches you two KILL HIS BROTHER!!!!” Meanwhile in Sarasaland; Mario, Peach, and Toad are greeted by Daisy and both princesses hug in reunion, having a best friend-type relationship. Peach then tells Daisy that Bowser now has some of The Power Stars and plans on using it to destroy and rule every kingdom island ever, starting with The Mushroom Kingdom; and that one of the things The Mushroom Kingdom needs to fight back against Bowser’s army is the Sand Kingdom’s ice-weapons. Daisy knew this was serious as she’s known Bowser just as much as Peach has, but being her best friend they sort of have a friendly rivalry in all sorts of competitive stuff; so Daisy tells Peach that if she wants Sarasaland’s ice-weapons, she and Mario need to beat her in a foot race to Sarasaland’s floating pyramid; Mario and Peach accept the challenge and start the foot race, however when they reach the top of the floating pyramid, they’re shocked to see Luigi in the clutches of Bowser’s two top minions, Captain Blue Shell and Lieutenant Patch. They warn Mario to stop getting in Bowser’s way, or else Luigi gets it. Mario feels conflicted about what to say at first, but then Daisy straight up runs to the Koopas and saves Luigi from their grasp so that nothing bad happens to them; she also warns the two Koopas that if they don’t get out of Sarasaland now, she and Peach will rough em up. However Captain Blue Shell then says “You and what army?” as a whole group of Bowser’s minions show up; As the 5 heroes were surrounded, Peach then gives sees two item blocks and points at them for Mario and Luigi. Mario knew exactly what to do, but Luigi was a bit confused when he saw Mario go up to the item blocks, when Mario busts one of them open he gets the Fire Flower for the first time (because I feel like that was a missed opportunity for the movie) and can already feel the power, Luigi then understands the concept and tries to get up there himself, and when he breaks open an item block, he gets an Ice Flower. A fight begins and both Mario and Luigi learn what the powers of both the Fire and Ice flowers can do, although Luigi throws the ice balls in a more cowardly way as he’s still kind of learning. Eventually after a big fight with Bowser’s minions, the 5 heroes take out Lieutenant Patch with only Captain Blue Shell making out barely, and flies back to warn Bowser about what happened. After celebrating their victory, the 5 heroes camp out in Sarasaland’s Fire Flower Oasis, and this leads to an alternatively written version of the camp scene in the actual movie. This time both Peach and Daisy not only explain their origins about where they came from but also explain the origins of what Bowser has, The Last Power Stars. You see, every 100 years, a comet flies over The Kingdom Islands and Power Stars rain down onto them; these Power Stars can not only be used as power sources, but can also make someone powerfully invincible. However because of that, the power stars were unfortunately used very recklessly by the citizens of the Dark Lands. So to prevent them from destroying and ruling every other kingdom, each kingdom agreed to keep at least one Power Star safe in their kingdoms, so that they would continue to thrive. And since I plan to add a few more character-sung songs into the movie, this will lead to a song where Peach and Daisy express how big the universe is, and how they one day want to see more than just their world. After that song, it then leads to the short deleted scene where Mario tells Peach, “maybe when this is all over you could come to Brooklyn, I can show you around,” only this time it’s both Mario and Luigi telling that to Peach and Daisy. I know it sounds too early to include Daisy in the first movie, but I feel like aside from Luigi getting more screen time, a new version of the 3D World Team is a good thing to represent as a main cast for a Mario Movie. And speaking of songs sung by characters, after Captain Blue Shell tells Bowser what happened, he gets furious, but then remembers that the Kongs won’t easily help Peach and her friends like Daisy did. As Bowser feels less angry, he starts to sing what could’ve been his signature villain song; it starts off with an organ/rock remix of the Super Mario World castle theme where Bowser sings about his plans to use the Power Stars to make every kingdom dark and fiery just like The Dark Lands, and then transitions to happy orchestra where Bowser sings his twisted yet wonderful wedding plans (similar to The Ballad of Lord Farquad from Shrek The Musical) and then ends back to rock/orchestra in an evil finale. Jack Black did originally say that the Mario Movie was going to show Bowser’s musical side, and with this villain song idea, I really wanted to show that. More of the movie plays out as usual with the Jungle Kingdom/Kongo Bongo and Kart scenes, but after Bowser’s ambush succeeds; Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong are trapped in the belly of a giant eal, and after arguing a bit they feel ashamed and hopeless that they can’t get out. But then, a magical holographic image of Rosalina (who earlier is the narrator of this movie) shows up and gives them the hope they need to get out of the eal and save the world. In my mind, Rosalina is a bit similar to Master Oogway from the Kung Fu Panda films in terms of personality, while also retaining much of her personality from the original games. And with this regained confidence; Mario, Luigi, DK, and Diddy get out of the eal and go save Peach, Daisy, and the entire Mushroom Kingdom. When they arrive, the final battle will mostly be the same, but the Mushroom Kingdom will be more fiery and lava-like similar to how Bowser changed Peach’s castle in New Super Mario Bros U, just to make things feel more climactic. If you have any more questions about my rewrite Charri, feel free to ask.
Well, if i'm being honest, a lot of this sounds a bit much. But i LOVE the explanation you gave for the power stars. It makes them feel more important to the story. I wish that was in the official movie.
You did Pauline , e Gadd, Toadsworth, and luigi so much justice. If they still wanted to add a dog make Pauline’s dog the dog from hunt hint and throw in a toadette cameo if she’s not meant for a sequel.
I love how it's unanimously agreed that Luigi needed more screentime.
And that the pacing of the story was not good and the 80's pop songs were completely unneeded.
Honestly, one of the BEST things in the movie was just how well Mario and Luigi connected as brothers: and it just feels like a shame that they we DON'T see that more then we do.
@@jwrootI honestly toned out all the pop songs except "I need a hero" cause it was so unbelievably bland and generic to put there.
i think those songs were for older audiences, i was fine with em
@@macmadness5932 Older audiences would have probably preferred songs that matched Mario Bros instead of songs that sounded like they were chosen from focus groups.
I mean, as a friend of mine put it, they COULD have used “Superstar” as a pop song. It was RIGHT THERE. And it’s particularly less generic and more related to Mario Bros than “I need a hero”.
Toadsworth being Peach's parent through her childhood years is SO GOOD. The story is writing itself here!
That's for sure. But as always we got to let the lady teach herself and not not have a male figure. But vise versa is fine.
Rip toads worth 😢
Speaking of Toadsworth, I believe *Jim Cummings* would have been a great choice to voice him, even for a small role.
I agree but tbh the film was really cool and so fun !

1. Amazingly well-done rewrite, Charii.
2. We need a Luigi's Mansion movie.
I THINK they already confirmed or at least mentioned one.
HOPEFULLY, the sequal expands upon it more, i understand its hard for the animators to fit everything they wanted to see in there.
Absolutely!
And a dk movie
Wow. If this rewrite was in the Super Mario Bros Movie, this could've been and with no exaggeration the BEST Illumination film ever.
true
That's for sure. I mean I like Despicable Me, but it's nowhere near as good as classic Disney, Pixar, Don Bluth, and even DreamWorks animation. Illumination is more about marketing and promoting merchandise than story, plot, and character.
Isn’t it already the best illumination movie ever😎

Right there with you
Yeah, I think it’s funny that the Mario Movie is 92 minutes and 17 seconds, just barely shorter than this video. Bro basically just made another Mario Movie.
I also loved the Mario movie, but this was a great re-write and wish the original was just a little longer as well!
I agree. The movie definitely should've been a bit longer. At least 2 hours.
A few things I would like add is:
You know, this movie could've been 2 hours long if the team behind the movie would've put more time into it.

@@zjzr08 Eh true, I can be wrong at times and that's okay
That's for sure. I mean he plugged up the majority of the plot holes that the original film had and made an actual story both interesting and entertaining.
I firmly believe that Nintendo held Illumination at *gunpoint* when they made the movie-
I do agree that Luigi should be the one storming off and Mario being nice, as fans typically tend to make Mario look like a bad brother when in reality he actually cares.
And I agreed it shows how Mario is caring he is and I also so wish they did more with Luigi instead of cutting him out 90% of the movie.
Y'know, for all the accusations that Chris Pratt gets about supposedly "never playing a Mario game once in his entire life", he sure as hell knows that Mario is a good brother to Luigi more than a lot of supposed "loyal Mario fans" do...

it REALLY sucks that a lot of people ignore the storys glaring flaws simply because of all the references and because its "mario". a video game movie NEEDS a competent narrative. i could care lesss about "oh look its the thing" the fact that a story that incomplete got over a BILLION FREAKING DOLLARS kind of pisses me off.
I agree 👍
@@slimgrim3607it's not that deep. It is a MARIO movie. It doesn't need a deep narrative to work. Especially if it's meant for children and adults just trying to watch a fun movie. How is the story incompent anyways? It works just fine.
@@islesofforeignrails7917 spoilers (jk lol)
But I can see you're point. But it doesn't need a narrative to work
@@islesofforeignrails7917because the movie does what it needs to. Entertains. You think people watch action movies for the story? Not every movie has to be story oriented.
Rewritten Bowser: "A stupid red hat"
Cappy: Ok time to die
I don't understand why, but for some reason, I always feel way more fear in fearful moments in fan works than in the actual work, probably because they're a lot more unpredictable.
I loved this. I did enjoy the movie for the same reason as everyone else, the Mario celebration, but the more fleshed out story arcs of the brothers would've made me love it.
I agree with you
That's an interesting point.

@@julianemery718 that it’s true 👍
Now this , THIS is exactly what I would want the movie to be. Not needing to be a masterpiece but at least trying make us care more about the characters and the world of Super Mario Bros. You managed to make me care about everyone and pick my interest in the rewrite than the movie ever could. I also give you credit for the reimagened drawings, the artstyle is adorable and they perfectly describe how the scenes would go. 👍
(Edit: I would only disagree with putting Egad to the film as I feel like the movie already has a huge cast and putting him would be a bit too much)
Man I would replace E. Gadd with Yoshi lmao
Absolutely agree!!
@@messyjoy899 Who cares if they have short attention spans, they'll just have to learn how to pay closer attention one way or other, anyway.
I can't barely stand for how SUPER GENIUS you are explaining about the Brooklyn Flood Accident which is the snow kingdom melted by Bowser to getting the Super Star/Power Star
at 26:36
That is the point not only explained why the city is flooded which directly back to the most beginning scene, and also explained the motive why Mario Bros. come here at the beginning, and also give Mario a more serious motive to defeat Bowser instead of just saving Luigi and help them because justice, even better explained both world are connected more closely
and make them linked together and make all the sense!
This is the first time I see and knowing about the REWRITTEN video, but it already amazed me for how make the movie even better than I know, Thank you
Although I glad to see if the movie is extended, it will might make a 3 hour-long movie if the story is possible flowXD
I think we only miss the chance to show Princess Daisy, who also had a kingdom and although not story-wise important (Pauline is still important since Daisy only show in Super Mario Land, that barely people known about it) but still nice to add into the Sand Kingdom, unless we need clarify that Sarasaland is not the Sand Kingdom where Mario and Captain Koopa fought, and they didn't had the Power Star
since people love calling that Sand Kingdom showed in the council are reference of Sarasaland, while Mario and the gang travel to another Sand Kingdom in Odyssey, which named Tostarena because the inverted pyramid, I really hope both kingdom can merge together since they really just huge desert and better known as "Kingdom" but with no royalty
I know this is the joke for Cranky Kong and all the Kongs believing nothing can fight Donkey Kong that easily and just a excuse to let them leave so they no need included in these mess
Since in the Original Movie, Cranky Kong taunt Mario by saying hope this fight not ended in 5 seconds and give Power-Up for Mario‘s advantages,I think is better if Cranky Kong let them survival in the fight like 5 min,but Mario surprised everyone by beating Donkey Kong so hard(maybe less damage from the movie, but still win) at the end of the fight, already burst the limitations of the Kongs’ imagination.
For Cranky Kong's dialogue in 52:34, I prefer changing to "He think he want grow bigger, but he is still too SMALL to GROW" from "I guess he picked up the wrong mushroom"
yeah, this is the third time calling Mario small just few minutes ago, and maybe my lines isn't good enough, but I still hope it can make the jokeXD
Great! I'd also add a cinematic rendition of the classic DK theme during the fight, too!
I was thinking the same thing the whole time.
Well, I think that Mario would throw the hammer at Donkey Kong, like in the Pixel movie. It's pretty cool, right?
After watching this I'm a little sad that this wasn't the end product we got, because just like with your Forces rewrite, you found a way to dissect nearly every detail of the story and found a way to either improve on what a specific scene was trying to accomplish or change it into something new entirely. I've really been loving these types of videos and can't wait for the next one!

I got so invested into this video that i literally gasp in realization when i saw the chest shoot out of the poltergust at the end of the script, remembering the moment when the chest was sucked up earlier.
Nice comment Kira where is your death note ? 🤔
Nope the pacing wasn’t rushed and no scene needed extra love, the art and the voice acting and the pacing in this rewrite sucks and it’s all not good
It does mean it needs to be pretty visuals and the story doesn’t need to be over complex. It doesn’t feel lacking
Luigi wasn’t underutilized and slowing things down doesn’t make it great and smaller moments shouldn’t have time to shine
No the cast is fine in the actual movie
I kind of wished that Peach still said that Mario is not important when they left because when she and Toad returns to The Mushroom Kingdom and announces that Mario didn’t make it one of the many toads could reply “Who’s Mario?” Making Peach really see how much she took Mario for granted.
It's cool to see you tackle a story with this kind of broad appeal approach. Your passion comes through as always, the amount of drawings you had to do man.
Maybe when Bowser's knocked back by the chest he rolls over cause of his shell and lands on his stomach?
Love you, Greg. ❤
I just wish Bowser didn't have back spikes so we could have him on his back like the silly little turtle he is.
@@Charriii5 ... Wouldn't the spikes be another reason for Bowser to get stuck?
@@Charriii5Hey, Charriii! If you want some additional ideas for little edits, I'm happy to share!
▪︎First off, as a little aesthetic change, let's have the Snow Kingdom co-inhabited by both Penguins and Shiverians. Hey, it's not my fault I'm an Odyssey fanboy.
▪︎Let's also make the travel montage a little more fleshed-out. We could see the trio buying a sombrero or riding Jaxis in Tostarena, blasting out of the cannons or being dragged around on the end of a Chomp chain on the Battlefield, finding out Toad has a Fuzzy on his head in the Rock-Candy Mountains, or my personal favourite, Mario getting eaten by a Yoshi and referencing one of his most iconic lines from the Super Mario World TV Show - "Now I know how a meatball feels!"
▪︎During the scene in the Fire Flower Fields, we can touch upon the Mario-Toad dynamic with Mario talking to Toad about how sometimes he feels insignificant in his world, with Toad replying that he secretly feels the same way.
@@Charriii5Maybe his back spikes could break, like when you stun him in the first Galaxy game?
@Charriii5 well, in some of the games, his spikes are retractable, so it wouldn't be weird

This change alone makes me infinitely more endeared to the movie and Princess Peach as her character was presented here.
God forbid women having talent that isn't stereotypical lmao
While I'm fine with the Princess being a girl boss. But when she wins all the time against her opponents and finishes the obstacle on her first try, that turns her into a Mary Sue.
F all that. It turns her into an opportunist. My main gripe about her characterization is that she neither had an export to represent her kingship, nor did she have her own flag so to speak
For all the wizardry and magic, she still has to rely on manpower. And the movie insults your intelligence by craftily replacing it with kong power. Like what's all that about?
Imploring other nations "he'll come for you too" while it's clearly you Bowser wants. Like the guy doesn't even want her assets or her home. He wanted their itemship which is a you problem
Matter of fact, it's a problem known to man which is older than dirt. Women trying to convince us that their safety is above all without actually indicating what makes them essential. And before this becomes an Andrew Tate sermon, I'd like to mention there are a lot of things women have to offer to be valuable. My problem is that both real women and Peach, seldom elect themselves for show and tell. If you can't even be bothered to play a role, you don't deserve to be the main character
And it comes full circle. THIS peach _can_ skip to the loo, but tells Mario that the fate of the world is his burden. See, it wouldn't matter if she were a queen of a bunch of mushrooms or the queen of the ashes, she doesn't identify with her own humanity, so she can be whatever the situation calls her to be- a damsel in distress or a girl boss
You put the pieces together and the symbolism is plain as day. A dragon comes in to court the woman not expecting for one second to be spurned. And why should he? Her identity is as amorphous as anything you could orient with magic
@@normadgarmez7026
Yeah there are moments in the movie where Peach is a little *too* good at everything.
I honestly love this rewrite, even as someone who liked the original as little more than just a fun movie to turn your brain off to
i think this movie suffers from what i like to call “first film syndrome” where in the first film of either a trilogy or anything bigger its meant to establish the world and the characters to both a general audience and its fans and thus suffers on other aspects. into the spiderverse and sonic the hedgehog 1 suffered from this as well where they’re establishing locations, characters and themes but when you look outside of that theres… little substance. but then they bounce back in the sequel where the chains are finally off and they’re able to truly show what they want to show and do what they want to do. the mario movie is currently going through that now and once the strike ends we’ll definitely see mario truly spread his wings and become something greater.
That’s… actually very good logic. I loved Sonic 2 more than the first film, simply because there was more. They did more with the characters and made a story that was well written, had memorable locations and references, and a wonderful cast to voice the characters.
The rewrite is amazing. The Luigi part makes a good plot for a sequel of what happened to Luigi during Mario’s journey to save him
I can’t express enough how much I love this, the way you made things tie together, and line up with each other is actually insane, with Luigi playing a much bigger role an adding to the story is just too good.

This seems a lot better than the original, but I feel like you could’ve explained the power stars and what they do on their own more
That's a very good point. But at least he made the story better.
Honestly, to leave the Star power up as is would work better for this story. The Star power up is the

Good job with the rewrite in general; I like how you gave Luigi more to do and provided a reason for the Bomber/Banzai Bill's eye to be attacked.
Keep at it Charriii5; I can see you having a future as a creative writer.
This is the way, he can definetly make it into the industry is he wishes to. These rewrites are really helping him sharpen his intellectual sword!
19 minutes in and I already LOVEEE THIS OH MY GOSH
This feels like the movie I wanted the entire time.
I agree this was a fun watch.

Long before your rewrite, I've actually written an entire Pitch regarding this very scene.
Because peach doesn't know where shes comes from and doesn't know is it safe or she cant remember anything, we cut to mario and see him kinda feels bad for them how toad doesn't have any friends and peach can't remember where she cames from, after mario tells peach its safe out in Brooklyn and he can show her around after defeats bowser which is also gives peach an idea she include celebrate for cake just like mario 64 ending to give them feel special for them and feel very rewarded after completing the game, which gives mario and toad feels really happy to each other and they are sure they are gonna save luigi and defeating bowser
Few things i like to add is instead of a normal tree theres a acorn tree from super mario bros u and the sky could use a star reference like the stars from n64 paper mario or a rosalina lumas star shaped or even heck, add a star shaped from any character icons in that scene like solving a big dipper, but anyway thats a great expanded scene idea!

I loved the movie but it always felt like the movie was 10-20 minutes too short, and this rewrite fills in the blanks, tightens the narrative, and fleshes out the characters (especially giving Luigi a purpose in the story!)
Hopefully the inevitable sequel to the movie addresses the lack of substance and make something as effective as your rewrite.
Well, at least Peach didn't constantly belittle or overshadow the main protagonist of the movie. That could've been FAR worse.
I didn't like having a baby Peach enter through the tunnels, her parents are King and Queen Toadstool it would've been a nice callback to them as they've kind of disappeared from lore
Amazing re-write!
I'm really a fan of this movie but we can all agree that the story and narrative can improve
I really like the rewrite that you propose as it fixes and expands several things that I would have liked to see better implemented
with this that apparently the film team is not unaware of the criticisms that are made of it, I hope that they use them as feedback for the sequel
Great Video
This video pretty much sums up my opinions on this movie. I remember leaving the theater feeling entertained, but it just felt like stuff happening without much substance. I’m glad there’s a video that addresses this and offers an alternative to improve on it
It's to be expected from the studios that make Minions. But also Nintendo with the people in charge who want more gameplay hardly any story.
These rewritten videos are more entertaining (and more time consuming, too) than most video essays. Excellent job as always, Charriii!
I really don't know how i can say how much i loved this rewrite, like this is what I would want from a Super Mario Bros. MOVIE, rather than just a bunch of while cool, references that all in all mostly lack substance
I was like completely hooked on this rewrite, like picturing it like damn that wouldve been 100x better, amazing job!
The character development and he's on "side story" with proper elements and characters, and of course, the idea of E Gadd being he's guide and support character is truly be awesome!
i remember watching this movie in theaters on day one, and watching someone rewriting is just heartwarning to me
Yeah, this rewrite was a lot better than I though!
It sucks we can't be thankful for what we fucking get instead of appreciating WHAT WE GOT!! FUCK THE FANS!!
When it comes to the portrayal of Bowser, one thing I like from the RPGs that I did not really see in the movie or this rewrite is that Bowser is not really abusive to his minions. The minions are loyal to him out of genuine admiration, rather than just fear.
FINALLY someone who is a Mario fan perfectly points out the issues of the Mario Movie and attempts to fix it! 😭
This rewrite makes the final movie feel like a first rough draft.
Maybe it was and because it has the Super Mario IP, it would be successful. Which it was, but now how are you going to follow it up long term.
@@BuckarooBanzai84 oh okay. Thanks for clarifying.
@@UltimateDespairado Don't mention it. Take care! =)
Exactly. Look no further than other princesses that are strong in their own right, like Snow White ( animated), Sheeta ( Castle in the Sky), Sailor Moon, and Wonder Woman.
Better than Hollywood doing their job on Adapting Video games into movies.
I LOVE this rewrite. I don't think I can even form a proper sentence to show how much.
there is so much effort and love put into this rewrite, man. each rewritten scene/dialogue is so well put together and it really fits. this video deserves much more attention.
Fun Fact: Luigi's Mansion was planned for the film, but is gonna be made into a spin off film along with Donkey Kong Country.
Wait wut
Source?
You should do a fan sequel to this. If you can do a Mario re-write this good, imagine what you could do with a whole new movie!
Why does this only have 3 likes!?!?!?
As much as i love what we got in the actual movie, your version sounds so good, And i agree about luigi. I am honestly disappointed that luigi didn't got a lot of screentime since he is my most favorite character in franchise, but i do see why they decided to do that as a way for mario to travel around this new world to save him. I do hope that for the sequel luigi does get more screentime, equally as mario. The dynamic and team work between both brothers is one of the best things about the movie, so hopefully we can get more of it in the next movie 😊
Luigi was so heavily sidelined in the original movie.
I'm glad he got more screen time and involvement in this rewrite.
Yo, all these rewriting videos are pretty cool to watch. And this one was very long yet definitely worth to watch
Agreed.
Charri5 could done that instead of doing an entire sublot that should be saved for the Luigi's Mansion spin-off film.
Whoa! I just imagined the whole movie in my head! I WANT IT NOW
I gotta say, I loved every second of this rewrite!
Removing none of the bowser scenes makes the rewrite an instant 10/10, seriously though amazing work
I know that others have said this, but your re-writes are incredible, and the detail and thoughtfulness you put into them is astounding.
I had been itching to rewrite this film after writing a script of my own prior to the film's release. It's so awesome to see you tackle it!
Funny enough, Toadsworth was in the concept art. There is concept art of Mario in what seems to be like a powerup room similar to galaxy 2. In this room, Mario is checking out a fire flower (which there is also concept art of Fire Mario) and behind him are Peach and Toadsworth.
I absolutely love this rewrite. Obviously this rewrite would have been a lot longer than the original which I think was very much needed.
"If you're gonna stomp a Turty in Act 3, you need to show a Turt in Act 1. It's science bro. Perchance"
-Sun Tsu
Bowser then looks back at Luigi and sees this as an opportunity, so he throws Luigi to Captain Blue Shell and Lieutenant Patch and tells them “Bring this shrimp with you to the Sand Kingdom and give Mario a little warning message, we’ll see how tough he REALLY is when he watches you two KILL HIS BROTHER!!!!”
Meanwhile in Sarasaland; Mario, Peach, and Toad are greeted by Daisy and both princesses hug in reunion, having a best friend-type relationship.
Wow, nice rewrite, I love it.
what i learned from this:
-luigi and toad need way more development
-bowser is the best character
You did Pauline , e Gadd, Toadsworth, and luigi so much justice. If they still wanted to add a dog make Pauline’s dog the dog from hunt hint and throw in a toadette cameo if she’s not meant for a sequel.
