Drivin' Me Bananas not making it in annoys me the most out of all of these. You're telling me we missed out on an amazing rendition of the DKC theme in favor of the most unfitting song in the entire soundtrack?
I get furious thinking of the higher ups who were like "use a song people will recognize like 'Take On Me'", completely disregarding how iconic the David Wise Donkey Kong music has become in it's own right. If they do a Donkey Kong movie, I really hope they lean more in to the tracks from the game over licensed music (though a "Welcome to the Jungle" moment seems inevitable).

The fact that all of these songs were fully finished, and Illumination STILL decided to pay for licensed songs that didn’t even fit the scene is the most painful part of the movie 💀

Oh man I’m pissed we didn’t get to hear these original compositions in the movie. They fit so much better than the 80s tracks. There’s enough nostalgia and general appeal in the film already - we don’t need more member berries.

I think holding out for a hero worked better, because "World 1-1" is just the movie's leitmotif played over and over. Also I'm not sure who thought that leitmotif was a good idea, it's incredibly basic and sounds like "generic heroic jingle"

I remember watching the movie in the cinema with my bf and we both cringed whenever a licensed song suddenly showed up. The original music is indeed a whole lot better and it's a shame some of it went unused

Like it sucks really bad but this movie is so mainstream that the amount of people happy with the licensed songs probably heavily outways the fans who would recognize these tracks.

I am so unbelievably mad at Press Start's exclusion, it makes that whole sequence so much cooler
It also foreshadows the climax only with the music which is very cool

Well the music was specifically made for the scenes, so yeah cx A director's cut with the unused music alongside the missing scenes would be dope but I doubt they'll do that

The final battle was originally planned to have Van Halen’s Jump, but luckily Bryan Tyler managed to keep Superstars! (I think that’s the title) in the final release.
With the fact that they actually had the STAR POWER, it would be criminal not to include the star theme. At least they got that part right.
At least there would have been logic to including that song: most Mario games are about jumping. But you can't exclude the leitmotif for a special power-up!
(Seriously, though. As a critic, I found it out of place for there to be licensed songs, given that Nintendo had previously made their own original songs before.)

It's so sad that the composer's music was not used in the movie and these unused tracks fit so much better in the film.
Honestly this makes everything feel... less Illumination. It makes it feel like a animated film, and more of a love letter to Mario rather than a marketing machine.
Edit: I will admit that they use the 1-1 Letimotif far too much in these. Would have been nice to hear some SMW or even SML (Super Mario Land) in there.

I was fine with Mr. Blue Sky, cause it kind of was like a fake-out. Like did Mario and Luigi go back to Brooklyn after their adventure? Then the door opens and it's revealed they actually moved to the Mushroom Kingdom
However, I will never forgive Illuminations for cutting Drivin' Me Bananas, that was criminal and rude

Honestly, as much as I like 80s music, it’s such a shame that these weren’t in the film instead. It would be really nice if they could make an extended edition including some deleted scenes and add these in.
Imo every movie should have an "Alternate Universe Cut" like Into the Spider-Verse's Blu Ray release has, where they reverse all the dumbass decisions made by the producers and studio and reimplement all the cut and unfinished scenes, alternate shots, alternate line reads, and music

Driving Me Bananas is literally my favorite song in the movie, and I was so upset when I realized it was unused when relistening to the soundtrack. DKC being my childhood alongside Mario World if they had gone with all the original music I would’ve been in heaven because it’s Mario, he doesn’t need licensed music in his movie.
I actually liked Mr. Blue Sky at the very end, but everything else felt out of place. Drivin' Me Bananas is now my favorite unused track 💛

Mr. Blue Sky was probably the one licensed choice I did enjoy, though I would have popped off so hard to hear the Mario RPG Toad Town leitmotif of all things.
Mr. Blue Sky and Thunderstruck were the only songs I felt somewhat worked. Everything else, especially Take On Me, was kinda meh.

Press Start including the Starman theme would have ruined it's impact when you finally hear it in SuperStars at the end. I would rather 2 Player Game be used instead.
Honestly keep No sleep til Brooklyn but the others are an improvement.
If implemented well it can be great, for example Megamind. But for it to work you'll need to be creative.

I’m willing to let most of the license music choices slide because at least, even with these parts cut from the movie, the score is still phenomenal and has its moment to shine
“Take on Me” over “Drivin’ Me Bananas” is the only exception, but still.
The movie's licensed songs feel like the inverse of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, where the show was timed around its licensed music, while here they feel shoehorned in.
I'm actually fine with most of the licensed songs, but like pretty much everyone else here I think Driving Me Bananas being cut was 100% a rip-off. I do like Press Start better than No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn also but that one isn't as much of a total deal-breaker

While I do wish these tracks were used in the movie, I’m just glad Brian Tyler’s “SuperStars” was chosen for the Climax of the movie over Van Halen’s “Jump”. It’s a great song, but SuperStars is incredible for the scene.
The fact that there was ANY consideration of swapping Brian's compositions with licensed music is baffling to me
Literally the first joke I made when the movie was first announced was "the trailer is probably gonna use Van Halen's Jump". I'm glad I was proven wrong, but only barely.

None of the licensed tracks are bad songs, but they don't fit the movie at all.
It's like instead of your favorite grandma driving you to school suddenly you're told a famous F1 racer is driving you. Sure, the latter situation is more prestigious and there is no doubt about their skill, but to be honest, you'd probably be more comfortable with grandma at the wheel.
If you don't know, Superstars was almost replaced with Van Halen's "Jump". Thank the fucking lord that didn't happen

Oh. That DK Isle theme is awesome, and a lot of the rest of this music is really good too. But, the thing that pushed it over the edge of "I need this" is that last track which has a tiny bit of the Mushroom Kingdom theme from _Super Mario RPG._

The licenced music will age like milk, while these just make the scenes feel complete and artistic. Wish these made the final cut!

Extended the Press Start and Bonus Level scenes to fit a little better with the music. Besides that not much else is changed form the previous version. Still scuffed in some places but what can one do without the original files~

honestly i'm okay with the final movie not having most of these, but drivin' me bananas is so good. i think the movie should have done a little more with the setting of donkey kong country and throwing in that song would have gone such a long way.

I think what Illumination forgot about Mario here is that over that past several decades mamy mario games have had a total of over 100 tracks each; most of them being unique and iconic. They didn't need to license these songs for the viewers to be able to know what the song is, just play Super Bell Hill and everyone will cheer.
Thanks for making this! I HATED the music drops in the movie. so much so I missed A LOT of details and references to the games like mario putting his arms up while running and the way he slides down poles.

I feel like they wanted that to be the movies theme in the same way every Mario game has its own original theme. It’s really nice too, shame it was cut in a few scenes
The movie has three new leitmotifs:
That one, which is the main theme, one for Peach, and one for Bowser. You can hear more full versions of Peach's and Bowser's motifs in 2-Player-Game and Super Mario Bros. Opus.
This makes me love the original soundtrack even more now! I’m still kinda upset that THIS wasn't in the movie and instead, we got the mainstream songs.

Still astonishing how much the score better fits the film... ...despite a very good chunk of it still being in the final film.
I'll admit that the only needle drop that I felt was out of place was the Take On Me one, but I absolutely get why many had issues with the needle drops. Either way, Brian Tyler's score was easily one of the film's highlights and hearing more of it is always a plus.
This sounds so much better and I don't understand why It didn't make the cut when it all sounded so finished and good.
These Original tracks hit hard. Who ever decided against using them in the Final Cut deserves a banana slamma 🍌

When I first saw this film, I didn't sign up for listening to Ready Player One's cutting room floor. These edits fix all of that. Nintendo, PLEASE make a new cut with these unused tracks!

There are some dedicated people out there who do recuts and restorations of movies and I dearly hope that we one day will see a version of this movie with this mosic in it. Not only are these fantastic renditions filled with adorable references that keeps the beat going, but it also feels like the music writer got cheated out by not having these in. Let this be another example that jukebox films might be easier to make, but original scores just fit better since they are tailored to the movie.

Other than No Sleep Til Brooklyn, I couldn’t care less for the licensed tracks. I do hope they have a version with Brian Tyler’s restored music, especially Driving Me Bananas. Got chills hearing the Donkey Kong and Jungle Hijinx themes.
So so so much better. Makes the movie almost feel like a sincere adaptation rather than a cynical cash grab.

Reminds me of Super Mario Bros. Super Show but in reverse where the former show had licensed songs in the original but changed to original music while the latter movie had original tracks but they changed to licensed songs.
I seriously hope we get an alternative edit of this movie with these songs in their rightful place, while still being able to watch the original theatrical release version as well.
All of these combine better and are more pleasant that all of those overused songs. They should give us the version with the entirety of the OS. Really makes me think if the producers put them thinking it would make people appreciate the movie more, and I'm like.. It's Super Mario? How much more do you want the people to appreciate it??
