Doc Shoddy you are the best person i have ever seen in addition it is thanks to this Reddit post that I discovered your drawing on a Shy Guy and a Bandit Gf !
This video has the greatest form of art references from not only just how to do it but breaking down the yes' and the no-no's of the different art styles.
Absolutely. Normally, when you want to recreate a style you have to trial and error until you figure this all out yourself. This is one of my favorite new channels
NOW THIS IS A NICE VIDEO. As someone who regularly takes commissions to draw characters in these iconic Mario art styles, I found it really insightful to hear your take on them. There were even some tips that I’ve never even noticed, like at 3:28 where male and female characters have different highlights in their eyes. Now whenever someone asks me how I draw in these styles, I’ll simply link them to this video. This is incredibly helpful and it’s surprising to see not that many videos covering it.
I’ve never been able to move past “chicken-scratch” stage. I mean, I can clean it up afterwards, but drawing smooth lines, especially with a not-so-steady hand can be so challenging and frustrating. I envy those that can draw without sketchy outlines.
just practice drawing curved lines, swirls, spirals, waves, as well as angles and straight lines, like zig zags and stuff. do it with as much intent as possible. Then mix straight lines, curved lines and angles shapes. dont worry about what the shapes look like, just try to close the outline. keep trying to increase speed and decisiveness as you go. hopefully this is a helpful step towards getting those lines down in one go! I filled like half a notebook with abstract shapes and line work while i was practicing.
Something that might help is even if it’s frustrating, focus on doing one quick continuous line rather than a lot of even faster small lines. It will make your art way faster to do and more precise.
Have you tried drawing from your shoulder? I've had the same problem and its because I'm very used to drawing with my wrist. You basically dont move your wrist and elbow, and make the stroke by moving your shoulder.
I think the one crucial thing you forgot to mention about the Mario strikers artstyle is the posing. Even if we just compare the official art with yours at 4:12, the mario looks way more dynamic, his whole body in the shape of a triangle, the posing of the arms and head both pointing the eye in the direction of the ball. It also uses a bit of forced perspective (notice how his left leg is bigger than the right one) which really makes the whole image pop.
I define art style as line, color, shading, textures, and effects. Topics such as anatomy and perspective are complex and better fit for a channel focusing on character design. Not to say I won’t address them in future videos, but I want to make my videos as accessible as possible to newcomers.
one of the cleanest art style tutorials I’ve seen! this is definitely going to help me a lot once I mature enough when it comes to drawing Mario decently
This video seems very helpful. It shows how timeless and clean the 2D Mario promo art really is and we can all thank to Yoichi Kotabe and Shigehisa Nakaue (the current artist behind the illustration of Super Mario 3D World) for it.
I've often thought about making videos like this, being a bit of a style chameleon myself, but I never did get around to it, and these days I don't think I have the interest anymore. Glad somebody is taking it on! Looking forward to seeing where this channel goes. I'd be interested in seeing what insights you might have to not only rendering a character in a style, but making adjustments to character design to better fit a certain game's design paradigm, since style does encompass not only the linework, lighting, shading, etc, but also the mindset of how anatomy is handled, how elements are simplified or abstracted, etc.
We have Yoichi Kotabe to thank for the "Mario art style." He also made the 80s anime-style illustrations for the old Zelda games, and art for games like "Mole Mania."
This was an issue I ran into when I was trying to learn how to draw in Mario art styles about a year ago. The tip I often heard was “Practice figure drawing, and practice basic art fundamentals as well if you haven’t already.“ Practicing those, outside of doing these art style studies, can be very helpful. But another tip I would give is to do character studies as well. You can take a character or multiple characters from the art style you’re studying, measure out their proportions (how many heads tall is the character, how long are their arms and legs compared to the rest of their body, etc), get reference photos of poses (of IRL people mostly), and then try to depict the characters doing those poses with what you now know about their proportions. This can be challenging, but with practice in figure drawing, it can get easier. This is what has helped me so far anyways.
Personally, I'd say I'm a pretty good artist, but I struggle with anatomy and drawing backgrounds sometimes. Anatomy is definitely the hardest to master, even I am still practicing! I usually base my art off pre-existing Mario poses, once I learn anatomy I will be a super artist!
Wow, this video's genuinely really helpful and concise. I've always wondered how you did this stuff since I followed you all the way back when you did those old art pieces for every Smash Ultimate fighter. Great video!
Thanks for this video! I really enjoyed your Smash redesigns, and it’s nice having you go into how these artstyles actually tick. As for art styles to consider for next time: you seemed to have a lot of fun drawing video game characters in their “classic” cartoon styles (the DiC series in particular). Maybe that’s a place to start?
Doc, as someone who has been a long time fan of your artwork, following you on Twitter and everything. I really appreciate you make this videos for other future artist a lot.
The Dream Team artstyle, while basically being the same as the other M&L games, is still complicated enough with it's shading that I think it deserves either it's own video or section in the next video. Great video, by the way! I'm trying to learn how to draw these styles myself, so it's great seeing you explain these in such a clean and understandable way! I'm excited to see what the future has to hold for this series.
@@SMCwasTaken purely based on that question I'm going to assume you made this yourself. In that case, it could probably benefit from more consistent lineart, an example being the really wide lineart for the head. The lineart in the original style isn't really that thick and I think such being the case here is somewhat out of place. I think you did really well with the full thing though! The shading especially is really on point I think. Is there any link or something you can share where I can see the full image?
even if it’s super hard for me to replicate the art styles i still love this explanation of mario’s different art styles, it shows you what and what you shouldn’t do when drawing it
been working on a Mario Strikers-style drawing for a while now and just found this while looking up other people's takes on the style. this is a reaallly good video, and the notes for the shading/highlights really helped break things down. love the premise of this channel and i'm lookin forward to more, thank you for putting this together!
I've been studying Mario art for a long time, and it's always super cool to see your stuff on Twitter, and also see you improve over time! I'm pretty familiar with how the main style and M&L style is achieved, buy I've never looked into Strikers' style, so I'm gonna have to mess around with that using your tips 👀 Also, the moving power-up tile background is the exact same idea I recently created for a video I'm releasing soon?? Such an interesting coincidence. I'll try to do a tad more to make mine more different, haha 😅
Oh, one suggestion I'd make for future videos! I think you could tell people to make sure to look at, and study official artwork themselves! Your video is an amazing starting point with guidelines, but it's always important to look at the official art for references.
I want to be like you when I eventually get further into my art journey. Being able to mimic and explore a variety of styles is the coolest skill to me.
Fantastic video! It's always fun to find new channels who are blowing it out of the water right off the bat, and I can't wait to see more! This may be a big departure from the styles shown in this video, but I'd love to see your take on the distinct art/shading style of Hades.
Never did i not know i needed something so long until i recieved it! This series is a great idea! Not a lot of people cover the Kingdom Hearts artstyle plus Tetsuya Nomura's art has changed quite a bit over the years so I think it would be really cool to dive in to.
this is a neat idea, it helps get a good understanding really quickly for certain styles i wonder about styles such as hollow knight n the sort, indie game style surely have a potential
Cool video! One art style I'd like to see in a future video is the classic Shantae promo art style by Matt Bozon, seen in Xtreme Sports GBC and Shantae GBC's promo art. I just think it's a fascinating, yet nostalgic art style, due to feeling like a blend between Disney and fake manga style. Later Shantae games went with a more generic anime-ish art style for the promo art and portraits, which is still good but not as charming.
Thanks. I’ve been low-key working on a potential Player 3 and Player 4 for a hypothetical four player platformer since 2016, so this will help me refine them even further.
Really good tutorial! I've figured my own understanding for the Mario art style but a little small details you mention are very important to keep in mind. Also the editing and writing was on point too 👍 amazing work for a first video!
This was an excellent breakdown of the intricacies of these artstyles. I've rarely tried drawing anything in an artstyle out of my own, but the strikers style looks _really_ fun to do! And all the references you give are also very good! It's a bit of an unorthodox suggestion, but an artstyle analysis on the Hotline Miami games' artsyle would be cool to see!
Great work! You replicated the essence of these styles perfectly. Just one small suggestion though; since this is a channel that breaks down art styles, you could try to mention the artists who originated them? For example: • Main 2D illustrated artwork: Yōichi Kotabe • Mario & Luigi + Mario Strikers (original character artist for both series): Masanori Sato
I love this series a lot. Especially as someone who's trying to learn how to draw in different styles. I'd also love to see Paper Mario. I know that's a lot more simplistic but seeing your take would be awesome!
I can’t believe this is your only video! This was so informative. I’d love for ya to tackle Sonic’s many art styles! There are a lot to pick from I know but I’d love to see what you’d like!
Drawing with really rough and messy lines is a lot of fun and i definitely suggest artist who struggle with perfectionism to try it out because the point of the style is that it's messy and not crazy clean and perfect.
THIS IS THE BEST ART VIDEO I'VE EVER SEEN!! As an artist myself who wants to draw in different styles, you've really inspired me to get back to drawing like I used to!! Thanks pal!! YOU'RE AWESOME!! SUBSCRIBED!! Oh and I'd LOVE to see Shantae series art styles because those are my favorite Indie games that all have amazing art styles as well!
Amazing and very detailed guide! Could you do Mega Man's art styles some time (inafune's to be specific)? Knowing how to draw like that would be like a dream come true!
I would like if you tried the artstyles of sonic! Specifically the sonic adventure, sonic cd intro and outro, and adventures of sonic the hedgehog styles.
I’m really happy with UA-cam’s algorithm. It’s recommending me a lot of unique and well put together smaller channels lately. You absolutely nailed Kotabe’s design! I loved the “character” you picked to toy around with it too!
Great work on the tutorial! Now for a request~ Can you draw the wario ware cast (plus Doc Crygor) using the regular 2D Mario art style? Thanks. Love your art, btw!
I am all for this series- I hope if he covers Sonic he does, Adventure, Toei, and IDW/Archie. (Hirokazu Yasuhara's Concept Doodles could also be a cute addition too)
Some art styles I would like to see eventually: Kirby, PvZ, Phineas and Ferb, Minecraft, Pokémon, Bloons Tower Defense, Clash style (CoC, Royale, Mini, etc), Adventure Time, and more
Haven’t evens finished the video yet, but I can already tell you I want more of this. I don’t know if you know how valuable of a resource this would be.
I adore this series so far - rendering techniques are so rarely explained in such depth with art tutorials. Like, I can look at and figure out how to emulate particular shapes and proportions, but actually getting the final result to look right in the rendering is a hassle, especially working digitally without access to true inks and watercolors and such.
This channel looks pretty cool, but I'm already subscribed to so many. I don't know if I can make room for- 0:12 ooooohhhh my gosh they care about Jellystone. Instant sub. Seriously though, this video is insanely good. As an artist, I know my style is inspired from a lot of other ones, but I could never break down what made them so appealing to me. This video didn't just put the pieces together, it did so in a way that's easy to understand(at least to me, I can get why some non-artists would feel different). If you're still looking for requests on this video, I'd love to see a video on Puyo Puyo's artsyle(Fever 1 & 2 to be specific). But I'll be interested in anything that comes next!
Amazing video dude. I would absolutely love to see you tackle the sonic artstyles, especially the rider artstyle. Instant sub, your production style is already so high
I'm currently trying my hand at these with just a few oc's of mine. I always enjoy trying to replicate other art styles as not only is it good practice, it's also just a lot of fun! Also an art style I'd love to see you tackle on of these days are the Minecraft 2d art they make for their modern day promotional material!
As a long time Mario fan I say this is extremely helpful! Also I love to see how to mimick the PaRappa the Rapper, WarioWare, Ed, Edd n Eddy and Crash Twinsanity art styles
This video is awesome and the concept is genius, it helps the beginners who are starting in art and it's interesting for non artists to see how their favorite art styles look so original Btw I personally think you should cover the Paper Mario art style as it is one of my all time favorites
I really love how to explain everything so detailed yet simple and easy to understand! ^-^ I would love to see an Dragon Ball art-styles over the ages video from you! 🤩💜
There is a artstyle that was pretty common with Nintendo DS and earlier Warioware games where it's thick lines, bold text, scrolling menu backgrounds and mostly just pastel colors. Goodgis on UA-cam does this artstyle perfectly but I would really love to see a tutorial about something similar!
This is the most helpful tutorial I’ve ever seen, I’ve always been intimidated by the strikers style and fascinated with the alphadream style but never knew how to deconstruct both styles
Duuude, this is top tier content! I love how it’s both entertaining and informative. I’m sure you heard this a lot and you knew it yourself, but as someone who also draws (and also a Sonic Fan, hehe) if you ever do Sonic art styles, the best choices that I would love to see, are: - Sonic Channel (that has multiple art styles over the years); - Sonic Adventure; - Sonic Battle; - Sonic Riders; - Sonic Chronicles;

This is such a great idea for a video series. Would love to see one on Sonic Artstyles, there are so many good ones like from the Adventure games, Sonic Riders and the japanese classic art. Maybe it could also dive into the Tyson Hesse or the archie comic styles as well lol

Wow this is a great start for a new channel
This is actually super helpful, I was wondering how I was going to go about drawing Mario for my history of games final project
Great first video. We will watch your career with great interest.
The beginning of a great channel
I’m really happy with UA-cam’s algorithm. It’s recommending me a lot of unique and well put together smaller channels lately.
You absolutely nailed Kotabe’s design! I loved the “character” you picked to toy around with it too!
Great work on the tutorial! Now for a request~ Can you draw the wario ware cast (plus Doc Crygor) using the regular 2D Mario art style? Thanks. Love your art, btw!
I used the same normal color for the reflective lights in the 2D Mario style.
I just realized that there is such a thing as a mask 💀
I am all for this series-
I hope if he covers Sonic he does, Adventure, Toei, and IDW/Archie.
I don't know if I can make room for-
0:12
ooooohhhh my gosh they care about Jellystone.
Also I love to see how to mimick the PaRappa the Rapper, WarioWare, Ed, Edd n Eddy and Crash Twinsanity art styles
perfect opurtunity to DEMAND you tackle the PERSONA art style or LEGEND OF ZELDA
You make me wanna try mario style goood job, i would love some good old bengus style if posible
This is about the 10th time this video has been recommended to me, I’ve seen it with at least 3 different thumbnails so ALRIGHT I’ll watch it.
This video is awesome and the concept is genius, it helps the beginners who are starting in art and it's interesting for non artists to see how their favorite art styles look so original
Btw I personally think you should cover the Paper Mario art style as it is one of my all time favorites
I really love how to explain everything so detailed yet simple and easy to understand! ^-^
I would love to see an Dragon Ball art-styles over the ages video from you!
A a person who can’t draw well, this is great.
This is the most helpful tutorial I’ve ever seen, I’ve always been intimidated by the strikers style and fascinated with the alphadream style but never knew how to deconstruct both styles
Duuude, this is top tier content!
I love how it’s both entertaining and informative.
I’m sure you heard this a lot and you knew it yourself, but as someone who also draws (and also a Sonic Fan, hehe) if you ever do Sonic art styles, the best choices that I would love to see, are:
- Sonic Channel (that has multiple art styles over the years);
- Sonic Adventure;
- Sonic Battle;
- Sonic Riders;
- Sonic Chronicles;
YESSS THANK YOU, I LOVE THIS FRANCHISE TO DEATH AND I WANTED TO KNOW HOW TO DRAW THE OTHER MARIO STYLES
"You're the best artist in the world!" -Ms. Valencia's class
You only have one video!? You are a fantastic artist and this video was tremendously helpful!

I needed this video, I've always wanted to draw in the mario art styles :0 (me being an artist and a big mario fan)
THANK YOU :D
cleanest art style tutorials I’ve seen!
Saw this video in my feed and thought “huh this seems like something doc shoddy would make”. And then it turns it was you! Glad to see you making tutorials on how to achieve these artstyles!
Thanks! This helped with me doing the strikers artstyle! (can we all admit it looks badass?)
I've been trying to a style that stuck with me, this is such a good video to learn about art styling thank you
This is such a great idea for a video series. Would love to see one on Sonic Artstyles, there are so many good ones like from the Adventure games, Sonic Riders and the japanese classic art. Maybe it could also dive into the Tyson Hesse or the archie comic styles as well lol
Wow you sold me on the first 20 seconds, I love the concept and presentation. Subscribed.
Thank you so much for this video!! This’ll help me so much when drawing Mario characters in the future!
