If you are one of those people who is reluctant to "waste" fabric on samples, make the samples the size of a placemat and donate the placemats to Meals on Wheels or another charity. Or you can assemble your samples into a quilt as you go quilt. This idea can help free you from fear of free motion!
I'm binge watching your videos. I just love you to pieces. Very informative and valuable to a newbie who's never ever FMQ'd but is rarin' to go. Thank you very much for sharing so much knowledge!
Hello! I just got to sit down with my hand quilting and to watch your video. I hope you have a wonderful and creative week ahead! Thank you for sharing your video and your talent.
Made them. Marked them. Quilted them. Beautiful! And so precise-ish ( you know the pivot point nudges now and then). Love this template. Made a short and long template.
Thank you! I just ordered my cutting mats and I plan to get busy. I’m of a vintage age and I’m learning from a younger quilter and I appreciate that fact!
Another great tutorial. I just love your calm voice, you make me feel like I can do it too. I have used the iron away pens for years and never have had any problems of any kind. Thank you again for your tutorials.
My second comment...LOL....I watched the video 3-4 more times, made my template, punches the holes, and got started. I made a quilt that I wanted to quilt something that I had never done before. It's very busy, lots of stars, so I started the baptist fan as you demonstrated. It's coming out good! I had no doubt in your instructions, but I was wondering if I could do it. I can do it!!! Thanks so much.
🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵 I am learning a TON about drawing out Baptist fans! I've always wanted to try them. You've shown me how to conquer little things that never even occurred to me! Thanks!! By the way, I am a hand quilter, but may try my hand at machine quilting on my charity quilts. So this is GREAT!!
see?! so helpful and useful for me!!!! Your videos are very helpful. I have a big quilt I really want to do baptist fans on but had NO idea how to do it!!!!!
I can't tell you how excited and happy I am that you did this video. Ordered my supplies. I love the Baptist fan pattern. I always send my quilts to the longerarm quilter for it. Thank you for breaking it all down. THANK YOU! 🥰🧵🪡❤️
Hi Megan, I used this free hand and it didn’t come out badly, but I love the template you made to give yourself lines to follow much better. I didn’t think to make a template for myself, but I sure am glad you thought through this process and I wasn’t aware they have a 1/8” hole punch. Thank you for sharing, 🥰 Chris
I hope you are having a good weekend! I decided to do a Baptist Fan motif in the baby quilt I just finished. You're explanation is excellent. I have a circle cutting ruler that I'm using for my template but I didn't know how they nested together. Thank you for this great description. I've marked the 1st 2 rows & I'm looking forward to quilting it! I'll try one of the variations next time.
I was JUST checking your channel out YESTERDAY to see if you'd posted a new video and I missed it 🥴😁 I'm SO GLAD to see one up today! I really like your template! Imma gonna make one! 🥰😁❤️
Hello again! Nice to see another video. Great tutorial!! I am going to attempt to make a template, and give this style of quilting a go. Thanks so much for your time!
Very good tutorial, I love the Baptist fan pattern. I hand quilted fans all over a queen size quilt years ago but used an all over pattern I made myself with template plastic. Your way of tracing the pattern is much more compact. I will do it that way in future. Thanks, I like the way you explain things.
Thank you last week I watched your video, I been scared to try free motion quilting but that all changed after seeing your video, This video is awesome too will try it on my next art quilt.
Thank you for this design. I have a home machine with a small throat and this will be great for my placemats. Just stitching over the lines of piecing is boring looking Plus I just got a free motion foot so this will be a great practice piece for me.
I learned a lot here! I'm a brand new hand quilter and I love this design but had no idea how to tackle the marking. I'm also going to check out those heat erase pens! What a great idea.
It is useful to see this on a sample. However, I always wonder how to do this over an entire quilt that you have to navigate. Is it really practical to trace over an entire quilt?
“I will do fmq, I will do fmq, I will do fmq”. This is my mantra and watching you and your great examples, which I have watched many many times I know I will do it one day. I practice on paper all the time. Still scared 😱. One of my guild friends gave me an old panel to try to get comfortable with trying. But it’s the business of prints and my not seeing good that are another deterrent. Also messing up a hard worked quilt top. Suggestion please.!!
Placemats are the best way. I also do not use my expensive fabric to practice...Walmart or Hobby Lobby and of course scrap pieces of batting. Number one rule, breathe.
Such a great solution! Very clever! Love your creativity and ingenuity. I already have some template plastic but it is on the light side. Would you advise me to pick up the thicker stuff? Thanks for the great tutorial!
Will those ink marks return when the quilt gets very cold? I marked a pattern on fabric with a ink pin something like your's. When pressing on an applique some of the ink marks disappeared. I put my project in my freezer overnight. All the ink marks were back the next morning. Could the marks return with age? That is a wonderful idea. Making and using a template to mark and sew those lines as even as possible.
I was hoping you had the template making and marking instructions written down in a PDF. I even searched your website but couldn't find anything. I will re-watch & pause the video to write down all the instructions and them type up my own copy.

I often make potholders and practice on them 🙂
Wow! What a great video! Perfection in all aspects. Thank you very much.
Thanks so much for your demonstration! Your directions were thorough and clear. Blessings to you!
You are very good

I got the clear cutting mats and 1/8 Whole punch at my local dollar tree.. not bad for 2.50 for both!
Thank you! Your instructions are great. I really appreciate this video.😊
I love the babtist fan quilting pattern but never thought I could do it with fmq! Thanks!
That’s really cool looking and easier than it looks.
Very clever idea of making and using the template. Must try it next time👍🇦🇺
I have watched so many of these on Baptist Fan and this is the first I truly understand the reputation..Thanks so much..
I should have said reputation of marking...

You are so cleaver with your ideas and clear in your tutorials! This could be a lot of fun, especially for smaller projects. Thanks!

Lordy, wish I’d seen this a year ago before spending $$$ on westlee Baptist fan templates. So smart!
Great video. I want to get into quilting my own quilts and this gave a lot of good information.

Thanks for the template idea! It's hard to find a tutorial showing how to machine stitch the Baptist fan...thanks for your great tutorial!
What a clever little template.

Didn't have that punch but I did have one that you use for making belt holes.
Great tutorial. Easy to understand 👍
Hello again! Nice to see another video. Great tutorial!! I am going to attempt to make a template, and give this style of quilting a go. Thanks so much for your time!
Thanks Sherry! Its a fun design even if it does take a while to mark :). I have the urge to hand quilt a version sometime in the future!

may just try this!
Excellent tips so thank you so much for sharing 👏👏 I might be brave enough to give it a go 👍👍🇬🇧
Very cool idea, the template & marking like that, totally cool
Great video and very helpful -I had no idea that a template would mark the fan so quickly and easily. Love my heat erase pens and will never go back!
Thanks!
Thanks Patty!! You are amazing!
Fantastic video! You are a great teacher !😊
OMGoodness!!!! so clever. the Baptist fan is my favorite quilt design; but I struggle. This technique is great
You can totally do it! Its all about finding that path around the design :)
I just ordered a ruler foot quilting template yesterday 🤦. However I really appreciate your instructions for starting and stopping. Thank you ☺️
Thank you for the great tutorial!
Thank you for a great tutorial ❤️🙏 i definitely must try this.
Love your tutorials!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you last week I watched your video, I been scared to try free motion quilting but that all changed after seeing your video, This video is awesome too will try it on my next art quilt.
You can definitely do it! Everyone starts as a super beginner at free motion quilting! One of these days I'll dig out my first quilts and share them!
I always look forward to your videos! Excellent guide on how to create Baptist fans. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 This is so doable. I’m excited to give it a try!
Very good ideas! Thanks!
Thank you for this design. I have a home machine with a small throat and this will be great for my placemats. Just stitching over the lines of piecing is boring looking Plus I just got a free motion foot so this will be a great practice piece for me.
Thank you for taking the time to show the variations. Love it.❤
Great explanation. Thank you 🙏
I love the wavy sample. This was a great tutorial. I learn so much from your videos!

I have ironed over air erasable markers. The marks can be remover with water.
Wow very interesting thx from Ontario🇨🇦

A big thank you for this idea. can't wait to try.
This template is super helpful! Thank you for the video 😊👍💕
Thanks for the hack and demonstration; I will be using it for sure!
Super cool technique with using plastic to make your own templates! I love this idea! Always impressed by your videos!
Fabulous tutorial! I love the look of the Baptist fan.
This video is great. I've been looking for a way to do the baptist fan pattern on my home machine. Going to try it soon!!! Thanks again.

Genius!
Pretty cool!! Thanks!
i love it thank you
How did you know that I want to try this, and I have a charity quilt to practice on? Thanks so much for the tutorial.
Brilliant
Awesome 🤗
Love it!

Great video, what kind of foot is that on the machine?

What kind of sewing machine did you use. Can you do it with a regular one from Walmart?
I was hoping you had the template making and marking instructions written down in a PDF. I even searched your website but couldn't find anything. I will re-watch & pause the video to write down all the instructions and them type up my own copy.
To help from losing your template maybe you could add washi tape to edge?
If you were going to use Baptist fans as an all over quilting design would you start in the middle of the quilt and work outward?
Are your feed dogs up or down?
Why are my fans getting off even more as I go along. Peaks and valleys are not lining up
I am new to quilting, but can we draw our guides on our fabric before we make a sandwich with it?
Thanks!
I always look forward to your videos! Excellent guide on how to create Baptist fans. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 This is so doable. I’m excited to give it a try!
