With the financial atmosphere you have shown the traditions of quilters making something out of what you have on hand. I picked up an unfinished quilt with a note in it, requesting to contact the person if I decided to finish the quilt. When I contacted the person was told the person who started the quilt is now in a nursing home and has forgotten most things of her life but she could still remember how to quilt. I offered to send the finished quilt to her family and she is thrilled. With all of this story I am finishing it in just the way you quilted your quilt. Quilts all have a story and a home. Thank you.
Omg! Thank you for this! I have been trying to finish up some of my late mother’s quilt tops and dealing with long arm quilters to complete them. Not only is there a financial strain doing that, there have been time conflicts as well. Waiting months for the quilting to get done is just too long!! This video has inspired me to try this new trick!! Thank you!! 😮
The quilt is absolutely gorgeous! The quilting compliments the beautiful design, and the pieced backing looks pretty. The recipient is obviously very pleased😊
I love how pragmatic you are about the whole process. I'd almost given up quilting because of how complicated some channels make it out to be, and all the 'must have' tools they show.
I feel that way too! All those specially things your made to feel like you must have before you can quilt, it kinda ruins it. I try to remember that once upon a time quilts were purposefull/utilitarian and may I add BEAUTIFUL before any of these fancy quilt things were invented, a time when quilting was nessecity not a "hobby" for more financially privileged individuals. If you want to quilt do it! You don't need all the best things money can buy. There are a lot of groups online where people love to help new sewists and who also love to get rid of fabric scraps! 😊 Also thrifting is a good way to not only help you get to quilting for the cheap but to help our environment. I have found some awesome rulers at garage sales for super cheap.
That always drove me away from sewing in general, all this equipment you need… knitting is much more straightforward but i’m giving sewing another go this year
@@namevale8835Also, my store, Walmart, (which I work at), often has awesome deals on day quarters. You can sometimes get 1 fat quarter for 50¢, or you can get a bundle of five for $1.
Call me 'not too bright' or whatever lol but this video FINALLY made me able to put my walking foot on my Bernina correctly! Literally all it took was that brief moment where you said "this is what most people do wrong" ( or something to that effect) it was EXACTLY the reason I was struggling. I'm not even going to embarrass myself by telling you how many years I've had the machine and the walking foot. At any rate , you gained a subscriber with just that one nugget of information that clicked so clearly with me , and I look forward to going back and watching all your videos. I really like your style!
I just found your channel. I am 74 and a new quilter. Everything I have learned I have learned from UA-cam. I have just made a two Jelly Roll quilts and one Baby Layer cake quilt. Your quilt was so beautiful. I use my Singer machine but I do struggle some when straight line quilting. I like the cross hatch design so much. I am going to try next quilt I do. I am trying to make lap quilts for my grandchildren. Thank you for your video. You’re a good teacher.❤️
Thank you !! I quilted for many years. Before long arms. I hand quilted and machine quilting was just becoming acceptable. But when my husband passed away many years ago, I had four children and the quilting was put aside. I focused on sewing, clothing, costumes, crafts. I finally took the leap and made a couple of quilt tops and was determined to quilt them and finish them. Lo and behold, I had forgotten how to machine Quilt on my domestic Sewing Machine. To me the first quilt was an absolute disaster and I started taking out all the quilting stitches. I could not figure out how I used to do this. I searched UA-cam, Pinterest and any other format I could find to remind me how to accomplish machine quilting. you are the first quilt tutorial that focuses on how to quilt on your domestic machine! I am so thankful to have found your video to regain the confidence of making quilts again. Thank you again for making this tutorial or I may not have ever finished these 2twin size quilts for my grandchildren. 🥰🥰🥰💕💕
Nikki is one of the very best on UA-cam. I’ve been watching her for quite a long time. Her tutorials are by far the most enjoyable and relaxing. Take time to browse all her videos, as her projects are all great and very easy to follow.
Just FYI Nikki i tried to find a walking foot for my very old Phaff 360. It was my Moms machine and i now use this since she has passed. My father purchased this machine for my mom when I was three. I am now 62.. so I really wanted to learn how to machine Quilt, but I found out that that the Phaff has this built-in technology called IDT, and it does not require a walking foot to machine quilt. this machine actually has a built-in walking foot. This is not just for your channel but for viewers watching your channel to just to let them know.
Nikki, I just found your videos. I am so thankful for your teaching and overall video style. You don’t overload with talking about your personal stuff so that we have to listen for 10 minutes before you get to teaching/showing us what we are here for. Please, not trying to be rude. You are so delightful and fresh, it’s enjoyable to watch you. Some videos, it’s all about them first and sewing second-ughhh. So thankful!! A new subscriber from Tucson, AZ. 🎉
Okay I'm sorry for the influx of seperate comments but I couldn't help myself..lol...Okay, this quilt is absolutely ADORABLE BTW.....I love it and I love your attitude toward quilting!! I have been quilting now for about 12 years and I'm still learning so so much, and I know I will continue to learn everyday on my quilting journey...but when I come across beautiful people such as your self it makes me so happy!! I too am a frugral quilter and try so hard to watch that I don't spend too much on fabric and other things I really don't need....I try to think back too all those women who started quilting over a hundred years ago and they made such beautiful works of art WITHOUT all the fancy tools they have today whic proves we don't necessarily need them right?!?! I do tend to only buy fabric when I can find it on sale, unless it's something specific that I need.....so thanks for sharing this with all of us and I look forward to following your channel.....from a fellow quilter watching from Alberta Canada 🍁
I LOVE your close-up shots!!! Some creators want you to see things that are so FAR AWAY. As a beginner, this is SO HELPFUL!!! Thank you for being clear and helping us learn well! You are awesome!!! 💖💖💖💖
Thank you so much for this tutorial Niki, it was very helpful for me to actually watch you demonstrate machine quilting at home. Surprisingly, the most helpful part for me was when you explained what the seam guide was and how to use it! When I purchased my machine, I also purchased the walking foot and there was a seam guide in the box as well, but it wasn't identified or explained in the instructions, so I had no idea what it was. In fact, you're the only one I've ever seen using it, and I'm so glad you did! And I'm so glad I didn't throw it out! 😊 By the way, your daughter's quilt is beautiful! 🎉
My machine came with the walking foot, but not that seam guide. That would have been nice to have. I mark all my lines with a frixion pen, it's tedious and annoying to draw all those lines!
I absolutely love how you explain things. As a complete beginner, you make it so easy to understand what you are talking about. I already figured out my machine's walking foot, but your explanation would have been so very nice when I was figuring it out.
I have quilted all but one of my quilts with my own sewing machine. I enjoy the process of making my quilts from start to finish. Painters tape works great to establish straight lines.
What a beauty of a quilt!! This is an heirloom your daughter is going to be so happy with. Thanks for the machine quilting tutorial. I've been making quilts for a long time and have never machine quilted a big quilt. I've either hand quilted it, (I love hand quilting), made a QAYG quilt (which I enjoy doing), or sent it to a longarm quilter. I have an older machine that doesn't have a lot of room but you make it look and sound so easy. I'll have to try it sometime.
When quilting, I use gloves with those rubber dots on them. There's also special gloves you can buy that help your hands stick to your quilt. The gloves were a game changer and hand saver.
I just want to say "bravo". I appreciate how you pieced the backing, I have done that purposefully, it looks cute! Double quilt! . Also, what is even more amazing is that you use second-hand sheets for your backing. I thought I was the only one who did that! It's so cool that you have done that, too! I prefer to use sheets that I find at thrift stores for a few reasons...#1 it's WAY CHEAPER! I do make sure, of course, the sheet is 100% cotton and in good condition. I want it to last. I don't have a lot of money, and I really want to be less wasteful, so reusing and re-purposing is an awesome practice. Isn't that the point of a quilt to begin with. A useful item is made with what you have. The quilt I just finished, I actually used an old faux quilt blanket form probably to late 70s as batting. It was tatered worn fabric that was fake patch work with batting between the fabric layers. It was a blanket I always loved and was very worn out. I filled holes with scrap batting. Then my backing was a 100% cotton sheet I got at a thrift store, I will say the sheet was that nice cotton sateen, so very smooth and I found it to be a bit of a pain, so go for more crisp cotton sheets if you can find them. Thank you for sharing your quilting experience.
Thank you!!! My queen quilt has been pin based for 5 years. Still have not bought an extension table for my machine. Going to use my walking foot and get it done.
Great video! My creative flow has sputtered for a while now, but I find your relaxed approach inspiring. The quilt is amazing. Your daughters delight was precious. Thanks.
Currently making a quilt for my kids for christmas and this video saved me so much money! I thought I would have to buy another sewing machine because the space I have is small, but folding the quilt to fit is such a simple but great idea ❤ thank you for this!!!
It's absolutely lovely! You're a true artisan and I greatly admire your skill. That will be a quilt she cherishes for the rest of her life. Nicely done!
Love the quilt and how you used left over fabric pieced together for the backing. Your quilt reminds me of my grandmother’s quilts; comfy cozy. I’m glad you have lots of ideas for sewing projects because I’ll be here waiting. lol ❤
Thank you so much for this video. l'm about to embark on a project like this and I certainly learned from you. By the way -- about your ruler. I am 82 years old now and can remember my grandfather, who was a carpenter, using such a ruler. That would have been in the 1940s. You certainly do have an antique ruler. Thanks for the "ruler memory" as well as your quilting instructions. lol
I do many of the tips you provided…but you provided so many more great ones! Thank you! Your quilt is so lovely; I know your daughter will cherish it! ❤️
3:09 The thread brand you mentioned has "gone off" a bit. I mentioned the issues I was having with a sewing instructor person in a dedicated sewing goods store, and she said a lot of people, with newer/more recent models of domestic sewing machines, were having issues with tension and shredding of that brand (a different company had taken over the brand). So I bought a different brand of thread for my totally new sewing machine, and stopped having tension and shredding of thread issues. Just FYI. Thank you for the important info re. the walking foot especially.
I am just starting to go back to quilting ....I attended a basic quilting class in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2003. The first project was a lap quilt and hand-pieced and hand quilted. Now, watching this video makea me feel confident to do machine quilting. Thank you for sharing this video.
I appreciate your tutorials SO MUCH!!!! I've sewn my whole life, but just started quilting a year ago. It has taken me a year to make 10 quilt tops for my grandchildren. I'm finally ready to sandwich and quilt them and your tutorials on both are just EXACTLY what I needed!! Ive watched so many tutorials on UA-cam, trying to learn what I need to do, but yours are by far, the best!! (Excited I can sandwich without pool noodles, haha.) And I was so nervous about machine quilting until I watched your video. I feel like I really can do it now. Thank you so very much Nikki!! And I absolutely LOVE this quilt! 😊❤
Thank you for posting! This is just the kind of un-complicated tutorial i was hoping for. I dont have a special machine but i have a lot of scrap material and wanted to try quilting them together so as to not waste them. I was even more appreciative when you shared how you pieced the back and the batting together as well. ❤️🙏 Thank you for the inspiration and helpful instructions!
Watched this, bought a walking foot, can’t wait to try it. I’ve made a dozen twin and smaller quilts using my regular foot, straight line, about 8” apart based on batting requirements. I didn’t know any better and it worked fine, but I’m anxious to get into more complicated patterns and I’m sure the walking foot will be a big help. So glad to have found your channel, you are so calm and practical. ❤
This quilt is so beautiful - your creativity shines through it! Such an informative video - I always quilt my quilts on my domestic machine, in exactly the way you do, if I'm making a quilt I want to make it all - beautiful 😍
I currently have Quilt tops ready for machine quilting, but I have trouble doing so with my sewing machine. Luckily I found your tutorial! Btw, your Quilt for your daughter is gorgeous. I’m frugal myself & always use what I have or find thrifting for the backs of my Quilts. I think sewing a unique backing gives a Quilt a personality of its own. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Peace & Blessings~
I am happy to Subscribe because I love your style of teaching. I got an extra thrill when you pulled out that old folding ruler. I have my father's, who was born in 1905. So glad to have a reason to use it! Thank 😊 you
Oh Nikki! What a great tutorial. That quilt is a stunner. I love your design, the diamond quilting, and the backing. I am a teacher by nature and I so appreciate that you are, too. I can’t believe I only found your channel a couple weeks ago. Just love your content … and you! 🌸🌼🌸
Beautiful! As a new quilter, I THOUGHT I had to do things the way premier quilting videos taught quilting- clean cuts, 100% cotton, etc. I hate wasting fabric and batting, so I started piecing my batting a year on smaller projects- placemats, baby quilts…- and found no visible differences. I’m so content now. Although, it would be nice if manufacturers took quilting sizes into account when packaging. You do beautiful common sense quilting.❤
You are my kind of quilter! It’s so reassuring to see you quilt on a home machine, because it’s techniques that I intuitively used when I faced the “horror” of actual quilting. It has put me off a bit but now I feel that I am ok doing what I do because you do it too! Subscribed ❤.
Gahhh, so many great reminders, even if someone has quilted on their domestic machine before. I have the guide but couldn’t remember how to use it, thanks for that.
Hi Nikki, So glad I happened onto your channel. I loved how simply you made video. I've been sewing since I was 6 or 7, I will not tell my age now but it starts with a 7...😊. I get simple and you made my next quilt so much easier through this video. My husband wants me to send out my quilts for quilting... I don't like the $$$ of having it done by someone else and I don't want to have to learn ONE MORE thing along the way. And then end up paying to learn how to use a long arm after paying $20,000 more or less. I'd sure you and others get my drift....😉Thanks a bunch
I love your quilt. It is beautiful. And I admire your bravery to tackle these jobs and make them work into something truly unique. Please keep sharing.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the diamond pattern! I am about to quilt my very first quilt (just waiting for my Walking foot to arrive!) I am very excited to try the diamond pattern 😊. Your videos are super easy to follow.
Your quilt is absolutely amazing. I love it. You’ve given me the inspiration I needed to take a chance and machine quilt. I appreciate the videos. Thank you.
I inherited one of those rulers from my grandmother, but I don't think I would have thought to use it for that. I usually just go from corner to corner on my blocks, or 1/4" in on my seam lines. I can vouch for quilting it on a machine without anything special. I do wish I had known about the walking foot a long time ago, and never knew what that seam guide piece was, either!
Your quilt is absolutely beautiful, front and back. I really love the pattern/design and I find that this takes the time to work out if you create it yourself. I've found some lovely ideas to reproduce from your quilt and your tutorial is excellent. Thank you xx
Thank you! For the life of me, I couldn't conceptualize how to quilt on the machine and deal with the extra fabric of the entire quilt, so I haven't done anything with it. I've had the machine a couple of years now too. And yes, as someone else commented, no one ever has explained the guide bar thingy. I want to go sew now! Thanks again!
I enjoy the simplicity of your quilting style. I too do my own quilting on my machine, I like using different fabrics for backing it makes for an interesting back..sometimes I prefer it to the front ;)
Nikki, that is a beautiful quilt, and it looks like your daughter is delighted with it. ❤. Your videos have helped me to lighten up and ENJOY quilting again! (I Franken-batt frequently..) Congratulations on 100k! Looking forward to more seeing/quilting adventures with you!
Gorgeous. New to the channel. Your tutorial gave me a few tips I didn't know. Given inflation, I'm using stash and sheets. Found i can get a set of flannel king size sheets for $20 at a discount store. Enough for 2 quilrs backs plus pillow cases for other projects. Thank you for this 😊
This is just great! Thank you so much for this tutorial - I’m just about ready to quilt my first quilt. You have helped me so much, thank God for sewest like you. (Greensboro, NC)
I appreciate big brick backs more. Piecing the backs are my favorite. Often my quilts will be Christmas on the back so all I have to do is flip quilts that are draped around the house, AND I'M DECORATED 😭.
Nikki you are awesome! Luv all you do!! I was looking for cow fabric at Joanns so I could put “ one in the road’ if I ever make a wonky house quilt😁 but first downloaded the “Birds of a Feather” instructions and had to pick up some solid colored fat quarters!! Sooo loved ur quilt on the couch in your living room!! And after watching this video I’m thinking I’ll be able to machine quilt it YAY!! Luv u girl mucho!! 💕
What a beautiful quilt! I love the pastel colors and the design is really nice, even the backing! The one thing you didn't mention is the set-up of the machine for a quilting stitch (stitch length). I know some of the fancy newer machines have an actual "hand quilting" stitch to mimic old fashioned quilting, but most people don't have that option.
Beautiful quilt. You have inspired me to try and finish some of my own quilt tops. Thank you! Your calm ( and humorous) dialog make the tutorials so fun to watch.
I have quilted all my quilts, and they are many, on my domestic smaller Janome4800. I don't roll my quilts as you do. I "puddle" them and work in quarters. I usually free motion them and this way i never have to worry about more than the 1/4 of the quilt I am working on. I start in the center and do the right lower quarter. When done that I turn it and do the next right lower quarter. I work all the way around my quilt in this fashion. With the quilt puddled on my machine it is not hard to move. I too piece a lot of my backing and batting. Quilting should not be expensive and just for the elite.
Just watched this video and you are already my favourite quilter/teacher. You explain the basics, warn what could possibly go wrong, and have a great sense of humour. I love the quilt you were using to show how to machine quilt and that is the kind I would like to make. Is there a video on that style? I just subscribed so I have a lot of your videos to go through, and will enjoy every minute. I am 80 and although I have been sewing for almost 70 years, I have never quilted. Time to start! :)
Aw thank you and welcome! I did not create a pattern for this quilt, but I did make a few videos to share the process. They’re all on my quilting playlist :)

Na costura doméstica.
Just something I learned that makes rolling your quilt easier is use a dollar store pool noodle to roll up the sides of your quilt 😉
Oh smart! I was taught to roll it around a wrapping paper tube! (With the paper still attached if necessary 😂)
I personally prefer straight line quilting to the more decorative designs. Knowing that I can possibly do that myself makes me very happy.
I love how pragmatic you are about the whole process. I'd almost given up quilting because of how complicated some channels make it out to be, and all the 'must have' tools they show.

The quilt is wonderful! Front and back 😊. I feel much more confident in machine quilting. Thank you.
I quilt all my quilts on my machine. Biggest one was king size, and that one took a few weeks.

Your quilt is gorgeous.
It's absolutely lovely! You're a true artisan and I greatly admire your skill. That will be a quilt she cherishes for the rest of her life. Nicely done!
You make quilting look so easy. Both your quilts are beauties. ❤
Absolutely beautiful quilt. Love the colours and design. Love the binding. Love your machine quilting tips. Thank you so much for sharing!!
I never knew what that contraption was (quilting guide) for my walking foot!! Loved this tutorial!! Thank you so MUCH! Nikki
Such a great quilt! I love the diamond shape.
Thank you, Nikki! Your videos are always entertaining and educational - I get so much out of every one! Love your humor and sensibility!❤
Love the quilt and how you used left over fabric pieced together for the backing. Your quilt reminds me of my grandmother’s quilts; comfy cozy. I’m glad you have lots of ideas for sewing projects because I’ll be here waiting. lol
❤
Beautiful!! Based on your clock on the shelf, time stands still while you quilt :)
😂 It needs a battery
Beautiful quilt for a beautiful daughter! I love how time stands still in your sewing room when you're doing what you love!!
So many tips here! I have done a half dozen quilts and I learned a dozen new things. Thank you. 🙏
Yes, you can do it! 😁
Infinalky broke down and bought a walking food. I love it!!
I seldom sew without my walking foot.
❤ TFS, I did a baby blanket this way, but without the walking foot. I need to get one of those. It looks simple enough, thanks to you.
I have a mattress manufacturer in the family, they used to get 1000 count thread, and I saved several. Great idea, I have king size!!
Wow very pretty!!!! Love the attitude that quilting need not to be expensive!!!!
If you put the quilt back on the bed with the backing facing up we can see the design better. Great job. Thank you very much for sharing.
I love the practicalities of you videos. Thankyou.
As usual, a wonderful work of art! I use quilting gloves when I quilt on my domestic machine. It makes it so much less exhausting.
Yes! I always use those when free motioning especially
I’ve always started in the middle. It’s nice to see that it doesn’t matter! I love how you do whatever you want. I just need to take that leap!
Absolutely love this quilt! Great job teaching us how. Thank you.
Brilliant - love this quilt, and making use of what you have, exactly what quilting is all about. Totally agree re walking foot, it's a game changer.
You are amazing and so is your quilting talent, thanks for sharing!!
Gorgeous quilt
You are so incredibly inspiring!!!
Your quilt is absolutely amazing. I love it. You’ve given me the inspiration I needed to take a chance and machine quilt. I appreciate the videos. Thank you.
The quilt turned out so lovely!
Stunning❤❤❤i am subscribing immediately cause you are the best teacher ever
Really pretty! Me too… sheets from thrift store!… and pieced backing! Love this quilt.. love your videos!❤
I just love 😍 all your quilts!!! It’s just works of art! Beautiful!
Your quilt is absolutely beautiful, front and back. I really love the pattern/design and I find that this takes the time to work out if you create it yourself. I've found some lovely ideas to reproduce from your quilt and your tutorial is excellent. Thank you xx
What an awesome, happy quilt! You really break down the steps and make them easier. thank you so much
I love your teaching style. You make it seem possible for us that are new to sewing. Thank you.
Looks wonderful!! ❤
Gorgeous. New to the channel. Your tutorial gave me a few tips I didn't know.
Given inflation, I'm using stash and sheets. Found i can get a set of flannel king size sheets for $20 at a discount store. Enough for 2 quilrs backs plus pillow cases for other projects.
Thank you for this 😊
So pretty. Thanks!
This is just great! Thank you so much for this tutorial - I’m just about ready to quilt my first quilt. You have helped me so much, thank God for sewest like you. (Greensboro, NC)
Your quilt is really lovely. I also appreciate your advice for quilting with home sewing machines.
Yey! Thanks for showing us the tool to measure the quilting lines! Huge time saver 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Lovely quilt. Thank you for the tutorial.
The quilt is beautiful!
What a fun whimsical quilt!
THIS is what I have been looking for! My thanks to you for explaining and showing how to machine quilt. Now I have a reference and a guide! Finally 😊
Beautiful quilt!
