Man, if only Apple still made this display, updated with Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 ports, it would be perfect
They made, but cost five thousand.
@@edimarjunior572 that's not a normal monitor, no one will buy that to use alongside the mac mini, 27 5k same as the iMac would be nice.
@@sefeiba7477 my mother has it paired with a Mac mini m1 chip. Looks and works amazing
@@edimarjunior572 true.
@@TheTiredPirate Great idea. That was my plan to but I got to the store and went for an M1 laptop to keep the same workflow as I had with the MBPro from 2015. The MacMini was the best bang for buck out of the 3 M1 computers. Great choice.
I never felt calm like this for any review ^^
I know two guys who are either graphic designers or professional video and content editors, and they both still use this display for their work. I picked mine up for £90 ($120) and it's still a flawless performer.
Great review by the way. Keep up the good work!
Very cool!
Thank you for making this video! I just bought a 27” Thunderbolt display for $160 for work and it was well worth it!
Reason #6 - they are (relatively) cheap to fix. I found one next to a dumpster that had a cracked screen. I plugged it in and saw it worked fine. Bought a new glass front off eBay for $60. Stuck a suction cup on the front - glass pulls way from the magnets holding it on. Plopped on the new glass and it's good as new!
what?! that's amazing bro
But you gotta be careful.
I just bought one for $200. waiting for it to ship. so fun watching you confirm my choice. I'm shocked no one ever recommended I get this classy "hub".
Nice! I purchased my Thunderbolt display when they came out as a reconditioned product. I still use it in my home office. The picture is much better than my new Samsung.
I bought one for working at home and I love it
I still use the 24inch cinema display and love it so much!
I enjoyed that way more than I should have 😂
Super laid back vibe. I’m working from home for the foreseeable future and I’m a UX/UI designer so I went ahead and got a IMac 🖥 desktop. It has a 5k retina screen that looks better than my TV. It also has a 1080p front facing camera for all those Zoom meetings. It’s perfect for design work and doesn’t run as hot as my wife’s MacBook 💻 pro. (More powerful too.
love how the video is straight to the point, thank you for this video. Your voice is so calming.
I just picked one up today for $150. A clean one!! I’m excited !!!
Great video. I'm still using a couple of Thunderbolt displays that I bought with my 2013 MacBook Pro. I've thought about upgrading to single, larger display (32"), but when I looked at what's available these days, nothing seems an adequate replacement. Even after 8 years they're still beautiful and fully functioning (though I do wish I could convert them to Thunderbolt 3).
I've always wanted one of these displays. It didn't matter what the resolution was and if it didn't have 4k. I just needed more screen space for my old macbook air. Found myself a used model for the same cost as the brand new monitors and it was the best investment I've made.
great video - and yes, I agree absolutely. I’ve got one of these 27” Thunderbolt displays - I got it in late 2011 to go with my first MacBook (a 2011). At the time I thought it cost a fortune, but it has proved to be money well spent. It’s been used almost every day in my home office, and it still works great. Fantastic display, and meets my needs really well. If I see another I might just move to a dual display setup!
Luckily, I have two of these, that still work and I'm going to hook up an M1 chipped Mac mini soon.
I have one of these and it's currently hooked up to my M1 MacBook Pro. It works perfectly!
@@niklasquitzau9272 hi. Any adapter required to connect the m1 Mac mini to this 27” apple thunderbolt?
That’s exactly what I’m doing. I’m buying the Mac Mini and the iPad M1 pro to add to my setup! 💯
@@fadhilrosuki4905 you just need the Apple Thunderbolt to usb c adapter and your good to go! Don’t buy a third party one! Buy the official Apple adapter. Work flawlessly.
@@grafikwork3808 cool thanks, mate. u r the best
Absolutely great video and I am watching this with my Apple Thunderbolt Display.
Thanks i couldnt agree more. Im a photographer and thIs is A very helpful video. Except how does it turn on. i see the power button on the side but i cannot get the monitor to display anything?
dig yer style there Johnny. Good job. I got one for my wife's telemedicine visits. the camera works great and lets her look at both the person she's talkin to and work on ... stuff.
I have two Thunderbolt Displays connected to a 2015 MacBook Pro. It is a perfect setup for me!
Just realized I've had one sitting in my garage for two years now that would be perfect for my setup lol. Nicer than most of the ~$300 displays I was looking at too!
Great review! I just got one today from a local seller and I couldn't be happier! Goes great with my 2015 rMBP.
Sweet - that is a great pairing for sure! Enjoy.
Great video Johnny! I have T-Bolt Displays in two different locations and cannot stand the thought of ever having to switch to something else! I do have a question....does anybody know a way to get a USB 3.0 port from the display? I’m connecting a video component that requires USB 3.0.
I totally agree. I bought my first one as a refurb when they first came out and still use it daily. Just bought a second used/like new cheap on Facebook Marketplace and use it daily also in my dual thunderbolt display Macpro 6,1 setup.
bought one last week, 2022, changed the Thunderbolt cable that was broken and it is smooth and shines like brand new! What a fantastic screen, Love it!
Thank you! I watched your video last week and I started searching for a TBD and finally bought one yesterday, Im enjoying!
just found your channel! love it brother!
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks man! I'm gonna buy absolutely
Awesome! I hope you find a great price in your local area! I just saw one basically new in box in my area for around $200.
I got it for my work monitor ($300) with my personal iMac next to it and it rocks. Thanks for this video.
Dude, I think your vibes are cooler than a polar bear’s toenails. The best to you and everything you love.
Re using stuff that’s the best answer to getting on I think I’m gonna go out and get one tomorrow! Thanks 4 A very entertaining and informative video!
using a 24" LED Display, got it brand new for 200. such a nice display
Hey, I got the monitor and can’t wait to start using it.
Awesome! Let me know how you're liking it!
I think what’s interesting about the Thunderbolt Display is just how usable and useful a 2K resolution still is even today.
Like, 4K is great, and I currently have my M1 mini hooked up to a 4K display, but 4K resolution is SO high that I always have to scale the UI down to 2K anyway just to make anything readable. So I sort of feel like I may as well just have a couple of 2K monitors instead.
Currently trying to find a couple of good-condition Thunderbolt Displays to fill that role. I’d rather spend $400-$600 on two really great 2K displays from 2011 than spend $600-$800 on two really meh 2K displays from 2021.
Great review. Appreciate the laid back and funny delivery of this review. You’re right about this monitor and give great reasons to own one today! Planing to purchase one very soon to go with my 2017 iMac. Enjoy the coffee.
sweet! I hope you find one at a great price!
Hi, I’m enjoying this monitor a lot! Thanks again.
Very simply you nailed it! Also enjoy your tempo and delivery. Thanks!
Thank you!
Excellent recap of your reasons. I own the Apple 27-inch Cinema (none thunderbolt) display with mostly the same specifications and love it. Have it paired with my 2010, mac mini (the last model with a built-in DVD super-drive).
Am tempted to get a couple of them
I was finally able to snag a decently-used 27” and it arrived today. I’m pairing it with my 27” iMac, but will eventually make the Cinema my primary when I upgrade to a Apple Silicon Mac. 👍
Thank you! I was so fortunate to find an “in the box” never used owned by an older gentleman in our neighborhood and he would only take $200.00 for it. What a generous man and I am so lucky. I love this monitor!!,,
Bought a used 27” Thunderbolt Display off FB on the merit of your review £200 and it’s pristine. Best money Iv spend on tech ever.
Thanks to your comment, I managed to get a boxed one off FB Marketplace for £200 too. I had tried an expensive Eizo monitor, then returned it as it seemed no different from my Dell U2715h. This thunderbolt is like a large Macbook Pro retina display reading text on it is a pleasure! I'm surprised at how much better it is than my Dell and the Eizo monitor I returned. I love it!
a very good review..thanks.what do you think of the 24 inch thunderbolt display?im planning to buy for my photo editing..thanks
Yeaaaheaay. Your video helped me find a power adapter from my thunderbolt display to my new mac. Awesome. Thanks.
Any chance u can let me know which you bought? I’m trying to find one myself thanks!!
So, I just bought a Thunderbolt Display for my setup at home. I’ll admit, I’m a little superficial and I just like the way Apple iMacs and Thunderbolt displays look. Anyways I started watching whatever videos I could find on the display and found your video. I’ll say this…. I’ve seen many many review videos and most are by guys that guys that think they should be doing these videos… but shouldn’t be. You’ve got a very good presence infront of the camera. I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Great job! This is a great video.
Thank you man, you're cool the way you are!
I purchased this refurbished display and am totally in love!
I was wondering one thing: can I also connect an ipad (with usb-C) with the adapter?
Would it work?
I love my 2 27” LED Cinema Apple Display
thank you for the video. i recently got two 2011 apple 27 inch displays and noticed they are not as bright as my 2018 MacBook pro and Elitebook. any ideas why this would be the case/fix? it's pretty distracting while working. I've turned the brightness all the way up.
@Johnny McClung
THANKS!
I opened mine last month for the first time. It is still better than most PC monitors on the market in terms of color and resolution. .
And I did back in 2020. I had the same thought but Watching this video just confirmed it for me. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the video, I am really considering buying one to work with my MBP M1 13", can I ask if I can use magic mouse and keyboard with this display (bluetooth)? Cheers
Great video, is there a way to hook up the new 2021 iPad Pro using all the ports on the back and being able to charge the iPad
Great video! I'm glad that I kept mine.
Hi do you get a lot of fan noise with the thunderbolt screen is plugged into the MacBook ...I have purchased a screen and plugged it in but the fan now seems to be on all the time....just wondered if you get a lot of fan noise or if you have a workaround ...thanks
Great review, I have a 5k iMac but wanted a display to go with my 2018 MBP and picked one up today, prices here in the uk are much higher running at £400-£600....but for the quality of the build it’s still worth it.
you can get them reasonably cheap if youre lucky! I somehow have 4 of them...
Very cool guy! I like the laid back style..comfortable and satisfying to watch :) ..and I like the small jokes all through the video haha
I just recently hooked up my 27 inch Thunderbolt monitors to my Mac studio. Worked great for a day. Now they are cutting out or turning off. Even just updated. But I love the look of these monitors. They just match the look. Had more issues with my older 4k monitors from dell not wanting to turn on or even send a signal to wake sometimes. Have you ran into this issue with your thunderbolt or cinema display ye on the Studio?
I bought one back in 2012 for digital arts I still use it.
When he says there’s just something about apple products, they make you feel a certain way. Absolutely true. I got my first ever MacBook Air M1 a month ago, then air pods, then Apple Watch SE and iPhone 13 Pro a month later lol. When I got my MacBook Air I didn’t want to see what games could run on it, I wanted to see what can I learn with this thing. I immediately started learning Excel, SQL and after SQL I’ll move on to Power Bi (will use Windows for that) and Python. Never once did I think about playing games on the laptop, it made me want to learn and utilize every bit of it. Was thinking about learning to code for iOS apps down the road too. Nice video 👍🏽
I still ise the 23 inch version, since most things seldom hits the roof of usb 2 or even 1 at max use i dont need the usb 3. I have had usb 3 for many years in the comp but i dont use other than ethernet drives and thats only for backups so the old still work well
I bought 2! The aesthetics was the main drive for me. All of what you said are the reasons I bought them. Nothing comes close! Will see if Apple make a more affordable 27” XDR display soon. Fingers crossed. Great review.
I guess I should keep mine! Hope it works with Macbook Pro M1 Max? Can I calibrate it so it works well for photo editing for prints? Do you do photo editing on this monitor? Great video.
Just picked one up for $75. The main Thunderbolt cable was not working so I put a T/B 2 cable into the spare T/B port near the Ethernet port and T/B 3 Adapter onto the T/B 2 cable into my Mac Mini M2 and it works perfectly. Put the old cables away around back. Wow what a screen. Awesome.
Hi, I have a question I recently git an i mac A1407 which have the thunderbolt connection I tried multiple adapters to hooked to my dell PC but no luck and when I asked my brother he said he has the P400 and gave it to me I tried connecting the i mac directly to the thunderbolt but didn't work so I tried the thunderbolt to DVI converter with a different screen and that one worked just fine, my question is a special driver for it to make it work with the i mac A 1407 or I am out of luck. Thanks,
I still have both my Thunderbolt Display and my Cinema Display. Love them both.
Great review. I have one of these, plus the 27" Cinema Display that preceded it. Also have a couple of the old 30" Cinema displays. All work great!! My daily drive is an LG 32" 4K but I love these old Apple displays. I doubt it will last as long as these old Apple displays.
Would be nice to know the adapters you used, thanks. The one linked is no longer available, and I'm guessing the other is thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)?
my late iMac 2013 display is damaged and doesn't increase brightness, and has blue lines (damage). I'm thinking about purchasing this monitor instead of fixing mine. I'm actually a backup HP monitor now anyway. but the color/contrast accuracy is not the same as a mac. i wonder if it will work fine, having two 27inces side by side
I own two of them with my MBP 16” 🥰🥰🥰
What Hub will work with my M1 Macbook Pro and my 27" Display when I want to also connect another TB 2 device? I know we have those back TB ports on the display but I'm not sure that's a good route for an external audio device like a circa 2014 UAD Apollo Twin external audio interface. Your thoughts?
Hi there
I am thinking to get one and wondering if would be suitable for photography and video editing?
Thanks in advance
I got two of these for free from someone who was going to throw them out and I genuinely feel bad for him. These are amazing. Btw reason 6, you can daisy chain them!
I’ll take one off your hand so I can pair it with my 2015 5k iMac
Great video, i've just seen one on my local marketplace for a couple of hundred UK pounds in excellent condition so it's a no brainer for me and my 15" mid 2015 MacBook pro. I had considered some of the newer IPS screens out there but you were right with the "plasticky" description...they just feel a bit, like, you could breathe on them and they would fall part. As another commenter below says, if they did this model but with USB 3.1...
I have just purchased one on ebay for a few hundred pounds in excellent condition ... and like you i have a 2015mpb .... work beautifully together ..This monitor rocks
I need this one for my 16” macbook pro 2020
Have Cinema Display 30” for my MacPro 5.1.
Great monitors :)
Great video too:)
Hi Johnny, i have a mid 2010 27” iMac with a broken grafx card. I think that iMac is using the same display as the ThunderboltDisplay.
Would you recommend to use my iMac as a standalone display?
Want to connect Macbook Air 2020 M1 to iMac 21.5'' mid 2011. What's the cable combination I need for it? Thanks!
Dude!!! RIGHT ON!
Hey this was a great video. I love my Thunderbolt Display. I’m thinking of buying an M1 Mac mini to hook up to it.
Hi, I have this Thunderbolt Display but now I have a Microsoft surface pro - is there any adapter that can connect the two
Just found one of these at work... Im not an Apple product guy since its too much money for something that is so limited in use, but i'll give it a shot when I get home.
How can I hook up 2 of these to my 2020 13" MPB with the M1?
Is it mandatory to get the Magsafe cable to have the monitor working or is it just for convenience ?
I mean if I just have the power cable am I ok ?
I got one from the old tech “trash pile” at work a couple years ago. It doesn’t work and believe needs a new internal power unit. Was hesitant to buy a new power supply for $150 and it may not 100% fix it. May still pick up one on Amazon since a seller still has the power supply.
Hi, I have it and like so much but how i can connect it to apple tv box another android? thanks
Hello, is there a way of connecting the thunderbolt display to an hdmi port?
Mine developed weird burned like stains at the bottom left and right corner. Cleaned the glas inside out, cleaned the LCD ... stains stay ;/ did some forum reading and turns out this is a wide spread problem.
All of the reasons you stated are the EXACT reasons why I'm going to return my new plasticy, wobbly, washed out Samsung Ultra-wide monitor and get one of these. Great video, dude!
What model you got?
@@keepscrolling6042 - I had a Samsung LS34J550 Quad HD 34". Then I bought a Thunderbolt Display and returned the Samsung. I do not miss it 😁
Can anyone figure out if you can connect an original thunderbolt 1 display model mc914ll/b to a pc with www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/PRIME-Z390-P/ motherboard?? Is there an adapter for this?
Can I connect my apple ipad to this monitor?
I also own a MBP 16 inch and bought a 27 inch Thunderbolt display. How is your experience with the Elecjet Magsafe to USB C converter?
What do I need to connect my iMac mini 2012 for this??
How would you rank this compared to the 30" cinema? I'm considering getting one of the two...but which....
I'd love to pair that display with my iMac, cause I need a second screen for audio editing and hooking ps4. Do you know if you can hook it?
I have the same Thunderbolt display. I love it. I have been researching to see if I can connect an Ipad 2018 (not Ipad Pro) to this display. Any tips is appreciated.
if it has a lightning connection, then chances might not be good
I couldn't skip a damn sec from your video man, brilliant
I’ve been in the Apple ecosystem since the very first iPhone and iMac .. I JUST picked this up! I got it for a song of a price. Per usual, this mac girl absolutely loves it. ( graphic design/ video editing ). I am however, having a slight issue with it going to black screen. I’m waiting for an original power cord cable to arrive. I also am going to try connecting through that extra Thunderbolt port. If it still has issues, I’ll attempt to update the firmware. Did you update your firmware ? My set up is yours ( MacBook Pro 2019 powering it .) I love this video . So calming , soothing and spot on in your description (s). Nice to hear from someone else who respects the beauty and build quality of these tremendous machines. They are the Porsche’s of the tech world in my opinion. Btw.. my display looks brand new and I got it for $120.00!! 🤯😍
I’m about to get an iMac and my dad gave me this do you know if it will work with it ?
It's like buying a used mercedes vs a new toyota
I just bought this display today for $300. Found on Facebook Marketplace, researched, found your video and that sealed the deal for me. It's a great display. Thank you for making this video! :)
