Thank you for the post. I believe that cross referencing helps us to really study the Bible, and not just read it like a novel. It's humbling to know that we are able to study better because someone before us has already done the hard work.
Thank you so much for doing this video. I bought a Bible last week with a cross reference and had no idea how to use it or really what it was. Now I’m excited to use it to learn more while reading the Bible. 😊
Thank you for this video and helpful information! For the longest time I was so confused on what cross references were lol. I love how it reminds us everything in God’s Word is connected and not random and separate
I just got done watching a video at Bible Buying Guide about the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, a master set of cross-references. It primed me to watch your video.
Hi, i had bought a chain reference bible and was surprise i did not notice it. Was thinking that it was the same with the cross reference bible. Usually it is almost the same, only it has a different approach of how to study. I just want to ask, if you can give some insight about the chain vs with cross reference bible? Thank you in advance and God Bless.
Hi @dds425, the Thompson Chain Reference works a little different than standard cross-references. Rather than linking to different verses that connect to the current verse, it links to a topic which links to other verses on the same topic. Basically, if you are reading and want to know what else does the Bible say on this topic? Then the chain reference Bible is perfect for that.
Why do so many cross references refer to other scriptures that appear to have no association or connection whatsoever? I've found this so often that I gave up bothering to look.
Are the cross ref in ESV crossway reference, and NKJV Thomas nelson ref bibles same? are they excess sometimes as the crossway Ref bible says 80K cross references? Do you think ESV references are biased in favour of reformed theology, faith alone? should we be concerned? Thanks
They are different but I'm sure there will be a good bit of overlap. My experience is that I've never found myself thinking there were too many cross-references. The beauty of cross-reference is they just send you to other Bible passages, and you can read those passages in context, eliminating most concern for bias creeping in.
What about , does it cross reference giving similar scriptures meaning with others, where it's not someone quiting a past scripture, not one Gospel referencing another Gospel, and not merely referencing a single word? Is what you shared the only way it references? Or does it also in general, cross reference scripture concepts with others?
Sorry if I didn't make it clear, but yes cross references can definitely reference concepts. It will depend on what Bible you are using, but in general it will reference something that the editors believe connects will with another scripture.
1 - why isn't cross-reference default option on in bible gateway!??!?!?! what a waste. i went to bible gateway all this time without knowing this. when i read physical bibles before i never knew was such a thing. and it's not like the anointing of jesus thing because there's no trade-off. 2 - why aren't cross-references symmetric? 3 - how do i get cross-references of every edition in 1 compilation? i'll probably have to go to stack overflow for this but well maybe you know Gasai something? hehehe
Don't let yourself get too worried! The point of the Bible is to help us get closer to the Lord and understand what He's done, who He is, and who we are as His children. It's not something to stress yourself out about, but to enjoy as you learn about your heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus, and spend time with them in their written word.
If you have the ability to get it, there's a book called "A Light Unto My Path" by Dr. Jim Denison that goes into things like the history of the Bible, but also a bit about the subject and point of the Bible. It's a guide on how to study the Bible, so it also gives you tips and advice on how to do so so that you can better understand God's word.

Thankyou! This has helped me study Romans so much better. ❤
Thank you Pastor Josh.
Are the cross-references based on the word in the original language, or in the translated language?

Do you have a paid version of Bible Gateway for the Cross References? Or maybe I need to create an account?
*All reference books were magically changed to match the magical changes in the KJV.*
💯👍🏻
Very nice

I have the Westminster and it references concepts, paralel passages and so on. The Thompson chain-reference Bible do the same thing. God bless.

Cross references prove the bible is a human construct, one can do the same thing with The Game of Thrones series.
I still don’t get it. 🫣 I give up trying to read the Bible
