Growing up in southern Oklahoma in the 1940s and 50s with no electricity, no phone, and limited access to town, there were 3 essentials to grow. White willow for aspirin for aches and pains, aloe for burns and rashes, and mint for breath and digestive issues and no need for prep just use natural.
@@jessicacanfield5408 When I was out in the field, I would peel the bark and just scrape the inside with me teeth. Then drink plenty of water. Sometimes I would scrape it into my canteen. I never heated it.

I can't overstate how much I love making my own salves! Like you I love knowing what I'm using. Another salve version you might be interested in uses beef tallow instead of bee's wax. It isn't shelf stable for long at all, but is well worth the trouble for the recipes I use it for. I make small batches, I keep a tablespoon of so out so it's soft and the rest needs to be kept in the fridge at least or the freezer would be even better. The advantage of this salve is the tallow is much more like our own fat and absorbs into the skin much better, taking the medicine in with it.. Bee's wax coats and protects holding the medicine ingredients on. As a rough heel or cracked hand softener, it is unequaled by anything I have used in nearly 70 years. It is simply made. Melt the tallow and add in the oils of your choice, be they infused or essential oils. If it cools off too hard, warm it up and add in a bit of grape seed oil to soften it up; grape seed oil is absorbed quickly, too.
@@peggypastime1278 Yes, lard would work bit it will be greasier feeling. It would never set up and get as hard. You'd still need to keep most of it in the fridge

I have had shingles 3 times and get rid of them in a few days with oil of oregano capsules, you can buy in the health food section of many stores. Take with food so you don't upset your stomach. I took one 3 times a day till I saw improvement then 2 a day till gone, also lots of vitamin C. That's what helps me but some people are more or less sensitive to things so if you tend to react to stuff you might start with only twice a day? (I'm not a doctor so... That's just what works for me.)
They're crazy easy, have been using for years. Please remember that arnica works as a blood thinner to improve flow, which is how it reduces bruising. As a result, you shouldn't use it on fresh (still forming) bruises. It can worsen it. Don't use it if you take blood thinners already because it can increase the effect. Don't use it extensively if you're pregnant. Make sure it's on your list of medications if you go to the hospital. They need to account for it when prescribing.
@@mistybenefield5796 I’m glad I read the comments!! I have thrombocytopenia and sure don’t want to be using something that thins the blood! Do you know what else could be used for sore achy muscles then besides arnica? Thank you!
Thank you for your videos. I've used a lot of your recipes and techniques and find them very good and helpful.. I used to have the same problem with wax solidifying on the measuring cup as I was pouring. I found heating the oils and wax in the measuring cup on a cookie sheet in a 170F oven solved the problem as the cup is warm as well even after allowing to cool a little for the cool down ingredients.
I far prefer calendula to arnica. Arnica is great for strains when you keep using the nuscle. Calendula is a marvelous mild topical pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer and anti-infective. Rosemary can often be used as well. Calendula ointments and salves in my experience is great for arthritic aches and pains, as well as muscle tightness and guarding. It is also great for neck muscle tension. Ginger is even better for that. One caution. If you use calendula on a sunburn that has begun to peel, just like cortizone, it can stop the peel and heal the skin in mid peel. As a result, for the next six weeks or so the skin will be gnarly - until the outermost layer sloughs off. Calendula is safe enough that it is commonly used for diaper rash.
Thanks for the video, it was very informative and easy to follow. I live in Scotland and the arnica plant doesn't grow here, I was wondering if you knew where I could buy organic arnica seeds?

Thank you for this video. Can I use arinca powder? I have only come across the dried flowers so I'm thinking since the powder is the ground up flower it could work. Don't buy arnica oil. It's sooo expensive! Just buy the dried flowers and infuse your own oil. Takes time, but I only make it once every 2-3 years - a gallon jar of it - and then I'm worry-free long-term. I buy from herbco, far less costly: www.herbco.com/p-1282-arnica-flower-whole.aspx

I went and watched your video on how to make the oil. My husband doesn't like olive oil, he hates the smell, taste everything about it. Can I use any other kind of oil? We usually use peanut oil when cooking would that work?
Not Carolyn, but shelf stability depends on the oil you use and how it's stored. Oils can go rancid (you'll know if they smell like old crayons). The oil she uses in the wildcrafting arnica oil video is olive oil. It can last up to a couple of years without vitamin E, probably another year with the vitamin E.. To be honest, you can still use it after that. It's not harmful. The smell is just off because air oxidizes the oil. You just wouldn't want to ingest rancid oil. Ick. The only way for mold to grow is if moisture is introduced. As long as that doesn't happen, no mold. The vitamin E slows rancidity, doesn't impact mold or bacteria growth.
Thank for this video. Unfortunately, when I enter my email address I get the '401 page not found' thing. Any way to solve this issue? I've noticed in the comments that others are experiencing the same problem. God bless!

Can you please explain to me the difference in milk from the time it comes from the cow until it’s all separated out...like whole milk has cream right? Then the cream comes off and that’s skim....is the liquid that comes from the butter making process called buttermilk? If so why doesn’t it taste like buttermilk from the store?
I recently read an article on essential oils that blew my mind. The article stated that essential oils are actually toxic and more filler ingredients then the oil itself. The article said it was a multibillion-dollar industry that was basically fake. Is this true?
You can. I have. If you use olive oil, it's heavy and doesn't sink into the skin well. If you choose a different oil like grapeseed, safflower, fractionated coconut oil, or even melted shea butter/coconut oil, it'll sink in faster. In fact, if you wanted you could just melt shea or any other similar butter and infuse that with the flowers. Then when it's strained you'd be able to skip the beeswax entirely because you'd already have a thicker product.
Vitamin E should never be used as a preservative in order to extend the shelf life as it does not stop microbes/bacteria from growing within the products but it does help with the oils from going rancid! As for preservatives in skin hair body people have a HUGE misconception that preservatives in skin care are not good ....if people just do their research they will find that there are many plant based/derived preservatives that are commonly used in over the counter as well as handcrafted products and whatever supplier you purchase it from always displays the usage rates and they are there for a reason!
