      Traditional fabric bandages are problematic; they soak up medicine and stick to the wound as it scabs over. A more functional concept is to use at least 6 mil clear flexible polypropylene. I buy 48" rolls for many purposes. Cut useable sizes. Sterilize in alcohol or bleach and when dry store in good lid container. I apply salve of Manukian honey, she's butter and other herbs onto the polypropylene and then directly onto the wound. It is held in place with compression wrap or packaging roll film with tape securing the wrap. All of the salve is in direct contact with no pad absorption and no sticking to wound.

    A couple of tips for your viewers: if you heat only the beeswax in a double boiler, you can add the oil once the wax is melted and the heat is off. That way you don’t have to warm the herbal oil and risk reducing its potency. Also, when making the herbed oil, give it a good little bit in the blender before jarring it up and letting it sit. This releases a good deal more of the plant’s constituents into the oil and you’ll have a much stronger end product. 😊

    Yes, Bee Balm, also referred to as Horse Mint, or Bergamot herb, a member of the mint family, not to be confused with Citrus Bergamot which is an entirely different plant with different properties. Its often called Bergamot because of its aroma. But has no relationship to true citrus Bergamot. Bee Balm is wonderful for repairing damaged skin tissue. As is Comfrey and Plantain. Love what you are sharing dear lady! I'm 69 and have been into this study since I was 15. I'm so happy its being shared by you and this generation. One heard very little about it in my younger day. PS, I would never leave any moisture in a plant that goes into oil though. Better not to risk it.

      I was sad because I have no Yarrow or Bee Balm, but instead have Rose Geranium, Nasturtiums, Rosemary and Comfrey. So after all, I'll end up with a very nice mix as long as I don't overdo the Rosemary amounts. Oh, and I may have some Lavender still flowering as well. I'm going to pop them into the food dryer on very low and slow, and give this method a try once they're nicely dry.

    If I have a cut, bite, or burn to tend to, I go out and get a sedum leaf. I prefer the autumn joy variety. Just take the leaf and scrape one side. Put it directly on the affected area. Takes just a few minutes. The most important thing I've found that it works on is arthritis. I have 2 sisters who suffered from it until we tried it on their hands. I made this for my 10-year-old granddaughter. I used Yarrow, rosemary, oregano, thyme, and sage. My granddaughter has severe eczema on the tops of her hands. in late fall and winter every year knuckles are dry, cracked and painfully bleeding. Her mother has tried every lotion recommended by their pediatrician, and nothing has worked. The required handwashing and sanitizer that she has to use at school makes it so much worse. She started using this homemade lotion in early fall before it got cold outside. She uses it at least once a day and tries to use it at bedtime and before going to school in the morning. So far she is showing no signs of the eczema on her hands. She says “look Nana! My hands are still good!” This treatment has been a miracle for her. I thank you for sharing this recipe and showing how easy it was to make.

    When making herbal oils, it's best to use fully dried herbs. It isn't just mold that you need to worry about, there are some bacteria that can taint the oil if there's any water. Even the small amount in wilted herbs. Also, letting the oil steep for ~6-8 weeks is better than letting it steep over heat for a few hours.

    • @charmc4152
      @charmc4152 Рік тому +12

    • @gretchenhaugen7303
      @gretchenhaugen7303 Рік тому +26

      Totally agree. I know it sounds counter-intuitive to people but you don't want your medicine contaminated with bacteria and you certainly don't want it to mold in the container. My comfrey salve sits for a month to "percolate" and draw out all the medicine from the root. You get more potency if you give it time.

    • @gretchenhaugen7303
      @gretchenhaugen7303 Рік тому +29

      @@charmc4152 I would say it's negligible. Also, dried herbs take up less space than raw, so you're probably going to get more potency because you will be using more herbs i.e. half cup raw herb is less herbs than a half cup dried. Only time I use raw is if I'm going to ingest it immediately.

    • @Kayenne54
      @Kayenne54 Рік тому +21

      @@charmc4152 Drying most foods seems to concentrate nutrients; also all those illustrations you see of apothecary and herbal shops have bunches of dried herbs everywhere. To avoid wasting, you can measure the proper amounts directly into the jar you’re using and place the jar into the pot of water. Make sure you have something on the bottom of your pan, like a canning jar ring or trivet, you just don’t want the jar resting directly on the bottom of the pan. Also, you don’t want any water to boil up into your jar, so make sure your water level only comes up to about half the jar and don’t get your water to more then a small simmer. Hope this helps.

      Well, in my recipe, you have to make the plant oil. I use sunflower / olive oil blend. My method is a little technical, but there's reasons for it.
      I use Plantain for my oil. Comfrey heals outside to inside. Hence , you don't want to use it for puncture wounds. Plantain heals inside to out.
      Collect the Plantain and dry overnight. Then rip it apart, and put it in a 9x12 glass cake pan. Cover with the sunflower/olive oil blend. Heat in a small toaster oven to 120 -125° do NOT exceed this temperature, or you deteriorate the critical enzymes in the Plantain. With the bees wax. Do NOT exceed 130° -135° ( this is a trick told to me by an 85 y.o. master bee keeper.) Keep at the Plantain heating for 24-36 hrs.
      Here goes the recipe:
      1 cup Plantain oil
      1/4 cup melted bees wax.
      1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
      15 drops essential oil of:
      Lavender,Teatree,Peppermint, Clove, Lemon.
      Add the essential oils and Plantain oil. Gently mix them in. I do this to the warm Plantain oil. Pour the slightly cooled melted beeswax into the warm Plantain oil. Working quickly. Pour this into small jars.
      There are reasons to use these combinations and ingredients. I've poured over hours and hours of research to perfect this recipe. I can't keep up with the demand for this salve. One person actually wanted to invest in me to patent it!! He was THAT impressed with the results it gives. Of course, I, like other herbalists, feel that it is not ours to hoard, and get wealthy. It is ours to share this knowledge and pass it along. If you would like further information on this please feel free to ask.

    Been making a bum balm with dried calenduela flowers, dried lavender flowers or EO oil depending on whats available, olive oil, bees wax, shea butter after warmed to melt, adding vitamin EI whip them up with a mixer. It takes a bit, but it whips up to a thick cream.
    Have made it for last two babies of my six babies and thus far three grandbabies, zero problems of diaper rash, and use it also for chapped cheeks and lips from wind and sun exposure.
    Great for hands, elbows, knees feet as well.

    My family used lanolin on cuts, scrapes, and chapped skin. It has anti fungal, anti bacterial, and anti viral properties. It’s also wonderful in the healing process, sometimes no scar at all. It might be missing the anti inflammatory component and maybe not pain relief.

    Thank you so much for the Farmhouse Teas website recommendation! I ordered essential oils and the couple of herbs that I don't already grow myself for this salve recipe, along with some kombucha flavoring (which my husband really likes), and I was so surprised when my order arrived - The box my order came in was thoughtfully designed, the items were placed carefully in the box, and it contained so many free samples! The box even smelled fabulous before it was even opened. The items themselves are top quality and look/smell so fresh. I was so impressed that I took time to leave a good review on their site, and then I received a "thank you for your review" card along with more samples in the mail a few days later. Love these herbs and have made salve many times, but I always let the plant material dry completely before steeping. The only thing missing from a dried plant is the water content, which I prefer not to have in anything oil based in order to reduce the risk of mold and spoilage. Fill the jar to the absolute top with the oil for steeping, to prevent oxidation (again, to prevent mold). Steep in a dark cabinet 4-6 weeks and you will have a lovely potent oil for all uses...These are indeed wonderful and far preferable to over the counter ointments.

This way, I'm also getting less alcohol and more potent tinctures. We grow slow and then take off running when the time is right 😊

Then I remove the jars, open them and add the essential oils and vitamin E and give each one a good shake to blend.💜

      Try to get your beeswax from a beekeeper who does it without chemicals.
      I know some guys put things in their wax and honey you don't want in your salve.
      There are good guys and bad guys in the business.
      Better trust an old beekeeper from a village than some shop from internet.
      True story
      Some beekeepers worked with a guy from a very big company. He sells beeswax candles and all kinds of beeswax articles.
      They gave him their pure beeswax and he melted it and made pressed plates from the bees wax.
      So the bees could nist on the prepared wax plates.
      Then the bees were dieing in summer. Nobody knew why. The beekeepers were desperate. They sprayed medication, nothing saved them.
      Big loss.
      No bees, no honey, no wax, no business.
      Then someone tested the beeswax. They all had given their pure wax and they paid to get those pure pressed plates.
      Turned out the big company guy was greedy and filthy.
      He bought some cheap wax from China and mixed it with the pure wax. The chemicals and artificial flavor and artificial coloring killed the bees.
      The greedy guy had sold the pure wax from the beekeepers for very high prices to some cosmetic company. They did testing in their own laboratory so he could not betray them.
      The beekeepers got the fake wax plates which smelled and looked okay but killed the bees.
      .
      My family has some beekeepers.
      We bought the special equipment and one room in the house for wax.
      The melting and cooking and pressing needs to be done in winter.
      It is a hell of hard work and it is a sticky mess but it is pure and honest.
      The beekeepers bring their wax and they get their own wax in pressed plates as it should be.
      Of course they have to pay something.
      Find someone honest to get good pure beeswax.
      Chew it.
      They taste very different, colour is very different from every beekeeper.

    As a pharmacist, this is very interesting to watch. It reminded me a lot of my compounding training. If anyone's wondering why you don't measure the plants going into the oil but do measure the oil, beeswax, and all the rest later, the reason is that not all plants are the same. Even different parts of the plant or crops from year to year may have very different concentrations of the organic components you're trying to extract into the oil. It doesn't do a whole lot of good to try and measure it unless you've got all of the equipment on the back end to monitor those concentrations through to the final product. This is homemade, not FDA regulated. But, you do want the control over the texture of the salve, so you need to ensure the right amount of your beeswax relative to the other oils you're adding, so that stuff must be weighed and measured. If you get too much oil and not enough beeswax, it'll be more liquidy than you want at room temperature. I'll reserve commentary on the effectiveness of this stuff. Too many components, not enough time to do it properly, and I'm not trying to shill for any one product, let alone any of the Pharma companies. They couldn't pay me enough to sell my integrity like that. However, Neosporin (or generic triple antibiotic) is great stuff. Use it when you need it (like healing a dirty wound after you clean it). It works very well, so don't be afraid of it, even if you prefer this type of salve for routine scrapes and minor stuff like that.

    • @TravelinMama73

      I think effectiveness would depend on the person, the wound, etc. I make my own salve with different herbs than what she's using here but I believe the effectiveness of the oils and waxes would still be there sans herbs. Coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax have wonderful antiseptic, cleansing and healing properties. My salve worked on my daughter's poison ivy rash better in 12 hours overnight than 2 days of the steroid stuff her Dad got her from the doctor.
      My personal experience has been my salve works better than the antibiotic ointment and has the added benefit of being good for my skin 😁

      @@LGAussieyes, it will because there's nothing organic in it. Only organic material will decompose. The types of medicines that lose their effectiveness, however, will be labeled as such because they'll oxidize over time. Meaning they are less effective over time when exposed to air, even if they're not opened. Few packaging methods are truly vacuum sealed.

    On an adventure in Israel many years ago, I toured an olive tree farm. One great tip that I learned was how to know if you are purchasing pure Olive Oil. So many brands claim this, but they cut the olive oil with other oils to make more of a profit. So how do you know if you are purchasing 100% pure olive oil? If you are in a store when purchasing, bury that bottle of olive oil somewhere in a refrigerated section for about 20 minutes. If it is indeed pure olive oil, it will begin to look 'cloudy'. If it does not turn cloudy, then it is cut with another oil(s). Brilliant little gem of knowledge!

You can instantly remove any fruit based stain instantly, right before your very eyes. And yes. That would include red wine! Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc. Just pour boiling water over that stain. Based on the circumstances, sometimes I put a pot of water on the stove to boil and plunge the fabric right into the pot, like a kitchen towel that has been well saturated with berry juice. Works evertime! 👊

    Thank you. I’m just learning about making home made herbal remedies. I think these are skills that will be required in the not too distant future. We will need to teach our children. I love the way you explain everything. Subscribed . ❤ Much Love
