  • In recent months there has been an onslaught of laowai influencers arriving in China and within mere hours of arrival, sharing the shocking truth about China. It has truly been an eye opening time for me as a casual consumer of travel slop (good little piggie that I am), as I watch these mostly clueless people who seem to have done no preparation at all for their trip, wander about East Nanjing Road and buy overpriced tourist trap food and wonder why it tastes funny or isn't quite as hot as it should be or why it is expensive, or even better, why they have la duzi (they won't share this because they haven't been in China long enough to know that it is ok to share!)
Even as a retiree I truly don't have time to watch each and every one of these videos (one was 4 hours long wtf) and comment on all the nuttiness within, but I did see a noticeable trend that I thought was vital and necessary for me to comment on here in this video. This is actually a subconscious sense of language superiority. Because of the power of the United Kingdom and the United States in the last few hundred years, many native English speakers naturally feel that English is the "language" itself, and that therefore, no matter who they are talking to, the other person should be able to understand them to a greater or lesser extent.
In fact, in Asia, many people (especially the middle-aged and the elderly) know English only as hello, ok, no, good, byebye, and love.
I'm not criticizing them, just saying it's an understandable phenomenon.

I went to China a few years ago. You are 100% correct. Before I went to China, China of Western Media:"Evil communist country.backward smoggy cities, where everyone still rides bicycles and wear grey old clothes because they are all poor and starving. The streets were full of police and soldiers.". Only after I went to China did I realize that China is advanced and futuristic. The real China: "Very developed, cheap, cashless society, very green and environmentally friendly, very safe, no drugs or guns. no vagrants and thieves. The people are very friendly." It’s great to see your authentic shots of China in your videos.I am so impressed by this. All of my western friends who made visits to China came back with extremely high praises on China.

One frustrating thing for me is that some of those vloggers may have spent months in China but still haven't set up their Alipay and WeChat Pay properly. So every time they buy stuff from small vendors, they run into problems or have to pay cash instead. I remember one incident from the Brandon & Shannon videos where they were buying some fried leafy stuff from an old lady. She took her time to make the food for them, only to realize they couldn't pay via phone. So she ended up giving them the food for free. Brandon blamed Alipay for not accepting Western credit cards. Like, come on, man, how difficult is it to go to a Chinese bank, deposit a couple of thousand RMB, and get this problem solved once and for all? I remember the first thing I did on the day I landed in Canada as an international student was to open a bank account and deposit some cash. Somehow it seems impossible for them🤷‍♂

I agree, some of the content from those countless vloggers coming to China, though not poisonous towards China (which was refreshing), was nonetheless very cringe, they seemed completely uninformed about the country, visited mostly tourist traps, ate junk food, didn't educate themselves much on the history of the places they were in, etc. On the other hand, they still painted a more positive and fair image of China to counteract the toxic disinformation produced by the western media.

You asked for it and I would like to see it so here goes! I travelled to China the first time I think around 2008 as a small organic farmer. I was supposed to go in 1971 as a botany student but China shut the doors ( the hippie culture?!) I studied the crap out of China and watched a bunch of videos so I thought I was prepared. From the moment of descending low over the Southern Regions of Guangxi Province and looking down at hundreds and hundreds of small farms much like mine in the US I knew I was in for something big. My experiences with local and federal law enforcement was exactly as you state, respectful and helpful but intelligent too. I spent almost 14 years living and travelling there in the winter months when I was idle.
What I would like to see from someone like yourself is more in depth videos on given regions and or cities and villages. I will use Dali in Yunnan for example. I would like to see more details of the culture there even following some of the indigenous people back up to their more remote villages and getting a good visual feel for how they live and how beautiful it is there. The ancient engineering of their mountain spring water system is worth talking about. Most people do not understand that a big chunk of China is much like our West Coast Mountains from the Canadian border through the Sierras. Also, there are rumours of Europeans setting up breweries and pastry-bread shops in Dali. Don't get me wrong, I can eat noodles in all their splendid variety forever but I would also find it interesting to learn how this new foreign food availability is actually working out. Click bait titles make me not click on the video usually. Not always though. Everywhere I have travelled in China was spellbinding. Thanks , from a new subscriber.

Japanese American Kuji Rolls (rhymes with Sushi Rolls) reviewed several electric wheels while living in Dali. I recall seeing a 2008 / 2009 YT video by an American graduate student about study program on rural family size digesters in the Lijiang area. Unfortunately, that video is no longer available. There's a UN video on biogas in China from about 14 years ago that's quite informative. There's also a more recent video from 2 years ago about the subject of carbon offsetting by turning manure into renewable energy in rural China. I'm curious if such techniques are used in industrialized farms here in the US or other Western countries to produce or harvest methane and fertilizers.

As a Chinese, I am very grateful for the blogger's comments. From the recent videos of UA-camrs visiting China, I have found that people have no understanding of China's land area and diversity. The size of a province or even a city in China is equivalent to the size of some European countries, and China has 34 provinces. For example, Chongqing is the same size as Austria, Zhejiang is the same size as Iceland, Yunnan is the same size as Japan, and the city of Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia is the same size as the entire UK. Many Chinese people have not been able to travel all over China, and China has 56 ethnic groups. Even if we travel domestically, we need to make plans in advance and respect the customs and habits of the local ethnic groups. We warmly welcome you to travel to China and sincerely remind you that making preparations in advance can greatly improve your travel comfort.❤

For us Chinese, traveling also requires a lot of preparation and research. There are mainly two factors: space, and time.
    1. In terms of space, China is too big. Most people in the eastern region have never been to Tibet or Xinjiang. Many people in the south have never seen snow. Before I went to college, I thought Lanzhou was all grassland, and I thought everyone in Guangdong ate the same food. No, Chaoshan, Hakka, Guangfo are all different. Shenzhen also has a lot of great Hunan cuisine because of its large population in Hunan).
    2. In terms of time, China is changing too fast. County towns and rural areas have also undergone tremendous changes in recent years. New squares and gardens have been built near residential areas, and rural areas have also undergone extensive renovations, including the construction of folk villages and sports venues. Some new second-tier cities and new urban areas are even more beautiful than Beijing and Shanghai. Various new businesses are constantly sinking. We ourselves don’t even realize that places we haven’t been to for a long time have become so beautiful. The tourism industry is also developing rapidly. Many popular attractions require online reservations, a lot of tourist information is out of date, and various buildings and scenic spots are constantly updated.
Chinese young people are increasingly relying on Internet information for travel. We use Douyin, Dianping, Xiaohongshu, BiliBili, and WeChat official accounts to check travel guides, meals, attractions, and everything is in Chinese. This is very hard for foreigners.

Yunnan make sure you go to dali 大理 (hike the mountain and see the old town) and shaxi 沙溪 (hike and monkeys and genuine old town) From there probably up to shangrila 香格里拉. I think you should be able to take bus from there to Sichuan , can check out abazhou 阿坝州 and jiuzhaigou 九寨沟for nature and more Tibetan culture. Head on down to Chengdu a few days. Then off to Guizhou . Miaozhai 苗寨and zhenyuan 镇远 (the drone clips at the very end of this video) … probably a few other places that interest you in Guizhou before heading to Guangxi. Guangxi has lots of good food and nature… at this point depends on you lol. More hikes or little villages (chengyang bazhai 程阳八寨)or big cities and beaches (北海) is pretty nice for relaxing. Detian waterfall is cool too. 德天大瀑布 . Ultimately from Guangxi to Vietnam . You’d have a pretty full month with cities, villages and nature. Good luck and have fun

Thank you Eric for sharing your thoughts. Maybe it's because I'm Chinese American, I find it more interesting to watch YT videos from non-Chinese to see how they perceive China which might explain why I only watched a few videos by Little Chinese Everywhere vs many videos by Stu of China Traveler. Trevor James of The Food Ranger is also fun and informative to watch. Wonder what you think of an Indian traveler's channel Nomadic Tour - he spent 2 or 3 months in China in 2023 and posted 20 relatively long videos on what he experienced. He has about 687k subscribers and 9 of those 20 videos have over 1M views. A video on friendly Chinese police officers got 1.4M views and another on Xinjiang got over 3M views. By the way, I was quite moved by your video about your dad's past in Taiwan. A part of his past is similar to the American professor William Brown who was in the US military in Taiwan in the 1970s. He ended up teaching at Xiamen University for many years.

Also, I get those click-baits could help them gain more views but the title in itself is misleading and sending a wrong message to the people who just read the title and don’t bother to click on and watch the videos.

Good points. I guess the charm of watching first time visitors to China is to watch their reactions when they first experience the cities, the food, see the people, their livelihood, the culture after hearing so much bad and backward about the country and it's people. That really does sell. Especially when they start comparing to back home in the West! Although many just want to win, but for many others we just wanna see how their videos could change the lens back home. There's a certain satisfaction in that for some reason. For example Ben Coleman, he is saying things many people want to say! It's reactionary videos I must say. I'm British, but have lived here on and off since 2008. I've virtually retired, but I'm 65, and Britain won't give me any retirement money until I'm 67.
I live in Changchun with my wife, and I currently have no income, and I'm from a working class background, so we're 'careful' with money, as my savings won't last forever.
I echo your recommendation of Hunnan, as its one of the few places we've visited and I want to go back.
I'd value videos of different parts of China as my wife and I would like to travel a bit. Short 10 minute videos work best for me as she's always busy with either housework, the grandson, or her latest soap, and although it's me who organises these trips, she's the boss and would normally need to OK the trip. 😊
We're on a tight budget, so although we'd probably fly part of the way rail travel is often our most often used mode of transport, and although everyone raves about the bullet trains (yes they're good) I find the slow, cheap trains often put one in touch more with the locals and people maybe more of my working class standing.
So, yes please! Videos with travel content from interesting places across China.
If you can include Chinese (spoken or sub-titles) that would be great, and I note, you have quite a few Chinese viewers.
I speak Chinese and read it.
Once again, thanks for this video. I also like Stu's videos. I'll look up the 美女you recommended.

Like, most of their content comes from a good place and usually they aren't pretending to be experts in any way. But of course I get what you're saying here as well, I mean you live in China, you know China much better than they do. Like you said most people know very little about China, esp. with the language and culture barrier, and just how vast and diverse China is, it's really difficult for them to build a good understanding within a short period of time. I'm overseas Chinese and honestly most people here don't even know what to order in Chinese restaurants in English. So I'm not at all surprised that people struggle to find good food in china. There's this UA-camr from New Zealand, lovely guy, he bought food entirely from the convenience store for the week he was in Shanghai haha... Obviously they can't be compared to people like yourself but they are better than a lot of people here who have so much prejudice against China that they wouldn't step foot in China to begin with.

As an overseas Chinese person, I really appreciate a non-biased view of China (or any topic) online. The internet is so polarizing (maybe because most people are not virtually active, and a lot of people never leave comments). So to see someone being objective on the internet (on any topic, not just on China) is rare.
I live in the US and mainstream media is polarizing as well (with the Progressives vs Conservatives narrative being highlighted all the time).
I’ve come to the conclusion that the media (both mainstream and social media) is a tool for sharing ideas, but it’s more important to have knowledge of facts and to cultivate your own perspective, which is uninfluenced by anyone else’s point of view. This will also make you immune from bias.
Also, ideas are useless in reality, unless you take action on them. Most people absorb ideas online but don’t take action offline.
I do not mind what people say about China (or any other topic) online. No matter what kinds of content I come across, I make sure that I am uninfluenced by other people’s biases.

TOO TRUE! I’m so happy to see this video. You’re spot on! Because there are huge differences in language and culture between China and other countries, especially western ones, some vloggers or influencers somehow failed to go deep into China during their journey. Though I can understand these barriers and thanks for their sharing, their videos still strengthen stereotypes of China, like you said, the pressure of entering China, and junk food or street food. Actually, it’s pretty easy to get into China, and delicious food is offered in lots of great restaurants. China is such a big country, and every province has different cuisines and cultural characteristics. If you want to experience international style or high development in a city, go to Shanghai. If you prefer ancient towns, head to Jiangsu or Yunnan. Want to see magnificent natural spots, Guangxi or Guizhou are good choices. Also, different seasons show different views of a same place. You can choose the peak or off-season based on your needs. Anyway, China is such a big country that it’s really hard to simply sum it up by a superfition taste of it.

Hah you are right, but I personally don’t even expect them to understand that much… it’s unlikely they will even notice if 国语 or 上海话 are being spoken so can’t expect them to pay attention to nuances of the people… but for things like food which they will encounter 3x per day probably, at least learn something before making broad declarations lol. I watch this channel to hear you talk about your ET5T and how Nio is the best car brand in the world.. Not critiquing the food critiques.😅 😁😁
But I did watched that video, she is Indonesian Chinese, Chinese food must taste a lot differently as she understand it as a child, especially her hokkien origin.Hokkien food stress on freshness with light taste and hardly had anything spicy or oily. And Indonesian food's spicyness is very different brand of spicyness compare to most local Chinese cuisines.
What you eat as a child kinda set the standard for "good food" later in life, it is understandable in my view. Unless you are a refugee trying to run away from famine as a child.
Recent archeology finds in China suggest artifacts with oracle i.e. written words and evidence of agriculture can be traced back as far back as 8,000B.C.
I guess what I am trying to say is in the grand scheme of things, people misunderstand and people get confused, this "everybody(in the west) hate China" phase will only be a footnote in the history book, will be described as the USA in empirial overstrech mode and throwing a tantrum phase.
China is still China, still the world's only continuous living civilization.
Overall jetlag warriors videos of travelling China is a net positive to counter the western media's effort to demonize and to dehumanize China, and their effort to push for WWIII(i.e. nuclear war between US and China). For that as a Chinese person I thank them. Also as a general rule of thumb, always have minimum or low expectations of others and always manage your expectations about uncertainties and outcomes, it will make your daily life a lot happier.😁😁😏😏

UA-cam rabbit hole took me here; I really enjoyed some of the old town footage in the second half of your video! I'm Chinese and mainly live overseas these days. I haven't gone back in about 7 years. When I finally went back last month, I realised many things had changed, and I barely even recognised my hometown (Fuzhou).
I agree that travel does require a bit more research to ensure a better experience (I went to Chongqing and Shenzhen for travel). I thought, as a Chinese, I could just swing it and find the POIs or authentic local foods, but it was a hit-and-miss (when I'm on my own). Luckily, I got local friends to show me around, which saved the day.
Really interested in the footage of old towns in your videos (Yunnan). I want to know more about those places. Next time going back I want to pick a beautiful but relatively quiet town to just live there for a few weeks!
    Thanks for the video!

One of the things that annoys me about the recent flood of travellers is that it took visa restrictions being relaxed a bit for them to even try. As someone from the Caribbean I have to get a Visa to visit most countries. The visa application process depending on the country can be a expensive, invasive and time wasting endeavour (US visa for example costs US$185 non-refundable) yet it hasn't stopped me or most people I know from applying and travelling.
Yet the folks from these countries because they encounter one country they can't just stroll in like they do most others they stayed away. They fear/aversion to any kind of inconvenience that these people have is telling of their nature.
I can never support any of their content and prefer to watch the content creators who have been in china for years and even decades in some cases.
They exemplify the paristic nature of content creation that always needs to feed on the last trend to go "viral".
I guess at the very least they're generating some tourist revenue so they are good for something.

To say all Chinese food tastes like Sichuan chilli oil is so air-headed. Has she been to Hong Kong, dim sum, Beijing, Shanghai cuisine, then there is the Chengdu, Tibetan styles. So shallow it drives me crazy.

I personally pretty enjoyed videos from Jetlag Warriors and Ken Abroad. I think impromptu travel videos have their value. It's a fun process of figuring things out from zero knowledge. But what you said also has its point. It's easy to fall into traps and build wrong impression when you know little about something. I think what those travellers need is a better balance between research and improptu experience. For example, they can ask for advice from locals after they get there, then they'll know what's the local food that people eat from day to day.
And about the "stressful arrival" video from Ken Abroad, his stress did not come from immigration customs. His entry was quite early in the video, and he said the border officers were very nice. The stress came from things after his entry.

    • @Eric_Garrison
      @Eric_Garrison  3 місяці тому +7

I watched the video you mention, I guess a few weeks or months ago now. I remember him trying to film while actually going through immigration which is just stupid imo but yea, I get you. My point was more that the clickbait titles perpetuate stereotypes even if the content is not doing that. Just look through the comments on my video here you’ll see a lot of people who are upset that I said China is the most hated country. Titles and thumbnails like that might discourage travelers from China because they don’t actually engage with the content. I thought my point was clear but it may not have been

Thank you, Eric! I also commented on the JetLag Warriors video. I want to say that street food is very important for travelers because it is simple and easy to have.
I am so agree with you. If you really want to enjoy a new country and experience its culture, it is very important to eat local cuisine.
Also, these days I have tried to search for information about the food of Guangzhou, the city where I live, from a foreign side using English.
I indeed found it difficult to find truly authentic Guangzhou cuisine restaurants.
Information barriers exist, but basic information can still be found. So I think a local guide is very important, and it can be a bit challenging without one.
