I live in China, been here for 11 years. Last September I visited my country of birth, (Australia) I attended two community meetings. At these meetings every person had a negative opinion about China. I decided to do a little test that I thought would give the people at these meetings something to think about. I asked the people for a show of hands if they thought their government and Main Stream Media lies to them, the response was, everyone raised their hand. So my question to them was, so all of you say that you know you are being lied to by your government and the media, but where China is concerned you think they are telling you the truth? At both meeting I could see and hear brain cogs working!

I just got back from China and I got the same feeling you have. Clean, beautiful, people are so nice and helpful, no poverty, no homeless people, agriculture fields every where, hard working people, very quiet, drive very well and very respectful. Shanghai is mind blowing for sure. True, very few people speak English Google translate is very helpful !!!!! I will go back for sure. Love all your comments.

If you need to find someone who can speak English, remember to look for someone with glasses or a student first. It may not be very good, but it will basically work.

Hi Ken, I am Chinese. When you say you feel sorry for Chinese people that people from other countries, mainly western countries have very negative perspecitves on us, I felt the other way round. I feel sorry for westerners that they were deceived by the main media to believe in what they were told. They were deprived of the freedom to learn about the truth, about what is happening in the world.
There is a Chinese saying, "One must understand your competitor and yourself in order to stay at a winning position in the long run." In a way, the western media is hindering the people and the country to learn and to advance.
Not only have their people been deceived, they are losing credibility and following from people like us who are bi/triculture and know Chinese. Many like me no longer trust the West!

One of the most ironic things is that the Chinese know that they have a network firewall, so they always tend to trust more external information to examine their own perceptions. Westerners always view China with arrogance and colored glasses, and any information that objectively describes China's advantages will be filtered. As a result, the group of people who really have a firewall have become the most objective in the world, while those who think they are objective do not realize that they have built a firewall in their consciousness.

hey man, I am a native Chinese, I am glad you discovered the real China. I also want to know did you face any obsticles in things like booking hotels, enterring attractions or making payments ect? I learn from social media that only a few hotels open for foreigners, and wechat pay doesnt accept foreign card
Did you have any problems getting a hotel room ? I am considering traveling in China again, but hotel options for foreigners were limited when I was in Beijing (years ago.)
still same, and even worse after the pandemic. only a few( mostly the more expensive ones) are qualified to receive foreigners. I suggest you to book online so you only sees those qualified. on the otherside smaller hotels/ towns just don't is not motivated to get qualification, they may not get even 1 foreigners in years@@georgeinjapan6583

As an American living in Los Angeles surrounded by crimes, homeless everywhere , illegals, heavy traffic, road rage, shootings, and poor air quality 1/3 of the year, I will say true FREEDOM is the ability to walk the street at midnight, having an affordable public transportation that is fast during rush hours, a healthcare system that wouldn’t make you homeless once you are sick, less rude drivers, not being forced to smell urines when walking around downtown, and not selling your first born eating out! All the basics of living and feeling alive. None of the above interests our politicians.

I'm Chinese and my wife is American. We met in Chengdu, China where happen to be my hometown. We've lived in the united States about a half decade now. We are thinking to move back to China next year -- the city got a loooot better, develop a lot more in just 4 years when i went back visit. I was shocked by how clean, Safe and cheap it is Which i took for granted. The united States unfortunately goes the opposite way. Wokeness, homeless, crazy cost of living, illegal immigrants. Drugs.....I love America. But the America now it's not the America i Loved. Planning to get my wife Chinese greencard down the road.

it's common to hear that one should separate the people from the government. however i find it hard to apply in Chinese context. under the so-called "one party leadership", every achievement u see in china like education and infrastructure are done by the government, and the majority if not a huge amount of people are thankful to the government. chinese are very supportive to the gov and is highly respected 💪
People who have actually been to China should probably think about it. Not only are their views on China wrong, but their views on the Chinese Communist Party are also not objective enough. I once saw a sentence that was very interesting: "In other countries, you can easily change the political party but it is difficult to change the policy. In China, you cannot change the political party, but it is easy to change the policy." In fact, the Communist Party of China is a very efficient organization that actively listens to various opinions in society and adjusts quickly. I just want to add that, although the Communist Party of China is the largest political party, there are actually at least 7 or 8 other political parties in China. And all of these parties do have representation in the legislative bodies in China. Also, all minorities in China are also guaranteed representation. That is why it is called the People's Republic of China. China's Whole Process Democracy is based on extensive consultation with the public at all levels of government on policy matters. In America, once they get your vote, you don't hear from them again for 4 years.

@@wakasukku yes. Different times. There weren't a lot of foreigners in China yet. First time I went to Shanghai back in 1997 Pudong didn't exist. There was nothing on that side of the river. Trains were still quite slow. Took us 2 days from Beijing to Henan. Taking a bus in Beijing was crazy with people trying to climb into the bus through the windows or dragging other passengers off the bus to hop in themselves. Survival of the fittest...
It was a completely different country with a lot of dirt, poverty, spitting and ignorance. For sure they had an incredible economic development since then.
Haters gonna be haters, just let them be, rot away in their own corners and be consumed by negativity. These are people are so brainwashed by their own media and govt that it feels safer to stick to what they've already been told. So you can never change their opinion, and there's no need to please everyone either. Just do what you do, and be honest about what you like and don't like about a country. One is allowed to not like some aspects of a country, and as a traveller myself, I have my own opinion about good and bad sides of every country that I visited. It's not what you say, it's how you say it without being offensive or insensitive about it.

Hi Ken, I watched almost all of your video visiting China, now you got 1 more subscriber.
Next time when you visit China, try to avoid the long national holiday on Oct.1st, after that periods it may be the best season for most of the area in China. Hope to see your next film to Xijing again. BTW since Xinjiang is cold, you'd better visit there in the summer.
Also the good news that Chinese government noticed the voice that current payment for foreigner needs improvement, I believe the issue will be solved soon. Hope when you are in China in 2nd half of this year, your trip will be more easier

@@KenAbroadClips too many people in the West stuck living at the bottom of the well and take the false narratives or at least outdated narratives that they are fed with as gospel. The world changes and progress everyday, they don't want believe it because they are at nothing changes or worse have regressed.
As a Chengdu native, I highly recommend a visit to Jiuzhaigou, even though the journey can be a bit rough, the sights you see are worth it. When I was a kid studying Chinese geography, my teacher told us that the most beautiful water is in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan Province. The most beautiful mountains are in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. The most beautiful mountains and water are in Guilin, Guangxi Province.
I’m happy to second that. I went to Jhiuzhaighou and Huanglong (the lakes and waterfalls, national park) many years ago before Croatia’s Plitvice Park. I like it more than Croatia. I have also been to Zhangjiazhie, an inspiration for that Avatar movie.
I think they should make it easier for foreigners to visit Jiuzhaigou on their own.
Some USA apps were not really being blocked in China, most simply is not willing to signature follow China's law when applying for permit

I’m a Malaysian and glad you felt Chinese cuisines are good. Unfortunately when you’re in Malaysia, you hardly have Chinese cuisines which you must try also.
You mentioned you’re sorry that the world has an anti-China view which I beg to differ. Only the Westerners ( not all thou ) are anti-China and they are only less than a quarter of the world population thus is not representative as ‘ rest of the world’. In fact the Global South, Africa and Latin America IS the rest of the world and they’re very pro-China.
When you’re next in Malaysia I’ll be glad to show you around KL for some great Chinese food.

Hi, Ken,
I watched your travel videos in China and found them very interesting. The cities you visited make up less than 1% of China, and the essence of China lies not in these provincial capitals, but in the natural landscapes and historical sites that you seem to enjoy more. In your video, you mentioned that you plan to travel to China again in September or October. Here are some suggestions for you:
1. Fly to Shenzhen or Zhuhai first, bring your passport and driving license (with a Chinese translation), and apply for a temporary driving license at the Zhuhai/Shenzhen Traffic Management Service Center. This way, you can legally rent and drive a car in China.
2. Late September to early October is the best time to visit Kanas in Xinjiang, as well as the best tourist season for the Northern Xinjiang Grand Circle. Hemu Village is definitely worth a visit! It is one of the "100 must-visit places in China" as rated by China National Geographic. Travelers from all over China usually book hotels and plan their itineraries six months in advance, so you should start booking now.Xinjiang occupies one-sixth of China's land area, roughly equal to the size of 5 Germanys. Public transportation is not very suitable for traveling in Xinjiang, so you will need a temporary driving license and a rented car. The most beautiful scenery in Xinjiang is along the road while driving. Just stop anywhere to take photos, and you will get picture that could be used as postcards.However, traveling the Northern Xinjiang Grand Circle route from Urumqi and back will take about 15 days, which will consume your visa-free time.
3. China's G318 is recognized by China National Geographic as the "China Human Landscape Grand Avenue" and one of the world's top 10 famous national highways. G318 is a national highway from Shanghai to Lhasa, Tibet, passing through a variety of representative scenic spots such as urban landscapes, historical sites, natural landscapes, with elevations ranging from 0 to 5000 meters. Glaciers, lakes, mountains, forests, grasslands, and rivers can all be found along this highway. It is a lifelong dream for many Chinese people to travel the entire route and visit all the attractions, as it requires a long time to do so. If you plan to visit Chengdu, I suggest starting from there and renting a car to drive on G318 to Lhasa, Tibet. This segment is the most scenic part of G318, where you will traverse the plains to the plateau, encountering glaciers, mountains, plateaus, Southeast Asian rainforest climate, the source of Asian rivers, Tibetan culture, and other landscapes. It takes approximately 15 days to explore the attractions along G318.
4. If you come to China again, I recommend purchasing a translation device from iFlytek. Based on my testing, its Chinese-English or Chinese-German translations are very accurate and should facilitate your travels in China. Alternatively, you can download the YouDao Translate app (Logo looks like a bird's head) onto your phone. This is a very popular translation app in China.
5. In China, it is generally recommended to use Bing for search and Gaode map instead of Google Maps.

It's a private company alright, but it's now a Singaporean company, not a mainland Chinese company. This is an important distinction here. Having a Chinese CEO for a company doesn't imply that the company is owned by mainland Chinese.
One may argue that it was formally owned by the same parent company that owns DouYin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok in the mainland. But look at the facts now: TikTok's owning company is based in Singapore, not in the mainland, and the CEO is a Singaporean, with a wife from the US. So, the politicians should just keep their hands off the business world and let the trade flourish instead.

I just saw a news report a couple of days ago that Chinese government departments have become aware of payment issues faced by foreign travelers. They are optimizing payment software and are encouraging some shops to resume using POS machines (because the original POS machines were abandoned due to digital payments)
Maybe this will make travel things easier, but that may not happen very soon….😂

My wife's cousin (French) asked me once a question about Xinjiang, he saw from the media that foreigners need special permission to be able to go to Xinjiang, he asked me if it is true. I am clearly not so informed so I answered I don't know. Now I get the answer from you, imo a trust worthy vloger. 👍
If you're going to tourist spots near the border area, then yes, you need a permit, but it takes just a few minutes (Mainly to prevent poachers.). If it's elsewhere, then no permit is required. We, as locals, find it amusing how the media pretends to be spied on, shaking their cameras as if being chased. And some of them are very annoying, especially the way they disrespectfully stop people and shove cameras in your face.
@@worldhd1652 honestly I believe because Xinjiang is so near certain country borders that precautions the government takes is really for the safety of the locals in case of infiltration of extremists. I think for those who visit parts of Kashmir controlled by India, will know what oppression is felt like, even their internet can be cut off from the world at any time. This is from visiting there for a while. Beautiful place but can't really develop.

Good unbiased video, the people of the country are friendly and the cultural experience is beautiful. The language can be a small barrier but communication is possible.
Visited in 2019. Had a ball. I was a bit nervous when I got there initially but that soon changed.The people were great and what surprised me the most was what a great sense of humor they have. Cleanest, safest, country I’ve visited with arguably the best transportation system in the world. My wife is a Mandarin speaker and has WeChat so that made everything easy. I’m looking forward to another trip soon.

My suggestion is, next time you visit China, don't just go to the cities; go see the natural scenery, such as Avatar Mountain (Zhangjiajie), Yunnan Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Guilin Yangshuo; they are all extremely beautiful places.

@@ranochung I've to agree, Xinjiang and Yunnan are 2 must go places in either spring or autumn, but not winter in the case of Xinjiang. These 2 provinces have the most concentration of breathtaking and diverse landscapes.
These places are more difficult than megacities for a foreign tourist who can't spek Chinese.

I lived in Chengdu Sichuan province China from January 2010 to March 2021. I received a job offer as a consultant in a private company and I thought why not accept it for 1 year it turned into 11 years. Most people can't understand how awesome China is. Chengdu is a dream city and even better was my day-to-day experience dealing with the Chinese people. In my experience, I was treated with the most absolute respect, kindness and friendliness.
Visited China three times. It was pleasant experience, nice people, clean and comfortable. I don't get why so many hate for China.

Go to Jiuzhaigou in October! You can take a bus from Chengdu easily, and the scenery along the way is incredibly beautiful. The water in Jiuzhaigou is the most stunning I have ever seen in my life! ❤
Yes, Jiuzhaigou is very beautiful (but beware of altitude sickness) and the railway to Jiuzhaigou will be built soon.It takes 2 hours from Chengdu to reach Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong.
@@user-wb2df2ke2s I believe the railway it's already in operation. It doesn't take you right to the doorstep of course, still need about a 2 hr coach ride I guess but beats the 10hr I did by long distance bus from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou a long long time ago.

Hello Ken, I'm from China and I've been watching your vlogs from the very beginning. I really appreciate you showing the world a different China from what they imagine. I completely understand the current public opinion environment. Populism is rampant in both China and the West, and people only believe what they want to believe. The number of people in the West who have a negative impression of China is matched by the number of Chinese people who have the same negative impression of the West, and neither can convince the other. I think the simplest solution is to do what you're doing - stepping into each other's lives, increasing our understanding of each other, and breaking down some stereotypes. Of course, China has a lot of problems, such as low labor rights, poor social welfare, and media censorship, but we can improve step by step, and believe that tomorrow will be better. I often tell Chinese netizens not to be so angry with the West, to go abroad and see the real West. Similarly, I hope that our friends in the West will come to China more and understand the real China. The world is too chaotic now, we need to "Heal the world and make it a better place".

Chinese here, the negativity that we face on social media in the west on ANY subject involving China is a daily occurrence, and is a constant source of frustration for me, it's sad how many people in the west are being brainwashed without realizing it. Thank you for presenting facts.

Chinese apps is advantage, not a negative point, isn't it? Many countries you can't register to local apps if you're tourist. In china you can register alipay and be able to do everything: hotels, any tickets, order food in restaurant, delivery, pay anywhere, any street food or small shops
The world should catch up with china,not let china go backwords to meet foreign travelers needs i guess.
They have noticed this issue and will add POS machines in the future

It is and it is not. I installed both WeChat and AliPay but I had a lot of problems when come to paying with an international card. Sometimes my card would get rejected for no reason and I would be left with no option but leave my shopping behind and leave. Preparing cash in advance is a must do in order to make sure you are actually able to do payments. Also they do not have the option to select English as a language for a lot of their apps (maps, Didi which is a replacement for Uber, etc.)

I met a girl when I was traveling in west German last year. She was very nice to help me from struggling with the public transportation strikes. We had a great conversation except that content mentioned about my country-China. She told me firmly people are not allowed to go to Xinjiang before they get permission, I replied her no need actually, she looked like not believing what I was saying and kept saying something negative she heard from the Media. Finally I said to her: I am native born Chinese, you don’t trust me say rather than western Media, don’t you think it’s kind of funny? She replied to me: you’re all brainwashed by your Government. To such extent, I had to stop this topic and felt sorry for the people like her, never have chance to go China but even better understand China than a Chinese ,.Thank you for your video telling something real about this ancient country .

Hi Ken Having spent time in China myself, I too was blown away be the difference between what I was expecting to experience as a result of the mainstream media's reports on China, and what I actually experienced during my time there. Having been fortunate to be able to visit a number of countries in Europe, the middle East, Asia and the U.S . I would rate China as my equal number one favourite country alongside Japan. I love the way both countries have been able to blend thousands of years of tradition and culture with 22nd century technology, a high standard of living, with very high levels of safety and cleanliness. I also found the people to be extremely friendly and proud, with a very detailed knowledge of world events. unlike the ignorant, knuckle draggers that couldn't find China on a map even if was labelled, but in their delusional ignorance, feel that they are entitled to accuse you of being in the pocket of the Chinese Communist Party ( they always have to emphasise the Communist parts). When the reality is, that the U.S. government, through its three letter agencies, actually pay media reporters US $1,000 for every anti-China article that they publish. I believe that the money comes from the U.S state department via the National Endowment for Democracy

As a native Chinese, I have been to a few countires, I know how Western media describes about China. They all report really negatively. I love my home country, and I am aware that the government framework is different from western world's, but that doesn't mean that we are living a bad life. In fact, Chinese people are kind and willing to make friends with foreign tourists. Thank you Ken, for filming this vlogs with fair opinions, we always welcome you to visit China again.

I lived in China for 6 years and I loved it. I came back to the US before the pandemic so I can only speak about China before the lockdowns. The people are so friendly, so helpful, just a wonderful place to visit. Everyone should spend some time in China and find out for yourself how great it is.

I'm another Aussie (also from Sydney) who's travelled to China, making some 12 visits. You asked for suggestions, as to which other cities you should visit. I suggest Hangzhou (only 1 hour away on a fast train). My partner and I think it's one of the most beautiful cities we've been to. Try to stay near the lake, and experience the social life of the city. It's claimed that Marco Polo called it the "most beautiful city in the world." And another close to Shanghai city is Suzhou. Take a ferry trip around the many canals in the city. Suzhou is some 2000 years old, and there are some beautiful gardens. Nanjing also is "close" on High Speed train and has many historical sights to see. And Beijing also has lots of historical sites and is well worth a visit. Other cities I would like to visit in the future, are Chongqing (the WW2 capital) and Chengdu. I hope that I can get there before log. And there's lot's of small cities too that can be just as interesting. Hope you also enjoy seeing many of them.

The period from late June to the end of August and the first week of October are student holidays in China.
July and August are the summer months in China, the greenest and most beautiful season with the most tourists.
If you want to see the golden autumn scenery, you have to visit it at the end of September and mid-October.
For example, Kanas Scenic Area in Xinjiang Province, Dali and Shangri-La in Yunnan Province
Maybe September is a compromise choice,
Due to China's climate, except for Hainan Province, I personally do not recommend that you come to China again in winter for the natural scenery.
Of course, if you don’t plan to see the scenery, the number of tourists will indeed be much less after the second week of October.
Regardless of whether you see the natural scenery or not, you are welcome to go to Yunnan and Xinjiang.

1. About homeless people in China: here's the thing, while western countries are talking about how people are living under controll of the government in China, you can think the Chinese government as parent like, which means they would solve the homeless problems. Usually when a homeless person been found somewhere, the local governors will send them to the relief station in the city, after that, the people working in the station will try to help the homeless people to get a job(like very low class jobs), but most of the time the homeless people will be send back to their domicile of residence identified by their social ID, the people there will take care of them. So, basically most of the homeless people are able to get a low paid job to feed themselves. On another hand, homeless is a condition that hard to met, because almost every family has their own house in the very rural China because after China the country is established, Chinese government took all the properties from capitalist and re-assigned to the farmers. All the living matters and social society problems nowadays are related to people want to have better city life instead of living in rural China.
2. About rude Chinese tourists and nice local residents: both of them are truly exist, the reason for that is China is a developing country, from what you see from western media and what you can see in the vlogs like this, the content only has fews decades's differences. Moral level is a luxury that based on material level, the poor place is hard to rise people with good manner, and the tourists from China from poor to rich, might just took 20 years, which means they don 't have enough time to be polite. Yet, still the moral level of this country is still developing, especially nearly ten years, the whole country got big boosted on that because of economic development and cultural renaissance( China has supper rich history on how to be polite to others, which is the core of the culture.--Look up Confucianism is you are interested.) Hence, the younger generation behave better at anywhere. Chinese people were spiting around in china back to about 15-20 years, but hardly to find one doing that nowadays, and it will be better since recent years the Chinese government is working on the cultural renaissance as I mentioned.
3. About foreigner can go everywhere: That's partly true, actually you can visit any province in China nowadays, but not include some religion controlled area such like sacred mountain in Tibet( even Chinese residents are allowed to visit there only in given months), no need to say the military restriction areas.
4. About paid by CCP: Consider visa free policies as the payment from CCP, for the coming years, there might be a whole bunch of business opportunities amount China and the visa free countries. if you believe all the travel blogs about China are paid to say so, you can easily break all the lies by just a ticket to China, China must be the the top five affordable country for travel around the world.
5. About eating dog: True, but only in couple cities with their tradition like Native American. You will not find dog meat unless you intend to search for that, and it's not cheap at all, most Chinese people didn't see dog meat in their entire life, worry about dog mea in street food is ridiculous. The only thing about food you need to be aware of is, DO NOT try cheap lambs, the meat might made from duck since duck is much cheaper. (lamb avg. $10/kg, meanwhile duck cost only $2/kg, some restaurants use duck meat to fake lamb especially for BBQ)
5. About China: China is not a great county, it has lots aspects waiting to be developed, but it's definitely worth to visit because the whole Chinese culture and social treat foreigners better than its citizens. Chinese are self-deprecating that foreigners are the first class, religious are the second class, women are the third class, dogs are the fourth class and men are the fifth class, foreigners really get lots of benefits. It's a problem need to be solved in China, but good for tourists anyway.
