- Welcome to our first day in China! As Americans, our view of China stretches from a modern cyberpunk dystopia to a falling power. So we decided to see how true any of that is. In this video we are going to be giving you our first impressions of Guangzhou China as we answer the question; what is China really like?
We start this vlog by getting some food at the airport before entering our first metro system in China. We took this metro to the East Guangzhou Railway station which was an epic underground mall system as well. We then exited the railway station to get our first view of Guangzhou.
Next, we were off to Huacheng Square to get a view of the epic Canton tower, one of the landmarks of the city. Althought the weather was gloomy and cold the night turned out well as the clouds cleared and the tower lit up for an epic view. We also got to explore the Mall of The World which was a massive underground complex that was located directly beneath the square. While in the mall we got ourselves some delicious Chinese food before heading back to our hotel and giving our final thoughts on the first day in Guangzhou and our final thoughts on china!

No, there are people in China who set up tents outside. Some people come from other places and don’t want to stay in expensive hotels or want to save money.
2008 First time I went to China (Beijing, Chongqing, Chengdu, Lanzhou) was absolutely mind blowing. Even back then it made the US look old dilapidated, dirty, crime infested, backwards.
I can only image what it’s like now.

After 2009 China has changed so much. The whole infrastructure is another level. Also the cities are now more clean and beautiful.
First time visiting in 2007,in chengdu,chongqing Beijing. Chengdu,they eat to much spicy food.
Big malls in big Chinese cities are usually connected to the metro. It’s for the convenience of the passengers.
Best thing of china is that there are no thugs, homeless, addicts, mentals, etc. To make you feel unsafe .

no thugs? we had a bad experience in a Beijing marketplace. Sadly, it ruined our vacation trip but I wouldn't make a big deal out of it on soc med, since I would hate to generalize. Our driver and guide treated us well tho.

@@aww7056 its an organized tour which doesn't require us to take the public transpo. everything is taken cared of since we have a guide, plus a driver that tours us around. The only instance we were left alone was in that marketplace where we were physically harassed by a furious seller for no reason. But again, that is why unlike the others, I would hate to generalize. I believe in the goodness of people regardless of race. However, one bad experience cannot be denied or forgotten, and doesn't change the fact that evil still exists everywhere.
China is safe, clean, and beautiful.

To be precise the native tongue of Hong Kong is not Cantonese. It is Hakka and its variants. If you have a time machine and dialed back two hundred years ago in Hong Kong and speak Cantonese no one will understand you. The reason Cantonese became the lingua franca of Hong Kong is because Cantonese and its variants (Shunde dialect is just Cantonese with an accent) is the language spoken around the region of Canton (Guangzhou) and since Guangzhou has been the capital of the Guangdong province and there are many different dialects spoken in the Guangdong province, the only way people in different part of Guangdong can communicate verbally is by Cantonese. Over the past hundreds of so years people from different parts of China migrate to Hong Kong and a lot of these people are from the Guangdong province and hence they use Cantonese as a mutually understandably language to communicate verbally. Over time Cantonese became the dominant language of Hong Kong.
As long as you have translation software, don’t be shy and just ask the waiters what their specialty dishes are. Generally, the best-selling dishes will not disappoint you. The same goes for when asking for directions. Young people on the roadside will usually patiently help you with directions. Have a nice trip in china!

Welcome to China! If you have time, welcome to Shenzhen. It is the most modern city in China and also the city with the most high-rise buildings in the world. Shenzhen is very close to Guangzhou, and it only takes half an hour to take the high-speed rail❤❤

If you want to have some future feeling travel, you could go around Nanshan district, which is a place seen as a tech and new district. There is Shenzhen University, and around it lies a lot of high tech or internet company like Tencent. Or you could go to place near the shore, such as Shenzhen Bay(where you could even see Hong Kong across the sea) I believe the comfortable environment and cozy vibe and the sea will make you feel ease. Maybe you want to visit some traditional places or have some good Cantonese food, then you can take an adventure in Futian District. Don't be afraid to look for good taste in narrow streets, and I have a good tip for you: Just check the car number plate of the cars parking in front of restaurants. If you see a restaurant with a lot of cars with number starting with 粤(which means Canton. I just assume that it's accessible for the guys who don't know Chinese character to just compare the shape to know if that's this character.🤣)E, 粤X, 粤Y. Trust me, because different letters mean the cars' owner come from different cities in Canton(GuangZhou), and the guys from E, X, Y know the taste the best. Relatively more advanced cities such as Shanghai and Shenzhen have a lot of subway lines and cover more areas. Of course, a large subway network also means that it can be complicated for you. But in these cities you are also more likely to meet people who speak English, and staff, volunteers or passers-by will be willing to help you. So maybe you can start your trip in these cities first. By the way, if you use iPhone, it will be easier to travel, apple map will be more accurate than Google map in China.

Christmas now are so commercial. CNY is more about connecting with Family. So most people went home. There's another 2 big holidays coming up.

25:36, I remember that was a outdoor stadium. The place you went to is Zhujiang New Town, definitely the iconic place to be in Guangzhou.
The pork-stuffed buns you had with the doughnut-like outer shell reminds me of Lugang Cafe's and TuanTuan's Snow Buns in the Philippines. You should try them if you will crave for them after you leave China.

Glad you enjoyed Guangzhou. When I arrived in 2004 there were only 2 subway lines. Line 3 opened soon after and it just keeps expanding. Very cool! The area where you experienced Mall of the World was a complete dump when I first got here. I used to take the bus through there and it was pretty much a shanty town with trash everywhere and decrepit buildings all around. Man, watching the changes to that area over the years and seeing how it all eventually turned out was quite amazing. And, yeah, the food here is incredible. Cheers!

The kind of cold in the south is called 'wet cold' in China. Because the air is really humid and makes people feel much colder than 'dry cold' in the north

Well the weather is called"hui nan tian" it means the cold air returns to southern ,always happen in this time, sometimes you can see the water is dripping from the indoor ceiling. This is because the air humidity is too high. In addition, it is still winter in China. Even if it is the south, it will be wet and cold. So many people said it's Magic attack, colder than minus 30 degrees in the north

Jackson was a fencer before becoming a singer. Hey guys! Love your videos! You two are charming! There are tons of people share your experience on Chinese social media and it went viral. You guys are so cute I had to log on UA-cam to subscribed! I am born and raised in Guangzhou and you guys can always find out interesting details in life which make me love my hometown more! There is some cultural stuff I would like to share so you may find your trip in China more interesting:
1. The sign "Young城Yeah市" is the same pronunciation with "羊城夜市" in Chinese, which means the Nighttime Street Market in the Goat City. Combined with the Chinese in the second line, it means the Nighttime Street Market light up Tianhe (it pronounce as "Tien Herr", which means the Milky Way) District. That's such a lovely pun but I never noticed it until you guys point it out!
2. Guangzhou is one of the largest city for migrant workers from all over the country and it's know for its kindness and embracement. So when the new year comes, people will go back to their hometown for reunion, which makes the city turn from extreme busy to a rare quietness.
3. McDonald's regular chips in China is also different from the ones in the US -- they are also seasoned -- try it next time.
4. The sweet eggs SpongeBob get in Walmart is make by a cooking method call "卤水". In Guangzhou, almost everything can be cooked that way and they are all delicious. You may also find some in restaurants.
5. Guangdong is a wholesale market for most of the goods across the country -- clothes and cloths, handbags, accessories, pens and notebooks, toys in Guangzhou and Electronics in Shenzhen, do come shopping again sometime, the scale and price of it all will surprise you.
6. The corn man hops up and down on the screen of Guangzhou metro is the head of train of the first metro in Guangzhou, which is yellow.
7.Burger is 汉堡 in Chinese and short for 堡, which can also translate into castle, that's interesting.
8. So glad you guys like the DimSum, it did take me 15 years to fade the love for Shrimp Dumplings and Sweet Pork Buns, and still love Milky Yellow Buns till today, so have some more if you get the chance. Also, different era in China have their unique foods, which can only be found the best in that area. Guangzhou people loves, like looooves food, picky with the taste too. So there are lots of delicious foods are brought to here such as 重庆火锅, but the best Chongqing Hotpot I had is still in Chongqing. And Guangzhou has its own traditional hotpot with no spice. BiangBiang noodles I believe would be the best in its hometown. So next time when you are in China, make sure you get the local specialties for such a short period of travel! Don't let the great food pass by! Also, a little tips for the great food, the most advertised one are commercial ones. The commercial ones are like 8/10 in China, not bad, if you have limited time, they are a good choice. Yet the best can only known by the locals and they need no advertisements to be packed with people. Ask some friends or post questions on the internet before hand if you would like to get the most great food. Rating app helps.
Love to see you guys in China again sometime, and for a longer period of time! There are astonishing nature and so many great food to experience.

I was in Guangzhou 6 months ago, I saw a ton of people everywhere. It really surprise me to see how empty the streets are. I took a taxy to that colorful skinny tower, could not get to the top because it required reservations. Every attraction in China requires reservations, remember that.
It’s chinese new year. Businesses are closed, people travel back to their hometowns. The big cities would be less busy compared to other times of the year.
Guangzhou used to call Canton. I am glad that you can try some Cantonese food by the end of the day. I am missing the dimsum as well

@@hyc1266 Wrong, Canton has always just meant Guangzhou, not Guangdong. It's a misconception that "ton" = "dong", there's no connection there. Peking = Beijing, Nanking = Nanjing, Canton = Guangzhou, Amoy=Xiamen, Macau = Aomen. Old romanization vs new Pinyin based romanization.

NAIXUE is more famous for its fruit tea, Heytea would have a relatively stronger taste but I guess u guys would prefer MIXUE and CHA BAI DAO and KFC bubble tea is good too😊😊

Guangzhou was referred to as Canton in the west for most of the last three centuries. It was for much of that time the only city where western ships could trade. It was where the events that led to the first Opium War took place.
