    NOTE: standing water ATTRACTS mosquitoes, so if you create such a bucket/container in your garden/yard, you will attract mosquitoes (to kill their larvae). However, if you have standing water nearby that you can't access to use the dunks there, creating the standing water area will let you eliminate many mosquitoes that would otherwise hatch in the inaccessible standing water.

    • @eleephant9726

      True. I had standing water and tossed mosquito dunk bits to kill the larvae. I would never set up a bucket as shown here. It's the same as a bug light. It will attract the pesky bugs.

    My uncle used to go catch tadpoles in spring to release them into his rainwater tanks. They'd completely get rid of the mosquito larvae for the whole summer, then he'd have a ton of frogs running around his fields for a while but they'd eventually migrate to the woods nearby. I remember as a kid it was so fascinating to see

    Omg wow, you just answered a mystery for me. Just bought a property and next to an old well pump is a big white tub of stinking rotting leaf water just like this one. Could never figure out why the owner had left it there and what it was for. I think you just figured it out. Thank you ma’am!!!

    • @GARDENING_foraging
      @GARDENING_foraging  22 дні тому

      it could also be just a tub left out, which filled with rain water, which over time will get green and or stinky if it's in the sun or leaves or other stuff gets inside. If there's a cork-looking rink floating in it though, it's the dunk then.

    1. Grab an opened jar/bowl and fill it halfway with salt & vinegar liquid
    2. Squirt a few drops of dish soap into the bowl/jar of water

    Obviously, you wouldn’t do this where there’s a chance toddlers or babies could fall in. Or if there’s a possibility of having house guests over who would bring their little one. I know of someone who was having a baby shower celebration at their house and someone brought their 2 year old. The older kids were playing with the little one and everyone was having a good time. People went in and out and suddenly the mother noticed the little one wasn’t near her or with the other kids. They said they brought him back to mom but mom was chatting and wasn’t notified they were bringing him back. They found him drowned in the backyard pool, which only takes a few minutes 😢 Please be careful with standing water.

    Here's an idea.... dump out the standing water. In areas that cannot be dumped pour a little dirty cooking oil on top of the water. This produces an oil slick that prevents the mosquito larvae from being able to breathe. No need to buy mosquito dunks just use dirty cooking oil or clean cooking oil or a little dirty motor oil. Stop wasting money.

    • @GARDENING_foraging
      @GARDENING_foraging  2 дні тому

      oil is harmful to soil microorganisms and as a result it has negative impact on the soil and surrounding plant growth. It can also potentially harm other wildlife.
      If one wants to save the money then dumping all standing water is the best solution. However, you can't dump standing water from an area that floods and keeps the water for long periods of time and pouring oil in such places is harmful for the environment and wildlife.

    • @John-B69692
      @John-B69692 2 дні тому

      @@GARDENING_foraging Actually a little oil is good. Oil is used as fertilizer in some places. Fertilizers are actually made from oil. I'm not talking about dumping five gallons.. only a few teaspoons or tablespoons. A few drops per square foot... Lol you don't understand the scientific method. You need a control to prove anything.

      The control part was the larvae in water without the dunks.

      @@jasmoniqueware6398I don't doubt that the dunk works but technically there should be at least another container containing the same dunk but without the bacterium that the dunk contains. This would rule out any other possibility of the dunk killing the mosquitoes and not the bacteria.
      There's probably something else I'm missing but at a minimum yeah.

      @@oopalonga the dunks are made WITH the bacteria as their only purpose is to kill the larvae so you cant get the same dunk without the bacteria.
