Great sharing Nate. Here in Melbourne Victoria Australia we mainly have grey slugs. Your videos have educated me well. I can confirm to your viewers that this solution works. I have sprayed my vegetable garden as late, or early, as midnight. I watched the slugs fall off the plants and disintegrate. Spray well into the night when the slugs are in full force. Doing this every 3rd night 3 times was all that was needed to continue growing food for the remainder of the season. Best wishes Jason from Melbourne Australia.
A lot of slugs in the garden this year! I use paper plates with a little compost on them and sprinkle on a little bit of Slugo . I then mist with water every evening. Seems to be working well! When finished l throw plates and compost in trash. This way I don’t get Slugo in into the soil. To much Slugo kills worms. 😎

BEER SUBSTITUTE for slug/snail bait: 1 C water, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp flour, 1/2 tsp yeast ... I leave out flour, works great. Thanks for the video, I needed a better container for the bait ... I look forward to getting the Beslans slug traps
The copper scrub sponges from Dollar Tree (or wherever) seem to help some. Unroll them and cut them into strips and wrap around the base of your plants. You will have to anchor them with something to keep them in position. Small sticks, short peices of thin metal rod, whatever. Hope this helps.
Thankyou Nate for more information to add to the slug decimation arsenal! I use the discard from my sour dough starter and it works brilliantly, just as good as beer and it's so much cheaper!!
Good harvest of leopard slugs man,keep them traps running all season,the little slugs didn't stop mowing here in the south of NZ,and it was like mini plagues of them.

Nate. The year I tried planting Chinese Cabbage: White cabbage butterflies were everywhere. We did not have wire and cloth for row covers. If I'd known we would have put them under covers that used for other plants. Live and learn.. We use coffee grounds and cleaned crushed eggshells for slugs and snails. We also have nesting birds that visis our garden most of the day. Hubby panted 3 Brussel Sprouts. We shall see what happens.
I can confirm that the traps work. For me they work on the small ones as well.

Using the slug traps but also using copper cleaning mesh puffs pulled apart & placed in a ring around the base of plant or in strips in a line. Slugs don't like the copper mesh & don't crawl over to get to the plants. With so many veg. & flowers I use everything I hear about. Thanks for your info & I'll try it as well.

Love these slug slaying tips, I used to do the beer method in the past, it’s definitely worth doing on a regular schedule visible damage or not, sort of like a recon exercise.
I grow my brassica’s in a frost cloth house, to protect them from the cabbage butterflies 100% effective. However I did have slug issues earlier in the season, which were really hitting the younger plants hard ! I went on a night hunt and got over 200 (hit ‘em all at once with boiling water, and fed em back to the plants !!)
As a random thought, I then tried sprinkling a ring of blood and bone, around the base of each plant. It was incredible, no more damage. Not sure if it deters them or kill’s them, but it worked for me.

I know you shouldn't use this on the plants under the sun but I grow in pots, and I'm not up late enough to spray at night, so I get up early every morning and spray around garden. They are usually climbing the walls and the last few days I haven't found any. I only having fruiting plants at the moment, but I'm about to transplant the melon into the garden so I hope this method continues to work. Thanks for sharing what you know. I've utilized several concoctions and am having good results in the garden. Would love recipes for knat, ants and these darn moles. Thanks!

Last year was so wet over here (pretty much the same apart from a couple of weeks - back to wet and wild again today) and it we had the march of the slugs. I had never seen so many in my life - they were everywhere. They marched over two plum trees and ate all the leaves (didn't touch the damson) which killed them. The ducks were delighted at first - but then they got picky and left the brown ones while chomping on the black ones. I haven't seen quite the number so far, but this year isn't done yet! Appreciate the tips very much, thank you. I think our slugs are connoisseurs of beer/lager/stout and ale. I've tried many brands but no good!
Nate, nice photo of the slug teeth. It helps to really set the severity of an infestation of these guys. They are relentless and you need to be too to get them under control.

Try blending a bunch of hot pepper with some water, like smoothy consistency, then filter it so that you can have just the juice. Spray the juice all over the plants in the afternoon when there is no more sun shining on them.
My grandfather was a farmer and this is what he did for pest management. He grew habaneros and datil just for this purpose. It helped tremendously with the corn worms not 100% but can’t imagine what it would’ve been like without it

found today by chance that spraying them with soap water takes care of them..
My grandad(in the 70's) used empty yoghurt cartons with lids and burnt holes near the top then buried them to just below the holes. He'd put barley beer in them and called them slug pubs😂. I'm sure it was used as an excuse to buy beer aswell 1 for him 1 for the slugs😂. Another method is put some thing down for the slugs to hide under, the idea being you know where they are, then go collect them during the day and dispose/dispatch them.
The first video I saw over here was on how to grow potatoes in plastic bags (like a Viking)… I stuck with it, and this is gold, a Viking horde.

Thanks Nate! I'm here with you in northern Indiana and see the slug damage, but haven't seen the slugs yet, I need to go out at night. I will be using this to save everything from my tender seedlings to my more mature plants. I love that you showed how some slugs want to enter Valhalla via beer overload and that others require a different approach! I wish you an abundant harvest!
Also love seeing the kitty! My new puppy is not the bunny deterrent I was hoping, she thinks they are friends. Slowly I am teaching her the way, but still wish I had cats still.
lol this cat is almost a dwarf cat and she doesn't really do anything besides dig in the beds and smash the young plants... but the mice and chipmunks must think she's a real cat because they have stayed far away which is great!!

Good show, cheers Nate. We have a product called 'nemaslug' over here which I find very effective. It's a slug infesting nematode, you can actually make your own if you can find infected slugs, they have a swolen mantle and you can see nematodes in the pneumostome with a good magnifying glass, collect the infected slugs and put them in shallow bowel of rainwater for a few days, then water the plants with the water, I dilute to the area I'm covering and apply in damp weather at night. This way you only have to buy the product once.
that's something I've heard and seen a few videos about but here I've never found a single "infected" slug and I've been looking for years!... I'll probably experiment around with purchasing the nematodes and see how it goes... thank you!
@@gardenlikeaviking The only place I've found infected slugs is under well rotted grass mulch in my 6.5 gallon potato tubs in the top 1/2" of soil, the nematodes are actually bacterial feeders which probably explains this, YT will delete my comment if I give a link so search for "Rae, R, Sheehy, L and McDonald-Howard, K (2023) Thirty years of slug
control using the parasitic nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita and beyond. Pest Management Science." They don't infect/kill all slugs as adults (see the table in the paper) It's not a complete solution but works to reduce numbers over a couple of seasons, I also use bits of wood for them to hide under in the beds to collect slugs, home made nematode soup is a bit hit n miss they have a very delcate life cycle, works better in cooler wet months, it's really difficult to give all the info/caveats in a YT comment!
@@gardenlikeaviking One vid I saw said to just collect slugs, that some will likely be infected, keep them live for a bit in the bucket, throw in some food, and allow time for infected slugs to infect the others. Kind of a Jadam nematode solution. My friend also used this solution as a mole repellent, poured down the holes.
Pepper and garlic liquid mix sprayed before bed working well here, and don't have a load of bodies on your conscious lol

Thanks for this video! I made the mistake of trying to watch it while eating breakfast. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the elain ingham/regenerative soil/etc idea that plants won't get eaten if they have all the nutrients and minerals and soil biology they need. I'm sure you've heard this? I've listened to a lot of podcasts about soil and I've heard multiple people (I'm thinking of John Kempf and Nigel Palmer) talking about how a balanced, thriving soil life and mineral balance for the plants will make them immune to pests. I've wondered if this is possible in the garden. I would love to know what you think/what your experience tells you.
I sprayed last night for the first time this year. Hopefully the grasshoppers will not be as bad this season.
I don't know if we've been lucky or if the birds nesting a few yards from my garden are eating any grasshoppers. we may have. I've seen videos where gardeners nail bird houses on posts around gardens edges for birds. Here baby sparrows are hopping around our lawn. The parents are in and out of our garden, pecking soil for minerals.
I even wash eggshells to get our protein. I air dry them, break them up and sprinkle on ground hoping to keep the birds coming back every year. For the garden, I crush the shells. Snails and slugs don't like sharp soil and maybe the birds are getting too. One year we had quite a few of the white cabbage butterflies and my chineese cabbage failed.
Brussel Sprouts had few holes but not the best they could be. I noticest that Ct. is not killing weeds like they used to. Hopefully more good guy insects are suviving. Thanks. Hopefully this helps someone.
unfortunately this solution will not work on any hard bodied creature such as grasshoppers

Hi nate. Here in england snails and slugs are the most hated pest! And it has been a very wet spring as well! Beer traps never worked for me. What I do is to create a dump environment where they can hide and then I got them and put on a bucket with water and salt. I just done JWA and JHS with garlic and pepper. Will try those with the powder. Cheers

Here are links to the Viking's recipes on how to make these.
The wetting agent is used to coat the plant with whatever you are spraying and can also be used as soap. If you don't have JWA, you can use Dr. Brommers (SP?) soap but JWA is better. JHS is what you use as a natural pesticide. I hope this helps.
Lye is used to make old school pretzels and some kinds of bagels, so you have probably eaten NaOH before, it is sold as “food-grade” for a reason. I used the sodium hydroxide with Jadam wetting agent and it works, but only if you hit the slugs directly with the solution. It didn’t seem to work on snails though in my area. And it did bother the earthworms. Some came out of the ground while I was spraying the slugs and some got hurt unfortunately. Stomping the ground as you suggested didn’t seem to make them burrow into the soil at all.

Don't forget eye protection, rubber gloves, long sleeves and long pants when handling sodium (or potassium) hydroxide (lye). Alkali burns can severely injure you!

This may be my 3rd year without a cucumber... they've decimated 50ish cuke vines (multiple succession plantings). Not giving up though... Have more ready to go out. I gave up with garlic after I'd gone through 56 heads of garlic that shoulda been cooked 😢. The leopards were just crawling over the slug solution 5 minutes after a drench. I need to increase my beer traps.

I put out 2 containers last night with yeast/sugar/flour solution. And this morning I got 7 leopard slugs in those containers from my tomato patch. I was very surprised. Because of the flour, the solution spoil quickly. So next I am going to try using yeast/sugar and a little bit of apple cider vinegar. I think it should keep longer, and attract more slugs.
A friend of mine told me about "slug soup" which her mother had told her about many years ago. First I thought it was an old wives tale, since it came from and old wife, but... It turns out there may be something to it. Recently I came across a video explaining about a nematode that attacks slugs and can be derived and distributed by collecting the slugs and creating a solution which can be put back into the soil. "Nematode slug control" as a YT search will probably bring up a few videos on this.
They are attracted to the yeast in the beer. I can tell you that definitively. I supplement my duck feed with nutritional yeast and they are SUPER attracted to their food dishes (so I suspend them in the air).
hey nate. i just found your channel and i think you've got one of the best gardening channels out there. however, I'd love to find someone who lives in a similar climate to mine. so much stuff out there i cant relate to or just wouldnt work for me. i live in Northern New Mexico. we have very long very cold winters and often brutal sun exposure i n the short summer. extreme wind is common and the earth tends to be very powdery and sandy. perfect for tumbleweed farmers lol. the elevation is right around 7500 ft. is there anyone out there with a garden like this? help!!

Heyo. This time I dont have negativity to bring today my friend! Lol. Oregon sate university has an amazing soil science program here that I never got to attend due to being terrible at math but i still follow them as I try to learn how to garden and they made a neat discovery that is kind of blowing things up out here in the west coast. Its the yeast and sugar that the slugs want in the beer so they basically made a bread starter. Warm water, tablespoon of yeast, and sugar. Let it start that proofing process where the yeast activates and becomes bubbly. What they are finding is that the activated yeast that is still fermenting compared to the deactivated/finished yeast in a beer is that the slugs love both but they are going INSANE for the active/live version and its cheaper and easier to acquire and spares you the shame of buying a budweiser. lol I tried it with limited success. Caught a bunch of flies... But I didnt bury it in the ground. I didnt think that made sense because the slugs go up the sides o my fabric pots so why wouldnt they go up a plastic container to get the beer? Ill try it again. OSU and the other gardeners have all had luck way better than beer so I know its something im doing.
I don’t think it’s you I have tried the beer method bought the proper traps and used beer and buried in the ground as per instructions absolutely nothing nada. I did once try putting instant coffee on a slug climbing up my window it fell onto the floor but when I went to check to see what happened to it a couple of minutes later it had disappeared. Maybe a bird ate it who knows but I will experiment with spray and different ways of applying it 😊
Thanks Nate, every year my biggest problem was always slugs combined with the sky spraying blocking out the sun, I used beer traps before but nowhere near enough of them, this year I put them in every bed which has made an incredible difference, combined with your slug solution they're practically non existent, minor damage here and there compared to nearly a total wipeout, skies are still sprayed but things are definitely a lot better this year, its soul destroying when you're doing everything right and those slimy wee parasites are ruining all your efforts. I will have some fish hydrolysate ready in a couple of weeks, I suppose using LAB or other biology the JWA and lye would destroy it.

A quick cheep alternative to the trap is, can of beer drink most of it and then lay the can wit h remaining beer in the garden.
I live on the big Island Hawaii. We have a real problem with slugs and snails.we have the big shelled snails here as well. Besides them eating your plants they carry the rat lung disease . So eating raw vegetables like lettuce or carrots or big leafy greens have the potential to destroy your health. So we have to be extra vigilant when it comes to slugs and snails. I use beer traps and keep the vegetables off the ground on raised beds and tables. I have 1 1/2" gravel around the tables and raised beds . I make sure there is nothing they can hide under.i make a bleach solution and spray them when I see them out in the open. The fear of rat lung disease keeps many from even trying to grow a garden...it's a real struggle. I will be making your solution to add to the arsenal
What about earthworms and this solution? Does it harm them as well? I have clay soil and an INSANE amount of earthworms chill out on the surface at night.
Nate, my friend... you broke my heart with the information about leopard slugs 😭. I have been taking care of them like my PETS these past 2 years - they even come to eat my cats dry cat food and I let them! Some of them are 15-20cm big! *heartbroken*

Save your beer money for yourself and use yeast/flour/sugar solution instead for traps.
Also, Nate, you should use measurements by weight, especially for NaOH, which is hydrophilic and also comes in different forms like granular or flake thus affecting the volume measurement. I believe Jadam solution is 10 to 15 grams per gallon.

I am a bit uncomfortable spraying, but that means I am using (because I have to) a headlamp, gloves and a bucket to collect the slugs at night, and then I move them to a better world.
Edit: My mother just texted me that she collected 1800 (no typo) slugs in her garden yesterday evening.😨 (northern Germany, Zone 7)

Wonder if activating bread rising yeast with sugar and warm water, then putting in trap would take the place of beer?
It does work !I mix 2 teaspoons of yeast with a tablespoon of sugar and teaspoon of flour into 1 and a half pints of warm water in a jug and half fill my yogurt pots every second night ,it's been attracting all sorts of slugs and snails here in West Scotland

Yes! In the locations they naturally live,
(Which is not everywhere across our nation) their populations are dropping dramatically, and are expected to be extinct in the span of our lifetime!
EXCTINCT!!!
100% G.O.N.E.
And not just in the U.S.
This includes all the other countries on our great globe too.
It's all very sad to me.
And why???
All because of humans.
The problems we cause are directly the reason.
There's just no denying it.
I can't imagine my childhood without them!

It's really hard for me to just sit and watch their numbers decline right in front of me, without saying anything.
Which of coarse, is why I pop in a little bit of awareness everywhere I can!!

you may want to look into it?
Here's a little bit of info:
Firefly adults are actually beetles.
Firefly larvae spend around 2 years living in the mulch layer,
eating the soft bodied pests.
Snails & Slugs are their FAVORITE meals!
They would really LOVE those little grey slugs you were talking about!!
And if there were a large firefly larvae population, they would even be able to handle those giant slugs you've got!!
They'd literally be ALL OVER THEM!!!
When the larvae graduate to adulthood, they only live 3-4 weeks as the firefly we all know, and love.
But none of them can tolerate man made toxins.
Especially in the mulch piles!
I don't know if any damage would occur from natural remedies like yours?
Maybe none?
But I wouldn't want to experiment with the few I've got left around me!
Here's a little back story of my own experience:
Thanks to ONE neighbor
(it only took ONE PERSON)
who spread pesticides all over
HIS OWN YARD
while trying to control fleas from his dogs.
It doesn't rain much here in the Summer, so I guess he thought the pesticides would diminish pretty quickly?
Wrong!!!
They did not.
That was 6 years ago when that
ONE GUY put out the pesticides.
And of coarse, eventually the rain DID carry the pesticides from his yard,
and into the small park we all live next to.
Luckily for our park,
that guy has moved away.
And a good family who is more nature-minded moved in.
We DID have THOUSANDS of fireflies before THAT ONE incident.
I know because my own children played with them every year of their youth.
But the next Summer after
"the pesticide incident" the population of fireflies had diminished drastically.
And every year SINCE,
their numbers just keep going down!
Until we had ALMOST ZERO fireflies!!
Even 5 years later, that one spraying of pesticides is STILL killing the insect populations in our park.
All from just ONE person's ignorance.
The damage just happened so fast!!
Luckily, I finally brought in a few truckloads of woodchips just 18 months ago.
I put them on my property where the runoff from the neighbor's pesticide can't get to it.
And finally, as early as THIS Summer,
we're already seeing the firefly numbers go up!!
We have more than one variety of firefly here in Texas, and some spend only one year as larvae, which is why we are able to see a semi-quick increase.
Unfortunately,
it's still pretty easy to count them...
Last Summer there were less than one dozen.
Some evenings I would only see one or two!!
This year,
we have THREE TIMES that many!!
THREE DOZEN FIREFLIES!!!
It doesn't sound like much, I know!
But to me, it feels like a HUGE victory!!!
Especially when I think of what I'll (hopefully) be seeing next year!
So you see,
We don't have ANY to spare!
It's not JUST happening in my neighborhood.
This same thing is happening all over the world, along with loss of habitat.
And there's a few other reasons too, such as light pollution, moving cars at night - the headlights act as a magnet for male fireflies looking for a mate, etc...
Their demise is directly related to our ignorance!!
The fireflies all over the world
NEED OUR HELP -
IF they're going to survive.
Right now, as a species,
it's NOT looking like they will...
They NEED all the help they can get!!!

Maybe even use your platform to help create awareness to all your viewers??
The thing is,
it's just so EASY to save them!!
CLEAN MULCH!!!
With more & more gardeners out there since the pandemic, I feel like it's something they should know.
We humans,
we make dumb decisions,
which totally wipe out entire species.
And with fireflies, (just to mention 1)
it happens so fast!
I'll miss them GREATLY
when they're gone...

@@gardengatesopen Perhaps the JMS solution might mitigate the pesticide?? I get on the JADAM meetings once a month with Youngsung Cho.(Sp?). He says that the microorganisms in JMS can take care of a lot of pesticides and herbicides with time.

those slugs are poisoned by caffeine, so make a yerba mate or coffee brew and use it to spray the ground. Also sprinkle ash, slugs hate it.
I have been waiting for this... My understanding is that the slugs are drawn to the yeast, not necessarily the alcohol of the beer. So I am going to try to make a yeast solution (as in making bread) since I don't have beer. Nate, why did you lay all the leopard slugs to dry? Just to show? Are they dead or just drunk?
yes I also want to see if it can be done without the beer as I don't even like to buy it!... I am going to try a yeast solution soon to see if it works the same... I laid them out strictly for the purpose of the video and otherwise would just throw them onto the compost pile
I have a problem with something probably a fruit fly damaging my pumpkin small fruits. Tomatoes also get worms, how to protect the fruits themselves from such waste of efforts,please?

Another Melbourne guy here. The beer traps work for snails really well. I don't use beer, just a sugar water mix with a little bread yeast.
Does the caustic soda (NaOH) at that concentration not cause any leaf burn? I'd be a bit scared to spray anything delicate.
at that concentration is causes zero burn whatsoever as long as you spray at night only ... make sure it comes in direct contact with the slugs and snails!!

Lift up your containers and look around. They like to hide underneath the plant pots.
I sprayed this on the cabbage worms but I didn't see them melt. They continued crawling for a while. I also didn't notice the solution get hot when adding the lye. It's 99% sodium hydroxide. Do you think it's still effective?
Will potassium hydroxide work instead of sodium? It is what I have on hand haha
I'm in Washington state, leopard slugs are horrible here, and they completely ignore beer...

I have these traps and used them throughout spring. They got lots of slugs but I fear they were attracting all the neighbours slugs in also
Could the slug solution be affecting the groth of my emerging/ developing seedlings? Some are coming up quite deformed. When i get a chance (hopefully this weekend) ill put some pictures up on the discord.
Some of my seedlings were coming up deformed because I didn't store the seeds properly. I am replacing all of the seeds.
