Yes sir you need bats! I'm not even kidding. I visited my buddy, we live in South Florida, and he bought a place in a cypress swamp. Do I need to explain Cyprus swamps and mosquitoes? Lol I recall it was about 11:30 at night and we were standing outside talking, and it was that kind of pitch dark, where you can barely see the other person's in front of you. I thought it was interesting that after standing outside for 20 minutes I had not felt a single mosquito bite. I made comment of this and he said oh it's because of the bats. I said what He said my dad built a bat house, and bats will naturally live in it because it's conducive to what they like and each bat at night feeds on mosquitoes and can eat something like 600 per hour. So he said you will never get bitten by a mosquito on our property because the bats are literally flying around us right now eating all of them. And I thought he was pulling my leg, but he flashed his flashlight real quick and you saw tons of bats silently flying around us. It's one of the only times I've ever been in a swamp and not been bitten by mosquitoes. However, if you're looking for a great mosquito repellent, look no further than the lemon eucalyptus oil. That's not a combination. That's a plant called the lemon eucalyptus plant and you need its essential oil. Cambridge University did a study with deet that mosquito repellent that works very well but gives you cancer and this natural oil was in discernible from the performance of DEET but does not have any side effects like that chemical does. This is just a natural oil that you can rub on yourself, or put it in a carrier and spray it. I do think a couple of companies make the oil in an actual spray bottle repellent now
There are two methods you didn't mention: One is to deliberately trap them in standing water in black buckets placed in the shade where you've put a mosquito dunk. Mosquitos are apparently attracted to dark areas, where they seek refuge. They will then find the water, and the mosquito dunks will kill their larvae. Black buckets work the best for this. The second is to put some bug screen mesh on a box fan or some other heavy duty fan, and turn the fan on high, placing it where mosquitos frequent. Mosquitos are weak at flying, and they naturally get entrained in the flow of air from a powerful fan. The fan will pull them against the bug screen which they can't get off of due to being weak at flying. There, on the screen, they will dehydrate to death with the constant air flow. Any that are still alive can be easily killed with a spray of rubbing alcohol. Since one of these fans essentially filters the air through the screen, and can circulate thousands of cubic feet per hour, such a system essentially filters mosquitos out of that volume of air.
What finally worked for me was using the mosquito dunks in what I call mosquito traps. I take 5 gallon buckets and fill them about a third full with water. I throw in a few leaves to recreate a natural water collection area and then I put in a piece of the mosquito dunk. I actually WANT the mosquitoes to find these traps and use them to lay their eggs. So I place them all over the yard wherever I have noticed collections of mosquitoes. After about a couple of weeks, you will notice that your mosquito population has plummeted! I have only been bit by one mosquito this year, and I have never used any repellent spray. This breaks their life cycle. After the adults lay their eggs, the eggs die and soon after the adults die as well. Pretty soon, no more mosquito population!
ima try this trick myself!! i use my fogger use repellent coils but works just for a few minutes mosquito population its out of control this year in Los Angeles!!! we had a lot of rain so im sure there is a lot of standing water everywhere still!! plus my backyard its full of fruiting trees so they have the perfect place to rest!!
The dunks are great! I got a tip from another creator that worked so well and so I pass it on. Get three or four pails and fill 1/3 of the way with water, add a dunks and place throughout your yard. In 5 to 10 days misquotes will be gone. Adults will have lived their lifecycle, laid eggs that the dunks with kill. Once you’ve broken their lifecycle you’ll be free of them.
I'm surprised this would work, because standing water should attract new mosquitoes I would think?? And so I would think they would still hang out around your property because you have provided them that water to lay their eggs. Sure they will not propagate anymore, so I can see the efficacy there, but it seems this would keep attracting new mosquitoes from neighboring areas. Thoughts?? I have many neighbors in very close proximity, so I think it would be even worse for someone such as myself, no?
As a former pest control technician that specialized in mosquitos, this is a very informative video. I just bought that leaf blower attachment, I'm excited to use it, never realized how spoiled I was when I had my professional gear, carrying around a 5 gallon sprayer can get heavy at times. Also OneGuard is a great insect growth regulator and knockdown formula for up to 45 days of protection, it's what I use in Houston and it works every time.
Would OneGuard work well for little gnats in my yard? I don’t have a huge mosquito problem, but the little tiny flies (gnats, I think) are really a problem for me. I’m in the mid-Atlantic, if it matters.
@shawn1869 I did, it does burn to get it on your skin. Always blow with the wind not against and wear long sleeves and pants plus respirator when applying. I can't say I do it but it's proper protocol. I usually get it done real quick then take a shower with dawn immediately but that's just bc I've lived through the burning sensation it can cause and I'm not looking to revisit those memories in 100+ degree heat.
@@shawn1869 Depends on what you are spraying. There are some pest control chemicals that can be really dangerous if gotten on skin (like head to the ER and get a counter-shot dangerous). Most of the commercial stuff like Cutter's Lawn Bug control and others are pretty mild pest controls that if gotten on your skin won't send you to the ER but should be washed off as soon as possible with something like Dawn. When in doubt, always cover up and always mask up.
I followed your advise a year ago and bought my own Stihl sprayer for mosquitoes and ticks using Demand CS. It had already paid for itself spraying my 2 acres along with my daughters and niece’s home. Everyone is happy with the results and I only spend about $80 a season. I watched this video as a recap , I value your advise. Thanks!
I really appreciate that, for a larger space that setup can't be beat. I am hearing now pros are charging $80 per month for spraying and at 6 months a year thats crazy. Glad to hear its working out so well
@@SilverCymbal Our minimum is 85 now, in a relatively low cost of living area. Our branch handles about 800 mosquito customers a year and we're trying to get it to 1000. The biggest cost, as with all pest control, is liability. We kill a koi pond about every other year - accidentally of course - and one time that happened we ended up paying out 10k. Apparently he had the rarest breed of koi that were decades old. I agree that the profits seem great, and the products are a lot safer now than they used to be, but never forget it's a poison and the label is the law. Penalties range from fines to, if you're unlicensed, prison time.

Great vid. We have used sprayer with mild soap water. Spraying lawns and any bushes etc. seem to have worked. The concept i have been told is that mosquitoes land in those areas for rest and get soap on them. They cant land on water after that since soap disturbs water surface tension, so they cant lay eggs. Just reapply after rains. We reapply weekly.
fourth method, totally free: put out a trough which encourages mosquitoes to lay - then empty it out every three days to kill all the larvae, refill to encourage more laying, empty out in three days... If you are going away on holiday put a dunkin donut in it to get them with the bacteria, or just leave it empty. Fifth method: add goldfish to the pond, they LOVE mosquito larvae
You said to mention if we have a way to make this better. For years now I have been adding a tire valve to my manual pump sprayers so that I can quickly recharge the pressure with my air compressor. A 1/2" drill bit is perfect. A common tire valve and some string to fish the valve through the hole. A pair of channel locks works well to get it locked into place but I just bought a tool kit for doing this from Amazon for $10 and it came with valves, the tool to screw onto the valve and a stem tool. A small amount of dish soap or any lubricant you are comfortable with can make it a bit easier. I just started treating the threads of the pump insert hoping to keep it from getting stuck as they always do for me. With the sprayer you showed it has an overpressure valve so I just use my air compressor to add air until the valve starts to release. I then have maximum pressure that's safe. In the past I have added an inexpensive pressure gauge by drilling an additional hole and screwing the gauge in but personally I'm confident with knowing how much air to put in the one I have that does not have the release valve. A powered sprayer would be great but they come at a great cost. We spray a couple of organic liquids on our garden; Neem oil, and Spinosad, and it's convenient to have a sprayer for each one with the tire valve for quick recharge. With our garden size we would need to pump it manually three or four times per use. I'm confident you could perfect this method in a video if you wanted to. As far as I can recall I thought of this idea on my own. I know I've never seen it in a video but I haven't specifically looked for a video either. Nice job on this video as always.
I have a couple tips/ways that might be helpful for some people - 1) you can attract dragonflies, bats and/or the many types of birds that feed on mosquitos 2) you can plant some of the many different types of plants that repel mosquitoes (catnip, mint, sage, etc) personally I'm partial to attracting the dragonflies and birds - we love watching them fly around

Few years back, when I had a lawn, we used to spray concentrated garlic for Mosquitoes and Ticks. Worked pretty well too. Smelled like a restaurant for a few days but hey, no bugs.

the other day I took my small sprayer with neem oil in it and just pointed it at the end of my (also EGO) blower and it worked awesome. I had seen that attachment and was considering it, but decided to give this a try for my sunflowers. Worked awesome.

@@simd510 for mosquitoes I did mix of Demand CS, Talak and Tekko Pro. It definitely helped, but it did not eradicated mosquitos completely. Also I don’t think spraying once a month is sufficient.
I bought a STIHL backpack sprayer, brand new, for $450 and cannoned my area in Bifenthrin. Insane results. It went from bugs so thick you would inhale them to being dead quiet. I avoided any flowering bushes and still see bumble bees, and dragonflies. Game changer.
If you have items that hold water like a couple of extra spare tires or something to heavy or awkward to empty the water from, just give it a squirt of Dawn dish washing liquid. It will kill any larva already swimming in the water. Even better, female mosquitoes actually land on the water to lay their eggs. The soap reduces surface tension of the water so instead of standing on the water and laying her eggs, the female mosquito instantly sinks and drowns. I don't use exact measurements myself, I just walk the yard with the Dawn bottle and give a squeeze into any mosquito breeders I find, but a tablespoon per estimated gallon of water should be more than enough.
I bought into the Mosquito Sniper system awhile ago and it's fantastic! I use it with my Greenworks blower and Greenworks battery powered backpack sprayer. The battery backpack makes all the difference. No need to pump and you can easily switch between hands for the blower when it starts to get a little tiring. The people at Mosquito Sniper are fantastic. Their customer service is exceptional and fast. I can't recommend enough. Previous years I was spending over $1k to get the exact same treatment that I can do for less than $15 per treatment now. Ticks were a huge issue in our yard and that is no longer the case.
THIS IS AWESOME! I could see me mounting this system on my push blower (which not is converted to mount on my tractor). I can just fill the 4 gallon tank with the chems, turn on the electric pump, and drive the gas blower around the property. Would save thousands and most likely be more affective than any other option. You'd da man for showing this stuff! Thanks.

I would recommend a backpack style sprayer; this allows for not only more product to use at once, but you can pump it with one hand while you're blowing with the other, and don't have to stop to pump.
This is some great information. I've also been using the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator and it's been rather effective. Fill the tube with some warm water and hang it on the north end of a tree. I've got a pond in my back yard, so I hang them around the corners of my back yard. It significantly reduced the population to where I didn't need to apply deet anymore.
Mosquito dunks work great. Just read the Amazon reviews. Mine are kept in the garage and work fine. A couple aluminum baking pans with dirty water and a quarter donut and in a couple/ few weeks pretty clear of mosquitos. Also, big box stores sell a hose attachment to spray mosquito killer in damp/ shaded lawn areas that also works well for me, no kids or pets in those areas.

Same. Some of the lower price versions work pretty good, too. But Demand is the only one we'll use in the house. Make sure you add an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) to get even more extended coverage.
Useful thanks. Just a reminder that we humans & our household pets bring them indoors on our clothing & hair. Even bringing laundry in that has been hanging outdoors & forgetting to shake it first can be a real pain.
Incense is a good way to screen in an area, particularly ones that use charcoal instead of mako powder. Placed low every 3-5 feet around the perimeter of a deck or patio and maybe one under the person who gets bitten the most will keep them at bay. It is also helpful to plant sweet allysum and other garden companion plants that attract hoverflies, mud dauber and other predatory insects that will eat the mosquitoes. Lastly, put out houses and roots for bluebirds, swifts, swallows and bats. They are all insectivores that feed at different times of day.
I have a dynatrap bug zapper which I picked up at costco. I put it near an easement on our property and it seems to keep those pesky bugs away. It's nice not having to use any chemicals and all I have to do is empty the trap every few weeks.
I personally bought 10 5 gallon sized BLACK buckets with lids, cut a hole in the lids that goes all the way to the brim, put a netting (1 inch squares) between the bucket and lid to prevent my cat drinking the water, filled the buckets with water and added mosquito bits/dunks. I then placed the buckets in cool shady areas with vegetation around the perimeter of my entire property. I have checked on the buckets and can see mosquito larva which is good news. Although there are still mosquitoes, it’s noticeably better than previous years and we’ve had a ton of rain the past 2 weeks.
bear532, great idea to "cut a hole in the lids that goes all the way to the brim, put a netting (1 inch squares) between the bucket and lid to” keep animals for from falling into or drinking the water. I also like the idea of using hardware cloth instead of netting but the lid "circle” may not fit on with this.

Excellent, just ordered off Amazon. Had a nasty flea infestation last summer from a skunk family living under my shed. Never have a I dealt with anything like that. This should prepare me for battle the next time.
I started purposely leaving standing water with those dunks... Works wonders. a bucket full of larvae died overnight with a handful of the grain dunks... added them to my pond filter, killed the ones hiding in there. works wonders
In addition to what you suggest, how about providing water vessels in areas around the house to attract mosquitoes to lay eggs in them? Just remember to check and empty them out when you see the larvae in them, and refill them again.
Another trick to use is a plastic kiddie pool with an inch of water, mix in a half cup of dish soap and mix it up really good, then put a layer of 1/2" hardware cloth over the top to keep birds and bees out. Mosquitoes will pass through the hardware cloth, try to land on the water to lay their eggs, but the dish soap destroys the surface tension so the mosquito can't land. They just sink and die. Fill it back up with the hose every couple days as needed, dump it out and hose off the lawn if it gets gross.
Are these chemicals harmful to other insects besides mosquitos? I really dobt want to hamr the polinators as a have a vegetable garden and fruit trees.
I've always had great luck with the Cutter stuff that just hooks up to your hose. But I do a double application of it to really make sure that nothing is living on or near my lawn lol
I read that you can use those donuts plus a couple buckets of water around the outside of your home and they mosquitos lay their eggs there so it eliminates them. never tried it though.
We had the buckets out with the donuts. Unfortunately we found 2 dead chipmunks in one of the buckets. 😪 No more buckets here. If you use them make sure the small animals can get out.
@@stephenbadamo130 Thanks for the warning, Stephen. People can also consider covering the top of the bucket with chicken wire or hardware cloth, etc.. Of course, the wire needs to be wired onto the bucket in a way so that animals cannot remove it but easy enough for the bucket owner to remove, if needed.
I've been doing this for about 4-5 years and regardless of brand you need three treatments to make this work: a knockdown agent (for immediate relief if you have existing issues); a longer-term residual preferably micro-bead based; and an insect growth regulator. You can usually mix them together. The knockdown is obvious. The residual (something like Demand CS) can give a few weeks of coverage to extend the knockdown; and the IGR won't kill anything but will stop new hatchlings before they become a problem. Spray the shaded brush and trees in the heat and sun, because the mosquitos will be hiding in the trees when it's hot. You'll get better knockdown. Get grass/brush pile areas to slow fly growth. IGR is the key here. Add Permethrin SFR if you have ticks, and get back into those trees. Spray from waist/shoulder height down to the ground. Look for animal trails and get those good. Keep all this stuff away from open water, and wear protection. Full face mask, full sleeves and gloves. I have a Stihl gas backpack sprayer, and when fully kitted out the kids say I look like a ghostbuster. It's heavy, hot work, but worth it. Spray day for me is a full workout day.
According to Gerry Baker America's Master Gardiner Spray all the bushes in the area and lawn with Lemon scented dish soap. All the plants and lawn will love it. It lasts for 48 hours.
I started taping my sprayer boom nozzle to my blower 20 plus years ago. I can blow pesticide up under my trees 25 feet . The wind flips the leaves over and over to coat everything.

Another mosquito control method is to pour baby oil onto water surfaces. Just a little bit is needed. It disturbs the surface tension of the water which is critical to the larvae development.

I love learning about mosquitoes because I hate them to hell. TO HELL I TELL YOU!!! I enjoy learning all of these methods and I just installed the Mist-Pro on my blower and tested it. Going to be spraying the Paul Harvey Mix first.
Cut you grass lower, mosquitos will hide near the root system of tall grass. I reduced my mow height from 4 -1/4 in. to 3-1/4 in. and I noticed less mosquitos near my deck. Also, water management drain you gutters to a sunny location in the yard if possible.
throwing talstar p with a blower and no mask is wild to me, every single time I use that stuff even with a mask on my mouth tingles, that stuff is effective and powerful at 1oz per gal
If you live in area with extreme temperatures it’s more effective to spray late in the evening so the spray doesn’t dry to fast also check into insect growth regulators to help break breeding cycles for longer lasting insects control
I just subscribed thanks for the video. I enjoyed seeing how your mounting your other antennas on the Ham Radio tower and now you can easily put a Yagi or a dipole on there and listen to amateur radio stations without a license. You might really enjoy that.
There is also a propane fogger that has a tank that allows you to trigger pump insecticide through a coiled steel tube that passes thrifty the flame and vaporizes the insecticide into a fog. I used to spray my townhouse"s tiny Georgetown garden patio area. It's great for getting into tight spaces and underneath decking or the a.c. compressor, etc. Then I would throw the mosquito bits version of this around the beds and in the basement window wells, around and in gutters, downspouts, etc. And lastly to keep the ants at bay I would sprinkle a powdered mix of sugar and borax around the perimeter of my house, windows, doors, around the garbage cans, near term back gate, and all around the perimeter of the foundation inside in the basement. I wasn't a particularly fastidious housekeeper but I rarely had insects or ants around.
... Oh yeah ... I would also use a hose sprayer to douse the lawn, shrubs, exterior of the house and everything in the backyard with permethrin once a month every spring and summer.
I do the dunks and bits in buckets and pails around the home but also after lots of rain if I get them around my back patio I grill something on my grill with some hard wood and the smoke seems to run them out of the area. The dunks seem to do 90% of the work.
I've had incredible luck just providing more plants for dragonflies to thrive. IF you can get dragonflies to thrive and attract them to your yard then your mosquito problems will be behind you without any work. This is good too if there's an affordable all natural solution to pour into it!
Dragonflies hunt mosquitos, wonder if there's a kit to raise some as they can decimate a mosquito population very quickly. They tend to really only show up towards the end of the summer, but I saw one just the other day, very very early in the season for western PA

Love mine. ROI is within the first year and I get to apply when I want to unlike a service. That nozzle end is much different than mine though. Is that new?
My ROI was two treatments (4-5 years ago), compared to the service we were paying. I use less chemical and get better results. Of course, the service would be in and out in 15 minutes. I take several hours but hit a more diverse area. Those guys just hit the easy edges of the woods. I get back into that stuff.
Dunks don't work for me. Tried for years. Instead, I did a test with Dawn dish soap and that worked. So for now, I'm using Dawn dish soap in standing pools around my property that aren't immediately natural. Otherwise, flip over or drain standing water.
What about mosquitoes that love hanging around doors? Is there something I can treat the back of my house with that will keep all mosquitoes away so they stop hanging around the door area, or will any mosquito pesticide work and last, being sprayed on plastic, wood, etc?
Demand-CS or a generic version will work there because it has a high residual. Cheaper alternative is Permethrin SFR but it has a lower residual. Permethrin has some repellent qualities, but it's real value is killing them. So don't over apply or you'll scare them off. Both can be mixed in a spray bottle and applied by hand, but don't leave either in the bottle long. Use it all then clean it out. Do not use near water where fish live.
Oh man, Talstar P (bifenthrin) is super toxic. Dunno about you but when I'm using my backpack sprayer, I suit up with my muck boots, nitrile gloves, coveralls, goggles & respirator.
Well it’s a Likely Carcinogen, Technically the EPA label only requires long sleeves and gloves, and eye protection. Though I don’t blame you about the respirator, better safe then sorry…
Same. Full face respirator for me, long sleeves, etc. Kids have to be gone for the day. But they see me suit up before they leave, and say I look like a Ghostbuster (I have a big Stihl gas powered sprayer). It gets heavy and hot those days. But worth it.
I have a question. I have a garden with veggies and fruits I grow. Will spraying around or on the plants be harmful to harvest and eat them later? I've tried everything to try to minimize mosquitoes and nothing has seemed to work..thanks for the info
#2 poisions mammals (including housepets) as well as mosquitos. #3 poisions insects other than mosquitos. Just use a safe repellant, and scape your land to encouage a healthy population of Dragonflies, Birds, Bats, and Frogs. Planting any species of Allium near your home and sitting areas helps as well.
Mosquito dunks will NOT poison any animals or fish. There is NO poison in it at all. It contains a bacterium that only eats mosquito larvae--nothing else.

Cambridge University did a study with deet that mosquito repellent that works very well but gives you cancer and this natural oil was in discernible from the performance of DEET but does not have any side effects like that chemical does. This is just a natural oil that you can rub on yourself, or put it in a carrier and spray it.
I do think a couple of companies make the oil in an actual spray bottle repellent now

There are two methods you didn't mention:
One is to deliberately trap them in standing water in black buckets placed in the shade where you've put a mosquito dunk. Mosquitos are apparently attracted to dark areas, where they seek refuge. They will then find the water, and the mosquito dunks will kill their larvae. Black buckets work the best for this.
The second is to put some bug screen mesh on a box fan or some other heavy duty fan, and turn the fan on high, placing it where mosquitos frequent. Mosquitos are weak at flying, and they naturally get entrained in the flow of air from a powerful fan. The fan will pull them against the bug screen which they can't get off of due to being weak at flying. There, on the screen, they will dehydrate to death with the constant air flow. Any that are still alive can be easily killed with a spray of rubbing alcohol. Since one of these fans essentially filters the air through the screen, and can circulate thousands of cubic feet per hour, such a system essentially filters mosquitos out of that volume of air.

What finally worked for me was using the mosquito dunks in what I call mosquito traps. I take 5 gallon buckets and fill them about a third full with water. I throw in a few leaves to recreate a natural water collection area and then I put in a piece of the mosquito dunk. I actually WANT the mosquitoes to find these traps and use them to lay their eggs. So I place them all over the yard wherever I have noticed collections of mosquitoes. After about a couple of weeks, you will notice that your mosquito population has plummeted! I have only been bit by one mosquito this year, and I have never used any repellent spray.
This breaks their life cycle. After the adults lay their eggs, the eggs die and soon after the adults die as well. Pretty soon, no more mosquito population!
ima try this trick myself!! i use my fogger use repellent coils but works just for a few minutes mosquito population its out of control this year in Los Angeles!!! we had a lot of rain so im sure there is a lot of standing water everywhere still!! plus my backyard its full of fruiting trees so they have the perfect place to rest!!

The dunks are great! I got a tip from another creator that worked so well and so I pass it on. Get three or four pails and fill 1/3 of the way with water, add a dunks and place throughout your yard. In 5 to 10 days misquotes will be gone. Adults will have lived their lifecycle, laid eggs that the dunks with kill. Once you’ve broken their lifecycle you’ll be free of them.
mosquitos prefer to return to their birth place to lay eggs. unless you eliminate that option they won't even look at your poisoned bucket.
I'm surprised this would work, because standing water should attract new mosquitoes I would think?? And so I would think they would still hang out around your property because you have provided them that water to lay their eggs. Sure they will not propagate anymore, so I can see the efficacy there, but it seems this would keep attracting new mosquitoes from neighboring areas. Thoughts?? I have many neighbors in very close proximity, so I think it would be even worse for someone such as myself, no?

As a former pest control technician that specialized in mosquitos, this is a very informative video. I just bought that leaf blower attachment, I'm excited to use it, never realized how spoiled I was when I had my professional gear, carrying around a 5 gallon sprayer can get heavy at times. Also OneGuard is a great insect growth regulator and knockdown formula for up to 45 days of protection, it's what I use in Houston and it works every time.
Would OneGuard work well for little gnats in my yard? I don’t have a huge mosquito problem, but the little tiny flies (gnats, I think) are really a problem for me.

@shawn1869 I did, it does burn to get it on your skin. Always blow with the wind not against and wear long sleeves and pants plus respirator when applying. I can't say I do it but it's proper protocol. I usually get it done real quick then take a shower with dawn immediately but that's just bc I've lived through the burning sensation it can cause and I'm not looking to revisit those memories in 100+ degree heat.
@@shawn1869 Depends on what you are spraying. There are some pest control chemicals that can be really dangerous if gotten on skin (like head to the ER and get a counter-shot dangerous). Most of the commercial stuff like Cutter's Lawn Bug control and others are pretty mild pest controls that if gotten on your skin won't send you to the ER but should be washed off as soon as possible with something like Dawn. When in doubt, always cover up and always mask up.

I followed your advise a year ago and bought my own Stihl sprayer for mosquitoes and ticks using Demand CS. It had already paid for itself spraying my 2 acres along with my daughters and niece’s home. Everyone is happy with the results and I only spend about $80 a season. I really appreciate that, for a larger space that setup can't be beat. I am hearing now pros are charging $80 per month for spraying and at 6 months a year thats crazy. Glad to hear its working out so well
@@SilverCymbal Our minimum is 85 now, in a relatively low cost of living area. Our branch handles about 800 mosquito customers a year and we're trying to get it to 1000. The biggest cost, as with all pest control, is liability. We kill a koi pond about every other year - accidentally of course - and one time that happened we ended up paying out 10k. Apparently he had the rarest breed of koi that were decades old. I agree that the profits seem great, and the products are a lot safer now than they used to be, but never forget it's a poison and the label is the law. Penalties range from fines to, if you're unlicensed, prison time.

Great vid. We have used sprayer with mild soap water. Spraying lawns and any bushes etc. seem to have worked. The concept i have been told is that mosquitoes land in those areas for rest and get soap on them. They cant land on water after that since soap disturbs water surface tension, so they cant lay eggs. Just reapply after rains. We reapply weekly.
fourth method, totally free: put out a trough which encourages mosquitoes to lay - then empty it out every three days to kill all the larvae, refill to encourage more laying, empty out in three days... If you are going away on holiday put a dunkin donut in it to get them with the bacteria, or just leave it empty. Fifth method: add goldfish to the pond, they LOVE mosquito larvae

For years now I have been adding a tire valve to my manual pump sprayers so that I can quickly recharge the pressure with my air compressor. A 1/2" drill bit is perfect. A common tire valve and some string to fish the valve through the hole. A pair of channel locks works well to get it locked into place but I just bought a tool kit for doing this from Amazon for $10 and it came with valves, the tool to screw onto the valve and a stem tool.
A small amount of dish soap or any lubricant you are comfortable with can make it a bit easier. I just started treating the threads of the pump insert hoping to keep it from getting stuck as they always do for me.
With the sprayer you showed it has an overpressure valve so I just use my air compressor to add air until the valve starts to release. I then have maximum pressure that's safe. In the past I have added an inexpensive pressure gauge by drilling an additional hole and screwing the gauge in but personally I'm confident with knowing how much air to put in the one I have that does not have the release valve.
A powered sprayer would be great but they come at a great cost. We spray a couple of organic liquids on our garden; Neem oil, and Spinosad, and it's convenient to have a sprayer for each one with the tire valve for quick recharge. With our garden size we would need to pump it manually three or four times per use.
I'm confident you could perfect this method in a video if you wanted to.
As far as I can recall I thought of this idea on my own. I know I've never seen it in a video but I haven't specifically looked for a video either.

I have a couple tips/ways that might be helpful for some people -
1) you can attract dragonflies, bats and/or the many types of birds that feed on mosquitos
2) you can plant some of the many different types of plants that repel mosquitoes (catnip, mint, sage, etc)
personally I'm partial to attracting the dragonflies and birds - we love watching them fly around

I find that planting catnip, sage, citronella etc., does nothing except keeps mosquitos from landing on those plants. Yay.

Few years back, when I had a lawn, we used to spray concentrated garlic for Mosquitoes and Ticks. Worked pretty well too. Smelled like a restaurant for a few days but hey, no bugs.

the other day I took my small sprayer with neem oil in it and just pointed it at the end of my (also EGO) blower and it worked awesome. I had seen that attachment and was considering it, but decided to give this a try for my sunflowers. Worked awesome.

@@simd510 for mosquitoes I did mix of Demand CS, Talak and Tekko Pro. It definitely helped, but it did not eradicated mosquitos completely. Also I don’t think spraying once a month is sufficient.

I bought a STIHL backpack sprayer, brand new, for $450 and cannoned my area in Bifenthrin. Insane results. It went from bugs so thick you would inhale them to being dead quiet.
I avoided any flowering bushes and still see bumble bees, and dragonflies. Game changer.

If you have items that hold water like a couple of extra spare tires or something to heavy or awkward to empty the water from, just give it a squirt of Dawn dish washing liquid. It will kill any larva already swimming in the water. Even better, female mosquitoes actually land on the water to lay their eggs. The soap reduces surface tension of the water so instead of standing on the water and laying her eggs, the female mosquito instantly sinks and drowns.
I don't use exact measurements myself, I just walk the yard with the Dawn bottle and give a squeeze into any mosquito breeders I find, but a tablespoon per estimated gallon of water should be more than enough.
I bought into the Mosquito Sniper system awhile ago and it's fantastic! I use it with my Greenworks blower and Greenworks battery powered backpack sprayer. The battery backpack makes all the difference. No need to pump and you can easily switch between hands for the blower when it starts to get a little tiring. The people at Mosquito Sniper are fantastic. Their customer service is exceptional and fast. I can't recommend enough. Previous years I was spending over $1k to get the exact same treatment that I can do for less than $15 per treatment now. Ticks were a huge issue in our yard and that is no longer the case.

THIS IS AWESOME! I could see me mounting this system on my push blower (which not is converted to mount on my tractor). I can just fill the 4 gallon tank with the chems, turn on the electric pump, and drive the gas blower around the property. I would recommend a backpack style sprayer; this allows for not only more product to use at once, but you can pump it with one hand while you're blowing with the other, and don't have to stop to pump.
This is some great information. I've also been using the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator and it's been rather effective. Fill the tube with some warm water and hang it on the north end of a tree. I've got a pond in my back yard, so I hang them around the corners of my back yard. It significantly reduced the population to where I didn't need to apply deet anymore.
Mosquito dunks work great. Just read the Amazon reviews. Mine are kept in the garage and work fine. A couple aluminum baking pans with dirty water and a quarter donut and in a couple/ few weeks pretty clear of mosquitos.
Also, big box stores sell a hose attachment to spray mosquito killer in damp/ shaded lawn areas that also works well for me, no kids or pets in those areas.

I've been using Demand CS for about 15 years. Stuff is amazing. And the residual really does last for months and month.

Same. Some of the lower price versions work pretty good, too. But Demand is the only one we'll use in the house. Make sure you add an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) to get even more extended coverage.
Useful thanks. Just a reminder that we humans & our household pets bring them indoors on our clothing & hair. Even bringing laundry in that has been hanging outdoors & forgetting to shake it first can be a real pain.
Incense is a good way to screen in an area, particularly ones that use charcoal instead of mako powder. Placed low every 3-5 feet around the perimeter of a deck or patio and maybe one under the person who gets bitten the most will keep them at bay.
It is also helpful to plant sweet allysum and other garden companion plants that attract hoverflies, mud dauber and other predatory insects that will eat the mosquitoes.
Lastly, put out houses and roots for bluebirds, swifts, swallows and bats. They are all insectivores that feed at different times of day.
I have a dynatrap bug zapper which I picked up at costco. I put it near an easement on our property and it seems to keep those pesky bugs away. It's nice not having to use any chemicals and all I have to do is empty the trap every few weeks.
I personally bought 10 5 gallon sized BLACK buckets with lids, cut a hole in the lids that goes all the way to the brim, put a netting (1 inch squares) between the bucket and lid to prevent my cat drinking the water, filled the buckets with water and added mosquito bits/dunks. I then placed the buckets in cool shady areas with vegetation around the perimeter of my entire property. I have checked on the buckets and can see mosquito larva which is good news. Although there are still mosquitoes, it’s noticeably better than previous years and we’ve had a ton of rain the past 2 weeks.
bear532, great idea to "cut a hole in the lids that goes all the way to the brim, put a netting (1 inch squares) between the bucket and lid to” keep animals for from falling into or drinking the water. I also like the idea of using hardware cloth instead of netting but the lid "circle” may not fit on with this.
Just bought my first home and the mosquitos are out on control in my backyard which I’m assuming is from my neighbors big pool across my fence. Can’t wait to try out the mosquito sniper!

In addition to what you suggest, how about providing water vessels in areas around the house to attract mosquitoes to lay eggs in them? Just remember to check and empty them out when you see the larvae in them, and refill them again.
Another trick to use is a plastic kiddie pool with an inch of water, mix in a half cup of dish soap and mix it up really good, then put a layer of 1/2" hardware cloth over the top to keep birds and bees out. Mosquitoes will pass through the hardware cloth, try to land on the water to lay their eggs, but the dish soap destroys the surface tension so the mosquito can't land. They just sink and die. Fill it back up with the hose every couple days as needed, dump it out and hose off the lawn if it gets gross.
Are these chemicals harmful to other insects besides mosquitos? I really dobt want to hamr the polinators as a have a vegetable garden and fruit trees.
I've always had great luck with the Cutter stuff that just hooks up to your hose. But I do a double application of it to really make sure that nothing is living on or near my lawn lol

I read that you can use those donuts plus a couple buckets of water around the outside of your home and they mosquitos lay their eggs there so it eliminates them. never tried it though.
We had the buckets out with the donuts. Unfortunately we found 2 dead chipmunks in one of the buckets. 😪 No more buckets here. If you use them make sure the small animals can get out.
@@stephenbadamo130 Thanks for the warning, Stephen. People can also consider covering the top of the bucket with chicken wire or hardware cloth, etc.. Of course, the wire needs to be wired onto the bucket in a way so that animals cannot remove it but easy enough for the bucket owner to remove, if needed.
I've been doing this for about 4-5 years and regardless of brand you need three treatments to make this work: a knockdown agent (for immediate relief if you have existing issues); a longer-term residual preferably micro-bead based; and an insect growth regulator. You can usually mix them together.
The knockdown is obvious. The residual (something like Demand CS) can give a few weeks of coverage to extend the knockdown; and the IGR won't kill anything but will stop new hatchlings before they become a problem.
Spray the shaded brush and trees in the heat and sun, because the mosquitos will be hiding in the trees when it's hot. You'll get better knockdown. Get grass/brush pile areas to slow fly growth. IGR is the key here.
Add Permethrin SFR if you have ticks, and get back into those trees. Spray from waist/shoulder height down to the ground. Look for animal trails and get those good.
Keep all this stuff away from open water, and wear protection. Full face mask, full sleeves and gloves. I have a Stihl gas backpack sprayer, and when fully kitted out the kids say I look like a ghostbuster. It's heavy, hot work, but worth it. Spray day for me is a full workout day.
According to Gerry Baker America's Master Gardiner Spray all the bushes in the area and lawn with Lemon scented dish soap. All the plants and lawn will love it. It lasts for 48 hours.
This is so much better than using tweezers like I was. That took soooooo long.
I started taping my sprayer boom nozzle to my blower 20 plus years ago. I can blow pesticide up under my trees 25 feet . The wind flips the leaves over and over to coat everything.

On the black plastic skid with rain water. I drilled tiny drain holes all around the edges on a device like that. The water drains out on it own.
Another mosquito control method is to pour baby oil onto water surfaces. Just a little bit is needed. It disturbs the surface tension of the water which is critical to the larvae development.

Cut you grass lower, mosquitos will hide near the root system of tall grass. I reduced my mow height from 4 -1/4 in. to 3-1/4 in. and I noticed less mosquitos near my deck. Also, water management drain you gutters to a sunny location in the yard if possible.
throwing talstar p with a blower and no mask is wild to me, every single time I use that stuff even with a mask on my mouth tingles, that stuff is effective and powerful at 1oz per gal
If you live in area with extreme temperatures it’s more effective to spray late in the evening so the spray doesn’t dry to fast also check into insect growth regulators to help break breeding cycles for longer lasting insects control
I just subscribed thanks for the video. I enjoyed seeing how your mounting your other antennas on the Ham Radio tower and now you can easily put a Yagi or a dipole on there and listen to amateur radio stations without a license. You might really enjoy that.
There is also a propane fogger that has a tank that allows you to trigger pump insecticide through a coiled steel tube that passes thrifty the flame and vaporizes the insecticide into a fog. I used to spray my townhouse"s tiny Georgetown garden patio area. It's great for getting into tight spaces and underneath decking or the a.c. compressor, etc. Then I would throw the mosquito bits version of this around the beds and in the basement window wells, around and in gutters, downspouts, etc. And lastly to keep the ants at bay I would sprinkle a powdered mix of sugar and borax around the perimeter of my house, windows, doors, around the garbage cans, near term back gate, and all around the perimeter of the foundation inside in the basement.
I wasn't a particularly fastidious housekeeper but I rarely had insects or ants around.

I would also use a hose sprayer to douse the lawn, shrubs, exterior of the house and everything in the backyard with permethrin once a month every spring and summer.

I do the dunks and bits in buckets and pails around the home but also after lots of rain if I get them around my back patio I grill something on my grill with some hard wood and the smoke seems to run them out of the area. The dunks seem to do 90% of the work.
I've had incredible luck just providing more plants for dragonflies to thrive. IF you can get dragonflies to thrive and attract them to your yard then your mosquito problems will be behind you without any work. This is good too if there's an affordable all natural solution to pour into it!
Dragonflies hunt mosquitos, wonder if there's a kit to raise some as they can decimate a mosquito population very quickly. They tend to really only show up towards the end of the summer, but I saw one just the other day, very very early in the season for western PA

Love mine. ROI is within the first year and I get to apply when I want to unlike a service. That nozzle end is much different than mine though. Is that new?
My ROI was two treatments (4-5 years ago), compared to the service we were paying. I use less chemical and get better results. Of course, the service would be in and out in 15 minutes. I take several hours but hit a more diverse area. Those guys just hit the easy edges of the woods. I get back into that stuff.
Dunks don't work for me. Tried for years. Instead, I did a test with Dawn dish soap and that worked. So for now, I'm using Dawn dish soap in standing pools around my property that aren't immediately natural. Otherwise, flip over or drain standing water.

What about mosquitoes that love hanging around doors? Is there something I can treat the back of my house with that will keep all mosquitoes away so they stop hanging around the door area, or will any mosquito pesticide work and last, being sprayed on plastic, wood, etc?
Demand-CS or a generic version will work there because it has a high residual. Cheaper alternative is Permethrin SFR but it has a lower residual. Permethrin has some repellent qualities, but it's real value is killing them. So don't over apply or you'll scare them off. Both can be mixed in a spray bottle and applied by hand, but don't leave either in the bottle long. Use it all then clean it out. Do not use near water where fish live.
Oh man, Talstar P (bifenthrin) is super toxic. Dunno about you but when I'm using my backpack sprayer, I suit up with my muck boots, nitrile gloves, coveralls, goggles & respirator.

Same. Full face respirator for me, long sleeves, etc. Kids have to be gone for the day. But they see me suit up before they leave, and say I look like a Ghostbuster (I have a big Stihl gas powered sprayer). It gets heavy and hot those days. But worth it.

I have a question. I have a garden with veggies and fruits I grow. Will spraying around or on the plants be harmful to harvest and eat them later? I've tried everything to try to minimize mosquitoes and nothing has seemed to work..thanks for the info
#2 poisions mammals (including housepets) as well as mosquitos. #3 poisions insects other than mosquitos. Just use a safe repellant, and scape your land to encouage a healthy population of Dragonflies, Birds, Bats, and Frogs. Planting any species of Allium near your home and sitting areas helps as well.
Mosquito dunks will NOT poison any animals or fish. There is NO poison in it at all. It contains a bacterium that only eats mosquito larvae--nothing else.
