The lower unit oil needs to be changed annually on your outboard motor to ensure a long running life, and so that the gears in your lower unit stay sufficiently lubed. This motor is a 70hp Yamaha 4 Stroke, but the same process applies to any outboard motor.
If you have a leak in your lower unit of your outboard motor, the gear oil will turn gray in color, and too much water will stress the gears, and metal shavings will bind up the propeller, and cause major damage to your outboard motor. Be sure to complete this procedure annually to keep your boat motor running in optimal condition.
If your outboard motor is not being stored in a temperature controlled environment over the winter, and you live in an area that freezes during the winter, it's best to do this maintenance in the fall of the year before you store the boat for the winter to ensure that if you did have water in your lower unit, it wouldn't freeze and expand and crack any lower unit components.

I swallowed a big June bug when we were driving. I'm not really hungry.
