  • Burzum's Varg Vikernes is one of the most controversial figures in the history of metal and rock music, and for good reason. However - I don't want to talk about that. I want to talk about something that is often overlooked in the drama surrounding such a controversial and polarising character: the music. This video takes a complete journey through every single Burzum album from the early 90s right up to the final release (so far) in 2020.

I still regularly listen to Burzum (a few times a month), even after discovering the music in the late 90s. There's just something timeless about the musical soundscapes that Varg created. Burzum was always an outlier in the BM scene in as much as it eschewed the common image of Satanism and style over substance (Mayhem being a prime example) and instead embraced a more folkloric, dreamlike quality. I think the fact that Varg was one of the few figures in the scene who actually "walked the walk" (and still does), and was an example of art and life entwining, is one of the prime reasons that Burzum stands head and shoulders above all of its contemporaries.

idk what you mean by "walking the walk" varg is a brain broken individual complaining about modernity and women to a phone in his car and saying weird dumb shit on twitter. He's a bit pathetic imo...

    Hey Lineswax!
I have a recommendation of which I don't know if you have ever checked them. It's about the first Himsa album, groundbreaking ceremony. It's basically a totally different band than all of their other work, only the bassist part of this album is part of the later Himsa.
It sounds as if Pig Destroyer and Mr Bungle had a child that was raised by wolves. I hope you enjoy it and thanks once again for another fire vid!

@@linesinwax4996 They were one of the first metal bands I got into. The songs Kiss or Kill and the Great Depression were .mp3's on my middle school mp3 player (of a grand 32 songs). I never understood why the songs were so different, almost as if they were two totally different bands. They are.
I'm very curious to what you think of the album, on metallum some idiot gave it a mere 10% out of 100, showing not everyone has the time to take note of the album as it is intended. I think its too often forgotten, and it deserves some better attention.
I hope you like it and I would love to hear what you think of it.

Great video. On the drums sounding programmed on Belus and Fallen - he had a video up on his old channel talking about making those albums in which he said he didn't have the stamina for playing full songs on drums anymore so he recorded one bar of each beat needed then looped it, so they're real drums but they end up sounding programmed for that reason. Never heard of anyone else doing that before - I agree it doesn't sound great on the albums so I guess that's why.

Wow, I didn’t know that, thank you. I wonder if that was a deciding factor in stopping the “metal” side of Burzum.

Love Burzum out of all the bands of that time he had a very distinct sound and style.. The only other band with their own take and sound on Black Metal was Emperor.
My fav Burzum album has to be Hvis lyset tar oss - there is something about this album which resonates with me. I agree Darkthrone Transylvania Hunger is a classic.
I got the original copy of Aske on CD found it in a second hand shop bought it for £5 😂 now it's worth way more than that

22:35 - it's real drums played by varg but he recorder only like a few measures and then copypasted them
so it's kind of inbetween xDDD

I was waiting for a "lets find out". I remember running up manmoel mountain in the snow listening to Burzum. I wonder if Burzum a lot of the material sounds similar because Digby Pearson said when he met varg he played him the demo tapes for his next 3 records, so it was all written around the same time. Also in relation to Earache Varg became too hot to handle basically Kerrang threatened to blacklist them and Napalm death, Godflesh, cathedral etc threatened to leave the label if they signed Varg (probably something to do with their anarcho punk backgrounds) so hence why earache never signed burzum.

    • @linesinwax4996

I missed a golden opportunity with the “let’s find out” haha
I knew Earache flirted with signing Burzum but I did not know about the “boycott” from other Earache bands. Very interesting, and not at all surprising, I suppose.
      Cheers!

This might sound like the cliché to end all clichés, but I really stopped caring after Filosofem. As much as I hate Varg for all the resons everyone and their mother, sister and father's brother's uncle's former roommate know, his first 4 albums and Aske are unbeatable.

Just for being a little bit of a smart arse here: all the titles on Folosofem are in german originally, not norwegian. In fact there are a lot of Burzum songs with german titles. "Fallen" for example isn´t past progressive english, its "falling" in german. With Vargs ideologies in mind think of that what ever you want. (BTW I´m geramn so I know).
That aside, great video on on of the greatest bands Black Metal has to offer.
    For me its:
    1. Filosofem
    2. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
    3. Burzum/Aske
Everything after he went to jail or made in jail I don´t care for at all. He fell of.

As far as i'm aware, varg dropped the guitar because he started to say that it was a black instrument and rock was negro music, and because of this he didnt want to have any ties with it anymore. Not criticizing you or anyone that listens to burzum (god knows that I listen to a lot of grey area facist/nazi music too) but thats why is difficult to say that you cant ignore the artist and just focus on the music, a lot of the stuff the person believes is there hidden between the lines too, both in the lyrics and in the instruments he chooses to play.

    • @linesinwax4996

The guy is problematic as fuck man, for sure, that’s why I tried to focus entirely on the music and not address that too much. Everyone addresses that Varg is a wasteman. It’s been done to death. Not that I have a monopoly on talking about Burzum’s albums, but they mean a lot to me so I wanted to talk about them. I’ve been back and forth about whether I should make this video or not, but in the end it’s up to the individual whether to “engage” with the art of Burzum or not. Neither approach is incorrect IMO.
Cheers for your insightful comment man. I appreciate everything that you’ve said right there.
(BTW I do not believe in separating the art from artist. Been meaning to do a wider video on this and the problem with black metal / NSBM as a whole but I’ve struggled to find the right words that won’t just land me in hot water haha)

i was hoping this video would illuminate me on why people like Burzum but i still don't get it, I just find him boring, maybe he was a victim of his own success and since he sticks to black metal tradition so much it just kind of becomes generic, when a lot of people think of black metal they think burzum but i think that ends up being for the worse because it becomes just "well, its black metal...". His ambient stuff had some cool ideas, but overall others did it better. I think that's the general problem with burzum, he did some cool stuff in the beginning but (for me) it wasn't good enough to continue to stick out through the years and others have just done it better since. I feel like if burzum wasn't one of the OG's he would go largely unnoticed
