The Berzerker - Complete Discography Retrospective

  • The Berzerker are one of the fastest, heaviest bands to have ever entered the realms of grindcore and death metal. Born from a speedcore project into a fully fledged touring band - but always led by frontman and drum programmer Luke Kenny - The Berzerker gave us five albums of unseemly levels of brutality. Mixing gabba techno with grindcore and death metal (not to mention grimy samples from documentaries), this retrospective covers the full career of The Berzerker, from the speedcore days right through to the hiatus in the late 2000s.

The Berzerker is an underrated gem, we can only hope Luke finally finishes what he started with the 6th album 2 years ago. I'm still holding out for it. Nothing like The Berzerker will ever happen again, but I'm so glad we got what we got. \m/

I've worked with Gary Thomas for several years. He's got a family and a mortgage, he's never been big headed about what he's done, very humble and definitely one of the nicest crustiest men you could ever meet with a good sense of humor. Like all people who's gone out and done it he's got a different view point from the person who watches someone else do it, and wants to try different things from life

Me and a friend of mine got heavily influenced by The Berzerker at the age of 13-14. Must have been 99/00. We were browsing Napster for the most extreme stuff available at that time. They got us to record a casiogrind demo tape called Eisenhüttenstadt, the 23 old treasure is still alive on tape reportedly.

In regards to those Re-awakening remixes, the band ran a competition on their Myspace page for remixes. If you emtered theyd send you the stems of one or two of the albums tracks nd left you at it, with the winners of course getting featured in the final release.
So they are all fanmade....and no...mine didnt get picked 😅
But been going back and listening to these guys recently, big nostalgia from my teens. Remember seeing them in Newport TJs in about 2007/2008 and Sam was touring with them. Absolutely lovely chap but Luke was a bit standoffish by comparison...although we bumped into him at Wacken later that year and he was super chillz taking a good chunk of time to talk to us and take some photos so I always put it down to just being in "gig mode"

David gray was a full member of the berzerker for a year, it fell apart because Sam was living in England and quit for a while and Matt and David made akercocke their full time priority, I spoke to David Gray about that show in Ponty(I'm originally from Blackwood) in Bristol recently where I know live, he said he enjoyed that tour. Although David did say in an into the necrosphere interview that his new gig as the drummer for Anaal Nathrakh is a similar vibe to the berzerker. Also Matt was writing berzerker esque material when he also joined ted maul when he was living in London, ted maul’s first record is savage if they had made a second with Matt wow. Digby said on his ask earache blog about why he separated his relationship with the Berzerker "the project wasn't progressing the way that Luke told us it would".

I forgot to mention there were Four bands that were similar back then The berzerker, Anaal Nathrakth and The Axis of Perdition and their drummers were absolute monsters The berzerker (Gary Thomas/David Gray), Anaal Nathrakth (Nick Barker, Danny from Napalm) oh and the Axis of Perdition who had dan mullins behind the kit, a lot of people thought Dan could only play slow because he was best known for My dying bride, but listen to his drumming with the axis he's an absolute beast. It showed how things had moved on when dragged into sunlight joined the party. The fourth band was another earache band called December wolves (who later evolved into trap them- didn't include them because DW had no drummer), they were doing the industrial meets grindcore meets black metal thing and were extreme with it, all the bands took the agoraphobic nosebleed mould and ran with it to it's logical extreme.

Also was reminded of this by someone recently one of the drum and bass/gabba kids who used to post on the berzerker forum back in the day grew up to be rob swire from pendulum. So when rob says he was influenced by the the berzerker back in the day he's not saying it to appear scene he's legit. His main influences were the berzerker, pitchshifter, pop will eat itself and the prodigy.
