- Today, Karl Sanders of the technical death metal band NILE sits down with me to talk about all manners of things!
We'll talk about the final consensus of the latest NILE record, Vile Nilotic Rites, why Karl switched from Cakewalk Sonar to Steinberg Cubase, as well as his favorite instrument library. We'll also be treated to practically an arrangement tutorial in Cubase and why Karl loves the arranger track so much.

I saw Nile in 2010 in Oulu, Finland. Small Finnish town middle of nowhere, far north, cold, dark and miserable. Mr. Sanders still had a time of his life playing, he smiled and was so into it. Respect.
I've seen Nile twice and every time he looks like he's having an absolute blast
I was fortunate enough to see Nile play live on three occasions. Karl is among the nicest, most genuine people I've ever met. Despite his stature as one of the best guitarists in death metal, there is no arrogance or pretentiousness about him.
The fact that Chernobyl actually took the extra time to timestamp this video... I have to give credit where credit is due when people are actually professional with their videos. Means a lot!
You can't just watch THE KARL SANDERS talking about Nile and all and not just listen to the whole discography afterwards... I can't even explain how good this band is, my heart can, but she can't talk..

That actually blows my mind, to see someone who's writing I admire a lot just showing the nitty gritty of how he assembles songs. I'm sure I'll be using this in future.

One of my death metal heroes. Karl is such an amazing guy, met him last year when Nile played in Milan with Hate Eternal and Vitriol. In Their Darkened Shrines HAS to be one of my favorite album s ever. Thanks Scott!!
Indeed. I met Karl back in late 90's. He used to roll around this rig with a CRT monitor and a computer below in a rack for all the background stuff and music that would play prior to a song (and samples and such) it was so odd at the time. When I guessed what it was, he said 'Ya brother exactly" haha.

This is incredible. Saw Nile live about 20 years ago when they opened for Cradle of Filth of all bands. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and that it was being played by seemingly ordinary human beings and not actual gods of Egypt.
Karl really is a genius
Karl is a person that should be on top of whole death metal arena. I listen to him almost 20 years and Nile was for me smth special like deep in my heart and mind which help me a lot in my life. Really appreciate that person and Nile group. Cheers from Ukraine!!!
Karl seems such a cool guy honestly and you can tell that by how much he is willing to share, he doesn't big himself up or talk down to people at all or enter pretentious "muso" mode even though he could as he's a technically brilliant guitarist, there aren't many really who would so comfortably chat away and genuinely enjoy it on an ordinary level like this, get stuck into chatting about vst plugins etc., it is really great to see and the kind of stuff I love, being a bit of a "spergy" nerd myself and loving rambling on about my obsessive interests in the same way, I can relate to Karl a lot like I could with his legendary liner notes haha. Great interview.
I've been using Cubase for 15 years and just now I discovered the arranger function. I'm so glad I clicked on this video. Also, if it weren't for cracked versions of Cubase 3 and 5 I don't think most of us metal musicians would have started using it in the first place.
Karl is instrumental in most all of us wanting to better our guitar playing and show us a caliber of playing death metal that I expect from bands. Not to say that there wasn't great musicians prior but guys like Karl and George really set the bar high and then Erik Rutan in Hate Eternal later set the bar for ferocity in my death metal.
How is this channel not any bigger with more subs is disturbing to me! This shit is dope!

As of the year 2000 I have seen Nile perform the 7 times . At least 5 separate occasions I had the opportunity to converse Karl . Really nice guy . What you see is what you get . I have to respect that.

Great interview and have been very lucky enough to see Nile live 6 times what a band to see live.Also the Barker interview was great my favourite drummer.Karl is so correct about listening to death/thrash/grind that sometimes you just need to chill out and I've found if I'm listening to something relaxing people always say "this is different for you".I think metal heads have a very diverse library.
I don't know how many karma points one has to achieve but dude every metal heads goal should be to get reborn as Karl Sanders.

I remember when I saw Nile back in 2013 here in Santiago, Chile at The Metal fest. They sounded so great, crystal clear sound (many songs sounding better than in the albums), amazing performance and I remember Karl with a big smile looking at the audience and I was thinking "well... that's not very death metal of him! haha great memories from that fest. Amazing musician and one of the truly original bands in this subgenre.

Great interview! Karl is engaging and has such an inspiring work ethic. I'm a Logic user but the Arranger function in Cubase is really interesting. Also a big thanks for the heads up on Eduardo Tarilonte's instruments, they sound stellar!
I'm curious to know how good Karl's keyboard chops are, I suspect he knows his way around a keyboard pretty well.
But a bit about drop tunings and downtuning. Van Halen was in drop C# in 1981 and Bolt Thrower was in A Carcass in B in 1988. Vai even played a 7 string with Whitesnake in 1989. So I think low tunings were coming of age by the early 90s.

Holy Shit! I use cubase and didn't know it had an arranger. I got so used to using Acid Music Studio to move shit around and demo it. I am glad he offered this free lesson. Karl is a super nice and accommodating dude.

I loved the parts when he talks about Saurian projects and also revealed his Tarilonte's favorite which I've been wondering for a while since I've been trying to create a track inspired by Karl. He also seems like a pretty fun and nice man.

So...using my DAW, I'll often just record myself playing guitar. No idea in mind, just riffing. I later go back and turn those riffs essentially into sound samples that I can later arrange, cut and paste, mix around, whatever into a full song. I had the idea to do that because I make industrial music and I use a lot of samples anyways. It made sense for me to treat the guitars as samples. Am I understanding that the Arranger is essentially the same idea?

great interview - wow sibelius! we used to use it in school for writing hadnt heard it since then! but i always preferred guitar pro for writing. funnily enough we used cubase as well (4 at the time iirc), really good questions yea am so glad they stayed in drop A cos i had 1 of my bass set up as BEAD so cud play Nile \m/

I saw nile back in 98 for the first time and I was tripping on shrooms and chaos had a new meaning too me and Egyptian music was amazing with the blue lights!

about 6-7yrs ago I spent about a year trying to get my guitar to handle drop A or just Bb standard, but I couldn't get the balance right with the high strings, either to taut or a little too loose. For me, and it's guitar dependent, I've been happy with C# standard.
I understand what you are saying here. I struggle with "tension" in regard to string gauge and scale. I've come to like STRING THROUGH guitars tuned to D standard with 10-46 strings. I dont like heavy strings. D is about where I can get with a 24 fret, string through set up.

Nile has a tendency to play really fast technical metal then out of the blue in the middle of the song it gets dark as f..k and heavy. 4th Arra of Dagon and the Imperishable Stars are Sickened are two examples of this. Sent chills throughout my body when I first heard those songs. I'm like where da f..ck did this come from 😂

Dude what a shame to hear about the hate about Darkened Shrines. I loved that record since I first heard it. The booklet notes and research fascinated me and I loved it. I can't emphasize enough how much I love that record, I feel sorry that Karl had to go through that for that masterpiece!

question for karl: how do you create the whole arabic sounding riffs and licks in death metal?
You need arabic scales such as the minor scale, phyrigian etc. You use this scale to choose notes in soloing and chors/notes for riffs. But you also need good phrasing with slides and agressive bends to get that middle easterm feel
@@drugjoza5000 best to use a electric sitar. Or CGCGGC tunings. The scales are very easy in some tunings.

It's funny all the other albums got so much hate, I can see why with In Their Darkened Shrines because it's "progressive" and conceptual, even though it is still my favourite. To me the only album that really warrants dislike is At the Gates of Sethu and that's mainly because the production is crap. I struggle to get into the new sound a bit with Vile Necrotic Rites, but I never used to like Ithyphallic that much and even that grows on me these days.
Metal, Death Metal is the only thing I love exept weapons and beautiful ladies, there are The most heavy songs that make me tongle and laugh cry, other songs, I cant sing along with , because iwill be choked up and i t ll be lik r im crying but km in love with it, it happened 3 times today already

Lmao!!!! There is an obvious best albums list, and #1 is obviously Annihilation of the Wicked.
Vile Nilotic Rites is the best in many years though. This lineyo change was one if those few instances where it was well needed to reinvigorate the sound just enough to sound like a classic Nile sound while losing the staleness that Nile had been for several albums in recent years.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Nile, but Thise Whom the Gods Detest was the last great album prior to Vile
55:02 "Nu metal KoЯn craze bullshit..." I really don't think it's fair to throw in KoЯn in that line just like that... They have had an own original sound and style and their first album was quite original. (I know they have been called the fathers of nu metal though... Maybe they inspired later bands of that genre.)

I hear so much hate towards Korn these days, particularly the first album, as if it is responsible for a bunch of terrible music in the 90's.
Being there it was different, I think this is a view often adopted by people who got into music in the 00's.
I love that first Korn release. There was NOTHING that had sounded anything like it up to that point, it was very Raw and kind of DIY like a punk aesthetic. I grew up in a very rural area, I didnt have MTV or heavy metal magazines when Korn came out, it was a few years before I knew what they looked like and I kind of wish I didnt because the whole hip hop look unfortunately had a negative mental association, my bad. That's fairly lame of me to care what people look like. And I hear a ton of hate toward Sepultura ROOTS. I hear that Sepultura " sold their soul to play Nu Metal and sound like Korn". I didnt get that at all. ROOTS was extremely interesting with me in that it embraced an ethnic exploration, particularly rhythmic in regards to percussion, and dealt with a different culture from mine from a different part of the world. It never felt like a betrayl of Thrash Metal, or any of the accusations I have witnessed against it. I think a lot of these negative perceptions are retroactive and inaccurate. In the early 90's it was good to break away from the traditional standards of what was presented by the record industry inregard to what is considered metal. By the late 90's the scum at the record companies flooded the market with formulaic crap that tried to copy the sounds of good bands that came out at the begining of the decade. And the pendulum swings back again.... it's what always happens. By the mid 00's there was 6 billion bands trying to sound like Maiden meets Metallica and noodling for 20 to 30 minutes on lifeless solo's. That will get maxed out and something new will come and be copied into oblivioin.
Korn 1 is still killer today as a stand alone piece of music. Wherever they ended up, hey, it's tough to keep being interesting and relevant as the world keeps going on.
Nile is still kicking ass for now.
