The 6/8 blast at the end of Kings of the Carnival Creation is one of the best sections of music ever created. He plays it with speed in aggression, but also STYLE. Nick is such a chill dude. I met him for the first time in 99 when he was filling in on drums for Borknagar on their tour with Emperor and talked with him a couple of times during his time in Dimmu in the years that followed. Definitely a drummer that deserves far more recognition than what he receives.
He was the drummer that made me fall in love with drumming in black metal when I was a kid. Im a guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist, so I never pursued that route, but I always really appreciated the role percussion played in music. He cemented that respect.
Thanks alot for this great interview. I think that a lot of fans and drummers we're waiting for this, because of alot unanswered questions on the Dimmu era, which shows what a monumental album Puritanical really was. I've been a fan of Nick since Cruelty, which was my first encounter with more extreme metal. I had been drumming for about a year and Nick's playing made me wanna up the ante. I played Cruelty over and over and later listned the shit out of Puritanical, Deathcult and Old Man's Child and absorbed his playing into mine, or at least at some point try to emulate his playing. He's been a constant influence in my drumming career over 20 years and I couldn't thank him enough for the inspiration and music hé brought forth. It took a pandemic locking everyone inside to slow Nick down enough to get the time for an interview. And you snagged it. Also it's crazy the stuff he taught himself back when this stuff was scarce. Blast beats, double kick, patterns etc. No ability to edit etc.
Dammit, I've been waiting literally since 1995 for this interview, that's when I fell in love with Nick's drumming in Cradle! Great interview, extra respect for the time stamps!
Thanks so much for doing this. Nick is a huge reason I got into drumming. The Dimmu album's he did were some of the first metal albums I ever listened too. Thanks for asking so many questions about them. I'd been wondering about so many of those same questions you asked since I was kid. Great Interview!
28:50 - I always thought this was a mixing thing, I just didn't want to believe that Nick would intentionally play that weird. Thanks for asking the question, I can die happy now! Also, congrats on landing this interview, killer job.
On that note, I'm glad Barker also thought the Cruelty re-master/remix was a bit off. Yeah, drums sounded a bit better, but they really got the guitars and keyboards wrong.
Nic is an incredible drummer and met him many years ago.ive said it before on other posts "when NIC joins a band he contributes so much and when he leaves a band he just can't be replaced".That's why I stopped listening to cradle and dimmu when he left that something was missing.
This was so cool. What a treat for all drummers who loved Barker’s ability. I have to strongly agree that Dimmu’s apex was when Barker played for them. Thank you to the host for asking so many great questions. I am now a subscriber of your channel
This has to be one of the best interviews I've had the pleasure of watching! As for anyone criticising the way you conducted the interview, they obviously haven't taken into account the fact that you're a massive fan of Nick Barker and I could easily tell that you had a million things going through your head. Anyway, great interview full of amazing details!!
Takes me back to my youth. I absolutely wore out my Dusk CD and the opening to Funeral in Carpathia still gives me chills. Great memories listening to all of Nick’s early-ish work. Thanks for this.
I love you Nicholas. You have a unique style and have brought a mass of brilliant ideas to all the bands you have played. Your drumming is very distinctive. You are an icon. You are an inspiration.
My favourite ever drummer - I've always wondered what gave his drumming that special adrenaline rush, sense of urgently executed aggression, or whatever you want to call it. Maybe it's what he says about speeding up on the fills; but it doesn't sound wrong because he comes back into time at the end? But then again all parts of his playing have that quality. My hero.
Great interview! I'm so glad to finally know what Nick has been up to these days. And can't wait to hear his future projects. Also great hearing him talk about his playing, on some of my all time favorite albums.

My introduction to him was at cofs vempire ep. I was speecless and still i am.. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
That Old Man's Child album rocked. Hope to see Nick and Galder create a new album in the future. Just needs to happen! 💪
Total legend. Also, I love every single Dimmu album and I think Nick did a hell of a job on Puritanical - an absolutely amazing record, no doubts.
Nic is an incredible drummer and met him many years ago.ive said it before on other posts "when NIC joins a band he contributes so much and when he leaves a band he just can't be replaced".That's why I stopped listening to cradle and dimmu when he left that something was missing.
Great interview dude! I’d love to know what he thinks of the latest Dimmu records
This was so cool. What a treat for all drummers who loved Barker’s ability. I have to strongly agree that Dimmu’s apex was when Barker played for them. Thank you to the host for asking so many great questions. I am now a subscriber of your channel
Great interview bro , finally a lot of questions about great past !
What an awesome interview! It was great hearing Nick give some insights to the recordings of early Cradle. Thank you for this.
Nick is a Saint for sitting through this. Dude.
Im 39 now first heard nick when i was 13 on principle ' still my favourite drummer'
this is gold'
THE MASTER OF MASTERS!!!! MR NICK BARKER IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE AN INSPIRATION FOR US DRUMMERS!! GREAT INTERVIEW CONGRATS!
Great interview. Nick is the man.
