I really appreciate all these films you make. You have really taught me a lot and there's always something new to watch and learn from you. Sometimes I just feel stuck or down and uncreative. Your way of telling things makes me calm and it makes my creativeness boost. Please don't stop doing this kind of teaching tutorials they really help! :)
It's good to see a video that not only says "do this" or "do that" but also explains why it's important to do things in a certain way i.e. to shoot a whole bunch of different shots, from close-ups to wide angle or not to use the close-ups too often if there's nothing meaningful to show. Good tips!
Mattih. You are an inspirational being. I have only said this for the third time in the youtube universe. The first being Tony Northrup and the second Brandon LI. thank you for your work.
Great video man, I do video production for a sports team and your point about making sure to tell each mini-story after each other really helps when going to a practice or game where the outcome is unpredictable.
New sub here! Great video!! When you're getting footage of an event or "scene" and you want to get coverage of an action. For example, lets say you're visiting a museum and you want shots of your subject walking up the front stairs. Do you ask people to repeat that action? Or do you try to get a wide/medium/tight shot all within the one movement? Thanks for the help!
STORY...the most critical element to ANY video. I think with travel videos you almost have to think linearly...the setup, the journey and the reveal, the denouement and the conclusion. Break those beats not subsections and cover it all. In the edit you can pick and choose what you leave and take out in terms of pacing and flow. Some good tips here, nice to see a fellow Torontonian getting some love on youtube.
Hey thanks for making this. These tutorials are really helpful for me because you go into the strategy and the mindset behind making films. I'm trying to improve in that area. You cover a lot of overall, set up mentality which a lot of other channels don't talk about. Thanks for all that you do.
Hey Matti, I just wanted to let you know that your files are very inspiring! I am new to the film game and I learn a lot from you!! I am travelling to Newfoundland in January and will certainly be implementing some of your ideas! Keep it up!! Mike
Awesome video! Very helpful, really opened my mind to be honest. I hadn't thought about this in so much detail . About the storytelling, the different shots, fluidity! Thank you!
I'm currently working minimum wage washing dishes to save up for a better camera, but in the mean time I'm getting really good at editing and filming with what I have. I really appreciate your videos!
Perfect! Keep at it man. Those kinds of jobs are so good to teach you to work hard and go after something you want to be doing so your not stuck there forever 🙌
Thank you! This is what I was looking for. Today I went with some friends to film a travel video for school and I had the feeling that we weren't doing it right and by watching this video it helped me undersand what I need to do for my next travel video. Greetings from Mexico
I wish I saw this video before I went on my week holiday to the Caribbean. I did however shoot loads so will have these tips in mind. You the man Matti!
This is really useful advice. Glad I found your channel. 10 years on from film school and I'm just getting back into it, so this really helps. Thanks for sharing!
Great video! Thanks for creating these TravelFeels! Super helpful. Keep up the amazing work as well. Whats the song used during the skating part? Can't locate it anywhere!
Just subscribed! Really good stuff here. I appreciate the extra explanation and examples of why "coverage" is so important. Looking forward to making some adjustments to my upcoming videos.
When you mention having your characters in the film as much as possible, a part of the scenery, what suggestions do you have for when you personally is the character and you're travelling alone?
Any tips for when traveling with a GF who doesn't have good filming sense? When I ask her to record me doing something, it ends up looking terrible lol. For this reason, I'm not in my videos often.
Dean Sonetirot Bwahaha Dean, same here lol. I mainly film my GF walking in front of me lool. But she starts to develop a sense for the camera. It comes with time
That's a good question. I tried to do that and always feel like the result is pretty boring. I think the only certainty is that a Gimbal is essential, it gives you much more flexibility with movements.
This is some really great advice. I can't tell you how many times I go to edit my footage and find it's not enough to get the feel I wanted. I'm going to be drilling this into my head so whenever I go out, I get the most varied shots! gotta capture it all ;)
Great tips here! I like how you did a medium and close up shot as he walks up the steps and the little portrait moment at the end. What do you call these profile/portfolio edits? I really like them as an idea
Hey! I'm pretty amazed by the quality! Do you use any ND-filters to shoot during daytime at wide aperture to achieve shallow DOP (obviously to keep your shutter 50/60 with accordance to 24/30 FPS)? Thanks in advance for reply
Hey Matt, question about coverage for other types of videos. What about something like a talk show? What angles and coverage would you do for that? Thanks man!
hey man I'm 14 years old and I'm an aspiring filmmaker. I started watching your videos a month ago, and I learned more than I had in that month, than I had in the month of film school I did.
Jesus! Where was this tutorial 4 years ago when we first started travelling abroad?! Lol Well, from here on out I promise to do my best to make you proud. Thank you SO MUCH for these videos!
Ah fantastic advice! This is one of those things that seems obvious once you know it, it's screaming at you everywhere. All good B roll has coverage and that variety of shots but, until you learn it, it doesn't jump out at you. It's so natural as a viewer you don't think about it.
great video and very insitful. I am someone very new to film making and and going to take all these points on board. thanks a million. love the channel 😁
On the walking part of the video, is the editing at 100% speed or do you slow down the video (80%, more, less) ? The speed seems to be slow and I do like to effect that's make. Thanks. Nice video I'll try to keep in mind every tips
I love your videos! Did you get the skater to do multiple takes? How do you get the variety of shots (wide, medium, close) while shooting in an impromptu environment?
love this dude, ive really been trying to get as many angles and shots as i can so its good to know im trying the right things (: ill add your tips to my sri lanka travel videos!
Story of my life! spent a week vacation in CO and made a real emphasis on filming, only to find out i had way too little variation in my shots to give my video any depth. Great tips, especially the wide/med/tight process!
Excellent advice here :) I mostly film action/extreme sports and travel films so these issues are very familiar to me. However, often I'm filming spontaneous action that I'm not really directing so I don't get a chance to shoot multiple angles or takes of the same moment or action. That's why I like to use several cameras to get a wide shot on a tripod, some midrange movement shots with a gimbal and POV footage with an action camera mounted to the athlete/subject. Close ups you can sometimes stage by yourself later. Creativity solves a lot. Still I would love to shoot more directed scenes like this one you did in this video. Really dig the build up and whole structure of it! Kiitos hyvästä videosta :)
Exactly, being a one man crew means you usually need to hustle and improvise a lot to get the shots you need. Sometimes I even set up a drone flying around a point of interest by itself so I get one more movement shot without having to operate an extra camera. Oh how I love todays tech that enables me to do so much more than was possible just a few years back!
I am learning a lot from this channel... thanks matty... Last year I had to shoot a promo video for our college, it was not much planned one... We were lucky enough to shoot it in different cameras which gave us considerable footages for editing... But when shooting in different camera, color correction becomes a big pain ( for non professionals like us 😊😊 )
hello ! great work ! I am very tempted by the sigma 18 35 but I already have the canon 24 70mm II with a T smart adapter form metabone. Do you think it worths to buy the sigma ? Thanks man !
Do you shoot the slow mo in 60 and then slow down to 30 ? Whats the best frame rate to shoot when you go from regular, to slow, then regular in one take?
Who else started up filming an action sport???
Right here! Skate & downhill MTB
MTB here as well
Mee with Longboard videos on Intagram :)

What an awesome video! The skating sequence was so cool. It’s evident you put a ton of work in these tutorials. Thanks so much.
it was super helpful to be reminded to have wide, medium, and closeups of the same action. That actually helped a ton
New sub here! Great video!! When you're getting footage of an event or "scene" and you want to get coverage of an action. Awesome video man - so helpful! Love how you used the video of your friend skating as an example. Really appreciate the help!
the reflection of the logo in the lake is amazing!!

Thank you!
thank you so much for showing rollerblading. I am so sick of how much skateboarding I am seeing lately. and great video, keep up the good work.
Travel Feels is the best! Your advice has helped me grow my own youtube channel into what it is today!
Loved this video. Super helpful. Thanks for hitting on cutting from shot to shot and keeping a variation from wide to tight. That was very helpful!
Awesome practical advice! I'm really enjoying your channel as a relatively new subscriber. I keep coming back and you have great content Matti.
This is really useful advice. Glad I found your channel. 10 years on from film school and I'm just getting back into it, so this really helps. Thanks for sharing!
You are doing an extraordinary job. Thank you very much for your inspiration and guidance.
Just wanted to let you know that, I Absolutely Love ALL Your Videos, keep up the good work. Enjoyed every clip! Thank you for sharing!

What a gem! Thank you so much for this TravelFeels!
Great video! Thanks for creating these TravelFeels! Super helpful. Keep up the amazing work as well. Whats the song used during the skating part? Can't locate it anywhere!
Hey Matti! Your style of explaining is just amazing, keep up the great content and work!
Matti, you are the best - Thanks for sharing this!
Yea thats tricky. I would say try to travel with someone but then you could also setup shots that you walk through or something like that
Any tips for when traveling with a GF who doesn't have good filming sense? When I ask her to record me doing something, it ends up looking terrible lol. For this reason, I'm not in my videos often.
Dean Sonetirot Bwahaha Dean, same here lol. I mainly film my GF walking in front of me lool. But she starts to develop a sense for the camera. It comes with time
Do what Casey Niestat does. He pretty much sets up his camera in random spots and films himself.
That's a good question. I tried to do that and always feel like the result is pretty boring. I think the only certainty is that a Gimbal is essential, it gives you much more flexibility with movements.
Great Video, very well explained, i will use your advices , what is the name of the music you used ?
Great advice! Thanks for sharing with us on how to create better storyboards and see different points of view when filming!
This is some really great advice. I can't tell you how many times I go to edit my footage and find it's not enough to get the feel I wanted. I'm going to be drilling this into my head so whenever I go out, I get the most varied shots! gotta capture it all ;)
May I ask please what the sound track is ? Great Vlog and well edited to the music. Thank you.
It's all about setting the mood and make the viewer experience and get the same feeling the same as you.
everytime i watch your videos i learn something new ♥ thank you for sharing this informations with us.
This is awesome! I need to practice the concept of coverage. I want to be as prepared as possible for my upcoming trip to Europe!
Great video. I struggle a lot with this so I'm going to try these tips when I'm next shooting!!
Great tips here! I like how you did a medium and close up shot as he walks up the steps and the little portrait moment at the end. What do you call these profile/portfolio edits? I really like them as an idea
Matti thank you so much for the tips I get like this sometimes that I don’t know what to film and these tips were very helpful
Thanks for the pointers! I decided to teach myself how to make videos and your channel is a great help!
Huge thanks for the tips mate! I'm off on a seven-week cross-Canada starting Saturday and will be sure to use these as I film!!
Hey! I'm pretty amazed by the quality! Do you use any ND-filters to shoot during daytime at wide aperture to achieve shallow DOP (obviously to keep your shutter 50/60 with accordance to 24/30 FPS)? Thanks in advance for reply
Is the slow motion sequence is recorded 4k? or 1080p but upsize it to 4k res? Nice infos! Thanks bro as always!
1080 upscaled. Thanks!
Hey Matt, question about coverage for other types of videos. What about something like a talk show? What angles and coverage would you do for that? Thanks man!
Awesome tips.....Will be great for my Maui trip coming up soon! Thanks!
Should i be shooting in auto or manual?
Thanks always learning to make my travel channel bigger and bigger.
probably the most valuable tips!
what would you do for music sessions, especially if the song needs to start quite early so nobody loses interest?
hey man I'm 14 years old and I'm an aspiring filmmaker. I started watching your videos a month ago, and I learned more than I had in that month, than I had in the month of film school I did.

So much great information in this video, Matti. Thank you!
obvious information but super cool to be reminded of individual process and building more creativity. Great video!
great video and very insitful. I am someone very new to film making and and going to take all these points on board. thanks a million. love the channel 😁
That was one of your best - excellent Matti...tchau.
Thank you for video! Can you please tell me what are the best settings for 4k video on iphone 6s+? Like what is the best fps to film with?
Very nice insights on what to pay attention to when filming!
Your're channel is going to do really well, you have a good concept!
Excellent, excellent, excellent tips! Thanks so much :)
On the walking part of the video, is the editing at 100% speed or do you slow down the video (80%, more, less) ? The speed seems to be slow and I do like to effect that's make. Thanks. Nice video I'll try to keep in mind every tips

Great Video! Are these films (for example 2,35:1) in this format or in 16:9 with black bars? Sorry for my bad english.
Yea the rollerblade edit was in 2:35 the rest is in 16:9
Thanks bud, love the way you illustrated this 👌

This is just amazing....found all the advices really helpful...keep going bro...
Thanks broo, this video is open my mind.. sometime iam going out and dont know what shots i need.
at 1:50 was the shot at 60 fps and slowed down ? how do you achieve this slow smooth cinematic look while recording and post production ?
So good! Thanks for sharing some killer ideas with the UA-cam fam!
Loving your content more and more! Are you constantly mixing up your frame rate for slow mo and normal speed shots?
one of the best channel on youtube university
Thanks Matti- you rock!
This guy is good. Knows his stuff! Subbed.
This is really good stuff! Thank you for all you do!

Adventuregrapher your channel is so good! Cant wait to edit videos like you!!!
Thanks for the awesome sharing of your knowledge and experience. Keep up the great work!
Maaan! Your tutorial is amazing! Thanks for giving your insights
I am learning a lot from this channel... thanks matty...
Last year I had to shoot a promo video for our college, it was not much planned one...
We were lucky enough to shoot it in different cameras which gave us considerable footages for editing...
But when shooting in different camera, color correction becomes a big pain ( for non professionals like us 😊😊 )
+Creative Mansion yep that's part of film making. But it gets easier and easier
What normally should I do. Film wide then tight then ......(i mean in order ) or should i mix them ?
fantastic advice - and great presentation!
Great Vid, we are certainly going to pay attention to this when we travel!
This is sick, going to try and apply what you said in my next edit!
so dope! always good to be reminded of this!
hello ! great work !
I am very tempted by the sigma 18 35 but I already have the canon 24 70mm II with a T smart adapter form metabone. Do you think it worths to buy the sigma ?
Thanks man !
The things that you'd been telling is so important. Thank you for advices.
+Mark Fedorenko I'm glad you think so too!
Do you shoot the slow mo in 60 and then slow down to 30 ? Whats the best frame rate to shoot when you go from regular, to slow, then regular in one take?
Top tips, keep them coming. That shelving unit is nice too. :)
I genuinely can't imagine what these modern videographers would do without slow-motion.
That was very useful, I learned a lot from your channel and I can't wait to implement it in my videos. One day I hope to be as good as you.
+A-jay sweet man! Keep at it!
hello, Thx a lot for ur videos ... Please did u film in 60p or 120p ? Thx
Best video ever! I used your tips for a skateboarding video, and I am impressed haha great content man! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
