Grandissimo Bonzo! Mitici Led Zeppelin!
Except for one minor detail: Plant should NEVER have opened with it live. Not if he wasn't going to warm up and set his voice first anyway. This is one of his better sounding vocals from the '73 era (although likely VERY cleaned up by Page before release)... if you listen to any of the bootlegs from '73 and '75 as well as live aid '85, he's always clearly not warmed up and ready for it. Any of the shows in which he did it much later in the set (or even as an encore), MUCH better voice. That's any of the '71 and '72 shows, '77, '79, '80, Knebworth '90, solo '94, Page/Plant '95-'98, and even the handful from '01-'02 era I believe. By the '02 and after, starting in '14 I believe, he lowers the key of the music, but still MUCH better voice.
@@brentwerley6762 Yep, this song (and many other songs in this live album/movie) feature overdubs. One particularly noticeable overdub is this version of Rock and Roll's opening line - "It's been a long time since...". This line is a studio overdub featured in the original 1976 concert movie, and you can tell because you can actually hear the real live vocals of this line in the original 1976 live album movie soundtrack. Why the TSRTS movie and its soundtrack had different versions of songs will forever be a perplexing mystery. Interestingly, the 2008 live album remaster actually uses the stronger overdubbed vocals from the 1976 movie as opposed to the real but weaker 1976 live album vocals. To be honest, I don't mind the overdubs - they do improve the songs that feature them, instead it's the cuts they made in songs to make them fit in the movie that annoy me. And yes, I agree that Rock and Roll was not an easy set opener for Plant. The Song Remains The Same (the song) was a far better opener for Plant (not for Page though - it's a really hard guitar song) but at the same time I never really liked it being used as an opener because that would mean that there would be no Rain Song later in the set or at the very most, it wouldn't be connected to TSRTS as it always should have been.
Not only are they talented beyond words, but their stage presence??!!! JEEZ! I always hear radio stations refer to them as "The Mighty Led Zeppelin". Man, that's an understatement.

I just realized something very simple about this group; they are extremely confident in themselves via their music. It is on full display here. It can't just be the music we like.
Plant has said the same comment in interviews. "We had a humbled arrogance amongst us. When we hit the stage I knew I had the best guys behind me. When my singing was up to their standards, they knew they had the right voice for the group. Some critics have confused our confidence with conceit. They might have been right at times. After all, there was a period when we were the best fucking band on the planet."
At that time videos were still shot on analog film, which actually has a pretty high resolution compared to some digital cameras even nowadays. That's why some old movies/concerts can be remastered to 4k.
@@_kurohana That's because the analog film also doesn't have real pixels, but rather film grain and by the early 70s the color film technology was already more than 30 years old so the quality was already there. This looks also to be shot on either 16mm (super 16) or 35mm (aka your regular photo film, which is also used for motion picture) film, which is much better than the super 8 (8mm film). Analog has also made quite a little renaissance in the recent years and even bigger movies like Oppenheimer were at least partially shot on analog film. What's even crazier is, that there is still research and development behind analog film making them even better than 10 years ago!
I'm 21 years old and led zeppelin is one of my favorite bands, they have good music and are rock icons. I would have liked to witness one of their concerts live.
I saw them 4 times live. The 1st time I saw them I sat in the front row In a 2000 seat' theater. Changed my 13 year old self forever. I'm an old broad now and I don't care because I got to see the best bands, lol!
@@doubletake1238 They may not have been great often. But, they were great @ Cobo Hall in 1973. I've seen 'em all & these guys were one of the greatest live shows I've EVER seen.
They were by far the greatest live band in the world for a 3-year stretch from 1970 to 1972 (See: Royal Albert Hall 1970, MSG 1970, Belfast 1971, Osaka 1971, L.A. Forum 1972). After that it was all downhill. Robert lost his voice in 1973 from smoking and singing too much without resting, but the rest of the band were still playing great. The concert(s) in this video (MSG 1973) have the band in their absolute peak as an instrumental trio. Didn't stay that way for long - In 1975, Jimmy broke his ring finger and never fully regained his touch while Robert caught the flu. It didn't help that the band still continued on with these injuries and sicknesses without rescheduling their 1975 U.S. Tour, just listen to their Indianapolis concert that year and it SHOWS that the band was in no state to be performing. The 1977 concerts featured a Plant who had almost fully recovered his singing voice. He couldn't do his siren wails from 1970 anymore, but he didn't have to worry about voice cracks and sore throats anymore. It also had Bonham at his absolute peak as a drummer. Unfortunately, it also featured a Page in the depths of a severe heroin addiction (one of the band's concerts that year had to be paused temporarily because Jimmy had literally lost so much weight that his clothes were starting to slip off onstage). It's a wonder that Jimmy could even wear a guitar at that point, especially for 3 whole hours at each concert. 1979 only had 4 concerts, and miraculously 3 of them were good. Both of the band's 1979 Copenhagen shows were great and the band's first performance at Knebworth that year was excellent, but the band's last performance in Knebworth was horrible. Legend has it that the band spent the entire day prior partying with the Rolling Stones and came onstage the next day drunk and high without any sleep. The band's 1980 concerts could barely be even considered as Led Zeppelin concerts - they changed the setlist and cut out a lot of the band's iconic songs. On top of that, Bonham regressed massively from 1977 due to his alcohol abuse and they actually had to cancel one show because Bonham legit passed out from drinking too much. Couple that with Page's addiction and you have a band that sounded more like a bunch of middle-aged men doing a bad Zeppelin tribute band than actual Zeppelin.

I saw Zeppelin three times, twice were incredible shows but the 85 Live Aid show was bad. I just felt bad for so many in the crowd that day that was seeing Zeppelin for the first time, and heard how great they were, and probably were a bit disappointed.
Rock and Roll will never have it this good again. Ever. All of them are the greatest on their instruments, or close to it. Jimmy Page has two left but gets the mostest out of his movements to be one of the greatest showmen in Rock.

@@marywhite7341 Yeah, we have a similar taste. Atom Heart is a great album too. I'd put Gilmour as the gretest guitar solo master, and Jimmy as the greatest guitar riff master. I mean the Kashmir riff is just something else. I am extremely obsesed with the Kashmir riff. The greatest riff of all time, never will be a greater one.

British bands continue to be an inspiration to the world 🇬🇧
I was at this concert !! It was off the chain just fantabulous, I can never forget!!!❤
Lucky bastard
What was it like there? Did it smell at all like substances, or weed because I heard that it reeked of that throughout the night. Also are you in any of the parts where it pans over to the crowd?
Everyone n anyone yea, mos def high as kites including myself, no doubt!!!
So awesome! Jimmy Page ❤ his style and swagger is unmatched!
I’m 57. I think that may be the best version I have ever heard
Greatest live band ever?
Gotta love Page's old live outfits.
Like Elvis who can't dance.
It has been a long time. This song is like a good whiskey.

@@calummackenzie6403 - There is an 'e' in the good ones. Whisky might as well be mezcal. But then mezcal is usually good & not drunk by snobs.
I love John Paul Jones so much. I mean, I love all four members of Led Zeppelin, but John Paul Jones is my favourite. Put on your headphones and up the bass. Man, that thumping bass line of Jonesy is just phenomenonal.
The British made waves in the world of music.
No tricks no self glorification just pure talent.Their names will never be forgotten.

Best Rock And Roll song of all time (change my mind)
Free bird…but this is pretty good! Sunshine of your Love… White Room… All Right Now…so many great songs! I’m 72 so….late sixties early seventies had the BEST MUSIC EVER
Jeannie With The Dark Blue Eyes, Girl And A hotrod, Summertime Blues, and Be-Bop-A-Lula are all smokin'.
Dripping with groove and man the gals vocals are friggin top shelf. Cozy was in tip top shape here. Sure miss him. What a treat finding this was. Stellar performance
I was aT that concert. Four encores.
Incredible energy that you don’t see anymore. I had all their songs going through my head for months.
Probably one of the best concerts ever
Wished I was there also bill... I'm so jealous
🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
HI!!! Bill.........from Montréal. I remember the concert in Montréal back in 1973 ( the same tour,) and they start with rock and roll. That was the best open song for a concert, and WHAT A CONCERT. The best opening song that I hear with birds of prey by Uriah Heep ( it was another concert) and God know's that I seen a lot of concerts, but I will never forget this song in concert. I was simply lucky to be 17 years old in 1973.Thank's god for the shows (yes, I seen LZ 2 times) have a nice day.
Yeah I miss that energy too. The coke today just isn't the same.
He's in my top three and he's the last one standing. Roy Clark and Jeff Beck are gone. James Marshall and John Scofield then Ray Vaughan and Vernon Reid.....oh sorry I could go on for a while.
Jimmy's dancing gives me life. 😀
BEST BAND EVER.
No other band has ever come close.
Stones are up there with them although slightly more blues the stones
@@jimmyf1446 The Stones made songs, many of which were very good. Zeppelin made music.
my faves:
Sympathy For the Devil on Get Yer Yayas Out
Gimmie Shelter
Heartbreaker
Ten Thousand Light Years From Home .... this is borderline hypnosis music.
2120 South Michigan Avenue ...okay, this one is music
Rush?

Grandissimo Bonzo! Mitici Led Zeppelin!
I was 5 years old when this was recorded. Now almost 50 years later still listening to this legendary band.
I saw them in Seattle back in '72.......WHAT A CONCERT1!!
Almost 50 years ago but still gives me goosebumps everytime i watch it! One of the most epic opening song in rock history!
this footage is incredible.
Yep ❤😂🎉
I saw them open with this song in Houston and they tore it a new one! Best show I ever saw and I've seen a million!
Greatest rock band in history. Nothing will ever beat this.

I just realized something very simple about this group; they are extremely confident in themselves via their music. It is on full display here. It can't just be the music we like.
So much talent there.
A well oiled machine imo

This footage is 50 years old and still compares to every modern concert video out there today
Sad to say, but they weren't great live often. If you loved the band, fine, but way better live acts out there from that era.
@@doubletake1238
They may not have been great often.
People like you are why the best bands of the 1970’s will stand the test of time like Mozart and Beethoven have.
50 years later, and it doesn't get any better than that. Sheer, true rock and roll!
uh yeah uh yeah 😛
That’s out of nature, I’m glad I saw them when I was a kid in Marrakech since that day I’m obsessed

What was it like? Were you close to the stage or did you sit far back? And if it smell like drugs there?
Isn't it refreshing to see an audience without cell phones? Just having fun with some good time rock and roll. I am so lucky to have seen Led Zeppelin not once but twice. Both concerts were pure magic!
Amen brother ✌
Just livin’ in the moment...
I wouldn't bring my phone to a concert I'd leave it in the car! Back then you could smoke a joint and cigarette inside or outside now big brother says no, only you can buy a 10 dollar glass of beer 😠
I saw Zeppelin three times, twice were incredible shows but the 85 Live Aid show was bad. I just felt bad for so many in the crowd that day that was seeing Zeppelin for the first time, and heard how great they were, and probably were a bit disappointed.
You are lucky and I am jealous!
Rock and Roll will never have it this good again. Ever. All of them are the greatest on their instruments, or close to it. Jimmy Page has two left but gets the mostest out of his movements to be one of the greatest showmen in Rock.
Whenever I feel depressed or feel disconnected I watch this video and it puts me right back to the good place I need to be in.
I was one of the very lucky guys to have seen them two nights on the trot in the Famous Green Playhouse Glasgow. Now almost 69 years old and still listening to them as though it was only yesterday, All four were the ultimate musicians,
This is why you will never be as cool as your grandparents.
