Definitely listen to “When the Levee Breaks”. It’s an old blues standard, but Zep made it their own. And you will probably recognize the drum beat in the opening bars - it’s one of the most sampled grooves in modern music.
The way to listen to this properly is play side one, (starting with this song, of course) all the way through Stairway, flip the record a nd listen to that. Then change the bong water...
This is one of the songs where Jon Bonham (the drummer) plays in a different time signature than the rest of the band is playing. It's difficult to do, not just for the drummer but the rest of the band as well. As a listener, it makes it hard to find the groove on your first time through the song. But after a few times through it, you feel the groove a lot more and you think, "how did they come up with that?".
“It sounds like there’s two different drummers and two different beats.” Say hello to John “Bonzo” Bonham, the original power drummer and OG GOAT on drums.
One day at work I was walking past my boss and singing quietly, "I don't know, but I been told....." My boss finished, "A big legged woman ain't got no soul" He was an awesome boss.
Uh oh.. now you've stumbled on one of the most iconic rock songs of ALL TIME . .. few are better .. very few .. this is a song that will still be played 100 years from now . .
Led Zeppelin was/is an influence on everyone. This was one of the 1st albums I bought that wasn't The Beatles specifically because of this song. The technique is call & response. It was unusual because the call was vocal and the response was instrumental. There are 3 sections (instrumentally) which are fairly simple when you look at the tabs. The timing and cadence make it quite a bit more complex, but still not too hard to play. Jay mentioned a few things that made Led Zeppelin a cut above almost everyone else. John Bonham's drumming is in a class by itself. Robert Plant's voice is what every rocker wishes he had. John Paul Jones could play just about anything and was/is a genius in terms of creating very complex time signatures and changes between them within the same piece. And then there's Jimmy Page. Besides being a guitarist extraordinaire, he was a masterful producer. One of the things he did on Black Dog and many others was double and triple tracking a line. That's why it sounds like there's more than one guitar even though he's the only one playing guitar. (David Gilmore of Pink Floyd is another master of this.) And he often plays more than one part. It's as captivating and electrifying now as it was all those years ago. Never gets old.
I don't know enough about musical techniques to explain what I hear. SERIOUSLY thanks for the breakdown. I was a teenager 1969 - 1970s I just loved their music. I'm old enough now that I've been going back to find out why I really liked these songs. Thank you

I agree but I prefer the studio version of Since I've Been Loving You and I believe that Jordan may have reacted to the live version!! I really think that Robert Plant vocals on the studio version have never been better!!! When he does that high scream near the end of the song it makes my skin just become Goosebumps City!!!!
Yeah, the studio version of that song - which I think has the best solo Jimmy Page ever did and one of the greatest blues songs every recorded - is the most underrated LZ song in their entire catalog.

"Thank you" has been one of my favorites for decades. I used part of the song as my h.s. senior quote. I also fought one of my English professors because I used Led Zep as an example of modern poetry. The words to "thank You" (not the actual song) made him change his mind (and my grade!).

Led Zeppelin Going to California is one of their best songs . You want acoustic guitar and a mandolin , its mellow song. People only think of Zeppelin as hard rock. I suggest you watch a live version. Alot of the song is a reference to Joni Mitchell. Robert Plant ( lead singer) thought she was special , which she was. I hope you take my advice You WILL NOT be disappointed. Led Zeppelin is one of those bands to watch live. They sound as good if not better live.

Great reaction. Led Zeppelin set the bar for what a rock band could be in the 70's, and after that, most bands didn't even try since Zeppelin was so amazing. All four members were exceptional, and together they were unstoppable. Interesting about them is that their guitar play (Jimmy Page) was also their producer. So what you hear is unique, and exactly what he wanted the band to sound like.
I agree that you should listen to “When the Levee Breaks.” You will immediately recognize the opening drum beat because so many Hip-Hop artists have used it in their songs. It’s got an awesome groove too.
I like you. I'm from switzerland, my brother in law is from los Angeles. I really never thouth, that you dont know this song. One of my absolutely favourite.
What I love about Led Zeppelin the most is every song is like a new ice cream that you just discovered ! When I first started listening to these guys 50 yrs ago.....I was in PURE heaven!
Watching you guys react to songs reminds me of how we used to really listen to songs when I was growing up, you would put a record on and sit down and listen, maybe check out the art work in the album and read the liner notes, but as a teenager I used to really listen, nowadays you have music on while cleaning, studying, working etc but the closest is driving around in your car and just listening.it doesn’t seem like people listen to music that way anymore, enjoy watching you do that .
Agreed.. go buy the album and I was good for 6 hours, holed up in my room, listening over and over. Check out the art work, sometimes they had pics, posters or lyrics.. ahh, those were the days! I know every lyric to lots of them..
Musically, the beginning of heavy metal rock... Robert's vocals gave many the blueprint for rock's "crying/screaming' style. Jimmy Page kills it on guitar and John Bonham's drumming led to Neil Peart of Rush
What about John Paul Jones? As usual, he is given short shrift. He is the one who was responsible for writing the main riff of this song. Show some respect!
There are so many great songs by LZ. Can't go wrong with most of songs. If I listed out all the songs I would suggest, it would be better to just say pick any song off any album and you probably won't be disappointed.
Led Zeppelin albums are meant to play back to back. Their hits are endless. They were always evolving. I was going to see them in concert with my uncle who saw them multiple times. He was going to splurge and get us front and center... Bonham died! I was devastated! 😓😫
They couldn't come up with a title for this song, but there was a black labrador retriever hanging out in the recording studio when they were recording it, so they called it Black Dog. That's the kind of thing that happens when you try to come up with a song title while you're stoned.
@@damnyancey nope. The song title definitely refers to a neighbors dog who used to pay visits to Headley Grange while the band was recording the album. That's a pretty well documented story.
This band have the greatest rock guitarist, vocalist, drummer (sadly deceased) and bass player/multi instrumentalist in the history of rock music. You could play 100tracks if theirs, they are that good.
I've seen a clip a while back of Robert Plant singing with Led Zep , in Paris - when he was about 21. Just an astonishing performance for one so young.
you guys also reacted to “ Whole Lotta Love” where Amber said something like oh he loves her so much … Then realized what the song was really about. LOL
Oh, my favorite Zeppelin song. This and Whole Lotta Love. Some will say the riff in Black Dog was inspired by Peter Greens playing on Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well. 👍
Robert Plant is the lead singer for Led Zeppelin. It is funny you mentioned Geddy Lee from Rush as when Rush started out in the early 70's Geddy Lee's voice was compared to Robert Plant. Check out Best I Can from their Fly by Night album. This is one of my favourite Zep songs ❤ Cheers
@@MsAppassionata I love both bands and I love both both Robert Plant's and Geddy Lee's voices. Each suite their bands musical style. Geddy's voice you either love or not. It does polarize people. Love them both. ✌
Congratulations OK & great taste with anything & everything Led Zeppelin.Kashmir, Stairway to Heaven, When the Levee Breaks… all great ones to try as well.
Zeppelin, Joplin and Floyd were the three prongs of serious Rock in the day. Loved them all and enjoyed them to no end. Still sitting on the top of my music charts.
It's so great to watch these vids. I've blasted Led Zep in my car and my headphones for 30 years now. I discovered them 10 years after they broke up. It's amazing how fucking good life is in those moments you are blasting Led Zep. What a gift. I'm glad these guys get it.
It's so hard for me to imagine that there are people out there that don't know Led Zeppelin. When I was a little kid in the late '70s, living a super sheltered life with my ultra-conservative christian parents, we lived in a small town with no radio stations, and only church music and classical music were allowed in the house. I heard rock music in movies and during trips to the city, but it was forbidden for us to have at home. Until... One day I was snooping in my parents' room when they were out (kids in the '70s got left home alone all the time. It was great), and found my mother's record collection. The Byrds, Beatles, Gordon Lightfoot, The Mamas and the Papas, the Stones, Supertramp, many more, and... Led Zeppelin! I remember being blown away by the jacket for Led Zeppelin III (fans know what I'm talking about). Every time my parents left the house, I'd move as fast as I could to that record box and grab one to put on the stereo. I listened to rock music in secret for the next 13 years - never got caught - until I was old enough to move out of the house. And one of my first purchases in my first place; a stereo, followed by every Zeppelin album ever recorded, which I've been listening on regular rotation for decades now. I know every Zeppelin song forward and backward (literally backward - in the '80s, the church I was in told us that if we played rock music backwards, we'd hear satanic messages. So naturally my buddies and I rigged a tape deck to play cassettes in reverse). Anyway, glad you've stumbled acorss them. Better late then never, but whatever you do, don't keep it hidden from the kids!
I'm a preacher's daughter, from the "Bible Belt". So, I know all about that stuff. But, Mom & Dad were more interested in what was on TV! No laugh-in, no sexual scenes, etc. But, since I was an only child, there was no one to tell on me about my music! I am just glad they never looked inside my album covers & read the words. I remember an Elton John song with the ward "Damn" in it. I would just talk real loud so they did not hear it or turn down the radio just before he said the word. I knew that my Dad & his 6 brothers all used to play instruments - grandpa - championship fiddler, grandma- excellent guitarist - all Ingalls family very musical. BUT IT WAS LIKE YOU FINDING YOUR MOM'S RECORDS when I heard my Dad, the preacher, telling my only child - a son - excellent musician - that Dad & his brothers used to play together all the time at the "honkey tonk". I overheard him & ran into my parents room in total surprise! I said You Did What??????? And people were Dancing & Drinking!!!!!! My Dad got this big grin on his face and sheepishly said, "Oh I never told you that before? TOO FUNNY! I Love You Daddy - RIP w/Jesus I'll see you soon enough!
Led Zeppelin is widely considered the greatest Rock band in history for a reason. Well, reasons. Everyone is one of the greatest ever in their instrument and Robert Plant is always on best singer list. I really think the deeper cuts you will even enjoy. 10 years gone, when the levee breaks, four sticks is interesting because the drummer uses to six in each hand.
Best voice ever! That's what's up with the Led, best singer, best guitarist, best drummer, etc. If not the best, it could be argued or no one's better. Glad you're noticing the drummer. If you pay attention to the drummer you'll catch how much he is actually weaving a ton of style into the rythm while making it sound so simple and you'll catch all the other pieces of the band. "Since I've Been Lovin You" is the most Led Zeppelin song there is. It's what they're all about!
In 2005, a British radio station did a poll to create the ultimate rock group. Listeners voted on their favorite singer, guitarist, bassist, and drummer. The four members of Led Zeppelin won 🤷🏼♂️
This was my High School Football Teams song before we walked out to play every home game.....We would crank this so loud so the visitors could hear it in their locker room too. 1977-81
One of my fav LZ songs along with Over The Hills and Far Away, Ramble On, Hey Hey What Can I Do and Rain Song. Black Dog always makes me laugh as it it not about a dog, yet is named after one. You gotta watch “since I’ve been loving you” live at Madison square garden 1973. Greatest performance ever.
Great reaction. This is my favorite Led Zeppelin song.
You couldn't imagine a band as big as this these days. They were a huge part of the phenomenal era of 60's and 70's music!
Yep NO LZ for the 80s
Best, most important rock band ever! So much varied excellent influentical music. Deep dive!
They were, are and WILL ALWAYS BE the ultimate rock band…
I agree that you should listen to “When the Levee Breaks.” You will immediately recognize the opening drum beat because so many Hip-Hop artists have used it in their songs. It’s got an awesome groove too.
I like you. I'm from switzerland, my brother in law is from los Angeles. I really never thouth, that you dont know this song. One of my absolutely favourite.
Back in the early 70's I was in high school and we use to ride around town and put some Led Zeppilin on . And go to McDonald's. Good memories!!! LOL
Comes from a classic Zeppelin album. Every song on it is a prized gem.
My absolute favorite Led Zeppelin is "Fool in the Rain." It's one hell of a groove, and the story has an amazing punchline.
Yes!!! 👊🏼👍🏻
Yes! Excellent suggestion!
I stand in the rain 'til I'm breathless, when I'm breathless I run 'til I drop...
There are so many great songs by LZ. Can't go wrong with most of songs.
If I listed out all the songs I would suggest, it would be better to just say pick any song off any album and you probably won't be disappointed.
You can never go wrong with ANY Led Zeppelin song!
Led Zeppelin albums are meant to play back to back. Their hits are endless. They were always evolving. I was going to see them in concert with my uncle who saw them multiple times. He was going to splurge and get us front and center... Bonham died! I was devastated! 😓😫
I was set to see LZ in 1980 too. Bonham died and I was utterly devastated...
They couldn't come up with a title for this song, but there was a black labrador retriever hanging out in the recording studio when they were recording it, so they called it Black Dog. That's the kind of thing that happens when you try to come up with a song title while you're stoned.
Probably not true. It's about a prostitute.
@@damnyancey nope. The song title definitely refers to a neighbors dog who used to pay visits to Headley Grange while the band was recording the album. That's a pretty well documented story.
@@damnyancey No it isn’t. Where on earth did you hear that?!
This couple is adorable.
From Led Zeppelin 4. One of the greatest rock and roll albums ever.
This band have the greatest rock guitarist, vocalist, drummer (sadly deceased) and bass player/multi instrumentalist in the history of rock music. You could play 100tracks if theirs, they are that good.
One of my favorite rock vocalists ever, and you have notice how he almost uses his voice as another instrument in the band.
Is it just my phone, or is the sound going in and out on both their videos today?
Not just you. Sound is bad.
Can't go wrong with Zepplin! So may great songs!
I've seen a clip a while back of Robert Plant singing with Led Zep , in Paris - when he was about 21. Just an astonishing performance for one so young.
Robert Plant was the only singer for Zep from 1968-1980, it's not like he made a special appearence.
Yes I've seen almost all their performances...even the bootlegs...nobody comes close!

Probably thee best hard rock and roll band - ever. So many great songs.
you guys also reacted to “ Whole Lotta Love” where Amber said something like oh he loves her so much … Then realized what the song was really about. LOL
I just wish I can go back in time and listen to these songs for the first time ever...no going to lie I am a little jealous haha!!!
That voice, that riff, that song..... Zeppelin!
Do “Ramble On” next!!
Oh, my favorite Zeppelin song. This and Whole Lotta Love. Some will say the riff in Black Dog was inspired by Peter Greens playing on Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well. 👍
The most essential song would be Whole Lotta Love. Also Stairway to Heaven.
This and Stairway to Heaven are my fav Led Zeppelin songs.
The cadence you're referring to is the blues element in Rock. This song is pure R&B rock transitioning into electric rock.
That's Robert Plant. Tenor. When he sings, he goes off like a war siren.
Robert Plant is the lead singer for Led Zeppelin. It is funny you mentioned Geddy Lee from Rush as when Rush started out in the early 70's Geddy Lee's voice was compared to Robert Plant. Check out Best I Can from their Fly by Night album. This is one of my favourite Zep songs ❤
Cheers
They sound not a bit alike at all. Not a drop. There is zero sex to Geddy Lee’s voice.
@@sukie584 It was their really early work. To me they sound very different but others back thought there was a similarity.
Geddy Lee is very one-dimensional compared to Plant. You have to listen to various songs to realize Plant's capabilities.
I can’t stand Geddy Lee’s voice! It’s like fingernails scraping a blackboard to me. In my opinion he can’t hold a candle to the great Robert Plant.
Robert Plant is unmatched. Nobody has nor will have a voice like his.
Zeppelin, Joplin and Floyd were the three prongs of serious Rock in the day. Loved them all and enjoyed them to no end. Still sitting on the top of my music charts.
Greatest rock band ever!!!!
These kids parents weren't even born when Zepp was doing there thing, of course they won't know who they are.
That is an amazing story, and I can kinda relate. Thanks for sharing! 🤘
I remember an
Elton John song with the ward "Damn" in it.
This is such an iconic song it is one of my favorites.
You're absolutely right!
Seven Zep songs in, and you've barely scratched the surface. Hope you'll do "Ramble On" or "The Ocean" next. :)
Definitely one of my favorites about led Zeppelin love it ✌️❤️💯
You guys are on fire today! I sing this at karaoke, so fun to do. And Bringing on the Heartbreak is one of my favorite Def Leppard songs!
However, they do have an actual song about a dog called Bron-Y-Aur Stomp. Lovely song especially if you are a dog lover.
Ramble on
Is blackbird about a bird?
Love Led Zeppelin...should check out No Quarter, Stairway to Heaven, When The Levee Breaks, Thank you, Battle of Evermore
Dazed and confused, whole lotta love you must take a. listen to and watch them live. The performances are a show not to be missed. Led Zeppelin is all about the feeling.
John Bonham the drummer is a beast , R.I.P. John Bonham
…saw this- whoa…..had to stop❤️🎼❤️🎸🔥 Led Zeppelin! Great ! Love this journey of yours…music is universal 😎
this is why they are my favorite band..... I am so glad I grew up in this era.
Me to i was born Nov 1960 ,,, I was 10 when this HUGE Lp came out in 1971
@@theodoreritola7641 I was born 1954... great bands back in the 60's
"babe I'm gonna leave you" and "thank you" are my favorite zeppelin tunes. Definitely worth a listen
my mom before passing away at the age of 94. she passed 03--03-2019 . she loved this guys voice. it gave her chills down her spine. my mom loved all music.
You two are awesome! I love that you are really listening to the music/lyrics & enjoying classic rock. I wish more of the younger generations took the time to listen to where music came from the different genres etc. GOD Bless & enjoy Music's history! You two are true music lovers!
