The drums are on a different, counter rhythmic beat during some measures. Incredibly hard to do but Bonham nails it. That's why you're having trouble with it. The first time you hear the song it throws you off because you're so used to everything else you listen to being in sync. But this was experimental, bringing something to rock that was more commonplace in jazz.
I've had very musical, non-rock people tell me they are convinced that there is off-beat mistake in this song. No. Bonham is playing behind the beat the entire time and then "jumping it" for lack of a better term in spots.
drums are in 4/4, guitars and bass are in 5/4 at some point in every bar the whole thing seems to dismantle itself and that creates an incredible tension
Bonzo's drumming in this song is just incredible. He's holding the song together all the way through while the other instruments are doing their thing on another beat. Brilliantly written and performed piece of music. These guys never disappoint.

Brad, if you like a bluesy sound but with a song that can keep you in the groove... try When The Levee Breaks. Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock bands of all time. This song is a total vibe. If you listen to it straight through without stops, it makes more sense, musically. This song demonstrates the considerable talents of the late, great drummer John Bonham as well as the rhythmic greatness of the other members of the band. The rhythm shifts constantly, but Bonzo holds it together tightly in 4/4 as it rolls along. That start-stop thing in this song is called "Call and response" and was a somewhat common thing in blues music. In this case, the "call" is Robert Plant's vocal line and the "response" is the guitar riff that follows it. One thing you can say about Led Zeppelin is that no two of their songs sound the same.

The time signatures aren't that crazy (4/4 and 7/8) it's the way Bonham applied the beat to the riff. I would say that almost anyone else would have double or quadruple timed it. But played this slowly,it's bizarre.

I've listened to this song thousands of time since the mid 70's. It stands out because it is so different. They always mixed things up. Never could tell with Led Zeppelin.
This is an very old skool blues technique -- you stop playing your guitar (or whatever) while you sing a verse, and then play a refrain while not singing, then repeat, repeat, repeat, etc. Similar to a "call and response". Anyway, if it is any solace, I think this the only LZ song that follows that pattern to this degree.
Led Zeppelin! A vibe on its own. Songs definitely grow so much over time. I also find Robert Plants singing is so much like he's playing his own instrument. This song also emphasizes this a lot. The interplay of the instruments, back and forth, the space they leave for each other.

There is never enough that could be said about this band. Their style changed album to album. The videos from 68, 69 70 from Denmark and elsewhere, showcasing their first album are truly remarkable. No, they didn't write some of those early songs, but they made them into epic covers that can never be duplicated. They were 18 to 21 years old, and already had been serious seasoned musicians before they formed this band, and at that age..Jimmy Paige was a well regarded studio musician, by the time he was 20...and had played in the Yardbirds, a band that also featured Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton. The other three were all well renowned as well. John Paul Jones, who never gets enough credit, was a force before they formed, Plant and Bonham as well. It would take far too much time to fill it all in...I got to see them, once, and have seen almost every other formation, combinations of Plant and Paige, the band " the Firm" etc...live..and would go anytime. They could never be pigeon holed into one type of music genre....too good, too complex, at times too simple and graceful, and yet always just bad ass. There style of playing is one of the most attempted to copy ever by many many bands. Not talking sampled, literally playing, writing, singing style. There music inspires to this day.
You guys really should react to the studio version of "Since I've Been Loving You" off of the album "Led Zeppelin III". I think you'll gain a whole new understanding and appreciation of the bands music. Peace
+1 for In My Time Of Dying. One of my favourite Zep songs. Bonham's foot work throughout that song is amazing. One of the very few Zep songs i would recommend a studio version over a live version just so you can properly hear it.
The song is in 5/4 time as opposed to 4/4 time, which is what most rock songs are played in. The reason you’re having a hard time catching the rhythm of the song is that there is 1 extra beat per measure. John Bonham was one of the few rock drummers that played in a 5/4 time signature; another one is Ginger Baker of Cream.
giggles...Led Zeppelin never intended their music to be "a vibe". Their music suffers no cookie-cutter, pop music, blah blah blah, but instead exhibits a learning experience in musical composition. Good reaction. Auf Wiedersehen :-)
Exactly. I mean, there are plenty of LZ songs where there is a groove. But LZ wasn't/isn't always about just a groove and a vibe and 4/4 time. They experimented with genre, time signatures, instrumentation, everything. That's what makes them interesting and the GOAT of rock bands.
You 2 are stuck with the spirit of rock from the 70's with this & it's awesome! The decade I was born in(77). My whole family way listening to this music also. You 2 are being taken back to the past in time. This was when life wasn't so complicated amongst us.
This song flows like an abrupt waveform. If Brad relaxed and listened to it 10 times, he'd maybe feel that undulation and realize he was supposed to follow that rhythm. It's like any irregular timing immediately gets read as 'wrong' to him, whereas Lex seems to find it easier to be patient and relax and wait for the beat to emerge, rather than needing it immediately, before being able to relax. I hope he does learn that through doing this. He misses out on a lot she enjoys that he could enjoy too, if he just altered what he thought he was 'supposed' to do when listening (which is do nothing but listen). I think I watch this channel just to see if Brad will ever open up and listen to a song rather than treat it like an Agatha Christie mystery he's supposed to solve. :-)
It's amazing how we remember things when we were kid's like how big the world looks are how such a small seemingly insignificant memory sticks with us into adulthood
Robert Plants vocals have to be the greatest and probably most recognisable in all Rock Music. Absolute legend of Rock, he had it all back in the day, looks, voice, appeal, talent and all wrapped up in the biggest rock band of the era and probably of all time 👍
@ Brad and Lex. I like your honesty Brad - you're not afraid to say you don't like something. I watch a lot of 'reaction' videos, and you're the only one with the balls to do that! Keep up the good work.
One of the attractions of Zeppelin was their creativity within each songs. It’s not just formulaic same old same old. It’s more like Beethoven than Rolling Stones, even though it’s just blues on steroids.
My favorite Zeppelin song is "When the Levee Breaks". It's their take on an old bluesy folk song. You should really check it out. I think Brad would be able to groove to that one.
The guitar beat and the drum beat are in different time, but they match up every few bars. It gives the song an amazing conative dissonance. You think they must be out of time, then they hit, then they drag out again. It is kind of like listening to a lava lamp.
You two are very authentic…. This is why people like to watch reactions. Listen… and listen close…. There’s more than one direction to bob and weave. Salute
I am not normally a fan of the reaction genre but i truly enjoy this content. Just two music lovers experiencing new stuff in an honest open-minded manner. Some stuff they like. Some they don't. It's real. Enjoyable personalities too. Great channel.
Another masterpiece. This song is in 5/4 time Odd time signatures makes music interesting. Again, the rhythm section… Jones and Bonham hard to be bested or duplicated. This is a centennial event… once in 100 years.
One of the first metal bands along with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. People usually associate heaviness with darkness like Black Sabbath, but Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin had the heaviness that most bands didn't have back in the 70s, besides maybe some prog rock artists but they were all over the place.
The song was recorded in 1971. Back then, bands used to cover each others songs a lot. When they wrote Black Dog, they purposely made the rhythm of the hook in a weird time signature so that it was hard for other bands to do it. It's kinda in 11/4 time, but actually it is a bunch of measures of 3/4 and 2/4 strung together. It is very difficult for us mere guitar players to learn this song. The phrasing always comes out mechanical, but Jimmy Page (guitarist of Led Zeppelin) makes it sound so natural. Also... Side note: Us guitar players have been trying for years to find the amp or the FX pedal that sounds like this. Turns out that it is a direct input to the console. No amp. It is the sound of the electric guitar direct overloading the heck out of an old Neve or API console mic preamp.

You guys really should react to the studio version of "Since I've Been Loving You" off of the album "Led Zeppelin III". I think you'll gain a whole new understanding and appreciation of the bands music.
Peace
Lex you're a head banger
Admit it.🤘😎🤘
Welcome to the family
😁😁😁😁
Next LZ songs “In My Time of Dying” “Ten Years Gone” and “Fool in the Rain” please🙏🏻🙏🏻
+1 for In My Time Of Dying. One of my favourite Zep songs. Bonham's foot work throughout that song is amazing. One of the very few Zep songs i would recommend a studio version over a live version just so you can properly hear it.

First Zeppelin song I ever kind of learned...somehow they make this timing work.
Love y'all! Can you try Edgar Winters Group - Frankenstein 1973!?
The song is in 5/4 time as opposed to 4/4 time, which is what most rock songs are played in. The reason you’re having a hard time catching the rhythm of the song is that there is 1 extra beat per measure. John Bonham was one of the few rock drummers that played in a 5/4 time signature; another one is Ginger Baker of Cream.
giggles...Led Zeppelin never intended their music to be "a vibe".
Their music suffers no cookie-cutter, pop music, blah blah blah,
but instead exhibits a learning experience in musical composition.
This song has been listened to over and over and over again. Billions of times!
Fun fact: John Paul Jones, the bass/keyboard player wrote the main riff for this song.
The unjustly underrated member of Zeppelin.
@@jackgilchrist JPJ was a genius
One of the GREAT Led Zeppelin songs. I'm intrigued by your reaction. This is the song that got me to pick up a guitar.
Brad, stop reading the lyrics and just vibe with the music.
Lex gets it. Learn from her
Right on! Totally agree.

I have said exactly the same thing. Lex gets it. She knows how to appreciate good music
It's amazing how we remember things when we were kid's like how big the world looks are how such a small seemingly insignificant memory sticks with us into adulthood
Watching Lex's face come alive when guitar solos kick in is worth the subscription alone. Also, do more Rush
Robert Plants vocals have to be the greatest and probably most recognisable in all Rock Music. Absolute legend of Rock, he had it all back in the day, looks, voice, appeal, talent and all wrapped up in the biggest rock band of the era and probably of all time 👍
Now you should react to Robert Plant and Alison Krauss performing this live... completely different arrangement and vibe.
I agree that was a really good show they did when the levee breaks on that show as well I thought they were really good together vocally
O.M.G!!! Lex's thoughts about a song reminding her of zucchini bread almost made me fell of the couch! Best laugh I've had in a long time
Brad looks SO confused as to what this song is about!
@ Brad and Lex. I like your honesty Brad - you're not afraid to say you don't like something. I watch a lot of 'reaction' videos, and you're the only one with the balls to do that! Keep up the good work.
In my time of dying, led zeppelin studio is so great and layered you will love it!
One of the attractions of Zeppelin was their creativity within each songs. It’s not just formulaic same old same old. It’s more like Beethoven than Rolling Stones, even though it’s just blues on steroids.
This is one of my favorite songs. I used to listen to it over and over in one sitting.
Give Lex a decent guitar solo and her little smirk holds back her putting a big smile on.
Salute
That was some ferocious blues based hard rock. Blistering & nasty!
I am not normally a fan of the reaction genre but i truly enjoy this content. Just two music lovers experiencing new stuff in an honest open-minded manner. Some stuff they like. Some they don't. It's real. Enjoyable personalities too. Great channel.
Another masterpiece.
This song is in 5/4 time
Odd time signatures makes music interesting.
Again, the rhythm section… Jones and Bonham hard to be bested or duplicated. This is a centennial event… once in 100 years.
That's one thing with Led Zeppelin. All their songs take you on a journey. But no two songs sound the same.
Since I’ve been loving you ...The live performance best ever!!
Led Zeppelin is an experience, that you listen to over and over again. In my opinion they are the greatest rock band of all time.
I agree! Greatest rock band ever!
Also...
Side note:
Us guitar players have been trying for years to find the amp or the FX pedal that sounds like this. Turns out that it is a direct input to the console. No amp. It is the sound of the electric guitar direct overloading the heck out of an old Neve or API console mic preamp.
on one side there is a stable opinion with a basic imagination and on the other you have the unbridled imagination of a spirited heart. Thanks both of you.
