The drums are on a different, counter rhythmic beat during some measures. Incredibly hard to do but Bonham nails it. That's why you're having trouble with it. The first time you hear the song it throws you off because you're so used to everything else you listen to being in sync. But this was experimental, bringing something to rock that was more commonplace in jazz.

    • @JeffreyTheTaylor
      @JeffreyTheTaylor 3 роки тому +52

I've had very musical, non-rock people tell me they are convinced that there is off-beat mistake in this song. No. Bonham is playing behind the beat the entire time and then "jumping it" for lack of a better term in spots.

Brad, if you like a bluesy sound but with a song that can keep you in the groove... try When The Levee Breaks.
It was originally a country blues song recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929 about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Led Zeppelin did a version with their own take on it. It's got a great groove and might work for you.

Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock bands of all time. This song is a total vibe. If you listen to it straight through without stops, it makes more sense, musically. This song demonstrates the considerable talents of the late, great drummer John Bonham as well as the rhythmic greatness of the other members of the band. The rhythm shifts constantly, but Bonzo holds it together tightly in 4/4 as it rolls along. That start-stop thing in this song is called "Call and response" and was a somewhat common thing in blues music. In this case, the "call" is Robert Plant's vocal line and the "response" is the guitar riff that follows it.
One thing you can say about Led Zeppelin is that no two of their songs sound the same.

Two odd things going on with the rhythm:
    - the frequent stops before all the free vocal parts,
    - at some point, bass and guitar are fitting in like Lego pieces of length 9 in a construction where everything is 8. Not by squeezing, but by just shifting the next one an 1/8 note forward. To make this extra unlogical, the drums are playing a cozy 4/4 halftime as if nothing is happening. By doing so, stressed and unstressed in the 9-frase swaps every time, like a photo continuously swapping between negative and normal. If that all makes sense. :-)

That's the beauty, the lure, the magic and the very essence of John "Bonzo" Bonham!! Thank you sweetie for noticing and pointing that out! Many people notice that the beat is different, most musicians notice it but few others notice John Bonham's off-center licks but you nailed it, they sound outta place but yet they are perfect and dead on and you saw it, I'm seriously impressed with you!! I was a very young teenage musician when this song was popular and the drum licks of John Bonham mesmerized me in the '70's as it does today! There is never enough that could be said about this band. Their style changed album to album. The videos from 68, 69 70 from Denmark and elsewhere, showcasing their first album are truly remarkable. No, they didn't write some of those early songs, but they made them into epic covers that can never be duplicated. They were 18 to 21 years old, and already had been serious seasoned musicians before they formed this band, and at that age..Jimmy Paige was a well regarded studio musician, by the time he was 20...and had played in the Yardbirds, a band that also featured Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton. The other three were all well renowned as well. John Paul Jones, who never gets enough credit, was a force before they formed, Plant and Bonham as well. It would take far too much time to fill it all in...I got to see them, once, and have seen almost every other formation, combinations of Plant and Paige, the band " the Firm" etc...live..and would go anytime. They could never be pigeon holed into one type of music genre....too good, too complex, at times too simple and graceful, and yet always just bad ass. There style of playing is one of the most attempted to copy ever by many many bands. Not talking sampled, literally playing, writing, singing style. There music inspires to this day.

The song is in 5/4 time as opposed to 4/4 time, which is what most rock songs are played in. The reason you’re having a hard time catching the rhythm of the song is that there is 1 extra beat per measure. John Bonham was one of the few rock drummers that played in a 5/4 time signature; another one is Ginger Baker of Cream.

giggles...Led Zeppelin never intended their music to be "a vibe".
Their music suffers no cookie-cutter, pop music, blah blah blah,
but instead exhibits a learning experience in musical composition.
    Good reaction. Auf Wiedersehen :-)

Exactly. I mean, there are plenty of LZ songs where there is a groove. But LZ wasn't/isn't always about just a groove and a vibe and 4/4 time. They experimented with genre, time signatures, instrumentation, everything. That's what makes them interesting and the GOAT of rock bands.

This song flows like an abrupt waveform. If Brad relaxed and listened to it 10 times, he'd maybe feel that undulation and realize he was supposed to follow that rhythm. It's like any irregular timing immediately gets read as 'wrong' to him, whereas Lex seems to find it easier to be patient and relax and wait for the beat to emerge, rather than needing it immediately, before being able to relax. I hope he does learn that through doing this. He misses out on a lot she enjoys that he could enjoy too, if he just altered what he thought he was 'supposed' to do when listening (which is do nothing but listen). I think I watch this channel just to see if Brad will ever open up and listen to a song rather than treat it like an Agatha Christie mystery he's supposed to solve. :-)

The guitar beat and the drum beat are in different time, but they match up every few bars. It gives the song an amazing conative dissonance. You think they must be out of time, then they hit, then they drag out again. It is kind of like listening to a lava lamp.

People usually associate heaviness with darkness like Black Sabbath, but Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin had the heaviness that most bands didn't have back in the 70s, besides maybe some prog rock artists but they were all over the place.

  • @frankshaffer7645

The song was recorded in 1971. Back then, bands used to cover each others songs a lot. When they wrote Black Dog, they purposely made the rhythm of the hook in a weird time signature so that it was hard for other bands to do it.
It's kinda in 11/4 time, but actually it is a bunch of measures of 3/4 and 2/4 strung together. It is very difficult for us mere guitar players to learn this song. The phrasing always comes out mechanical, but Jimmy Page (guitarist of Led Zeppelin) makes it sound so natural.
    Also...
    Side note:
Us guitar players have been trying for years to find the amp or the FX pedal that sounds like this. Turns out that it is a direct input to the console. No amp. It is the sound of the electric guitar direct overloading the heck out of an old Neve or API console mic preamp.
