- The 2nd war of warcraft is full of important events and characters that are referenced constantly in lore and in game, yet we never see the events unfold in game in any way, shape, or form. So I was glad to get Final Buttress to finally put together a creative re-telling of this lore event in a short 3 hour video using the Tides of Darkness Book as a Reference.

I actually wanted to re-read Tides and Beyond the Dark Portal, so this video is a nice treat, since I lost many of my old WC books

Hi folks - Literally went into hiding for the first 12 hours this video was up but I just want to say Thanks for all the kind words and positivity and stuff. I'm really glad that people seem to have enjoyed this. I will begin building the next series - Beyond the Dark Portal, episodically, over on my channel fairly soon. It's a big book so it's gonna take a while but I'll get it done eventually and then we can do this again. If Hiru's ok with that, obviously!

@@RazanaArcclaw I discovered that like an hour after I left that comment. Shame that they are mostly playlists of 10 minute videos, I prefer 2-3 hour ones instead. But at least they are the right order so it's easy to watch them. His playlists have been my last 5 hours or so tbh

I find it quite fascinating that Teron Gorefiend, shadow council's member and first death knight, was actually loyal to the Horde and did what he could to save Orcs, didn't follow Gul'dan's betrayal, and even died to protect Nerzhul whom he thought was Orcs' last hope. Unusual nobility for such unusual creature
And then Chronicles Volume 2 has to ruin that by explaining that he was interested in his own survival but knew he needed the other clans and that only Ner'zhul could unite them :/
One thing we have to heavily remember is Chronicle is written in the perspective of the Titans.

2:15:05 is the exact moment the Horde lost the second war. Gul'dan fucked it up, just like he fucks up everything else. He couldn't even betray his people for power correctly, and just fucking died like a powerless fool. After the conquest he would have had plenty of time to go exploring, but he just had to ruin everything, like always...
Doomhammer did want to kill Guldan like he did the other warlocks, so I can't help but wonder if Guldan would have survived long after a horde victory.
Why the fuck haven't I looked at the flying buttresses channel until now... I absolutely love this. I knew he helped make the videos on this channel but man... You got a new subscriber!
The artistry, the voice acting, the plot…all…perfect.
This was possibly the greatest bit of content I've ever seen/listened to, the way you put your own spin on this made it extremely entertaining. I really hope this does well because I would love to see a lot more of these

As a Paladin main for almost 15 years I got chills when the founding of the silver hand came up. WoW
He couldve used a child toon as Varian. But no, oh no. He just minimized the menacing Adult Varian and try to pass him as a child. I couldnt stop laughing seeing him silently and yet menacingly following Lothar and Khadgar hahha

The funny part, to me, is that the belt Varian wears in that model apparently used to belong to Anduin Lothar.
I get that people would assume Varian came out like that tho xD

I couldn’t stop laughing the entire time the story of the warlocks reanimating the Stormwind knights was being told. Too funny.
This and the 'Beyond the Dark Portal' videos are arguably two of the most underrated Warcraft lore pieces on UA-cam. I've been binging this one since stumbling on it yesterday and I plan to continue with the follow-up video as well. I'm a huge lore buff for the franchise and this is an excellent way to engage with the history behind modern day WoW. This is an excellent video and extremely well done. I hope Flying Buttress would consider making more like this!

21:47 Zuluhed's dark shamanism being blocked by the anti-deathwing lock placed on the Demon Soul by the other aspects was really cool.
This is such a well done video.
Such huge moments from the lore as well- founding of the Silver Hand/Paladins, creation of the first generation Death Knights and ogre mages, the Horde dragon riders, Gul’Dan’s betrayal and the final battle at Blackrock Mountain. So fucking epic.

The events of the Second War would be incredibly awesome to see in true cinematic spectacle. In particular, the battle at the foot of Blackrock Mountain would be truly amazing to see.
Additionally, there's a lot of moving parts to the Second War to make it feel "genuine." It's pretty impressive Mr. Metzen managed to create so much political intrigue and mix it with realistic war campaign scenarios.
Can't wait for the next villain who never existed at this point be behind all of the second war.

I've been running a Pathfinder 2e game set in the Second War for the past year. We just concluded the final battle and are taking a downtime break before we pick up with Beyond the Dark Portal. Why the second war, you ask? I wanted to tell the story of the Order of the Silver Hand from beginning to end. My paladin player has never played WoW nor any Warcraft games, so it's a great story to introduce him to the franchise
I love the idea that the origin of the entire paladin class was just the pope sitting in church one day wondering how the hell some people with bibles and sticks were suppose to deal with musclebound aliens kicking their teeth in, when suddenly he just stand ups and say, “I’ve got it, dual classing!”

I hardly ever comment on videos, but the work put together here is nothing short of genius. I would prefer my lore always be served with this beautiful and hilarious commentary. I first started listening to this on a drive, didn't even realise the visual edits till I was 40 minutes in. This is amazing. It is just perfect! Please make a lot more of this!
You may be thrown off by the accent at first, but pay attention for a little bit and you will soon be immersed in the story completely. Its such a well made video.

started to listen to this in the evening and before i knew it 3 hours had passed and i was almost done great listen well done
Man i really watched the whole 3 hours and loved it. It really got me thinking why Warcraft Storytelling was so topnotch back then and seems to struggle coming Cataclysm and forth. Is it bc of Metzen stepping down? Or bc too much High Fantasy taking over while they fail to find a middle ground between keeping mysteries vague without reaping deep plotholes.
Metzen is a master world-builder, really one of a kind - he puts so much detail in the politics of the worlds he builds, an often overlooked detail. I know that he had struggled with mental health at certain points during World of Warcraft, especially later on. Maybe they had a lot of pressure from executives and deadlines that took away from the storytelling. An MMORPG is also a little difficult medium to tell a story like WC2 and 3.
I would imagine, though I have no proof, that Metzen and some other senior storytellers had ideas that just weren't feasible in the game and had to make choices that didn't make that much sense. Or they couldn't explain well enough the motivations of major lore characters with the contraints of WoW.
I will say there are still good lore moments in WoW, especially the full Wrathion story from Cataclysm and beyond. It's not perfect, but it is a legitimately captivating story.
you know it doesnt always have to be 'old things are great new ones all suck' many things about the new story yeah its bad but you think EVERY SINGLE PART is bad? There's still many great stories being told, maybe not in shadowlands but in BFA, Jaina's story was pretty cool, Drustvar had an amazing story. In Legion the whole storyline was universally praised.

Holy cow, despite the comedic angle of telling this story I found myself totally invested, even tearing up when Turalyon found his Faith in his fight against Orgrim.
Honestly, folk that made this, Absolutely amazing job doing this. I kept listening to this at home, at work, and every time I had free time. Thank you so much for the visuals and the voice acting/reading. This was such an enjoyable time and I cannot wait to see more ^-^

This is incredible. As someone who grew up with Warcraft I & II it's fun to see it put into perspective with the modern story (using the current models etc) Sort of bridging the gap of the old games and WoW. Also the Warcraft Adventures backgrounds were a marvelous touch!

Imagine blizzard putting even half as much effort into narrating their stories which are meant to be core parts of the gameplay. The idea that people are meant to just get it all from books is maddening. I never would have known this story to the same degree without your narration. Thank you
They did narrate it for the game, could probably find all the wc2 mission intros combined somewhere and watch that. Not novel levels of detail but same story.
You can never have this huge massive and highly detailed story in a single expansion though. Everything is already shortened in this video. If they do, It'll probably not be a an MMO anymore, but a single story rich RPG or a visual novel game with a lot of talking.
I don’t even play wow anymore or have any real interest in it, but when I see a 3 1/2 hour lore video from you I can’t help but watch.
This is so awesome. I started playing Warcraft back in ~’04, playing the WC3 at a friend’s house over the summer. Got into WoW in ~’07, late TBC if I recall. I’ve read about bits of Warcraft history, but learned so much here - never new Kel’Thuzad had been a member of the Kirin Tor, for example.

I've played wow since bc but never really payed attention to the lore so only know bits to date so it's cool to get perspective and understanding. This channel will get many plays from me. Very much enjoy it, and your narration and humor is great.
Haven't watched yet but I'm so excited for a 3 hour video on warcraft 2 lore. The novels are absolutely critical for warcraft lore and I have always said they need to base the next movie/tv series on these novels and not the games themselves
