  • This week's reintroduction of The Acolyte's antonymic two-word title convention makes sense, as the episode divides the twin sisters Mae and Osha once more and puts them in diametrically opposed circumstances. In "Teach/Corrupt," Mae poses as Osha and tries to approach Sol aboard his spacecraft, while her sister is stranded on a desolate island on an unidentified planet with Qimir. I don't think it's an open question, even though I could rub my chin, look attentively at the ceiling, and inquire as to who is truly being corrupted and who is truly being taught.
Qimir is doing his hardest to influence Osha. And, damn him, he's doing a pretty good job at it.
This week's "Night" plays much calmer and quieter than last week's, effectively setting the atmosphere before the final two episodes of the season. This is in contrast to last week's exciting action-packed episode. I saw "Night" three times, and I really liked the longer lightsaber duel. However, I believe "Teach/Corrupt" to be marginally superior overall, if only because we get to learn more about the two major characters than their respective hosts do for the first time on this show. We've had enough time to get to know Osha well enough to be able to analyze the pitches Qimir is making with her. While Mae remains a mystery, at least we can decipher the nuanced meanings underneath everything she says to Sol.
There is a hint of tension in the encounters between Sol and Mae from the beginning, as it appears he may know which sister he actually saved from Khofar. When will they both give up on their individual charades if he does? That is the key question.
Initially, Sol lets Mae take command of the ship and communicates openly with her about his intention to tell the Jedi High Council everything, demonstrating to her that he trusts her-or at least, that he trusts Osha. Mae starts asking questions about what "everything" means right away, so this last admission could just be bait.
Unable to contain her contempt for the Jedi, Mae remarks insensitive things in passing when she is with Sol. Putting herself in Osha's position, she subsequently claims that the Jedi force Padawans to lose a great deal of themselves throughout training. She first implies that he makes mistakes because he is occasionally blinded by what he wants to be true. Sol finally has enough and stuns Mae with a blaster, not knowing if he's been talking to her all along or figuring it out because she won't just stop teasing him about the Jedi. There is only so much defamation a Jedi Knight can take.
Qimir is using his own take on the classic "let me earn your trust by trusting you first" gambit elsewhere in the galaxy. He gives Osha complete freedom, including allowing her to board his ship and sail away at any time-that is, provided she's ready to swim over harsh seas. Maybe they could spend some time getting to know one another if she would like to wait for things to improve.
