depends. it's personal preference though. third party emulators have more options and only can take up 1 slot on the home menu, while each virtual console inject will take 1. it's good for people who have only a few games they want to inject, just not for people who have the entire console library at once. although i do like the crt w/console banner for each inject

You forgot that for the emulation part for most of the consoles listed you could just use the new super ultimate virtual console injector, which turns roms from various consoles (even the wanderswan and neo geo pocket, and psx for some reason) into cias to install directly into your 3ds homescreen, and they function practically just like actual virtual console games, now i have mother 3 on my 3ds and it works flawlessly because it's using the 3ds's built in emulator. Wanderswan ran surprisingly well, neo geo pocket had audio issues but otherwise ran smoothly, and psx was very shaky, but hell, it worked. Also, my brother in christ, the ammount of mods out there for the 3ds fire emblem games is astonishing, how did you not see em, there's ones that just straight up are their own games. And finally there is an english translation for the 3ds japanese only port of final fantasy, which is pretty neat.
My favourite homebrew emulator is MGBA. Yes you can install the games as virtual console injections. But the MGBA has some nice QoL things, such as a cheat menu, display options, button remapping, works with sleep mode, fps counter and more.
Yeah, I use it instead of virtual console too. For some reason on my 3ds the injected virtual console gba games have a weird visual glitch where the bottom of the screen is at the top
1:35 I'm pretty sure that's because nintendo ninja will try to take down that stuff as soon as it releases but if a console is dead or something they don't care about anymore they likely will not care cause it doesn't catch their attention
PS1 emu on New 3DS runs quite well. Quake 1 runs with 3d effect. Also there a 60 fps cheats for 3ds games. For example, Yo-Kai watch games working full 60 fps on new 3ds with 3d turned off.
You can also inject PSX games onto your 3ds I've the n3ds xl and not _all_ games run fast or at all on it, but I'm still content with it. I was able to (almost) finish Final Fantasy Tactics (before I got tired of grinding) and it ran almost perfectly save for the sound stuttering sometimes. There was also an issue where the game would crash and I'd lose my save data for no reason but I got into the habit of saving the state after I saved my actual game so it's fine
Thanks to Xash3D, the first Half-Life and its expansions can be played on 3DS, and you can also play mods for it just like the PC version. Online multiplayer kinda works. You can connect to some online servers, but it doesn't play nice with custom assets. There are also some minor mods for the handheld Kingdom Hearts games
Thanks for a wonderful video! I'd like to add my $0.02 to the mix :) 3DS homebrew also includes some really amazing emulators for old 8-bit computers. Some of the best ones include ZXDS for ZX Spectrum emulation (which is T-state accurate), Vice3DS which is a really faithful and awesome port of Vice that emulates Commodore 64. There's also uae3ds which emulates Amiga 500, and while it's not completely finished and not fully compatible with all the titles, it can run quite a good number of A500 games at full speed and with good graphics and sound/music. On the emulation side, RetroArch isn't actually as bad as they say it is for certain scenarios, at least on New 2DS/3DS. In particular, Genesis emulation via Genesis Plus GX works very well (and runs full speed at least for most games), my experience with it was better than Picodrive for certain games. PS1 emulation via PCSX Rearmed is really amazing (and surprising!) once you tweak the settings (there's a guide on gbatemp, you can get many 3D games including the likes of Tekken 3 to run at full or near-full speed most of the time with no sound stuttering; it takes some time to configure things and ideally you need to convert the images to .chd format, but once you do it, it runs surprisingly well, and tbh it doesn't even take that much time to do it). TwilightMenu is a really decent homebrew app that runs DS games natively on a 3DS. It can also run DS homebrew natively, at least the majority of it - e.g. I was able to play the VanillaConquer C&C port for DS on my New 2DS through it.
There are mods for every single one of the Gen 6 and 7 Pokemon games, and they can make those games FAR more difficult than they are by default. Pokemon Rutile Ruby and Star Sapphire come to mind. That's Pokemon for you though, having a fan base so dedicated to the game and its mechanics that there are mods or romhacks of all 9 Generations and even some of the spin-off titles like the 2 Gamecube games, Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness.
I think another one that should be mentioned is the Ocarina of Time Randomizer App that you can use to.... Randomize the entire game as many times as you want. You just make sure to enable Patching in Luma and it works flawlessly
An emulator you missed, and the reason I bought a 3DS (a 'New' 3DS XL) is Vice3DS, a port of the popular Commodore 64 emulator. It works very well on the 'new' 3DS and 3DS XL. I understand that it can be slow on the original 3DS models, although I haven't personally tried it on one. The dual-screen device makes for a nice handheld C64 as the top screen shows the normal screen output and the touchscreen has a virtual keyboard always available, plus some shortcuts for emulator functions. There is even an emulator for the Vectrex! Not tried it yet, and I have never even seen a Vectrex in the flesh, so can't comment on how well it works.
Really cool to see you comment! I’ve been meaning to give animal crossing a whirl for a long time and it’s probably time I bit the bullet. Thanks for commenting and, well, literally *making* the mod! What you do is wizardry to me and it’s awesome.
Yes, I am aware that I misspelled “certain”, I’ll re-upload with a fixed version if this post doesn’t perform well lol. And I know I mispronounced anemone%!$!!!@!@@!!@@!
There’s a boat load of mods for rhythm heaven megamix that either add things such as joke levels, or entire recreations of levels from previous entries in the series to even wholly original games made by fans.
The best way to do just about any emulation for 3ds has to be the Virtual Console. Runs like *butter* if you're running something like a randomized rom of a game and it'd be a pain to delete from virtual console, there is the option to use open_agb. It's run by holding Select while powering the system up, similarly to gm9, and uses the Virtual DS mode to run the games. I swear, open_agb is better than some emulators some times.
so i have harvest moon 1-3 from the shop and theyre virtual console. makes me wonder if i can get it from the shop why would i get like a gameboy emulator for example..
On the New Nintendo 3DS (non-XL), you can just leave the screws undone. They still stay flush with the case, and it holds itself on just fine without them.
Ps1 games via retroarch are quite playable, i have recently installed it to play Ape Escape, which is a nostalgic game to me. Plays pretty well after some tinkering with the settings. Quite impressed with that, but it requires the new 3ds. Will have to try more nostalgic games.
Great video for anyone looking into getting the most out of their console. My circle pad also disintegrated suddenly, lol. It somewhat works, but I should replace it somehow. Is there any app/mod that allows you to easily streetpass a VIP mii or something? Or to get extra play coins? I'm slightly annoyed that I can't complete my 3D puzzles. Also, I can understand why you didn't mention it in the video but hshop is pretty nice. You can download games directly to the 3DS, although the download speed is very slow.
I know this is a slightly old comment, but Checkpoint has a built-in play coin feature, just hold select for the options and there's a little play coin symbol on the top right of the touch screen. Tap that and you can input a number to just have that many play coins.
@@Lucas-Amaterasu Hmm, that sounds pretty nice, although the convenience of an app that can quickly just give you the max amount is very nice, especially if you are playing streetpass games.
Cool video, Mate, thank you for the info, I learned some new things after years of homebrewing my new 3DS, for sure gonna play mania on 3DS, I always joked that Mania could be playable on the Saturn, or probably Dreamcast, that would be really interesting to find out if anyone attempts a port to either one.
If there's one specific reason you see a ton of homebrew once Nintendo finishes supporting a console, it's because homebrew devs can work in (relative) peace without exploits being patched in constant firmware updates. Nintendo actually did release one post-eShop closure update for 3DS to try and kill homebrew, but devs found a way around it in under 24 hours. lol
We've also got an OOT3DS Randomizer as well that runs on original hardware. There's been some work on a MM3DS Randomizer, but I'm honestly not sure what's up with it
I'm terrified of starting to mod my old 3DS XL because I only really want Pokémon Bank and Transporter, the rest would be nice benefits. I don't want to brick it and I'm worried about the authenticity of stuff like hshop
10:40 nintendo doesnt provide unity 3DS anymore for the last year or so. (only for people that released unity game in the past so they can make updates) but it can be downloaded on web archive
2:55 Doing that could actually damage your console That method makes it so instead of using the dsi "inside" your 3ds to run those games, it uses the same processor as the 3DS itself, which means is basically emulating it without being powerful enough to actually endure it for long No much will happen for a while, that stuff damages it until some months of constantly playing like that
I was an insane person who really claimed I didn't want a 3DS. Then, i got one for my birthday anyway. I hope to never forget my 3DS Streetpass Journey. It was an experience.
A third way to get your own games on 3DS is to create a game for an older system and then emulate them. NESmaker is a Windows problem for easy creation of NES games and GB Studio is likewise for Game Boy and GBC.
7:04 Y’know I was just ask something about this as a fellow 3Ds user…is it only used for New 3Ds? Or regular 3Ds even tho the features of the analog sm64 DS is completely different between the C stick and its ZL and ZR button?
You say that retroarch is bad, and it is, but it's currently the ONLY way to play most of the PS1 library at full speed on a New 3DS! It's... insanely impressive, actually, and I'm very sad that I'm forced to put up with Retroarch just to use it. Still definitely worth mentioning, though.
I'm pretty sure there exist tools that allow you to make something with LOVE2d and then get it running on a 3ds, I might actually look more into it myself
Not really a stupid question, it's fair tbh. Nintendo's official FTP service is only verified to work with windows 7 and windows 8.1 whilst Super FTP should work with any OS. Also, Old 3ds models don't have Nintendo's official FTP service.
You actually don't need twilight launcher to use the nds forwarder. Just get it from homebrew, load your nds roms into a rom folder and bam you're good to go
In the time it took for me to make this video, Third Tube got old 3ds support, the Mario 64 port ran like a slide show initially when I tried it on my old 3ds but I've been made aware they optimized it or smth and now it runs decently, the above-stated compatibility information in this video are out of date and I've updated the description accordingly as stuff pops up. (I never claimed that only new models work with the NSMB2 Mods and Mario Expedition so those remain correct) Also, PS1 Emulation is apparently a stable thing now on 3ds? Still not too educated on that, I feel old. The homebrew scene moves too fast and I move too slow, sorry for the inconvenience.

I just go out my new 3ds xl and it only has a few games I cared to play. got it for samus returnes and I'm playing luigis mansion dark moon before playing 3
We really need an actually functioning virtual boy emulator, sure the virtual boy was trash, but the 3ds should've been the definitive way to play these games. To bad the current emulator might as well not exist
Out of curiosity what is the advantage to the FTP file transfer over the 3ds' built in method of remote access to the sd card? I've had a hacked new 3ds and I only had to unscrew for the initial setup since that can't be done over the built in file transfer. Otherwise I always use it to add files.
What do you mean by “old” 3ds models? I have a 3ds XL, is that considered “old” because they’re not the “new” 3ds’s? Or do you literally mean older models. 3ds names are so confusing
I still want a real life battle mode that detects when another player is near you and challenges them to fight 4 player bomberman on DS is probably the best party game ever or at least arguably the loudest

great vid!!! for making 3ds games, theres also a version of rpgmaker available on the 3ds i was able to pick up!! it requires a separate player app i believe (havent gotten around to using it yet), but its still available and another good idea for anyone else wanting to make their own ds games!! ill have to get some of the stuff you listed in this video, i was literally talking about putting doom on my 3ds earlier
hello soup do you know anything about modding existing 3ds games? or how to make homebrew like the above?
@@cricksol i know very little, but i know how to edit the town layout in acnl and other small mods like that !! what game were you trying to mod ? i might still be able to help ^^
@@getsouped thanks so much for your response! im trying to mod tomodachii life. i got about as far as getting the machine code for the encrypted cxi but I couldn’t figure out how to decode it/ compile it :(
@@cricksol what mod are u trying to install ? and im assuming ur modding from a digital copy of the game right ? it might take me a little time but i can try to figure it out for u and give u a step-by-step !! :D
Addition to the game mods: There is a OoT3D randomizer that you can generates runs right on the system.
Wait There Is? How Do You Do It?
Muchas gracias por el video mi querido hombre super asombroso :D
Hopefully homebrew will help the 3ds live longer and with pretendo the online will live on
thank you for including my mod in your video
Really cool to see you comment, thank you!
I tried running games with it and got HORRIBLE fps and visual glitches. Am I doing something wrong?
1:35 I'm pretty sure that's because nintendo ninja will try to take down that stuff as soon as it releases but if a console is dead or something they don't care about anymore they likely will not care cause it doesn't catch their attention
PS1 emu on New 3DS runs quite well.
Quake 1 runs with 3d effect.
Also there a 60 fps cheats for 3ds games. For example, Yo-Kai watch games working full 60 fps on new 3ds with 3d turned off.
Underrated video. Great work!
Thanks!
You can also inject PSX games onto your 3ds
I've the n3ds xl and not _all_ games run fast or at all on it, but I'm still content with it.
You just make sure to enable Patching in Luma and it works flawlessly
you earned a subscriber, amazing content
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Not tried it yet, and I have never even seen a Vectrex in the flesh, so can't comment on how well it works.
playing super mario 64 at 60fps and using the entire 800x240p of resolution is awesome
I missed the super mario 3D land mod completely. Thank you!
i was looking for a vid like this
I'm mentioned in this video and I like it! :D
Man you should give Animal Crossing a try! :)
Really cool to see you comment! I’ve been meaning to give animal crossing a whirl for a long time and it’s probably time I bit the bullet. Thanks for commenting and, well, literally *making* the mod! What you do is wizardry to me and it’s awesome.
at 1:02 you used a greater than sign opposed to a lesser than sign like you wanted to use
I have an old 3ds so I couldn't use the newest version of thirdtube, but was able to use release v0.5.0

Yes, I am aware that I misspelled “certain”, I’ll re-upload with a fixed version if this post doesn’t perform well lol. And I know I mispronounced anemone%!$!!!@!@@!!@@!
if you just homebrewed your DS for the first time watch this video it helped me so much lmao
Thanks for the kind words, glad it helped you!
THIS VIDEO IS TOO GOOOOOD
THANK YOU!!!
I wish I knew about the circle pad hack earlier. I just got through playing Mario 64 DS recently. Almost rage quit more than once.
There’s a boat load of mods for rhythm heaven megamix that either add things such as joke levels, or entire recreations of levels from previous entries in the series to even wholly original games made by fans.
The best way to do just about any emulation for 3ds has to be the Virtual Console. Runs like *butter*
if you're running something like a randomized rom of a game and it'd be a pain to delete from virtual console, there is the option to use open_agb.
Will have to try more nostalgic games.
yeah id say only get retroarche for ps1 on 3ds but even then its only a few games can run
6:24 you can also emulate PS1 games but it has to be with retroarch as far as I'm aware.
It's painful how historical this video feels.
You can download games directly to the 3DS, although the download speed is very slow.
www.gamebrew.org/wiki/Gimme_300_coins_3DS.
Can't believe I forgot this, this is the app I use to cheese more play coins.
@@SuperAwesomeGuy Thanks a ton, mate! That will definitely come in handy.
Nintendo actually did release one post-eShop closure update for 3DS to try and kill homebrew, but devs found a way around it in under 24 hours. lol
Just saying: Retroarch's ps1 emulator can run games like Spyro 1 and 2 VERY Well considering, like it's actually playable at roughly 15 fps
The half-life port runs pretty well on the New 3DS
10:40 nintendo doesnt provide unity 3DS anymore for the last year or so. (only for people that released unity game in the past so they can make updates)
but it can be downloaded on web archive
2:55 Doing that could actually damage your console
That method makes it so instead of using the dsi "inside" your 3ds to run those games, it uses the same processor as the 3DS itself, which means is basically emulating it without being powerful enough to actually endure it for long
No much will happen for a while, that stuff damages it until some months of constantly playing like that
Does it? I thought it's just using a title slot to launch TW Menu. Does NDS-Bootstrapper carry the same risk?
source?
There's a mod for Majora's Mask that fixes certain gameplay elements and restores changes to something more faithful to the N64 version.
Great vid!!
Thanks!
I was an insane person who really claimed I didn't want a 3DS. Then, i got one for my birthday anyway. I hope to never forget my 3DS Streetpass Journey. It was an experience.
SNES runs perfect on New 3DS/2DS.
GBA is completely native on any 3DS, too (actually any handheld from Nintendo since the GBA except for the Switch)
You seem like a super awesome guy
A third way to get your own games on 3DS is to create a game for an older system and then emulate them. NESmaker is a Windows problem for easy creation of NES games and GB Studio is likewise for Game Boy and GBC.
You missed another port:
Diablo 1 has a port as well through the DevilutionX engine
7:04
Y’know I was just ask something about this as a fellow 3Ds user…is it only used for New 3Ds? Or regular 3Ds even tho the features of the analog sm64 DS is completely different between the C stick and its ZL and ZR button?
i ordered a japanese 3ds the other day and it came in when this was uploaded lmfao thats wild
Adding to that, this video was posted on the Japanese 3ds release date.
You say that retroarch is bad, and it is, but it's currently the ONLY way to play most of the PS1 library at full speed on a New 3DS!
It's... insanely impressive, actually, and I'm very sad that I'm forced to put up with Retroarch just to use it. Still definitely worth mentioning, though.
channel name 100% legit ❤
Please tell me there's something amazing for Monster Hunter in Homebrew
And Minecraft
I hope it's possible to port at least most of the classic MH games on 3DS
I'm pretty sure there exist tools that allow you to make something with LOVE2d and then get it running on a 3ds, I might actually look more into it myself
Actually retroArch with PSX core works very well on "new" models, pretty every game with some exceptions.
2:25
"Machine, did you know it's surprisingly easy to hack your 3DS?
Minos prime cried, "Oh gabriel, you will brick your 3DS", but I did so anyway".
I have a stupid question. Why is ftp homebrew even a thing when you can do the same thing out of the box directly within console settings?
for old 3ds
Not really a stupid question, it's fair tbh. Nintendo's official FTP service is only verified to work with windows 7 and windows 8.1 whilst Super FTP should work with any OS. Also, Old 3ds models don't have Nintendo's official FTP service.
@@SuperAwesomeGuy you are able to use it you just have to enable a legacy thingy, tpm 1.0 or something
@@restingcomet tpm 1.0 is considered outdated and unsafe. Microsoft has it disabled by default for a reason.
You actually don't need twilight launcher to use the nds forwarder. Just get it from homebrew, load your nds roms into a rom folder and bam you're good to go
*wondering how i have multiple of the listed mods on my O3DS when they aren't supported*
The homebrew scene moves too fast and I move too slow, sorry for the inconvenience.
from my experience retroarch and other emulators running perfectly on my old 2ds no tweaking just working straight away
5:49 Daedalusx64 is actually Available on the old 3ds consoles right now
homebrew before a console dies: ok just add the homebrew launcher
homebrew when a console dies: *puts like 10000000000000000000000000 homebrew related stuff*
I just go out my new 3ds xl and it only has a few games I cared to play. got it for samus returnes and I'm playing luigis mansion dark moon before playing 3
The original Luigi's mansion is also available on 3ds so I recommend checking it out as well if you haven’t already.
Where did Snickerstream with NTR CFW or HzMod for wireless streaming to PC goes??? It should be in the list!
That 1st frame of doom running on potatoes... 💀💀💀
We really need an actually functioning virtual boy emulator, sure the virtual boy was trash, but the 3ds should've been the definitive way to play these games. To bad the current emulator might as well not exist
Red viper
Out of curiosity what is the advantage to the FTP file transfer over the 3ds' built in method of remote access to the sd card? I've had a hacked new 3ds and I only had to unscrew for the initial setup since that can't be done over the built in file transfer. Otherwise I always use it to add files.
The built in method is only verified by Nintendo to work with windows 7 or windows 8.1. Whereas Super FTP allows for pretty much any OS.
@@SuperAwesomeGuy oh ok, I never had issues on windows 10 but I guess that’s good potential future proofing
What do you mean by “old” 3ds models? I have a 3ds XL, is that considered “old” because they’re not the “new” 3ds’s? Or do you literally mean older models. 3ds names are so confusing
I really hope that streetpass could get some custom games.
🤨
I still want a real life battle mode that detects when another player is near you and challenges them to fight
4 player bomberman on DS is probably the best party game ever or at least arguably the loudest
3:20 did anybody out there make a 3rd party CHANGE to that?
