    The 3DS was Nintendo's last true portable device and is still my favorite. One the best 3DS mods out there is the Project Restoration mod for Majora's Mask 3D which undoes all the unnecessary changes made to the game with additional QOL changes. Also there's a mod that adds C-stick support to Ocarina of Time 3D which never got Circle Pad Pro support. Now you can freely move the camera around like in Majora's Mask 3D.

    • @latt.qcd9221
      @latt.qcd9221 8 місяців тому +9

      This was always one of the biggest selling points of homebrew, for me. It's especially nice for games where you only have two or three save files, but you make some game-changing choices at certain points in the game that are nice to be able to backup while playing on original hardware.

    • @Mik3l24
      @Mik3l24 8 місяців тому +6

      Checkpoint can also be used to have effectively multiple save slots in Pokemon games!

    • @lordeilluminati
      @lordeilluminati 8 місяців тому

      I think JKSV is far better than Checkpoint. JKSV is more simple and intuitive, I hate how everything on checkpoint is done by button combos that are not explained well. I was infuriated how some games didnt appear because the game list is refreshed by a button combination, on JKSV you just click "Reload game list" as it should. For Pokemon games there is also PKSV which acts like a local Pokemon Bank

    • @lordeilluminati
      @lordeilluminati 8 місяців тому +3

      I rather JKSV than Checkpoint. I hate how Checkpoint has an awful UI that relies too much on button combos for important features that the user needs to remember. JKSV is far easier and straightforward to use, just refresh your game list, choose it to create a new backup or to restore a save from that game and done. For Pokemon games there is PKSV also.

    As someone who can speak Japanese (now), my 3DS lately has been one the best emulation machines out there. I'm still thinking of buying a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro but honestly, playing games like Mizzurna Falls, Yuuyami Doori Tankentai (one of my goals) and as of this week, Boku no Natsuyasumi, my N3DS running these games as a CIA has been such a great experience. Even more recently with the new Virtual Boy emulator that os now running natively on the 3DS is insanely good! I recently conpleted Wario Land on it and its by far the best game on VB and one of the best Wario Land games. Using the actual 3DS 3D slider and being able to change the colours from Red to anything else is such a huge inprovement.
    PS1 on the 3DS and now playing these region/language locked games has made the 3DS one of the best and cheapest handheld emulators out there.
    Funny side story, while I was in Japan Nov 2023, I ended up street passing with a Nintendo employee, but it said my most recent game was PS1 Virtual Console lol. So now there's a Nintendo employee with someone who had a PS1 emulator on their 3DS now appear in their Mii Plaza.

      We need to think in terms of development costs vs financial gain ratios.
      The devs who ported those games to the 3DS did so on their free time, but if Nintendo were to do it themselves they'd have to spend money on devs who'd need to be paid for this, as small as this kind of project may seem.
      I don't think many people would be interested in those games like they'd be in NES/SNES/Game Boy stuff. But it is pretty sad to see that those games will essentially become unknown to the majority of people due to the fact they're tied to a system that failed.

    • @savagej4y241

      Yeah, but probably the only one that would've been worth working on was VB Wario Land. That would've taken way more effort than just porting the existing Wario Land titles, and didn't think there were enough of us from the 90's who really wanted to play the game but just couldn't stand the Virtual Boy form factor. That thing made me feel like I needed a neck brace after 15 minutes trying it at a demo kiosk in '95 lol

    The number one reason is """piracy""", and I'm not saying this in a bad way. With Nintendo closing their eShop (even though they could have still kept games purchasable via the website, if maintaining the 3DS app up to current security standards was too much of a hassle), modding the 3DS and """"""pirating"""""" games is pretty much the only way to play the 3DS library. Sure you can buy physical games, but the developer/publisher won't see a single cent out of a second-hand purchase, so there's really no moral reason to do so other than personal interest in collecting physical games.

    I've got a couple CFW N3DSXLs that I use for recording, but I'd like to thank you for showing all these great uses! That said, a key one I think you missed would be Checkpoint. The ability to back up saves of physical and digital NDS and 3DS titles directly to your SD card is extremely valuable. Not only is your save protected from any sort of hardware issue, you can transfer that save to another cartridge, console or even to an emulator on PC.

    Hey Jon! Just watched your video on modding the 3DS, and I have to say, you really hit on everything I love about modding mine. The level of detail you went into is something I truly appreciate-especially after the journey I've been through with my 3DS.
    My 3DS has been through the wringer-starting with a minor scratch on the glass cover that led to a series of unfortunate repairs. I ended up sourcing all the repair parts myself and, after 3 years of frustration and countless setbacks, it's finally in a playable state again. It's been a draining experience, but I'm thrilled to be able to enjoy my games once more.
    The last repair was done by someone who was miles above any of the previous attempts, and I'm super grateful for his work. However, there's still one lingering issue-the 3D effect. The 3D component seems slightly misaligned, leading to some ghosting. I've tried using the calibration tool in the OG 3DS firmware, but no setting seems to bring back that perfect 3D effect.
    I was wondering, since you mentioned so many different homebrew apps in your video, do you know if there's one that can help with further calibrating the 3D effect beyond what the stock calibrator offers? The repairman is in another province, and I really don't want to go through the hassle of shipping the 3DS again for something that seems like it should be a simple fix.
    Thanks again for all the awesome content you put out-I vibe so well with everything you do on the channel. Keep up the great work!

    I'm gonna guess and say that the frame drops in a Link Between worlds is due to the game loading things in view on the fly while IN the game world, as opposed to the fast travels fade to black allowing the system to free up bandwith by not needing to render anything, thus not stressing the 3DS as much
    So the slowdown probably isn't an artistic choice so much as it is a "good enough" sorta situation

    BootNTR + Snickerstream works only on New 3DS and 2DS LL because of their better hardware. Only runs one screen (your choice) at 30fps and the other at far less.
    NEWER better way though to wirelessly stream that works on ALL 3DS models is to use Artic Base + Citra. Currently only works with 3DS games, but streams at an almost constant 60fps. Has upscaler options that can look quite nice if you want to use them. Seems to be compatible with 95% or so of 3DS games. Is still in development to get more things working (hopefully DS and DSi games in the future). Since everything runs natively on the 3DS, you do not need to dump games and all saves stay on the 3DS. Meaning once you disconnect the stream (turn off Artic Base) and you then just start the game on your 3DS, you can continue where you left off, since the game is on the 3DS as well as the Saves no matter if you're playing it on the handheld or the PC. Of course, Citra supports controllers, allowing for easy play on the PC as well and you can slap your overlays or OBS on it for making it look nice and streaming.

      @@EuroMIX2 It was always wild to me that 3DS released without it. It single handedly saves 3D on 3ds. Like on one hand I get it, the success of the 3DS let us have the New 3DS, but I always had the feeling that we never got to experience 3D focused games on the 3DS because of that ironically. Most games use the 3D aesthetically rather than making it core to gameplay, and the awful flickering and one angle nature of the original 3ds 3D is likely responsible for that.
      Tbh I wish we got a New 3DS with NO SLIDER always on 3D on release so developers would've be forced to actually engage with it to do cool things. And if a game didn't have 3D, it could've just boot into 2D instead.
