Agree great little cam! But external it is 12bit 422 up to 5.9K with 14+ stops. No other camera in this price range matches this. We bought one as a B-cam. But end up doing whole productions with it. Even AF is usable if you put the settings right. Here a TV commercial filmed with the S5 with AF. Not a shot missed, and pro image quality. Here it is, please note YT compression degrades the image a lot: ua-cam.com/video/qax2G8TKn9g/v-deo.html
Thank you, after couple cinema cameras i was looking for something light. I dont want to rig anymore. Just have fun and do run&gun. This camera is perfect for this price.
The S5 is an insanely good camera man, amazing what you can get with US$1,500(ive seen body only go for even less new). Great video man, glad i played a part in convincing you to get one, thanks so much for the mention! I have learned a lot from you bro. These videos are great Colin, keep em coming man seriously.
I just picked up an s5 that will be my C camera for my two FPs. glad to hear others dig it. I will say that you mentioned that the FP has huge files, but that is easily solved with an external recorder. I just filmed an entire BTS project on a single SD card. I think a lot of people only look at the camera for the size, but forget that It was intended to scale, not just be small. Love the panasonic cameras, and Im glad you got one that fits your needs!
Hey Anson, awesome we're in it together now 😁 Yeah external is a good option. I bought the ninja & a video assist for the S5 so that could have been done with the fp also. Anyway...I'm definitely loving the S5 but it was the FP that got me here.
@@AltCine both are phenomenal cameras for sure. I can see your point with rigging. Honestly it’s why I bought a second FP. Have one for my big cine lenses and then one for more on the go stuff. Sometimes it’s just a pain to rig. Anyways, cheers! Hope to see more s5 content soon
I picked up a lightly used Lumix S1 about a year ago for $1500. Love it. Even better IBIS than the S5 and heavier for better handheld shooting. Started using it for photos as well and it does well with the newer Sigma lenses. Looking forward to the newer Lumix cameras coming out. Definitely prefer the footage out of it than my friends Sony A7SIII.
Really to cool to see some Lumix S5 love! Back then I didn't know anything about cameras and also didn't know what I wanted in a camera, so I chose what probably most people chose in my position and went with Sony's a6600. Not complaining about Sony, but if I had a chance to go back in time I would have gotten the Lumix S5, since it's sooooo overpowered for the price!
Hey bro, thanks for your comment. Yes I think you're right in that we tend to follow the most popular items. We can agree that Sony is great but just so expensive man 😅 I like to make the money back quickly but low price often means big compromises. I'm glad great featured cameras are getting cheap because it really lowers the initial investment but you can still do great work without too much fuss.
I went the other way lol. Got rid of my pocket 4k a while ago and now have the FP. I love that its also a good still camera as well as a killer video camera. Its also so small so I can just take it anywhere for both stills and video. If I need something with auto focus I use the A7s3, but most the time I use the sigma.
The pocket 4k is much better than the FP. That mostly comes down to the smaller sensor on p4k. If jump up to p6k it's worse but I think still better than fp
For the S5, what is the limit of single long take runtime? I need to record events with at least one camcorder that can last the whole event(say 2 to 3 hours) in 1 take without stopping. Thx in advance. BTW, I love that you are such a maker and repurpose expired parts.
Hi, in 10bit 422 it's 30 mins but I believe it's unlimited in 8bit. That sucks but I guess it's better than nothing 😅 And thank you. I know you could always rent stuff to keep the costs down but I prefer to own affordable gear.
Thank you Kevin, much appreciated 🙌🏾. Here is the eBay link for the adapter but it's much cheaper on AliExpress. I bought it locally just in case I had any issues and needed to send it back but so far it's been great. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353963762072?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=dpPJ9evFSOS&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=6dpr8FPCQRi&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
You're absolutely right about most cameras nowadays are all good. It then comes down to taking time to understand the ecosystem and the specificities of the one you pick. I like the s5 because it's a pretty good swiss army knife. You realize with that camera price tag plus the ninja V, you are easily still under $2K, for an outcome that competes with cameras whose price tag is often a thousand or two more, for the body only ... If you're a serious businessman and skilled videographer, the S5 is a no brainer, even as a second or third camera.
Yep that's right and the S5 punched so high it's crazy. I was saying on a shoot yesterday that the S5 & Video assist might seem expensive but when you realise what they actually offer as a pair it then become very cheap
Yeap i thought it was gh5 hahaha but then I saw s5..I was like wait what..cameras are not mobile phones..their life cycle is easily 4-5years not six months 🤯
Nice! I have the EOS M, Sigma FP, and Panasonic S5. All have their uses. Love the EOS-m because it's cheap and I can take it hiking and stuff and not worry about it. Love the Sigma FP for how small it is. Then there is the S5 with NINJA V, which is a beast, with IBIS, but a pretty large set up. I don't always want to carry around such a large rig. Probably grab the Sigma FP the most, followed by the EOS-M.
That's a nice collection you have there and I can see why you'd grab one of the smaller cams. I find the S5 internal codec very good though so raw isn't always needed.
So I shoot 12-bit 4K 30p cinemaDNG (which is true raw) and yes the file sizes are huge. You can record braw if you have a balckmagic assist. But I love this camera for my purposes.
Bro...I'm definitely not knocking it, anyone that says this camera isn't amazing is crazy!!! It definitely works for lots of people, I only made this video for people who may be in my position.
@@AltCine Oh I didn't mean to imply that you were. It's definitely a niche camera. I just wanted to chime in. Now, imagine if Sigma released braw to SSD in an upcoming release. 😎 Also, you're spot on about a 2TB SSD. The T5 2TB is the drive to use with it. Great video!!
It's such an awesome camera isn't it! Yeah the margin guides are great too. I still can't believe how versatile it is and the image is gorgeous. Thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.
Sigma has shown that if you want absolutely the best image quality whether in stills(their Foveon gear) or in video (massive bitrate Cinema DNG) and don't mind every other shortcoming/caveats and want it all at an affordable price compared to similar image and raw video from others, then these are the cameras for you. I will always respect and amdire Sigma for being one of very few companies still innovating and not afraid to go against the grain.
Well said mate. I truly do admire what they did here. Whilst other companies just give us the same thing year after year, this underdog came out with something great. It's just a shame they sent it to the wrong people to review.
@@AltCine thanks man. 🙏🏽😊 Yep, actually they told a wonderful channel recently that loves their sdQuattro H that even though the fpL is not usually her type of camera, they don't mind her giving her honest opinions and I think they did the same with Gerald too. A lot to be said about such ethics and humility from a corporate organization. And to learn from as well.😊
If storage is a problem for the sigma couldnt you use the atomos and record braw or prores raw? I am not that familiar with the formats that the atomos can record
Hi, yes you can but then you're at the mercy of an external recorder with still no good size codec for regular 4k. Just thinking about long term use ie you did a quick job and need to hand footage over in say 10bit or ProRes....the FP is not really good for that. It's either go hard or go home 😅
I have the same a bmpcc4k, would love a 6k bit maybe when prices lowe. But I wanted to get something that had ibis and could take pictures and got an S5. I still need to get to using it. I had the gh5 but didn’t like the image or the low light lack of capability. It’s hard to match the bmpcc image but I’m glad I found your channel. I’m gonna see how much I like the s5. Nothing is like the black magic menu it’s so simple and intuitive
Hey. Yep...there is no menu system that will beat Blackmagic, it's so good. It's funny you commented here because I haven't spoken about the S5 in ages and was meant to put a video out with some s5 clips but I have to put out another video first. Looking back on the clips I think the S5 is simply superb, love the image from that camera. It'll probably be out new years day so please look out for it 🙌🏾
New to the channel. Love your Breakdowns Brother easy to grasp and very genuine. Keep up the good work and you definitely have a new subscriber. Looking forward to your next drop, Cheers from N.Y.C
Hey Relz, thank you so much 🙌🏾 I really am a simple guy when it comes to gear. Although it's good to know the technical aspects it's also not good to be blinded by all the bells & whistles because when working a high pressure shoot...simple is better.
Respect, Colin. This is why I have the S1H from day dot. There are plenty of great cameras out there, but for me the Lumix S line are the best all-purpose cameras. They tick all the boxes for me and I'm happy to see you're loving your S5. Your custom gear is dope though... I need to make my own ish lolol. Peace brother! Thanks for another great vid.
Thank you sir 🙌🏾 it's definitely an affordable powerhouse and you can't really go wrong. Yes after the work calms down I will definitely put out some stuff.
Man all thing what you tell was in my mind for a long time. Thanks man for this video and now I know which camera I will buy. P.S would like to see more videos from you!
Hey, thank you for this comment...it's great feedback and good to know the style works. I don't want to go over technical...it's all about real world situations. I'll definitely try to get more videos out in in-between work and family.
Great video and comparison. I'd say just be careful, not sure 8 bit and VLOG play nicely together. It's definitely a log profile that really shines in 10 bit. Plus if you use the black magic video assist monitor you can record to braw. Just brought it up since you have a BM4k as well.
Thank you and yes you're correct, 10bit & VLog is definitely the way to go. recently bought the Video Assist 12g and it's great... haven't done a side by side with the p4k yet though.
Thanks for the video, man! I know you shoot in manual but can it be used with autofocus? At least, for talking head videos? Especially, with the adapted Sigma 18:35...
Hey, thank you for the comment. Ok...I've seen some talking head videos where they used AF and it seemed to work well with Native lenses. I haven't tried with adapted lenses yet but I'm not expecting a good outcome ESPECIALLY with the sigma 18-35 as I think the electronic performance of this lens and motors aren't great at all. I'm quite an animated person so I know even talking head with native wouldn't work for me. Most of the UA-camrs I've seen using it are like statues with moving lips 😅
I have been using the S5 with the NINJA V and Prores Raw for about a year now and I just really like working with Panasonic's color science in post both from internal recording with V-Log and when recording externally. The camera's versatility has been great for a camera of it's price! As a davinci editor, the Prores raw workflow is nonexistent so converting for grading can be kind of a pain with large batches of files but with enough preproduction I would absolutely reccomend for people who need a mirrorless hybrid form factor.
Went to two S5's from Sony and g95. Focus and auto iso is a challenge but it is making me much more aware of my pacing and making me better, also 1.5 stops less ibis than G95.
I’ve had 2 S5s for a while now! They paid for themselves quickly so I’m well chuffed. I’m contemplating buying an S1h and going full in on the Panasonic system. I was gonna get an A7siii incase I ever need good AF but it means having 2 lens mounts. The l mount primes are all brilliant imo.
Awesome, that's very reassuring that you've done well with them. I too have contemplated Sony but I just keep thinking that I'm paying all that extra money for good AF....I'm not sure if I'm missing anything but when I was trying out the a7r4 I couldn't see where the money was going other than AF. S1h is amazing too but before I go fully in on Panasonic I'll wait and see if their next versions add phase detection for a good price.
Storage was also the factor that made me choose the p4k over the sigma FP. I have 3 storage options with fantastic BRAW performance. Maybe if you factor the cost of storage into each project, it's doable.
Love the video, I have the S5 and had the Atoms but sold it and bought a Video Assist as my B Cam is the BMPCC4K so now I get 5.9k with my S5 and Video Assist in BRaw and 4K BRAW with the BMPCC4K and they are a great pairing for all my documentary work. Enjoyed the video thanks for sharing .
Hi mate, thanks for the comment. I really should have done that too 😔 even though my atomos is brand new I may just sell it and get assist. I tried using fcpx again but it's just not me anymore. Did you buy your VA used?
@@AltCine nice one hope it works out for you as it as done for me. I don't regret it at all as it has both proRes HQ and BRAW the the video assist is 2500 nits. I also use Samsung T5 with it so media is cheap too. 🙂
@@MyJeanf yeah very expensive, not gonna lie...I felt this purchase 😅 As long as it makes things easier when matching & editing (which it will) it's a worthwhile purchase. If you didn't comment your experience then I wouldn't have bothered.
It seems we are always in the same mind set! The S5 is the ONLY Full Frame camera I'd consider and honestly it's just as much a Hybrid Cinema Camera as the more expensive cameras like the FX3 and R5C for a 1/4 the cost! I've been obsessed with shooting in ProRes RAW on the OM-1. If I didn't need a faster camera for work I would have grabbed an S5 for sure! You CANNOT beat that camera!
You are absolutely right! Definitely as good as fx3. Yes fx3 has a couple more features but it's the same both ways. Such a great cam bro and we definitely think alike 😁
@@AltCine I even think the S5 is more of a cinema hybrid since it actually has shutter angle and waveforms doesn’t it? The FX3 only now got TC and Cine EI which are great but not enough for the price difference!
Yo bro you are great love the video I also have the Sigma FPN you are right it is an absolute jewel of a camera. It’s gonna go down as one of those cameras that everybody wish they would’ve grabbed for the money I am now a subscriber keep going love your work
Thank you for your kind comments, really appreciate it🙌🏾 Yes it's crazy that sigma have only a few basic camera's but are able to drop this beauty on us! It really is remarkable what they have done . And yes I agree that people (Inc me 😅) wish they grabbed one. When I was looking a few weeks ago they were around £1100 now it's £1300+
I hear that! It's so good turning up to a job with a small case. I think the GH6 is a great camera with strong features but since AF is out of the question...it wasn't a big deal in adapting lenses for the S5....if the commlite durable 😅
@@AltCine yeah of course the S5 is a beast for its price, I was considering buying it but Zeek sold his, saying the BMPCC6K was better... And also, the GH6 has better internal codecs. But well, I have not tested anything, so I can't wait to see what you will say about this S5!
@@stephanes. Yeah I saw zeeks vid. When we had that discussion about aliasing and then realised the p4k didn't have a filter either...it kind eased my mind. I love blackmagic and would never sell my p4k it's just hard because of the varied work going on. Hopefully one day we can settle on just one cam but the prices are so reasonable now that it's not too difficult to have choice.
It's funny how we think very similarly. I also prefer as small and affordable a set up as possible. I too used to shoot full frame and then went with the Pocket 4K. I now miss full frame. Though I haven't pulled the trigger on my full frame choice. Unfortunately, I sold all my Canon lenses when I went with Sony back in the day. I am leaning toward the Sony A7IV or the Sony A7Siii because of my lens situation but the S5 is still a main contender. But now I am so in love with False Color from the Pocket 4K. The S5 has Waveform which I like too but False Color has been great.
It sounds like we're very similar lol. All the stuff you mentioned Inc eco system really play a part in what you can choose without going crazy. And yes, you gain one thing but loose another with these cams and I think that's why I don't own one particular brand. Yes you have to match them in post but I like to have options. Thank you for the comment mate.
I really wish the FP had IBIS. The EIS is unusable in RAW, which really defeats the purpose IMO. It means you need a stabilized lens if you want to do handheld with the FP, and L Mount has very few options with OIS (the 24-105 f/4 was my favorite).
@@AltCine same here. im about to upgrade to a new cine-camera and im torn right now. and for some reason the S5 is more expensive than the FP here in the states
S5 is one of the most underrated cameras! It's just fun to shoot with the camera, I use Ninjav and when I use ProRes RAW 4.1K, 60P, the Auto Focus also works very well.
Thank you 🙏🏾 I just set it at 24mm minimum. I have the zoom reading display on the screen so I know which focal length I'm at. I've just watched the video by Micro four Nerds about shooting in Open Gate and that such a good option for shooting in landscape but having the option to output 16:9 or 9:16 with a very small resolution drop. It also cuts out the vignette from the sigma so it's going to be a game changer for my work.
Something you have to take into account with the image quality is that the FP has a downscaled 6k image so comparing it to the p4k is going to be a bit off, comparing to the p6k would be a more accurate comparison.
I hear that and honestly would never have tested these side by side if Justin didn't say the FP was better than the p4k. That being said...the p4k & FP are very similar priced so it does have some merit to test these. Finally if I'm being really honest....it doesn't really matter, I think they're both great and can both get the job done, it's just a matter of which one is easier and more affordable to work with.
@@AltCine Huh, you guys must have very different pricing to Australia, over here the FP is priced nearer to the p6k now that the p6k g2 is released. ~$2800 for p6k, ~$2700 for FP, ~$1500 p4k. I agree it has to be what you are using it for and how it works comparatively for each individual, just the comment on the image quality struck me as the FP is a full-frame 6k sensor, and 4k is a super-35 4k sensor so the image quality difference will be quite large between the 2, particularly in regards to noise and light.
Yeah I hear Australia and Canada have extremely high prices for gear it's crazy. At the time of this video and about a month before I saw fp selling used in good condition for £900 😮
@@AltCine noice, I have been tempted by the rabbit hole of FP, but want to wait and see how much they open up the l-mount. Now that canon have basically buggered RF. But still thinking maybe something with 12-14bit colour like an Ursa etc.
Thank you brother. From what I've read regarding some features of the FP L it's actually better to get the FP. If we look at the base iso for instance ,the high iso base range for FP L is 1250. On the FP it's 3200 so you should benefit from a cleaner image in low light and shadows. The FP L is meant to have phase detection AF (please check this) but apparently it's still not good. The only real benefit from my limited reading would be the anti aliasing filter in the FP L but you'll have to decide if it's worth the significant price jump.
Coming from a massive Sony fan boy who has a the new a7 iv... The S5 has the most cinematic looking footage in its class of hybrid cameras and especially for the price..
I have a LUMIX G7 and have done some decent work with it. Music videos, corporate, commercial, etc. but I’m trying to upgrade and get a new A camera soon…I’m between LUMIX G9, Sigma FP, S5 and BMPCC 6K…all the videos I’m watching is not making my decision any easier lol. I want to stay with Panasonic but really liking the video I have seen from the FP and BMPCC.
Man I totally understand your situation. It's very hard to choose and the ones you've listed are all good...I wish I could offer you more guidance but as you can see, I had a hard time choosing myself. For what it's worth...I would never give up my p4k.
See if you can find it in your country or try AliExpress as it's quite expensive. cvp.com/product/tilta-ta-t08-th1-b-qr-top-handle-komodo?v=a&gclid=CjwKCAjww8mWBhABEiwAl6-2RZ3zWaJ3PXJXk7t-WJ5RRTvxxgpuxdRAEd9p0CrwllAHzw8J3qgLbhoCGW8QAvD_BwE
Great review as always what's the autofocus like on S5? I notice you do a lot of stripping (ouh err) not sure how you do it but a good way is to soak in oven cleaner particularly Sainsbury's own is good n cheap with great results keep up the good work Colin 👌
Thanks Tony 😁 I've only tried AF on adapted lenses and it's not great for video....but Panasonic is no good for AF imo so it's always disabled. Oven cleaner 😮 very interesting! I'm trying that tonight lol
Awesome, I honestly don't think you can go wrong with this camera if you're used to manual focus. Thanks man, the handle is definitely my favourite... probably the closest I'll get to owning anything arri 😅
You are correct 👍🏾 I did mention that in the video. To make it useable for very long shoots, sigma should have added a compressed version like bmpcc OG. If they did, youd still have all the benefits of 12bit raw, smaller file sizes, no need to spend a fortune on recording media and no need for slim raw.
@@AltCine As far as I know BMPCC OG does not have compressed RAW (P4K is not OG). And one reason for not having compressed RAW is the stupid RED patent
Oh by the way, there is some talk about there being an S5H which is supposed to be a S1H body with a lower megapixel sensor. Not sure how true this is. But, Panasonic has stated they plan on utilizing Hybrid AF on their future cameras and the Sony A7SIII sensor is now able to be purchased by other manufacturers...so I'm thinking they might possibly use this sensor for that camera. That could be a heck of a camera in the future! But sounds like it'll be pricey lol
Love the Arri Handle refurb, inventive AF! Yeah these portrait mode stories/reels are very Now Dahhhling 😆, I have actually taken some of those on my GH5s and G9 as they both have the ability to tell FCPX that it’s supposed to be in 9x16 and Boom, no resizing required! On the subject of EF lenses; as well as the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and the Tokina 11-16 f2.8, I now have a Tamron 45mm f1.8 which has built in stabilisation (albeit mild) which is very handy on the GH5s !!
Cheers man, definitely one of my fave handles because it's personal. I didn't know fcpx does that automatically 😮 I actually want to get back into fcpx because I just find it much quicker than resolve so thanks for the tip. Stabilised lenses are definitely the way to go.... especially with blackmagic for run and gun.
@@AltCine I’ve only used it for short clips (of my grandson) in 1080 (with VFR set to 75fps) but I just import it to FCP and drop it straight onto the timeline and (thanks to a recent firmware update on the G9 and GH5s ) I don’t do any resizing. Pretty sure it would be the same in 4k.
@@AltCine I just checked that 4k worked: I recorded a clip at 3840x2160 25p 422 10bit 150Mbps (with the camera in portrait orientation) and dropped it straight into FCPX, chose camera LUT of Panasonic VLOG to Rec 709, and exported it as a 4k (1216x2160) m4v, no problem. I set the camera menu option of Vertical Position Info (video) to ON
Really I just need to see the lens that come with it, or what can be bought, I’m just feeling cine lens more, price for that camera amazing, no doubt. And full frame for social media is where it’s at for those jobs.
100% where it's at for social media. I haven't tested that kit lens but some reviews said it was decent. I think with l mount it looks like adapting a set of manual primes is the way to go.
What do I think? Too phat for me lol, but then I'm partly still on old tech, miniDV/dvcam etc, and have a AG-HPX250EJ for the kind of things you seem to use that rig for.
Great review, I bought the lumix s5 a year and a half ago, and it really was the best camera I had, many underestimated the s5 when it was released, but it delivers photos and videos with excellent quality, along with the ninja 5 everything is still better, but heavier, the only negative point for me is the auto focus, so I ended up getting the Sony a7iv 6 months ago, but I keep my darling lumix s5, God bless.
Hi JL, Thank you for this comment. Yes it really delivers and excellent image that is very flexible. I understand about the AF and you can't go wrong with Sony but I'm glad to hear your experience with S5 is positive. God bless 🙏🏾
Excellent review. And probably answers a lot of the questions others might have. But for my uses still would pick the fp. Although I now think I want a G9 too.
Hey Roly, for you most definitely. I know you're always on the run and like a truly pocketable size rig. Nonetheless...the FP is still high up on the list as one of the best small cams money can buy. G9 is good option for traveling light👌🏾
I use a Canon 90D as my all-purpose video and still cam. Been a canon user since 2009 and had all the x0D series. I'm really tempted by full frame, have been for years, but I don't really understand why. Might be social pressure. I don't film for work, it's a hobby loosely related to my profession (enough to get the tax deduction) Sometimes I get frustrated and want to throw it all out and switch to Sony or Lumix. I'm really impressed with the A7siii, but Sony full frames are astronomically expensive in my view. And then I see something interesting like the BMPCs and the FP. The S5 seems very reasonably priced. Does the AF give you problems? Have you tried the S5 in apsc mode at all? I have so many lenses that size...
@@jeffreyjbyron I think a lot of people buy good camera's just for documenting things like hobbies and family which kinda takes me back to the 80's. I'll be honest with you...since switching to full frame I do enjoy it more, the way it looks and the options it gives me but to say it's night & day over crop sensors is not a reasonable assessment as they both have strength's and weaknesses. If you must have AF then I'm afraid it has to be Sony or Canon. The AF on the S5 can work in very strict circumstances ie a fixed object that's being moved very slowly or a talking head where you're mostly in the centre. I don't want to sound judgemental but people who say it's good or useable are either trying to justify their purchase or haven't used a recent cam with good AF. I have used crop mode and I have no problem with it as most of my other bodies are apsc or m43. I too have mostly crop lenses the only full frame I have are 50mm STM and Helios. The beauty is if I use the sigma 18-35 from 25mm upwards there's no vignette. If I need more reach or tighter shot...I can jump into crop mode so usually I only need to carry one lens.
@@AltCine thanks for the honesty. It's really surprising to me that they can't figure out the AF. This is a flagship product for their brand, right? Is this a "crippling" case? Do they have another cam system with better AF and they are intentionally limiting this and the gh line?
@@AltCine One more question, how does the S5 do in low light? If I ever switched to Sony if would be for the high ISO settings. Ever since I saw the DVX100 and what that little camcorder could do I never gave up on Panasonic. Something about using them just feels creative to me.
Well technically ALL recorder's offer compression. The better question is 'which recorder's offer manageable raw compression '. At the moment there's not much choice, it's either Atomos or Blackmagic. Blackmagic offers better compression but it's a very expensive unit.
@@AltCine I've actually been "out of the game" for a good 10 years and I'm looking at picking back up. Didn't know about the video assist. Seems like a no-brainer to me to pair them together if you are someone who is building a kit from scratch especially if you can get good prices on both the camera and the monitor/recorder. I'll have to look more into this as well as regards to how camera scratch audio and timecode from a separate audio recorder would all connect together if they can. Hoping this is workable solution as both an event operator and for smaller crew narrative film sets.
@@buggzo ahhh I see. I understand because I only got into this game late 2017 and so much has changed already. So it sounds like you need a semi serious set-up for what you're doing, I hear Tentacle Sync is probably the best option for time code but I've never tried it myself.
I still rock gh4 , but debating gh5/5 6 or s5… I have m4/3 lenses and didn’t want to get s5 and have to buy bunch of full frame lenses LOL… (I also rock with m50/6II/90d) LOL
Damn....I thought I was bad, sounds like you'll be able to open a shop soon lol. I hear you about buying all the lenses again..such a pain. I specifically went 80% EF for this reason.
Super informative and great vid bro! Love your rig and all the various rigging options you can put together in different scenarios. Especially that handle that swivels around 👌🏽
Thank you Jay 😁 yeah definitely need things to switch up quickly, just makes things so much easier on jobs or personal projects. The Tilta rotating handle is an amazing design. Anyone with a midsized camera should own one.
The s1h has a few better features like anti aliasing filter and I believe it does 5.k internal recording. There's a few more features but it's better for video.
Thank you brother. I know man 😅 I really need to fire up that eos-m soon. I've actually been using it for a lot of photos lately as the image is really nice. Also because it's so small it's perfect accompaniment to a larger video rig. I see that Zeek hasn't done much either and he's usually quite consistent 🤔
@@AltCine true, You need to post the video soon, with a topic like the cheapest pro cinema camera "THE EOS M". This new update might be a major breakthrough for filmmakers with low budget and even some of the big bugdet indi film companies. People don't understand it clear, but we are moving to a new age, where you get a pro computer for $700 "m1 air” we can now record 32bit audio on a $150 recorder "zoom f2" have pro light for $100 "godox sl60". Honestly it is crazy for $2500 you can buy a bmpcc 6k or a production pro set🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@birianination7097 haha yes it's very true. I have a piece of work that should be released this month and I used the eos-m for a couple shots. It's been delayed but we got an email recently stating it should be this month. Hopefully if it comes out I will tie it in to an eos-m video as this is absolutely HUGE!
Bought the S5 few month after it came out. had a G9 before. recently bought the GH6. Gh6 and 50-200 and the S5 with the silly but very useful 20-60 this might be the best runNGun setup i ever had: same batteries, the xlr thingy works on both... got the sigma 45 2.8 but it's at home most of the time... Not sure where to go next with the L-lenses: lumix 35 and 85 1.8? sigmas i-series? what would you go for if you'd need the "native lens advantages"? the commlite adapter is a very good tip though!
That's a great selection you have there 👌🏾 do you still enjoy using the S5? Having multiple accessories that fit both must be extremely handy too. Judging by the current lenses you have I'd say the 85 1.8 seems like the logical choice but I guess it depends on what you shoot.
Funny you should mention the 20 - 60 on the S5 as its my working focal range full frame. So much so I even considered the GH6 just for the 10-25 f1.7 because also f3.5 full frame is also my main Fstop I work at.
I have the pocket 4K what do think of the ursa12k pro? Thoughts? A bit over kill for the work your doing ? I know your staying light weight, thinks it’s a bit to bulky?
Love the video , for me it’s really a tool that depends on that you do. A great camera but the black magic image sold me and I tend to use my 6k pro for almost all paid work. But if I truly need IBIS or am going for a specific full frame look I still have it B available
Thank you 🙏🏾 I agree with you on Blackmagic image...it is definitely one of the best out there. I'll still keep my p4k for most of my work, no doubt about it.
The storage thing happens because of the uncompressed DNG files from the fp right? whereas BRAW has been built such that it saves storage but is not uncompressed raw. still good enough for everyone lol.
Yes exactly, b-raw isn't real raw as it has debayer in camera which is compression but still very functional. CDNG is definitely better but will the client notice?
@@AltCine nop. The "clients" have usually no idea what theyre watching as long as it looks good it the most basic way. You can show a client clipping footage and they wont see it as theyre focused on the performace.
Thanks for saving me from a hdd headache. I want happy w bmpcc file sizes (dont own one), but FP is crazy. Currently own a riggedout CANON M6mk2 w SIGMA 16mm on a 1.6x APCS EF-M // +sub
Lol don't worry, we're all guilty of multiple typo's lol. I understand your wants for the camera. For me I'd agree with ibis but even just better compression would have been enough for me.
Don't use an hammer if you need a screwdriver. I use my Sigma fps all the time. The Lumix s5 sometimes and the BMPCC 4k not at all anymore. Going to sell the P4k and just keep using my BMPCC OGs with RAW. I don't like the large size of the P4K and can't be bothered lugging it along. I'd rather deal with my 16Tb worth of SDDs.
@@AltCine I think my point was that for your needs you don't need 12-bit RAW but 10-bit log with IBIS as you need a quick turnaround 😁. So, you need a tool suited for that, my only gripe is that I am fed up with that YTbers need to condescend the Sigma fp because they feel they need to justify that they need another tool. I just ordered my 3rd Sigma fp as I don't need AF, IBIS, log, small file sizes, but only pure raw and amazing image quality.
@@AltCine All the thanks to you... for sharing such valuable advice and experience ... Good luck with all you are doing... P. S I like the fact you don't hesitate to drill holes when they help..
S5 Power all day. It's so powerful for the price I get overwhelmed on what I want to shoot and end up not shooting anything because my skill is not good enough to draw out the full power of the gem that is the S5.
Crazy bro...sooo much camera for the price! You see the reels I did when on my date? You should do those. Very quick and easy, they look great when you have interesting subjects, quick to shoot, edit and grade. If they don't turn out well there's not much time lost. They're very good practice.
@@AltCine I did see the reels. I think that's how I found out you had the S5. =) Agreed. Just going to have to go out there and do it. Even if it's myself. =O
The S5 can easily be sold for more than 3k with its solid build and features. Panasonic, as a company, is unlike Sony or Canon who would charge a bomb for every small feature they would put in their cameras. You didn't mention VLog, which comes absolutely free with S5. It's the exact same codec used by high end Panasonic cinema cameras. Many feature films have been filmed in this codec. As for business, with S5 you can now pitch for every high end project in town. We tested the latest Arri 35 yesterday and the 16 stop dynamic range is a joke. To match the Arri look (if you want to) you should rather invest in some ultra primes. The glass is the most important thing. It would stay with you forever. What Panasonic has really done is give us a dream camera at an unbelievable price sparing us a lot of money to buy some really good glass. One of my cinematography teachers (two of his films are with The Library of Congress) confided in me how much he is in love with the GH5 and uses it everyday. That is another scintillating device.
Hi Dinesh, great comment and I will pin this. Because it's been out for a while I didn't go into too much detail but your comment is solid 🙌🏾 ! Proper VLog is exceptional and I really enjoy grading it so thank you for your insights. It's crazy how much they packed into this camera whilst keeping the price point so low...truly stunned by this!
I am thinking about getting a second Sigma Fp for stills as my first one is all rigged up for video. But if I am to get a second camera for stills, I want better autofocus and maybe a higher MP count. Still trying to decide. The Sony A7 IV seems great but then its a new ecosystem of lenses. Suggestions appreciated.
Gosh, I totally feel you on this one! I have different mounts Inc M, m43, and L so I had no choice but to ditch most of my glass and go mostly EF. I hear L mount Panasonic have great AF for photos with native lenses so that might be a good option and at least you can use your sigma fp glass.
@@AltCine Thank you! Yeah Panasonic is always on my mind. I have a few Cine lenses that are EF. The good news seems to be that EF can be converted to both L and Sony E, but you cannot adapt L to E, which is frustrating. The Cine lenses are all manual. (Rokinon) so not useful for stills really when you need to be fast. I guess its down to Lumix or Sony but the Lumix has from what I can gather, about the same autofocus as the Sigma Fp. By the way, I LOVE my Fp. I just have to spray and pray for stills hoping one is in focus either for wildlife or at a public event. But rigged with a Ninja and a Follow-focus it gets great video. Recording to an SSD means a very small rig with great video, but you need a LOT of computer to digest Cinema DNG. Someday maybe I can afford all the toys I want.
@@JamesCohenCaravan yeah definitely EF for now. So you use all mf lenses which makes sense for a cine rig. Maybe a Sony then and just get a fast zoom...but that's going to be some big bucks! I use olympus EM1 MK2 for video and photo is pretty good but it has no animal, vehicle detection etc. It really is hard to choose when shoot many different topics....sometimes I feel like Sony and a ninja would be the best. Lastly, The sigma fp is amazing bro..please don't think I'm knocking it in any way. It's the future of filmmaking imo.
good price ...I was thinking about this camera and the the GH6....but im thinking more BMPCC6K m2 for the screen the evf and full frame also colour match my p4k ....i have gh2 hacked and a GX 8.....hey now i just seen home....Im in i Live in Argentina now but im a brixton man i just saw the windmill from wind mill park....im right Yeah. I from bonham rd estate...1969- 84
Yo my brother, ahhh Brixton 😁 it's changed so much now...it's quite an expensive place to live. Having tested the GH6 and the S5 I prefer the S5 (obviously lol) The GH6 is great too but I didn't feel compelled to buy it after testing. It's good if you can get camera's from the same manufacturer as it's going to make your life easy but so much can be done in post these days it's not a massive problem.
Great video. But a warning to everyone interested in the commodities: DONT GET IT. It may very well break your camera because of huge tolerances in production.
PLEASE NOTE - 4K 60 DCI is 8bit. 4K 60 UHD is 10bit

Hi, no problem and glad you found it useful 👍🏾👍🏾
The S5 is an insanely good camera man, amazing what you can get with US$1,500(ive seen body only go for even less new). Great video man, glad i played a part in convincing you to get one, thanks so much for the mention! I have learned a lot from you bro. These videos are great Colin, keep em coming man seriously.
Hey Joel, it really is good and thank you for the recommendation. I hope we can keep discussing our options as I really enjoy the chats 👌🏾
Hey Anson, awesome we're in it together now 😁
Yeah external is a good option.
Awesome! Yes I saw a few vids stating the S1 was better for video for the reasons you stated and more.
Great camera 👌🏾
The S1 to me is the best in the S series line up.
@@ShellyBHollis Agreed
That’s an awesome kit. I purchased mine in the US for 1899 plus lumix 85mm 1.8 for free. Its a great camera.
Damn that's a good price! 85 f1.8 😮 that must look amazing
Absolutely love your videos. Informative with a natural presenting style 👍
Thank you Ace, you're very kind 🙌🏾
I went the other way lol. Got rid of my pocket 4k a while ago and now have the FP. I love that its also a good still camera as well as a killer video camera. Its also so small so I can just take it anywhere for both stills and video. If I need something with auto focus I use the A7s3, but most the time I use the sigma.
Well one thing for sure is we definitely can't argue about its size!!! It's a proper pocket cinema cam.
Is the rolling shutter better with the FP than with the pocket 4K?
The pocket 4k is much better than the FP. That mostly comes down to the smaller sensor on p4k.
If jump up to p6k it's worse but I think still better than fp
@@Chandler_Goodrich TBH no idea as its not really something that i notice in my use case.
Thanks for the insigt on the Lumix. Your conversational style of presenting helps to understand the content.
Thank you, such a nice comment. I try not to get overly technica and roboticl so I'm glad you still found it useful 🙌🏾
That sucks but I guess it's better than nothing 😅
And thank you. I know you could always rent stuff to keep the costs down but I prefer to own affordable gear.
Great video IMCE. Mind sharing the EF to L mount adapter link? I'm looking to get the s5 in the future soon!

Great vid. Love how you improvise with what you have to maximise your set ups efficiency!
Thank you 😁 I'm definitely not trying to spend any more than I have to. Thanks for commenting mate
I didn’t know that the S5 from 2020 is considered an “old” camera now :D. Otherwise, nice video man!
Looool yeah I was pondering on the title 😅 it's not that old but I guess in terms of technology some would consider it old.
Thank you
@@AltCine you’ve finally succumbed to clickbait titles ! Haha just kidding!! Keep up great work!
I love the S5, I use it on all my shoots, and the safe margin frame guides are brilliant for social content too! Great video mate!
This camera absolutely rocks!
Absolutely!!!!

Hey Relz, thank you so much 🙌🏾 I really am a simple guy when it comes to gear. Although it's good to know the technical aspects it's also not good to be blinded by all the bells & whistles because when working a high pressure shoot...simple is better.
Respect, Colin. This is why I have the S1H from day dot. There are plenty of great cameras out there, but for me the Lumix S line are the best all-purpose cameras. They tick
all the boxes for me and I'm happy to see you're loving your S5. Your custom gear is dope though... I need to make my own ish lolol. Peace brother! Thanks for another great vid.
Great video, you have me thinking about an upgrade and Lumix. Can't wait to see and hear more about your experience with the S5.

Question : Why set up on constant bit rate over constant quality on your Blackmagic? thq for the vids.
Tbh I flick between them depending what I'm doing and how much detail is in the background.
Thank you Ozzy
I couldn't agree with you more! Like you I absolutely adore shooting with the S5 and there's not much I'd change about it
Went to two S5's from Sony and g95. Focus and auto iso is a challenge but it is making me much more aware of my pacing and making me better, also 1.5 stops less ibis than G95.
Yeah I think you have to give up on the fact that Pana’s have AF in their cams…it’s just not useable imo. Auto iso? Why are you shooting in auto?
@@AltCine yeah giving up sounds good. So much easier.
Yeah man, storage is definitely a factor that you have to consider. Yes you could definitely factor it in for jobs too 👌🏾
I sold my FP 8 months ago and bought the S5 No Regret But I Miss the form factor of The FP and the color profiles especially orange and teal look
Yeah fp definitely has that nice boxy shape and we'll built too but you can get a lot more done withe the S5.

Picked up a video assist today 😅
@@AltCine nice one hope it works out for you as it as done for me. I don't regret it at all as it has both proRes HQ and BRAW the the video assist is 2500 nits. I also use Samsung T5 with it so media is cheap too. 🙂
@@MyJeanf yeah very expensive, not gonna lie...I felt this purchase 😅
As long as it makes things easier when matching & editing (which it will) it's a worthwhile purchase.

Yes it's crazy that sigma have only a few basic camera's but are able to drop this beauty on us! It really is remarkable what they have done .
And yes I agree that people (Inc me 😅) wish they grabbed one. When I was looking a few weeks ago they were around £1100 now it's £1300+
Great video! Picked one up with zacuto cage, smallrig side and top handle, and body and lens used for $1400
i too want to go for a minimum rig now, that's why I'm interested in the GH6, but no full frame of course. At least, Lumix lenses are cheap and fast

You can add false colour as a custom VLog LUT on the S5 :)
Ohhh that's interesting, I'll definitely have to do that. Thank you, it's a great tip 🙌🏾
@@paulmerced5587 you may have sold me on the S5. But again, my lens situation... I will have to look up how to set up the custom LUT for false color.
I really wish the FP had IBIS. The EIS is unusable in RAW, which really defeats the purpose IMO. It means you need a stabilized lens if you want to do handheld with the FP, and L Mount has very few options with OIS (the 24-105 f/4 was my favorite).
I agree mate, ibis with this small camera would make this a killer. Sigma are so close to having the perfect cam....so close.
I’m using an easy rig and the shots are usable
cant Sigma change this in firmware?
I'm 90% sure they could as there's compression already applied in some modes ie lowering bitrate and 1080.
I really hope they do
@@AltCine same here. im about to upgrade to a new cine-camera and im torn right now. and for some reason the S5 is more expensive than the FP here in the states
S5 is one of the most underrated cameras!
It's just fun to shoot with the camera, I use Ninjav and when I use ProRes RAW 4.1K, 60P, the Auto Focus also works very well.
Absolutely correct! Very enjoyable to shoot with 🙌🏾
That Tilta handle disappeared man. I tried searching for it but don't know the model name.
Great video brotha! You know what you're talking about! You earned a sub.
Thank you bro, very much appreciated 🙌🏾
@@AltCine Ofc. Keep it up!! Looking forward to more content!
love the choice! Do you shoot in crop mode when using the 18-35, or how do you get around the s35 crop of the lense?
Thank you 🙏🏾 I just set it at 24mm minimum. I have the zoom reading display on the screen so I know which focal length I'm at.
I've just watched the video by Micro four Nerds about shooting in Open Gate and that such a good option for shooting in landscape but having the option to output 16:9 or 9:16 with a very small resolution drop. It also cuts out the vignette from the sigma so it's going to be a game changer for my work.
@@AltCine makes sense, thank you!
I recently heard about the open gate idea as well and have to try that out especially for vertical content. Brilliant idea!
the tilta handle looks so cool!!!
Yeah I love the handle. I wish I could use it on p4k but that camera is too wide.
I get blown away each time I watch your videos at how much you've grown 😃 Congrats Colin. You deserve it and more 🤜🔥🤛
Thank you brother, I really appreciate that. It's hard to do videos these days as I'm busy or trying to relax but I'm trying 😁
Thanks for the videos! Curious about your oppinion on the FP L?
🙂👏👏👏
Thank you brother. From what I've read regarding some features of the FP L it's actually better to get the FP.
If we look at the base iso for instance ,the high iso base range for FP L is 1250. On the FP it's 3200 so you should benefit from a cleaner image in low light and shadows.
The FP L is meant to have phase detection AF (please check this) but apparently it's still not good.
The only real benefit from my limited reading would be the anti aliasing filter in the FP L but you'll have to decide if it's worth the significant price jump.
I have both and I use FP for video and photography, FP L for photography. FP L has a 62Mpx sensor so rolling shutter gets to be a problem
Coming from a massive Sony fan boy who has a the new a7 iv... The S5 has the most cinematic looking footage in its class of hybrid cameras and especially for the price..
I agree with you on that. Looking around on UA-cam there were a couple of people that really made the camera shine as cinema camera.

I’ve been eyeing off an S5, great video! Also that custom Arri handle is awesome!
Awesome, I honestly don't think you can go wrong with this camera if you're used to manual focus.
Thanks man, the handle is definitely my favourite... probably the closest I'll get to owning anything arri 😅
Haha that transforming handle🤩
😂😂 it's awesome
Sigma Fp offers Cinema DNG 4K at 12 bit does it not? And it writes directly to SSD such as a Samsung T5.
@@AltCine Thanks again for answering. I have a LOT to learn still. But other than the frustration, that is the fun part.
Ohhhh that would be great if it happens, the S5 would make a perfect backup cam for that.
Great video, man. Thanks
Thank you Luke. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment.
@@colinthecameraguy awesome I will try that. Capturing family is more important than capturing products for money.
Happy shooting mate 👌🏾
@@AltCine I just checked that 4k worked:
I recorded a clip at 3840x2160 25p 422 10bit 150Mbps (with the camera in portrait orientation) and dropped it straight into FCPX, chose camera LUT of Panasonic VLOG to Rec 709, and exported it as a 4k (1216x2160) m4v, no problem.

Too phat for me lol, but then I'm partly still on old tech, miniDV/dvcam
etc, and have a AG-HPX250EJ for the kind of things you seem to use that rig for.
🤣 it's a chunky one. As long as your tools work fo you, that's the main thing
Hi JL,
Thank you for this comment. Yes it really delivers and excellent image that is very flexible. I understand about the AF and you can't go wrong with Sony but I'm glad to hear your experience with S5 is positive.
God bless 🙏🏾
@@AltCine 👍🙏
Excellent review. And probably answers a lot of the questions others might have. But for my uses still would pick the fp. Although I now think I want a G9 too.
Hey Roly, for you most definitely. I know you're always on the run and like a truly pocketable size rig. Nonetheless...the FP is still high up on the list as one of the best small cams money can buy.
G9 is good option for traveling light👌🏾
You didn’t mention AF do you use it?
Great vid. What kind of lens mount is it?
Thank you 😁 it's EF to L mount. Still no issues so looks like a good purchase.
I use a Canon 90D as my all-purpose video and still cam. Been a canon user since 2009 and had all the x0D series. I'm really tempted by full frame, have been for years, but I don't really understand why. Might be social pressure. I don't film for work, it's a hobby loosely related to my profession (enough to get the tax deduction)
Sometimes I get frustrated and want to throw it all out and switch to Sony or Lumix.
How is there not an external recorder that does it's own compression?

Agreed.
