I’d like to see that Sony apsc 10 bit camera at around $2000. It would significantly reduce the barrier of entry. They would need to develop some lens that are more affordable then their 16-55mm g. Maybe like at the $500-$1000 price point. I decided to go all in with the a7siii and fx3, but I’m still paying for it….love them though.
I own both a Panasonic and a Nikon and every time I pick up the Panasonic I remember I cannot rely on autofocus lol. It's almost non existent. Nikon's got a really impressive autofocus along with fantastic straight out of camera colours. Sorry if it's a "boring" brand to you lol, their Z line is simply amazing
It feels like every time I watch a video where a creator shoots in log or raw and then color grades their footage, I'm like...oh, it looks just like what my Nikon shoots.
I started with a D5300 waaay back. I liked Nikon cameras, but I think Caleb is referring more to their lack of innovation or significant breakthrough in the video space to make people pay attention. The only thing I saw Nikon do that other companies picked up on was raw over HDMI for the Atomos Ninia V. I’m glad they did that.
As a Nikon shooter, I thoroughly disagree with the ranking. I use my Z6ii to film weddings, and the colors are great. Also, it shoots good 10-bit 4:2:2, albeit externally as well as 12-bit RAW. I wish you would have waited on this video, especially with the Z9 coming out soon with its insane specs.
If Z Cam had a CST in Resolve it would go a long way. But there are other quirks in their cameras that I’d like to have addressed too, to call them tier 1. It’s a decently long list, but even as is they’re still have a long list of things they do well. For the money they are a really compelling option for anyone needing a narrative or commercial camera.
L Mount user and I think your ranking is pretty fair except Nikon. Way too harsh, especially as so many have said, with the arrival of the Z9. I’d have put them in C. But your video, your opinion!
@@dslrvideoshooter yeah, I think you're right, and Canon is far from awful but it can't be placed in the same league as Sony. It only really beats it on colour out the camera but Sony smashes Canon in the rest, as your thumbnail suggests 🤣. Still a great video, perfectly timed for Black Friday. I started out Canon, moved to Lumix G Series but stuck with Sigma glass, and it was a close call just now but I'm sticking with Lumix but moving up full frame to the S5. I picked it over the A7IV just on price, really and the S5 is £300 off right now. I pull focus manually and for interviews, the AF is good enough. I'm a hybrid shooter and now I don't have to worry about moving over to a new system, even if it's better, and smash thousands on the G master lenses, something I'm not prepared to do. It's better but not that much better.
Great video! I agree 100%. Message to Canon, if they read it, stop protecting your video cameras. Most of content creators are hybrid shooters. I have Canon M50 and run 4 UA-cam channels with that but when I decide to upgrade for 4k, I have no choice but to go for Sony. I am sure there is more people like me. We are not going to buy your video cameras, we will give our money to competition who listens what we need and want. I am currently saving for Sony a7 IV as I don't like 30 min restriction on R6 and overheating problems. Canon wake up!
For the 99% you are absolutely right. Just with the Blackmagic close to last place i cant agree. You did not mention prices. Only because of the great image quality and the only brand with proper pricing, Blackmagic deserves at least one or two positions up. Raw, no overheating, great price, great image, good durabilty, top of the world menu, come on, they deserve more. I did critisize them too in my videos, but they did so much for the last 2 years, that Canon for the same developing will need a decade or two.
I never ever had an issue with the form factor of the blackmagic pocket cameras or the URSA models. I love the form factor the amazing rig customization you need to build to make the camera a cinema beast. Blackmagic is S class for me. But, the camera is just the tool and it’s all subjective.
A Lumix S5 is around £1500 in the UK, with 20-60. Sometimes less, depending on trade in deals. That puts the S5 half to a third the price of the competition. Better autofocus would be handy for vloggers, but AF is definitely usable with appropriate settings (-1 speed, -3 sensitivity for most of my shooting). If Sony style AF makes the S5 cost the same as other brands, no thanks, the Lumix beats everyone for video. Sub 5k is too big a range from entry level. Interesting comparison even so.
BMD has big form factor but it offers amazing 5 inches monitor with nice exposure tools no other camera offers ! I think it s quite unfair to blame BMD for the size.
Size isn't necessarily the issue. It is how that size is shaped and distributed. Love the screen quality and your right, 5 inch included monitor is great, but would be infinitely better if separate.
You are also forgetting that Caleb is shooting in a studio where nothing changes. Go rake these other cameras on the road and see how happy you will be without proper sound inputs, built in ND, proper post production workflow, no record limits, an actual menu screen that’s intuitive. Not sure why Caleb would even care about the form factor his cameras live on tripod. Bang for buck you cannot touch BMD. Yes. Battery sucks.....by a pocket full of them and a cheap cage and you’ll be all set.
Thank you for this awesome video, great job! One topic that is always neglected is SOUND! Man, if these cameras could have at least one XLR input with (optional) phantom power, plus 32 bit float recording, life would be perfect! No more bulky external sound recorders, less or no external microphone wiring and no more need to sync audio in post. And why 32 bit float? Because of the insane dynamic range, which will make it impossible to clip your audio or to introduce a lot of noise when amplifying very low sound (check out recorders like Zoom F6, Sound Devices Mixpre 3 ii or Tascam Portacapture X8).
Phew! Since I am terrible unsecure about my camera choices I was relieved to see Sony rank a "B". Could you please do a special video about the classic A6300 as the unsung hero of APS-C I'd be ever so grateful. :) (Seriously, a nice take on cameras and brands. Thank you.)
I agree with your list, except for Nikon. With the way they are going, I think they should be a C. Sure they're late to the mirrorless party but better late than never. And their autofocus has improved over the last firmware updates (especially the mark 2s)
Great video again, Caleb! I went back and forth with Sony A7Siii and Canon R5 but ended up buying R5. Eliminated the 2 mentioned problems (record limits and overheating) by buying Ninja V and will be upgrading to Ninja V+ now that they have the $999 promo. With original 24-70 lenses on both cameras and taking that Ninja V+ promo into account price difference is around $1,000 in Sonys favour. Sony has better low light performance but Canon+Ninja has 4K HQ, 8K, Prores + Prores Raw, big screen, SSD recording and as a big bonus high quality pro stills capability. A no-brainer for me.
It’s a good video but I largely disagree on your opinion towards blackmagic. I think the problem with these cameras are that they aren’t all arounder like Sony or canon mirror less, but if they match your needs, they are by far the best option on the market, for a lot of budgets. The fact that they have such a big impact on the market (the Komodo is a direct answer to that camera) means that it is a compelling option for a lot of people.
Great content. You tell it like it is. I almost didn't watch this for fear of what you might say about MY camera choice. You hit everything pretty much on the nose. Honest and Accurate. Thanks Caleb.
I think whats make a good camera brand is that what they're offering for the price range, in terms of features, lens choice . etc (and i think Panasonic are really good at making budget friendly cam with cool features) 🙌. If they can improve their AF they'll be a tough competitor to other brands.
I've never seen a perfect camera or a perfect videographer (hence the need to aquire more gear) - disclaimers out of the way, everyone has an opinion. The best camera is the one you know how to use and can get the results your after.
Great video, Caleb. I agree. You know what is funny? Canon EOS M with MagicLantern can record probably for days straight on h264, but may even 1080p raw without overheating. The only thing limiting time on that old camera is power and sd card. You can solve the power but I don't think you can do much about the SD Card other than get a 1TB.
*Does black magic have autofocus? Would it be good for a new UA-camr, zoom calls, etc.* I’m looking at the Sony A7c or Sony A7IV with a 20 or 24mm f1.4 or 1.8 Lens. Can you get the s-cinetone colours during zoom calls? Also, can you use the camera mic as a mic for zoom calls? Mainly the Sony microphone?
Man, you graded hard! I love the idea of leaving the A category for "perfect" cameras only. In that case, none of those companies should get an A until they have in-built wireless mics AND monitoring. This would replace a set of Rode wireless go mics (at least the receiver side) and something like airpods for wireless monitoring. That one improvement would remove SO much hassle and bulk from my kit - and I'm sure I'm not alone. Anyone who's stepped away from a camera on a tripod to have their earbuds ripped out unexpectedly, or pull the tripod down, upvote this comment! =) And if we're going EXTRA hard, those "A" cameras also have to have internal RAW recording and accept standard SSDs as media, like the Ninja V but built in.
I personally don't have autofocus issues with Fuji with 16-55 F2.8 lens, but yeah their other lenses, especially the older primes aren't good for video autofocus.
Good morning. I didn't watch thr video yet just came straight to the comments lol.. I used a few canons in the past, never used a Sony but I use a nikon Z6 for filming and for me it meets all my needs.
I have been using an R6 for about a year now, always shooting in 4k25 or 4k50 (except for a couple of times when I needed 100fps) and I have never ever had it overheat. My longest simultaneous recording was about 45 minutes (one tiny stop at 30min) and no issues with overheating at all. So for me and my use, overheating is not an issue by any means with the R6, but damn that 30min limit bugs me. It's not a huge deal for me, but it would be such an easy firmware fix, it makes no sense to have it there. Great video!
From what I recall that 30 minute limit is a legal/tax thing, where if a camera films under it, it's a photo camera but longer and it's a video camera which adds some sort of hassle enough to warrant it. Rusty on the details, but that's why that exists.
Thanks for the great video, love your view / perspective on this topic, As a suggestion, please introduce this as: Ranking cameras for solo-operators / videographers - I was quite confused at first 😅
Hey great video thanks, one question please what camera would you recommend for cooking videos 1080 60fps maybe 120fps for slowmo needs to have good stabilization for handheld shots over food moving and great autofocus so that when moving over different plates it focuses everything as we go over it and not lacking behind making the video unsharp, what are the budget options for this I does not have to be the latest model? thanks
Fair ranking. I love Panasonic and have shot with the GH5 for over four years now, but the autofocus really needs to be improved. If the GH6 doesn't drop by Q1 of 2022 with improved autofocus, I'm jumping ship lol
Fuji hybrid videographer/photographer here. I agree with your points. The autofocus has to improve. I am pretty satisfied with it for photography, but video leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not sure if you've seen their new trio of lenses, but the 18mm, 23mm, and 35mm with linear motors are supposedly a lot better at video auto-focus. Still, Fuji has to improve their algorithms and include object tracking! There are rumors about two new XH-2 cameras coming. One focused on video and the other focused on photo. That should be really interesting. Fuji already confirmed a back sided illuminated sensor, which should be huge. And making a cinema camera seems like a no-brainer choice. I've used their lenses in television production. They're such a popular choice by professionals. Why not create a body to attach them to? Also, imagine an actual good medium-format video camera. Untapped potential/market there. I'll probably use Fuji for photography for forever, but if the company doesn't improve their autofocus in-body and lenses, I may jump ship to Sony for my video needs.
I'm the rare Fuji shooter, and couldn't agree with you more about lenses. Some lenses work and some suck. The ones that do work are outstanding. The ones that don't are the ones I want to use most. Still don't know why a 50mm at f4.0 to 11 can't clutch a subject in autofocus. It's frustrating.
I 100% agree with this list. I would even put Sony at an A. As someone who has migrated from Canon to Sony, it’s flawless. I don’t get deep into the technical stuff like codecs and bitrates so I can’t speak to that. I realize those are some things holding it back from an A. I also had a Z Cam for a bit, great image. Really have to rig those things out to make them usable for run and gun.
Gotta say I agree with pretty much this entire video. One thing Sony could do to beat the competition that no one talks about is to sort out its image stabilisation, because it's terrible. Most of the vloggers I watch who rave about Sony are studio vloggers. Try vlogging in the street, up a mountain or at sea with a Sony. I have to run every clip through Catalyst, even with an 18mm lens. After all these years the GH5 is still my primary video camera, much as I would love to be using my Sony more.
I’ve been a Lumix shooter for a while now, and I don’t know if I see myself switching to anything else, despite the subpar autofocus (I prefer to manual focus anyway).
Another great video and a great tiered list. I started with Fujifilm and love the colors, but you nailed the fact that the autofocus situation for video is finicky, particularly when you film yourself. I was planning on moving to a Sony system next (when I can afford it), and this is another video that further justifies that future move.
You want the small form factor, the overheating is going to come with it. Chips get hot. Better manual fan control would be great in smaller cameras, but I feel what it would take to combat the heating problems would still get criticised. I've owned a Red Scarlet, Epic and Dragon, and while they get criticised for their loud fan, the control options they have for managing the speeds are incredibly useful.
Great points, agree completely and I use Panasonic. Personally though I would've put BMD higher as I'm not too bothered about a cinema camera having AF as it's a different workflow + THE PRICE ALONE lmao great video though boss!

I wish we had an a6300 size body with 10bit 422 internal 4k60. That would
Be a dream for me
I own both a Panasonic and a Nikon and every time I pick up the Panasonic I remember I cannot rely on autofocus lol.
@@DefiniteFiction they may be a bit late to the “insane specs no one actually needs” party but the Z9 is truly an innovating camera
You know Caleb puts effort into his vids when he's literally lightning his computer
That Nikon ranking was a difficult pill to swallow. Their autofocus still needs a lot of work… but I still love the files my z6 produce!
You are a the gold standard of these videos, sir!
He clearly never used a Nikon camera, or at least not recently.
Watching this while consoling my Sigma FP saying "no, no, he doesn't mean it. you're ace in my book". Excellent stuff as always!
L Mount user and I think your ranking is pretty fair except Nikon. Way too harsh, especially as so many have said, with the arrival of the Z9. I’d have put them in C. But your video, your opinion!
Bring all that love on down the price list and I'm in!
Surely Canon is a C based on your own judgement? How is Canon two places better than BMD? Crazy stuff, Caleb. Especially for a BMPC fan like yourself.
That is fair. Maybe more of a C. That said, autofocus and image are incredible and they make amazing camera bodies.
@@framedman specs aren’t the same as actually using the camera, where Sony and BMD fall down
Great video!
Oooooo I am excited for this!!! :D
Great honest review of these camera bodies. I own multiple cameras by one of the brands you reviewed and have exactly the same comments. Thank you.
That uncalibrated big as screen ? Yeah very useless tbh. The menu system is however, amazing !
@@bluestv8161 he's using them in a studio so he has AC power.
Notice how he didn't mention RED or other cinema cameras.
I enjoyed this. Nice to hear your opinions. Also... love the little light on the apple logo :) it's the little touches.
Thanks Sam! Aputure MC to the rescue :-)
@@dslrvideoshooter 😂 my pleasure! 🙏🏻 cracking lights. Always look forward to your videos
🌞 Many Thanks, Caleb, and well wishes to you and your family! Excellent content, as always!
Thank you so much SA!
@@dslrvideoshooter Very Welcome, bro! :)
Let's just send this video to all of these companies cause if they make all the changes you mention, I think the world would be a better place.
Phew! Since I am terrible unsecure about my camera choices I was relieved to see Sony rank a "B". Could you please do a special video about the classic A6300 as the unsung hero of APS-C I'd be ever so grateful. :)
(Seriously, a nice take on cameras and brands. Thank you.)
Ha! Glad I could back you up!
I agree with your list, except for Nikon. With the way they are going, I think they should be a C. Sure they're late to the mirrorless party but better late than never. And their autofocus has improved over the last firmware updates (especially the mark 2s)
Thank goodness my self-worth was not damaged by this video! :) Well done, Caleb. Great observations - totally agree.
Thank you Carl! Hope you are well friend :-)
1:06 Pike Drop!
I think whats make a good camera brand is that what they're offering for the price range, in terms of features, lens choice . etc (and i think Panasonic are really good at making budget friendly cam with cool features) 🙌. If they can improve their AF they'll be a tough competitor to other brands.
I love that he pointed to a fantastic idea. BMD should buy sigma or Z cam. Dude I love your savyness. Great work yet again.
I just bought the Pentax K3, I am very happy. (For Stills)
Very concise. Very interesting. Thanks, Caleb. 👍🦘🇦🇺
I've never seen a perfect camera or a perfect videographer (hence the need to aquire more gear) - disclaimers out of the way, everyone has an opinion. The best camera is the one you know how to use and can get the results your after.
Very accurate ranking. I use Panasonic and never use autofocus. I guess I get why it matters to some people though.
I can totally get on board with this ranking. I use Fujifilm and Canon.
This may just be entertainment for some, but for people new to the camera scene like me, this kind of info is incredibly useful!
And if we're going EXTRA hard, those "A" cameras also have to have internal RAW recording and accept standard SSDs as media, like the Ninja V but built in.
I personally don't have autofocus issues with Fuji with 16-55 F2.8 lens, but yeah their other lenses, especially the older primes aren't good for video autofocus.
Happen to agree with all of it. Excellent breakdown Caleb. Thanks for sharing all that you do.
Good morning. I didn't watch thr video yet just came straight to the comments lol.. I used a few canons in the past, never used a Sony but I use a nikon Z6 for filming and for me it meets all my needs.
Balanced, and seeking a better product for users - thank you.
I agree with all of this! Sony surprised me big time with the A74
I have been using an R6 for about a year now, always shooting in 4k25 or 4k50 (except for a couple of times when I needed 100fps) and I have never ever had it overheat.
I love the sound quality of this video .
Caleb: I’m in danger!
Only if that's your middle name.
Fuji also has recording limits. Drives me crazy. Bought a Ninja V just to eliminate some of the issues.
From what I recall that 30 minute limit is a legal/tax thing, where if a camera films under it, it's a photo camera but longer and it's a video camera which adds some sort of hassle enough to warrant it. Rusty on the details, but that's why that exists.
Thanks for the great video, love your view / perspective on this topic, As a suggestion, please introduce this as: Ranking cameras for solo-operators / videographers - I was quite confused at first 😅
Anyone else wanting Caleb to start a podcast?! 🙋🏻♂️
Too much talky talky!
Came for the tier list, stayed for the soothing voice
Hey great video thanks, one question please what camera would you recommend for cooking videos 1080 60fps maybe 120fps for slowmo needs to have good stabilization for handheld shots over food moving and great autofocus so that when moving over different plates it focuses everything as we go over it and not lacking behind making the video unsharp, what are the budget options for this I does not have to be the latest model? thanks
Good video BTW. What I think is missing is a really budget friendly full frame cam that doesn't suck.
Shadows in your background have different direction. I can’t unsee it now.
Shhhhh...
Also, some some affordable RF glass options would be nice!!
Yes!
Oh yes! I would love an a7000 or the next sony apsc with 10-bit.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the XH2S.
I would love a cinema camera from Fuji
I am looking forward to X-H2
Tuesday just became awesome
Nikon "I think they're just floating along with life." LOL
I’m surprised Built in ND is not on the list of features
it finally happened, Lumix got phase detection with the S5II and imo opinion it´s crushing the competition now in every aspect
I agree with the rankings! But the question is where do you now put DJI? The Ronin 4D might be an A camera I think.
I’ve been a Lumix shooter for a while now, and I don’t know if I see myself switching to anything else, despite the subpar autofocus (I prefer to manual focus anyway).
I too love Lumix. AF would be a thicc cherry on top.
Another great video and a great tiered list. I started with Fujifilm and love the colors, but you nailed the fact that the autofocus situation for video is finicky, particularly when you film yourself. I was planning on moving to a Sony system next (when I can afford it), and this is another video that further justifies that future move.
*Camera company engineers sweating profusely*
A zcam blackmagic collab would be epic.
Fuji is what i chose to go with, never look back ever since
why? I love Fuji’s colour science and tactile dials over any touch screen menu tho.
I'd love to see a revised version of this video
You want the small form factor, the overheating is going to come with it. Chips get hot. Better manual fan control would be great in smaller cameras, but I feel what it would take to combat the heating problems would still get criticised. I've owned a Red Scarlet, Epic and Dragon, and while they get criticised for their loud fan, the control options they have for managing the speeds are incredibly useful.
Excellent solutions to bring camera brands to Category A. Manufacturers take note!
Great points, agree completely and I use Panasonic. Personally though I would've put BMD higher as I'm not too bothered about a cinema camera having AF as it's a different workflow + THE PRICE ALONE lmao great video though boss!
