Billy Powell was a classically trained pianist. In 1972, Skynyrd played a show at the Bolles School prom. During a break at that event, Powell sat down at a piano and launched into his piano-based version of "Free Bird". When the band realized their roadie's ability, he was offered the position of keyboardist. Jimmy Johnson, studio guitarist known for being a member of The Swampers, said Billy played his version of Freebird when the band took a lunch break while recording what would become Skynyrds First...and Last. The band returned from lunch to hear Billy playing and a few weeks later he was offered a full position in the band

It’s Honky Tonk piano, combining bits of gospel, stride, blues, ragtime, rock, boogie woogie, swing, and Dixieland jazz. You can always tell a band that made their bones playing bars and dives, like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, the Beatles and Billy Joel did. The skill level is off the charts.

They have such a huge catalog, even though the plane crash happened and Ronnie Van Zant and the rest died young, because there are no throw away songs on their albums. But I would suggest the live version of "Travellin' Man - 1976" because you get to see them all in action, including the "Honkettes", Cassie Gaines, Jojo Billingsley, and Leslie Hawkins, their famous backup singers. Cassie Gaines and her brother, guitarist Steve Gaines, both died in the plane crash.

Amber, it's interesting that you find the piano such an important part of the band. Me too, but what is really interesting about it is the story behind how that happened. The band was on tour and I guess they did have a piano for some of the parts, or maybe it was a multi band venue and there just happened to be a piano there from another performer. While the sound guy was doing some playbacks to adjust the PA system one of the roadies who had some time on his hands sat down at the piano and started jamming along with the Lynyrd Skynyrd tune "Free Bird" that he had messed around with before on his own time and had an arrangement for piano. So he was playing along and was just having a blast and it sounded pretty damn good. Nobody knew this roadie could even play the piano, muchless rock the house with it to one of the bands title songs. Well it turns out that this roadie had studied music and was a seriously gifted pianist. One of the band members, and I believe it was Van Zant (spelling) but I'll check, along with some of my other details and edit in corrections, anyway this band member heard this piano jamming and that was that. The roadie was drafted into the band, and from that day forward he was the Lynyrd Skynyrd pianist. I hope I remembered this story correctly and that it is even in regards to this band, but this is the story I heard, and I'm gonna Google it now to fact check myself, because admittedly it sounds pretty far out. EDIT: It appears I remembered correctly his name was Billy Powell and he was buddies with the Skynyrd Bass Guitar player Leon Wilkeson and got the gig doing roadie work thru him. Also the other band that had the piano was the Southern Rock band "Mountain" . Another version of the story which is probably more accurate says that the band came back into the recording studio from lunch while Powell was playing his arrangement for Freebird, and were amazed and hired him on the spot. My favorite Skynryd song is I Know a Little ... the song is a boogie bop with walking basslines, syncopated drums and the guitar licks and solos throughout are awesome in that jazzy style reminiscent of horns in the swing bands of the forties and early fifties.
btw, that style of piano playing Billy Powell is playing on this song is called honky-tonk.

"What's Your Name" was the first single (released November 1977) from Lynyrd Skynyrd's 5th studio album, "Street Survivors" (released 17 Oct 1977). The song reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Tuesday's Gone is a fantastic song by them that has a bit of a more mellow sound.

The group only had 3 years together before the plane crash. Wish we could have had them longer

70s girls never thought there was a shame. Lol. Skynyrd and Allman Brothers are the two best ever.

I live in Jacksonville Florida where they came from. I can see this being a dominant form of music back then. Can't get much more Southern than here.

This song is a sorta-true story about the band being on tour and partying too hard in the hotel bar, and getting thrown out. Whatever "her" name was, Ronnie hopes he sees her when they play Boise again on the next tour.
If you want to hear Billy Powell - Skynyrd's late, great pianner player - REALLY showing out, dig "I Know A Little" or "Call Me The Breeze."

This is such a great song. This has always been one of my favorites. It reminds me of leaving high school on a Friday afternoon and getting ready to go cruisin!

The opening line about it being 8 o’clock in Boise Idaho is tribute to Ronnie Van Zant’s brother Donnie’s band 38 Special who was about to start his own band’s journey with their first show in Boise.

This song was a huge hit that came out right around the time of the plane crash that killed most of the band. Their plane crash rocked the music world, it was such a tragedy. 😞

SKYNYRD is my favorite band. I love ALL their songs but when I need a kick in the a$$ to get me up:
    "Gimme Back My Bullets"
    "Working For MCA"
    "Whiskey Rock -A-Roller"
    "I Know A Little"
    are my go to's.

They recorded some of their music at Muscle Shoals, Alabama and it was known for the "Muscle Shoals Sound." Many famous artists recorded there and so did Skynyrd. This song has that feel to it and was very popular at the time.

Keyboardist Billy Powell was actually a trained pianist. The guys in the band heard him noodling around on the piano during a break at a show and were impressed enough to hire him. (He got her name. He was just too stoned to remember it the next day! LOL). Love the reaction .

That piano you hear was a road crew guy, not a band member. When he played with them he was an instant member of the band.

LS is so rare in that you are guaranteed an autobiographical story in every song.
