This song is the subject of one of my proud momma moments! When my daughter was around 13, about 20 years ago, her dad got her a cell phone. This was before every child was given a phone. I heard it ring, and she had "Layla" set as her ringtone. So, I just asked her what it was. She sighed, which was clearly the indication that she was about to "school" her uncool mom! She says, "Mom! The song is called Layla and it's by Derek and the Dominoes, but, the singer is Eric Clapton!" I just respond with, "You don't say!" I then turn around and silently scream, "YES!! That's my girl!"

I usually explain ... This is Eric Clapton's band, AFTER The Yardbirds, Cream and Blind Faith. Many of his friends and fellow musicians kept pushing and prodding him to sing but he was not very sure of himself. So, he put together Derek & The Dominos. He figured, he'd try it out, and if it bombed (or like Led Zeppelin said about themselves at first, "went over like a Led Zeppelin/balloon"), no one would be the wiser, since it didn't have his name on it. Turns out, it was the best move he made in his career, as this is his #1 best/most famous song. Soooooo, long story short (I know, too late) ... This IS MR ERIC CLAPTON behind that guitar AND microphone.
The slide guitar is played by none other than Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers !!! You MUST react to them and, that is 1 band that does some great live versions. I would try out Whipping Post as your 1st listen (Live at Fillmore East version), One Way Out (Eat A Peach album), Jessica (Brothers and Sisters album), In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed (Fillmore East), Stormy Monday (Fillmore East) and definitely Ramblin' Man and Midnight Rider. Then , branch out from there, cause there's a WHOLE LOT more great songs by this group.

He was great friends with Jimmy Hendrix. One of his nicknames was old slow hands on account he appeared to play slow but was actually playing fast. He wrote one of the most heartbreaking songs of all time about the death of his infant son who fell to his death from a multi story building after he fell out of a window. Tears in heaven. Most of his thing is sixties blues based rock. He played in the band cream.

Sorry mate but that's completely wrong, his nickname was 'slow hand ' not old slowhands and he was given it by Giorgio Golmenski (club promoter) because when he was playing with the yardbirds he would sometimes be playing furiously and break a string ,so he would fix his strings on stage and the audience would start a slow hand clap while he was doing this.

One of Clapton's best guitar solos can be heard in the song Crossroads by Cream. And yes, Layla was written for Pattie Harrison while she was married to George, Eric's best friend. Eventually, Eric married Pattie & wrote another beautiful song for her called Wonderful Tonight. Another stellar performance by Eric Clapton can be found in the performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the Concert For George, an all-star tribute to George Harrison shortly after his death.

    From wikipedia
Patricia Anne Boyd (born 17 March 1944) is an English model and photographer. She was one of the leading international models during the 1960s and, with Jean Shrimpton, epitomised the British female look of the era. Boyd married George Harrison in 1966 and experienced the height of the Beatles' popularity as well as sharing in their embrace of Indian spirituality. She divorced Harrison in 1977 and married Harrison's friend Eric Clapton in 1979; they divorced in 1989. Boyd inspired Harrison's songs "If I Needed Someone", "Something" and "For You Blue", and Clapton's songs "Layla", "Bell Bottom Blues" and "Wonderful Tonight".

Lots to love here. The Song is best enjoyed when you listened to the entire double album. Slap on the headphones, lights out, lay back, listen. Duane Allman and Clapton share duties. Most of the slide guitar you hear is Allman.
Clapton's relationship with Allman is a pretty interesting story. Matter of fact, a great book would be an analysis of Clapton's relationship/friendships with George Harrison, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Winwood, and Duane Allman. All great players, all had an interesting role in Clapton's life.
As for more of Clapton's music: it starts with the Yardbirds, then I would jump to Cream...plenty of great Cream tunes. My favorite is Badge. You can locate Cream's popular songs, but I would go for Deserted Cities of the Heart. Check out Blind Faith, where Clapton hooks up with Steve Winwood. Lastly, Clapton's solo stuff from the mid-70s to late-80s is fantastic. "I Can't Stand It" is terrific.

Eric Clapton singing and playing guitar, and he wrote the song. About George Harrison's wife, Patti Boyd, with whom he was infatuated. She eventually left George for Eric, and he wrote You Look Wonderful Tonight about her, as well. Clapton is THE guitar god. His acoustic version of this song from MTV's Unplugged is amazing. As a teen he fell in love with American blues music, and it has been a heavy influence on all his music. Huge catalog, with Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, and tons of solo work.

The Persian love story of Layla and Majnun is reflected in Clapton's lyrics about his love for Pattie Boyd. A favorite of mine since the 1970s

They all studied blues music of muddy waters, Robert Johnson, tbone walker, bb king and other black artist and put their own spin on it. Duane was a studio musician in Macon Georgia. So yeah they've got soul.

Eric Clapton was the first concert I ever attended, in 1977 I think. This was right after the release of his Slow Hand album. My favorite from that album, though rarely heard on the radio, is The Core!!!

Most people don't realize it but this album has many roots in the South and was recorded at the legendary Criterion Studios in Miami.. Bobby Whitlock, from Memphis, met Eric and Duane in the studio at Muscle Shoals AL, and then when Eric temporarily joined up with Delaney, Bonnie and friends, a band from Mississippi, on tour of which Bobby was the keyboard player. When the tour was over, Bobby went with Eric to Eric's mansion in Surrey, England. There, the two of them wrote all the songs on this album, with Eric insisting on him getting one more song on this album than Bobby. One of Bobby's best songs on this album is "Anyday", been covered by several bands over the years including Derek Trucks, speaking of the South. That's Bobby singing on the original. Eric met Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett in Muscle Shoals, AL in a studio.

Eric Clapton (Slowhand) is singing and playing lead guitar. Duane Allman (Skydog) is playing the slide guitar. Bobby Whitlock is singing background and he probably taught Eric how to sing soulfully.

Eric is singing lead. As has already been mentioned Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers band is playing the second lead guitar. That's him doing slide.
Eric Clapton and Duane Allman were each other's biggest fans. There are several other songs on the album with Eric and Duane jamming along.
If you haven't already, check out the Allman Brothers band. Their live Fillmore East album is awesome in the extreme and in the Library of Congress. Check out Tied To The Whipping Post from that album and Soulshine from the Where It All Begins album.
Also, I'd highly recommend checking out Humble Pie's 1973 performance of Black Coffee at The Old Grey Whistle Test studio.

Three of the greatest love songs ever made were recorded were written for the same woman, Pattie Boyd. George Harrison, "Something" and Erick Clapton," Layla". Clapton also wrote, "Wonderful Tonight" for Boyd.None other than Frank Sinatra ( the King of love songs) said Layla was one of the greatest love songs of all time, and loved to perform it-always introducing it as such and thanking George.

Eric Clapton sings. He's got a huge history of songs & bands that he was in . Like " CREAM " for one . He also played with many musicians . He also played with Hendrix , Santana , B. B. King , Freddy King , Albert King , SRV just to name a few. But if you really want to experience him , look for him playing LIVE . It's said that this is the ultimate love song.
