Lex hits the nail right on the head. Lynyrd Skynyrd created an amazing body of work considering the short time they had together with Ronnie at the helm. Many bands who are still together today from that time period can't match what Lynyrd Skynyrd left behind for the masses. The band was able to continue on years later with his younger brother Johnny singing lead (who looks and sounds so much like Ronnie), and bringing in other musicians and backup singers to stand in for those who were lost in that terrible plane crash. It will never be the same without those who died that day, and those band members who have died since then, but it is an amazing tribute to the legacy of their music.
100% true, but let's not forget Ronnie, Gary, and Allen had been playing together since they were teenagers, and that's one of the reasons their sound was so tight.
The most memorable lineup of this band only lasted 4 years. Amazing what they did in that short amount of time. This album was released only 3 days before the plane crash that killed so many people, Including Ronnie Van Zant
No idea what you are calling the most memorable lineup and 4 years? They formed in 68…….many lineup changes on their early classics with drummer Bob Burns gone after Second Helping and guitarist Ed King gone after Nothing Fancy. If you are referring to this album with Steve Gaines…he was in the band for about a year and played on this album and the live album One From The Road
Yes the original drummer for the band was a good friend of mine all the way back to around 78 when I first met him and he has told me stories about him and Ronnie all the time getting into fights even when they were doing gigs and they were backstage and they would get in to a fight about something and when the rest of the band would say ok it's time for us to go out they would get up and dust off and just go out and jam just like nothing happened
@flyingburritobro68 A). I said the most "memorable lineup," Which spans 1973 to 1977.. I didn't say the ORIGINAL lineup , Because the drummer Bob Burns left the band and was replaced by Artemis Pyle, and Ed KIng was replaced with Steve Gaines. That period was the most memorable. B). No one outside of Jacksonville remembers Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1968 to 1973 because they didn't put out any recordings. The world 1st learned about the band with their 1st album, pronounced. It's really not all that difficult to understand.
It does make you wonder how they could make such great music in a such a short time when other bands struggle to get one top song. I guess that is a sign of great band.
bands that play together for a while, writing and playing shows, before they record can produce a great album. it's a band's SECOND album, after they've used their best songs on their 1st album, that is the measure of a band. it's so common for the second album not to measure up, there's a name for it... "the sophomore jinx"
They started out around 69 as the 1% -so yes kinda short compared to other infamous bands personally now days the closest to get near their sound to me is Blackberry Smoke !
They were a good southern rock band that peaked during the '70s. Along with many other southern rock bands. , which was big during the '70s and '80s. They were southern rock, bluesy rock band. They would have had a longer career, but the plane crash messed the band up. Very sad. Some had died (RIP) and others seriously injured.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was so great...would love to see you react to more! Try I know a Little, Call Me the Breeze and On the Hunt to start. They have so many good tunes, and yes for an original band not together for very long. At 15 my older brothers brought me to their Oakland concert on their last tour before the plane crash. We were about 40 feet from the stage. I still remember it so well...Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. What a great show that was. I was such a Skynyrd head in high school and so crushed after the plane crash. Thanks for your reactions and can't wait to see your new baby! 🙂
Skynyrd had a knack of writing rocking boogie woogie blues based songs... they wrote many classics that sound as good today as back in the day. I think the original band are all deceased except Artimus Pyle(Drums) and Gary Rossington(Guitar)... RIP to all the fallen band members.
Skynyrd was the ultimate garage band. Started out practicing in the car port of one of the members mothers house. Played local gigs and eventually started opening for major groups like The Who and The Rolling Stones. Most of their hits were created in a small metal sided cabin next to a river with no AC in northern Florida. The hell house is what they called it.
This was their last album and their first with guitarist Steve Gains. Steve was the catalyst for the sound of this album. You are correct it does sound a little bit different. Steve Gains is the reason why.
@4:20 Yes Brad - when a band goes on a tour, they usually don't come back to the same city on the same tour - so next year - looking ahead to the next tour. A couple more great songs with this same sound: "Gimme Three Steps" "That Smell" (which you already did, and Lex mentioned it).
The song is about meeting girls on tour. Back in the day, bands used to tour cities once a year, which explains "When I come back here next year, I want to see you again" Love you guys!! Keep that classic ROCK-N-ROLL coming!!
You are so right Lex, every time Skynyrd dropped an album back in the 70’s, we couldn’t get to the record store fast enough to drop it on our turn tables 😎
Purple Rain Tour - Little Nikki - Wow! Best concert I ever saw and I'd seen a ton of concerts in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Lynyrd Skynyrd is one I missed, sadly. Did see Stevie Ray Vaughn before he died though the night before we got married at The Aragon in Chicago.
A lot of bands including Lynyrd Skynyrd had formed years before they even released their first album. They formed in 1964 under the name My Back Yard. So they are not short lived as you think. Even though the original lineup stopped performing after the crash killed killed three members Van Zant,Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines, since 1987 they have been performing
Skynyrd definitely was one of the top southern rock bands of all time, but what a lot of people don't realize is the Van Zant Brothers (Ronnie, Donnie and Johnny) were/are some of the best, and most innovative southern rockers of history. Ronnie was the lead singer for Skynyrd, Donnie was one of the leads for 38 Special, and Johnny started being the lead for Skynyrd after the tragic wreck. Not to mention most of the southern rock bands were well known to each other. And there's also a band called Van Zant.
This album street survivors. Was there first stereo sounding album. Well produced. And the last Ronnie VanZant , Steve Gaines and Crissy Gaines would perform on. The drummer survived but called it quits after the plane crash.
It was wild that street survivors was the album they were going on tour was the one they had the plane crash. I'm a huge skynyrd fan I honestly think that they were just getting started. I've seen them numerous times.
I still think it's eerie that the cover of Street Survivors showed the band surrounded by flames. Yikes. In an odd but true bit of trivia the Who had an album at the same time, Who Are You, in which Keith Moon, who would die shortly after its release, was pictured on the cover sitting on a chair that said Not To Be Taken Away. Further the big hit off this was Who Are You and on Skynyrd's it was What's Your Name. I don't know about anybody else, but I find that spooky.
@@RicoBurghFan that's very true and very eerie. Also you figure "That Smell" hinted at how much partying was taking place. I honestly think had they not had the crash so early in their lives that they would have been even bigger then they are now. I have the street survivors cd with the original cover art. I want to try and find the vinyl of the original.
Great insight Lex. They did put out a lot of great music in a short matter of time with the original members. They continued on and did very well, but imagine if the accident had not happened..Then try to imagine how many more great songs they may have released..
There are so many songs by L.S. but one thing you absolutely have to know is... "the ballad of Curtis Low" ! One of my favorite songs from L.S. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
In that day and age it was common for bands to write music for a new album while touring in support of a recently released album. So, a lot of songs were inspired from the road. This is one of them. They're moving from town to town touring and grabbing a new girl in each town. `What was your name?`
Skynyrd had so many songs that had different sounds to them. They could be straight up Rock, Blues or anything in between! All of them were amazing! R.I.P. to the original band!
This hit brings back many high school memories. This song was around the same time or released shortly after the fatal crash. I will never forget leaving football practice and later that night, Walter Cronkite informed America about the plane crash. Many were shocked and sad! I often wonder which of the Lynrd Skynyrd bands was the best?
He hooked up with a groupie, and he's saying he wants to look her up when they're back on tour next year (could be a line, though, who knows if they'll be going through her town again next year)! Also, the band got banned from the bar b/c one of the crew got in a fight (had a go) with another of the hotel's guests.
This was a band that together they were like a family after the same outcome , the songs were about places they had been and some of their experiences .
Yeah, but like most bands management cheated them out of their earnings while the record companies cheated them out of standing on the lists hence the song "Gimme Back My Bullets" and "Working for MCA"
This song was released as a single a month after Skynyrd’s plane crash on Oct. 17, 1977. Ronnie Van Zant (the singer) was killed, along with Steve and Cassie Gaines, an assistant road manager, and both pilots. Steve was a phenomenal guitarist who’d just joined the group. Cassie, his sister, was a background singer. 😞
Brad & Lex, if you do any movie reactions, perhaps the first one should be "Almost Famous" for a little insight to the rock star life on the road. Good point by Lex on the brief life of original Skynyrd as a band. In fact, the Southern Rock genre in general disappeared rather suddenly. But the music lives on.
One of my all time favorite movies!! Basically an autobiography of Cameron Crowe's life, starting out as a teen rock writer at Rolling Stone, going on to be a very successful film director. The music in it is amazing.
Not only am I amazed by how many "radio hits" they had but by ALL of the deeper "album cuts" that could have been on the radio. No filler just great tunes! This goes for most of the bands from this era like, "JOURNEY" "EDDIE MONEY" "BILLY SQUIRE" "FREE" "BAD COMPANY" to name a few. I always wondered how/why certain songs were picked and released as singles from an album. You would think that after putting that much time in to create the music that they would release EVERY song to see how well it does. "BOSTON" comes to mind as far as almost every song being a single.
That's where makes the Beatles so unique they actually were together as a group only about 10 years the evolved and change their style from what they started out to be too what they ended up being not every band can do that especially changing musical styles and experimenting and still put out Quality Music
Brad these songs are on Albums. When this was released we had two options, Listen to what the Radio played for us, and our own Turntables (Record player) at home. We would listen to a whole album to hear the bands sound, and we had become familiar with them. Your learning about bands from multiple decades and genera all at the same time. In the OLD DAYS, you had made a choice to music styles you liked. Country, R & B, Pop, (popular) Soft Rock, Rock, Hard Rock. You would only be listening to that one or two types that appealed to your senses. I can understand your comments based on your Music schooling. I am happy to see how you evolved during the past two years. Lemon head would also be proud that you mentioned ZEP's sound.
I don't really get it brother I'm a little bit confused Hale? A traveling man you are to think that would have been a better hit traveling man is completely awesome traveling man of course it's Leonard scannered
Its like Lex was born for this stuff lol. She nails it pretty much all the time now. I love watching your reactions to the better bands, the ones that stood out and became instant legends. That's when you guys shine the most!😊
We are lucky enough that they put out several albums before the plane crash which ended it all. Such a rich catalog but it's all over the map and they definitely had their own recognizable sound. I haven't heard a Lynyrd Skynyrd song I don't like but they definitely have a whole lot of masterpieces. Lex, you mentioned the song, That Smell, which is amazing, and it's off their final album right before the plane crash, Street Survivors. Like most of their albums, everything on that is fire. But if you really want to be blown away and see that they actually do have a lot of Blues in them, check out the song from that album, Honky Tonk Night Time Man. I absolutely promise both of you will be blown away.
Some bands wrote a lot of songs early on and had them in the bank so to speak, ready for the next album... some are just very prolific Alan buddy holly they get in a grove and keep ...going.
Traveling man Ah d*** now that's so Leonard Skinner from the beginning middle and end all about it traveling man yeah that's all about it Leonard scannered traveling mansus
And just think they were turned down by every major label, when Al Kooper heard them in a bar he liked them so much he went and started the label Songs of the South
This song is from the album, "Street Survivors", I believe it is their best (and most full bodied) work. "That Smell" is also on this album. Pick any song from "Street Survivors" and its a banger. Go ahead give it a try. You won't be disappointed. Thanks and I love you guys!!!
Skynyrd has a sound....every single song of theirs sounds like them and no one else. Ronnie's voice was perfect. It's true though, how did they write so many memorable songs in such a short time
Check out" Feebird the movie " & "Gone with the wind the rise and fall of Lynyrd Skynyrd " any by all means the Lynyrd Skynyrd Pepsi commercial. Have yall listen to TUESDAY'S GONE. PLEASE DO
I don’t think it’s amazing that they put out so much great music in a short span. Many great bands/artists do that. I think what we we react to when a band or artist dies young is wondering what could have been if they had survived.
It seems that the prime of most great bands is only about 4 or 5 years. Even personal relationships when the spark goes so goes the creativity. Bands like the Rolling Stones and Metallica are definitely the exception to the rule.
What a phenomenal band and a crying shame it all ended so prematurely. Imagine how much amazing content the world was deprived of after that plane went down.
It’s true of Skynyrd yeah, but think of the Beatles: they recorded for just six years, 10 studio albums I think (not counting things like Help or Magical Mystery Tour), and good god how many hits and otherwise complete bangers? Not trying to put down Skynyrd at all, love em-it really was amazing for them to come up with all their hits…and then you realize how crazy what the Beatles did, really was.
Lex hits the nail right on the head. Lynyrd Skynyrd created an amazing body of work considering the short time they had together with Ronnie at the helm. Many bands who are still together today from that time period can't match what Lynyrd Skynyrd left behind for the masses. Yes, this was from before the accident and yes, they have a huge rabbit hole of hits. Saturday Night Special and Gimme Three Steps are both bangers
@The_Brad_Lex. Hello. What do you want to discuss?
This album was released exactly 3 Days post crash in 77 !
They’re a very versatile band, with many sounds. They’re Rock. They’re Blues. They’re Country. They’re Southern Rock.
THERE SOUND IS SOUTHERN ROCK - ROCK, COUNTRY, BLUES ALL MIXED TOGETHER !!!!
It does make you wonder how they could make such great music in a such a short time when other bands struggle to get one top song. I guess that is a sign of great band.

Spot on Lex with your comments. I was a junior in high school when the accident happened. Our class song was Freebird. Love the reaction guys!
Just an absolute beast of a band. I never get tired of Skynyrd, ever!
Still don't my home town crew along with the Allman Bros,Blackfoot Molly hatchet and I could go on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
They were a good southern rock band that peaked during the '70s. Along with many other southern rock bands. , which was big during the '70s and '80s.

Not exactly sure which brother was the lead singer for the group 38 Special!! Check out some of this great bands music too!!
Yup... Florida 👍 They went to high school in Jacksonville 👍❤️

"Next year" is because this song is about being on tour with the band and on the road for a long time.
Skynyrd had a knack of writing rocking boogie woogie blues based songs... they wrote many classics that sound as good today as back in the day. I think the original band are all deceased except Artimus Pyle(Drums) and Gary Rossington(Guitar)... RIP to all the fallen band members.
This song was a shout out to all the groupies
ya, next year, they are on tour. Their sound progressed to the point of musical maturity while still maintaining the southern kick ass a-purity!
Half of the Band died in the plane crash flying to do another concert. Sounds like "The Buddy Holly Story" all over again. Great Band.
They were shooting into the stratosphere with a new live album filmed New Years Eve in Atl... and then they were gone.
As an Idaho resident, this is one of my favorites:)
Traveling man traveling man that's the song it's Leonard Skinner add it up break down on Leonard Skinner pretty good
Then you got searching searching by Leonard Skinner it's a pretty good break down there
And then of course you got that right you got that right yes that's the song and it is Leonard skinnard you got that right you got that right
Bands like Skynyrd are like meteors that blaze for an instant but leave glowing trails that we can still look at and appreciate.
CCR made 7 albums from 68'-72' sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle.
Also they were just really really good!
This is the album they were touring for when crash happened this was on street survivors released 77 same as crash
The song is about meeting girls on tour.
Back in the day, bands used to tour cities once a year, which explains
"When I come back here next year, I want to see you again"
Love you guys!! Keep that classic ROCK-N-ROLL coming!!
You are so right Lex, every time Skynyrd dropped an album back in the 70’s, we couldn’t get to the record store fast enough to drop it on our turn tables 😎

The band CCR was only together for a few short years, but produced a lot of hits. They actually have the most number two hits of any other band. .o0
Which makes the fact that the Beatles did what they did in less then nine years so amazing!
The huge majority of what they wrote was from 63 to 69, just 6 years
A lot of bands including Lynyrd Skynyrd had formed years before they even released their first album. They formed in 1964 under the name My Back Yard. So they are not short lived as you think. Skynyrd definitely was one of the top southern rock bands of all time, but what a lot of people don't realize is the Van Zant Brothers (Ronnie, Donnie and Johnny) were/are some of the best, and most innovative southern rockers of history. The Lynyrd Skynyrd's most recognizable sound is only one and always the same: the best.
Check out Needle and the Spoon or Ooh that Smell or Tuesdays Gone or Gimme Three Steps.
People will be listening to Lynard Skynard until the world is gone 🌎 Legendary music NEVER goes out of style.
There are so many songs by L.S. but one thing you absolutely have to know is... "the ballad of Curtis Low" ! One of my favorite songs from L.S. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)
The bangers come out young and fast.
In that day and age it was common for bands to write music for a new album while touring in support of a recently released album. So, a lot of songs were inspired from the road. This is one of them. They're moving from town to town touring and grabbing a new girl in each town. `What was your name?`
Thank you for this reaction...This is may favorite Skynyrd song.
Skynyrd had so many songs that had different sounds to them. They could be straight up Rock, Blues or anything in between! All of them were amazing! R.I.P. to the original band!
Man I love 70's Lynyrd Skynyrd...so cool so rock, so blues. Something about Ronnie Van Zant's voice just is amazing.
Love Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music at least a couple of times a week to this very day!
Bands used to keep the same road schedule every year, unless they don't have a new album to promote. The road was their big money maker.
This hit brings back many high school memories. This song was around the same time or released shortly after the fatal crash. I will never forget leaving football practice and later that night, Walter Cronkite informed America about the plane crash. Many were shocked and sad! Prior to the plans crash, everything they touched turned to gold. Such an immense talent.
Yeah, but like most bands management cheated them out of their earnings while the record companies cheated them out of standing on the lists hence the song "Gimme Back My Bullets" and "Working for MCA"
Love when the guitar solo starts, Lex starts to glow ..... priceless.
They from Jacksonville baby. Y'all outta check out early Skynyrd.."Skynyrd first and last" there are even some demos on it
You've only scratched the surface of their catalog so much great music 🤘♥️
Robin wife here. Another different Skynyrd one is I never Dreamed . Give a listen it’s not one of their top hits but a good one.
Call me the breeze. Should listen.
Edit: The album was released on Oct. 17. The plane crash occurred on Oct. 20.
Lex is so spot on with her thought that this band was so hot right from the start.
Great movie!
One of my all time favorite movies!! Basically an autobiography of Cameron Crowe's life, starting out as a teen rock writer at Rolling Stone, going on to be a very successful film director. The music in it is amazing.
Yes, next year when their band comes back to town to do their next concert.
Lol
Awesome observation Lex, they definitely were hit makers.
Not only am I amazed by how many "radio hits" they had but by ALL of the deeper "album cuts" that could have been on the radio. No filler just great tunes!

I think the song traveling man traveling man I think that breaks down Leonard Skinner pretty well
Back in my day we used to play searching searching by Leonard Skinner that's a d*** good song they're searching
I'm wondering how many peoples I've ever even heard of 4 walls afore was a rayford?
And Taylor Texas and a Taylor Tennessee that's a d*** kick a** rock and roll there when it's dinner doing it
The songs Gimme Back My Bullets & Double Trouble are typical of their sound.
Lex is a charm. You have to like the Blues to appreciate their music
Another classic that still gets played on stage every time we do a gig. Hey its Lynard Skynard!! People love em and so do I. 🤟🤟⚘⚘⚘
Lynyrd Skynyrd no "A"in the name
Ronnie’s singing, the guitar’s and piano are a dead giveaway on any of their songs!

Hop to it! Get on more skynyrd!
Mr Banker
Ballad of Curtis Lowe
Some bands wrote a lot of songs early on and had them in the bank so to speak, ready for the next album... some are just very prolific Alan buddy holly they get in a grove and keep ...going.
Listen to them all. The sound is called ROCK N ROLL
Many more Skynyrd songs to get to, 'don't ask me no questions', 'I know a little' 'you got that right', just to name a few.
I Love Country Music 🇺🇸👢👢
Had a friend she was a groupie she got us into a lot of shows and backstage parties ahhh the 70's
Their last album showed they were just getting better and better ("What's Your Name", "Give Me Three Steps"..)
I think that Brad and Lex would be awesome at movie reactions!

Iconic.❤❤ Check out Gimme three Steps.
It doesn't matter which song of Skynyrd you listen to your gonna like it they are all great only group to ever have all there songs be good
There are so many Skynyrd tunes that are amazing you could react to them daily for a month!
And just think they were turned down by every major label, when Al Kooper heard them in a bar he liked them so much he went and started the label Songs of the South
There’s no one like Skynard! My personal favorite is a little ditty called I Know A Little!
Love the horns in this song
This song is from the album, "Street Survivors", I believe it is their best (and most full bodied) work. "That Smell" is also on this album. Pick any song from "Street Survivors" and its a banger. Go ahead give it a try. You won't be disappointed. Thanks and I love you guys!!!
Skynyrd has a sound....every single song of theirs sounds like them and no one else. Ronnie's voice was perfect. It's true though, how did they write so many memorable songs in such a short time
You two have to do the song I Need You. One of the best heavier love song/ballads you’ll ever hear.
Out of all their song/hits I think ''Gimme three steps'' sounds alot like this! Great reaction y'all!
Check out" Feebird the movie " & "Gone with the wind the rise and fall of Lynyrd Skynyrd " any by all means the Lynyrd Skynyrd Pepsi commercial. Have yall listen to TUESDAY'S GONE. PLEASE DO
I guess the best category for Skynard is Southern Boogie.
I don’t think it’s amazing that they put out so much great music in a short span. Many great bands/artists do that. I think what we we react to when a band or artist dies young is wondering what could have been if they had survived.
I always liked the way the Skynyrd sound.was.starting.to change. It had a lot to do with Steve Gaines joining the band. Fantastic Street Survivors.
I Need You & T for Texas.
You guys should review Allen Stone Unaware Live from his mothers living room
To put things in perspective, The Beatles were around for less than 10 years. And look at their collective contribution to music.
