- These 4 exercises can help you prevent arthritis...
And they likely are 4 you aren't including right now. As a physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist, Dr. Alyssa commonly sees people neglecting these 4 exercises that are extremely important in keeping your joints healthy and strong. The most important aspects of arthritis prevention include single leg strength, core control, balance and full body coordination- all of which are discussed here using 4 simple movements.
In addition to movement, preventing arthritis can be possible with prioritizing sleep, managing stress, and focusing on the foods you are fueling your body with. All of these lifestyle habits can help to keep inflammation down which can help to keep your joints healthy. Consistent and balanced movement focusing on the right areas can be a huge help to inflammation reduction too.
The more you know, the more you can work towards prevention. These habits may not 100% prevent the condition but they can make a big difference in your perception of the condition and the symptoms you feel.
Just because you have arthritis does not mean you've failed. Sometimes, no matter what you do, it may still occur. Just remember, there is hope even if you have arthritis.

I Have been practising many of your exercises and I will try to incorporate these exercises in my daily routine. I have arthritis in nearly all my joints... and a totally replaced knee, but try to exercise without too much pain. I also practise swimming (I love it and am quite good at it) but not for too long at a time, not to get in too much pain afterwards.
You're so welcome!
I'm looking forward to incorporating these exercises into my resistance training. I had mild right knee pain that disappeared after I started doing squats 4x/week. It's amazing what exercise can do. 😊

Wish I knew these thing when I was younger. The artheritas is so painful
There is hope with arthritis too!
Alyssa, can I do these exercises if apart from having arthritis I have patella chondromalacia stage 3?
I fractured L2 5 weeks ago. I was doing planks, but not sure if I should now.
Hi,
I have osteoarthritis only in my left knee due to a skiing accident when I was 21. I am now 68 and working out on a NuStep machine. Does it matter if my knee goes around like on a bike or up and down like the NuStep. I go to the Ymca so they have both. Thanks
Variety can be superior so mixing it up can be beneficial as long as you don’t experience any pain while doing it or after. Mixing in some resistance training can also be helpful.
Is this exercise apply to old age?
I will start this today (already have arthritis in knees). Hips are painful all night. Maybe this will help. I will follow your lunge style (knees bent?) I ruptured my Achilles with a lung in the middle of Zumba 7 years ago. I think the leg was straight. Been afraid of lunges since. Do you do personal training?
