FLOAT FISHING FOR PIKE

  • You join me on a large Lea Valley lake float fishing for Pike using deadbait. Pike fishing with floats is one of the most effective ways to catch more Pike. During this crazy session I catch several nice fish float ledgering and drift float fishing. There's a bug advantage to being able to drift and move floats around the swim quickly and easily. The float also offers very little resistance when the bait is picked up, something that is really important when Pike fishing.

    7 months late to this video but I must say, every single video is very professional, easy to follow, relaxing and very informative. You NEED to have your own TV programme. Reminds me almost like Matt Hayes. Your videos leave me just as excited to go on a session than his do. Thanks.

    Another really good watch Nick, loved it! Seemed to be one of those sessions where you just don’t want to go home !
    I much prefer float fishing for pike, it’s such an active searching method more akin to hunting than trapping. The only thing I would say to any novices watching ( assuming 2 rods are used) is to make sure both floats are visible at all times and preferably (unless drifting) use an alarm as a back up - just in case.
    Incidentally, it’s strange that when the 4 rod allowance came about I thought it would up my catch rate significantly especially on big waters but in reality nothing was further from the truth. The use of 3 or 4 rods simply made me lazy, less mobile or inclined to move onto fish (of all species)
    Having watched decent match anglers I’ve gone full circle and now rarely use more than two rods by choice again much preferring to really work at my fishing and baiting techniques to find and hold fish. Admittedly I rarely fish long sessions now but I certainly don’t think my catches have diminished.
    Anyway keep em coming Nick, your enthusiasm is infectious mate - how about a big Lea chub or barbel session before the end of the season?
    All the best.

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! I much prefer floats. There’s something about seeing a float slide away. And like you say, it’s more active and just feels like you’re actively searching. I couldn’t imagine trying to fish the way I do with 4 rods 😂 It would be a nightmare! I’ve been trying to combat this coloured flood water with bright, rattling crankbaits and had a nice chub the other day .... so watch this space! 😉👍🎣

    • @jangojango4823
      @jangojango4823 4 роки тому

      Sounds interesting! I’ll look forward to that!
      Yep, I agree entirely, 4, or even 3 rods can be an absolute nightmare; Manageable ( just about!) on big barren pits and reservoirs where you can hit a fish and walk down the bank to avoid the other rods but generally more of a hindrance. Most times only two rods are in the baited area anyway whilst the others tend to be ‘rovers’ - logic now tells me to properly concentrate on the prepared, baited area and get the best out of it.
      Or, better still, if time is limited, adapt the approach completely, ditch the bivvy and be mobile with minimal gear - float fishing, rolling/trundling, baiting a few spots and stalking, leapfrogging swims and, as you have clearly demonstrated , lure fishing, produce plenty of fish ( especially on the rivers).
      Sorry I always waffle on too much..... enjoy the last few days of the river season.
      All the best.

    Hi. When you fish under depth. How big is the weight in comparison to the float please? For example. If I use a 25g Float and match that with a 25g weight will it be perfect or far too heavy and pull the float under? Thanks

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  2 роки тому

      Yeah, that should balance ok. How do you get on fishing on the drift? I do tend to get more off the deck.

    • @garethnicholson2434
      @garethnicholson2434 2 роки тому

      @@Lifeonthebank Honestly I have not tried that method yet. Always ledger a deadbait on the bottom using the Pike stem kit. As I fish with two/three rods I wanted to start trying something different on one of my rods. I was concerned that I got too heavy a weight to cock the float. I'm pretty sure it would be fine if was still fishing it on the bottom but I'm hoping to suspend the bait at different depths. I guess I will see what it looks like when I test it out next weekend. But I'm glad you seem to think it will be ok.

      Alex Page when the fish is dead the pike will take it from the fron because it’s easier to eat. With a live bait you’d do it the way you’ve mentioned so they can use their tail to swim about

      I use it all the time , for pike , the clutch or drag is usually set full on to enable the hook set . You then have to fart about easing the clutch out if the fish starts to run , switching on the back wind allows for finite control . I find it useful if the fish makes a last minute lunge coming to the net , or jumps/tailwalks . As Mr Speedo said , it offers more refinement/control .

    Cracking video, lots of very good info.
    One criticism though. At 17:40, you hold both pike by their jaws only. You never see any other specimen fish held this way. It's not handle, please support the fish with two hands even if a two fish photo is in the offing.

    Just wondering, if your weight is on the bottom, why you use the float at all? I sometimes do that if its extremely windy, but I mostly suspend my bait and let the float drift to cover more water. In warmer water I've also had good luck working the rig like a very slow jerk bait, and splashing the bobber around like a topwater to attract attention... it works but especially in dirty water they will sometimes go after the float. Most of my pike floats have some battle scars before too long lol.

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  Рік тому

      I don’t seem to do as well drifting. Do you find it more effective? Yes, you could ask why not just ledger but I still like to watch a float come to life! There’s something about it!

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 Рік тому

      @@Lifeonthebank I do better drifting, and usually work my bait for even more action. Our open water season opens in May though, and within a couple weeks pike usually start hitting lures better than bait. Even in the winter, fishing through the ice, a jigged bait almost always out fishes a stationary one in my area.

    Got these thinking they were the slightly larger Panfish floats ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU they work just fine. The smaller size lets me carry more in my tackle box, and the 3 color choices are nice for different lighting conditions, backgrounds, etc. They aren't the most durable things in the world. But, as cheap as they are, it's not heartbreaking to lose one or have to replace a worn one. The price on these fluctuates wildly, from about $9 to almost $16. So, time your buy accordingly.

    Why dont you use the drag of the reel?

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 роки тому +1

      Snoekverslaafde thats a very good question! With pike I want to quite firmly set the hooks and don’t want the drag to activate until that happens. On these particular reels I have found that setting the drag once the fishing is hooked is slower than flipping on the ant-reserve. In some other videos (carp) you’ll see me using the drag, as there I’m using rigs that hook the fish. I must admit though, I think I should have fished the drag when margin fishing at the start of this video (clamping down on the spool on the strike). The second fish nearly ripped the rod out my hands!!! 😂 Thanks for watching! 👍🎣🎣
