Say what you will about Facebook/Meta, but as a XR dev I am glad there's someone with deep pockets investing heavily and pushing the XR envelope.

They are and they aren't at the same exact time. They could do much more if they were focused on PC right now, but they want mobile devices.
Alot of what they advertise as the future is pretty dumb, like horizon worlds, but the fact is quest 2 is great for it's price. Pushing mass adoption is key for a technology.

Tethered to phone, or to servers in the cloud over super fast internet would be way better than having to be tethered to a PC.
Anyways their focus is on AR. Codenamed Orion, their first AR glasses are going to be super lightweight and theyre going to have mass market adoption. That will bring in the money needed to validate investing further in the tech. PC VR is niche and the market is not big enough to justify / sustain a company the size of Meta.
His VR will probably pass a Turing test sooner than he will.
Not a fan of Mark or his company but I do respect the leaps in technological advancements that they have managed to bring forth and their unwavering commitment to VR regardless of cost (Unlike some brands).
Also it's a small detail butt the way he speaks, Saying things like "That we know of" instead of assuming they are the first is nice to hear after listening to Apple stroke their ego a few weeks ago.
I usually do not root for these big mega corps, but I really really really hope that VR will become good enough to truly be immersive. Really excited about how the new generation of VR headsets will perform.
That looks and sounds awesome! Also cool that they show "early" prototypes without smooth casings etc. Few companies do that, let alone corporations.

I still do not understand, why you put all parts, so all weight and bulkiness on the head and not e.g. on something that would be on the neck. Putting all weight on the head is against human body - it affect the not so strong muscles on the neck and also all weight is moved when turning the head what affects inertia and make difficulties for construction, as it must be stronger to keep heavier headset on the head what again make it heavier... If you would put only the displays on the headset and batteries, computers... on the "necklace", it would be much more usable device.

This! Why do they insist on putting it all IN the visor?? If it can't currently fit in there just put it on something we can wear as a necklace or on our backs.

They’re just prototypes for now, they’re focusing on the important things (the video quality) since they’re not going to be publicly released. It just saves them a bit of money
We knew about half done and starburst but the HDR one is very interesting. Hope to see it in consumer tech soon
Meanwhile, Valve can't even keep SteamVR Base Stations in stock.
They can't even produce cables for their own headset, yet the entire pcvr master race is like "at least they offer you spare parts unlike Meta"
Valve is pure cancer, for vr or not. Shitting on Amazon for dominating markets is trendy, but nobody sees a single problem with valve steam being essentially the only marketplace for games.

This is awesome and refreshing to get a peek behind the curtain from meta. I for one am anxiously awaiting their Cambria headset and I'm stoked to see that even Cambria is really just a step in the right direction.

I actually see/read more clearly in high-res VR over real life, so the Butterscotch prototype would be really cool for accessibility.

Someone said it already, but say what you will about Mark and Facebook/Meta’s questionable privacy issues…they are making VR accessible and useful for the masses. It is reaching a point where using a VR headset is no longer an enthusiast’s game.

my only issue is that you won't be able to see your mom or roommate coming into the room when you are "mid session" wearing one of these bad boys. is there a way to make this so you can "see" people interrupting you?

Intrusion detection is already on the Quest 2 for some months now.

How does this work if a person wears glasses/lenses?

a lot of people with glasses can see just fine since the screens are relatively close to your eyes. for farsighted people and others that do need glasses to see in vr there are 3rd party companies that produce prescription corrective lenses that attach to the headset lenses.
What about the uOLED display one?

Sunshine and rainbows are great and all but his company doesn't make that. It does make vr and other technology however, so you should really expect "tons of tech talk". It's great that you want to make the world a better place but that doesn't line his pockets, and he didn't get his billions of dollars dumping cash into projects that don't make money.

...and none of it shows fully immersive wide displays. So while the graphical fidelity is cool where is the true wide aspect ratio that is necessary to bring us fully into the vr world?

#1 same tech as varjo? Normal display + a microdisplay half-silver mirrored into place. 3 years old ancient tech at this point, but maybe there is more than smoke and mirrors and they have a different approach.
#3 same HDR tech as psvr2 but still they say "they first we know of"? ( Sony has showed a working near final version of PSVR2 at GDC in closed room sessions , publicly reported on, and would surely have had prototypes, though maybe this was something old)
The formfactor of the holographic one looks nice, but doesn't all holographic tech have a lot of rainbowing? He says holographic displays but I'm assuming waveguides or holographic lenses. If is true holographic displays like Zebra Imagining prints that would be amazing tech but I think there is no chance, and it would be overkill too since your eyes are fixed relative to the screen so varifocal could likely get all the same advantages.
Yeah, there's no way he doesn't know about PSVR 2. He's at least heard the specs once, guaranteed. And nobody pointed it out at any point to him. lol though he could just say "at the time we built it"
The article has many more details. Roughly same as varjo (they used a tiny fov about 5-10 degrees bigger than varjo inset). On the HDR it is probably brighter than PSVR but could be being driven in a way that won't have longevity, as valve described doing for a prototype in 2015: ua-cam.com/video/Y20twV0m__8/v-deo.html
According to Roadtovr, this hdr headset is 20,000 nits, and the PSVR2 is likely going to be about 1000-2000 nits.
HDR TVs are about 3000 nits.
So this is even waaaay above and beyond what we've seen on any TV, let alone PSVR2 which will be lower brightness than that.
So, PSVR2 is HDR and it should be an incredible leap ahead, but not even close in terms of brightness compared to this sort of quality that truly replicates real life with no discernable difference.
@@zackmac5917 It's important to remember that when you play in VR it's like playing in a dark room with something shooting light right into your eyes from inches away. My LG C1 is around 700 nits and most of the content I watch is too bright to watch at max in a dark room from an optimal distance. For most scenes, 1000-2000 nits in VR would be more than enough. I'm pretty sure most people won't be able to afford a headset with 20,000 nit HDR anyway. Sounds like a business HMD.

We’ll be lucky if PSVR2 is over 500 nits (most VR headsets are under 300 nits). The Meta prototype is proper HDR: 20000 nits.
@@warm_beer What matters more is the perfect blacks. My LG C1 has enough brightness that anything not a horror movie is hard to watch in the dark for extended periods. We don't need, nor do most people care about being able to be blinded by their TVs--most people will settle for much less brightness because it's already really really good, especially with the color you get on OLED.

@@BCBtheBeastlyBeast Valve tested proper bright HDR in VR almost 5 years ago. They overclocked oled screen so much it only survived for a few days and it also needed active cooling. They had a sunny beach scene that felt very life like and was impossible to replicate in any other way. People who tried it were amazed and didn't want to use normal VR again. So we have empirical evidence that HDR in VR can be very powerful and not in a blinding way. But we are talking here about HDR that isn't currently possible outside of a lab.
