I like your site and as I complete My hives for my first season as a beekeeper I'm looking for answers for problems I may not ever have. I like your Varroa treatment plan with your three spring treatments and your fall/winter vapor treatment. So the varroa trap may be just unnecessary or jus worthless anyway ultimately I see my self using the trap designed for the hive beetle. I am located in Western Illinois and experience real winters so the hive beetle may be less of a problem here but none the less your trap is appealing. We do have hot summers here though. I could screen the rear entrance and solve some summer ventilation problems as well.I'll check your prices for ten frame hives. Keep up the good work. Thanks, Chad
the "varroa traps" you are referring to are just IPM screened bottom boards with a fancy name. They are designed to catch "mite fall" from bees grooming themselves and knocking the mites off. They are not designed to really trap a large majority of varroa so they are worthless as a "treatment method". Regarding hive beetles, I use exclusively Freeman style hive beetle traps on all my hives. You can see one here: www.funnybugbees.com/the-bee-shop/beekeeping-supplies/bee-pest-control/small-hive-beetle-traps/10-frame-small-hive-beetle-trap-w-integrated-bottom-board
No! but i'am the 1st one that invented it, and the 1st one to bring it out on UA-cam to help my friends His style is different from mine his was more of a screen bottom, not a oil trap! Mine built just like you show here, My design totally! I'am the one who made the 3/8 inch strips and for the back brace. and 2 short one for a entrance to be 7 inch long, The back brace made it flush for a hive body to stand on and give the back screen a place to staple too, and a swing out door. i also invented THE 1st air cooled bee suit THERE ALL BEING COPIED BY EVERY ONE! ID CARE I JUST WANT MY CREDIT AND GLORY! ITS MY IDEAL! That really tees me off some one to take credit for my ideals. MY SEEN EM IN COURT
Well if you Google hive beetle traps, you get "Freeman Style Hive Beetle Trap" as the design I make and use, and the one featured in this video. Hopefully, you can find Mr. Freeman one day and give em a piece of your mind lol.
Why? Freeman didn't invent it! I DID! he copied it. IF he invented a screen bottom, if and only if he did! i sure he copied off some one else like me CAUSE NO ONE CAME UP WITH THAT STYLE BUT ME!
No, you cant use 1/4" because nwer bees can fit through it, and they drown as well. You need something big enough for beetles, but to small for bees. hence #6 or #7 making sure to check the aperture size of the cloth you get so that it is between 3.00 and 3.2mm
Phillip in thinking about this conversation we had, ive come up with a new series called "subscribers choice mondays" ill be posting a video in a few minutes and it explains it, make sure to get your vote in for the pollen trap.
I personally do not like them due to the fact that i do a lot of hive manipulation and having that enormous thing hanging off the front of my hives gets in the way more than i can bare.
Great video !!! I have been enjoying all of your videos!! They are very good !!! Thanks !!! I have been trying to locate a store that sells those 3" x 13.5" x 19" roasting pans that you are using in your SHB traps. What grocery store are you purchasing that particular sized roasting pan from ???? I . cannot find that sized pan anywhere. I am planning to make several of your traps if I can find the right sized pan. Once I find the right pans, I will then place an order with you for several pieces of that special sized #6 hardware cloth !!! Thanks, Dale
Those were obtained from Food Lion. Though I dont use that design anymore. The problem we had with the manufactured sheet metal pans was remedied by moving to a thicker gauge metal. Ill be coming out with a video soon that works for both 8 and 10 frame hives and uses a standard half sheet baking tray, watch for it!
We sell both #6 and #7 with an average aperture of 3.750-3.2 mm, which is that exact size of a small hive beetle. If you need it please visit the pest control section of our website here: www.funnybugbees.com/hive-maintenance/pest-management/hardware-cloth-wire-mesh
I could not find where you show the list of wood and sized cuts for the wood here or on your web site. I left a msg at the .com yesterday. Looks nice but the lengths of the materials would help. Thanks, Jim
The measurements are 16 1/4" wide same length for the plywood..and the wood that goes laterally across the front that forms the bee landing, that should be 16 1/4" long as well, and the piece that goes inside the box laterally across the front should be 14 3/4". the small piece across the back should also be 16 1/4" everything else is the same. Hope this helps!
diatomaceous earth will only cause desication of larval stage SHB, it has no effect on adults. The carapace is too hard. DE works by causing small cuts in the skins of soft bodied insects, thereby causing dessication and the carapace of the adult is just to hard.
I have enjoyed several of your videos. But I had a problem making this bottom trap. I cut the wood from the list you have, but could not assemble it. I think the bottom piece of plywood should be 13 3/4" wide not 12 1/4".
Well i did make a mold and successfully made a good fiber glass oil pan for 10 frames hives. really for any thing even long boxes> to bad they don't make a dam foil pan for 10 frames I got the only one! now who want to copy it he hee
1. DE is a known carcinogen when inhaled which means special precautions are required to handle it. 2. DE is not very good at killing adult beetles, as the carapace is too hard for it to cause rapid desiccation. DE is great at killing the larval stage though but by the time the larva reach your trap, they have ruined the hive since they had to crawl down through your hive to reach it
ants cant eat holes in aluminum. What is most likely happening is that they are corroding, which happens when you put sugar solution into aluminum. The corrosion forms aluminum oxide, which is harmless to bees and people. It does however mean you need to replace the pans regularly.
@@FunnyBugBeesandWoodWorksI was just curious as I love in Scotland were guns are completely banned after the Dumblane massacre and it's weird seeing someone wearing one. I know it's in your constitution and not interested in the pro con laws just was not sure if it was nail gun or a pistol
Yes, I agree, Which is why i switched to using soapy water instead. it's WAY cheaper than mineral oil and also doesnt go rancid. Just put enough blue soap liquid in your water to turn the water a pale blue and thats more than enough to break the surface tension and prevent the beetles from walking on the water.
You must be one of those people who did not know that about 17 million Americans carry either concealed or open if their state allows. About 750k new permits are issued yearly. Since everyone has about a 25% chance of being involved in a violent crime in their lifetimes, and statistically those crimes happen at their home due to home invasions, it makes sense to carry. I digress, you can attempt to defend your wife and kids with a pillow off of your couch if you like, for me, ill stick to making sure I am can at least offer an equal force option to anything put against me and my family. If I am not successful then my wife and my oldest son are armed as well.
15+ minutes of very descriptive and useful how-to video and the only thing you notice is that he's armed? Ah, no, sorry, you also noticed the lumber and the tools, silly me...
Love this. Thanks for taking the time to put this demonstration together.
You are welcome tony!

you are Mr. Freeman? aka "freeman style hive beetle trap" ?

no but ill make that this weeks video!
Funny Bug Bees and Wood Works awesome !!

i have some front hive beetle traps called the beetle jail. just got them, so hopefully they work

pro-constitutionalist here :)
I have enjoyed several of your videos. But I had a problem making this bottom trap. I cut the wood from the list you have, but could not assemble it. I think the bottom piece of plywood should be 13 3/4" wide not 12 1/4".
you are 100% correct. Did i say 12 1/4" in the video, or did i put that measurement in the comments?
i see that i put 12 1/4" in the comments. I am sorry for that, and have corrected the mistake.
Well i did make a mold and successfully made a good fiber glass oil pan for 10 frames hives. really for any thing even long boxes> to bad they don't make a dam foil pan for 10 frames I got the only one! now who want to copy it he hee
When you get the 5, 8 and 10 frame molds done, contact me, I would rather use them than pans for our customers.
The link to purchase does not work.
Thanks for letting me know, Ive fixed the link. It is: www.funnybugbees.com/maintenance/bee-pest-management/small-hive-beetle-control/
u do a good job thanks u
Thanks Francis, I really appreciate it and hope I continue to bring you content you can use!
If u made the pan the size of the boughten one with rivets it would last a long time
agreed, though we found a supplier for a thicket gauge metal so we went back to using formed pans we make.
Use Diatomaceous Earth instead of oil and eliminate the mess and smell.

its better to paint the inside too can easy pressure wash it out
yes i paint the insides of mine.
Mustard Glue!
lol
These roasting pan get holes in them, i think the fire ants are eating holes in them with in 1 yr.> Only on the bottoms

Is that a gun?
depends on what you are looking at, but yes i do carry at all times for self-defense.

It is indeed a pistol, a semi-automatic .380 caliber pistol, which is my preferred caliber for personal defense.
@@FunnyBugBeesandWoodWorks never seen a gun in real life :-)
Mineral oil does not get rancid like vegetable oil
Yes, I agree, Which is why i switched to using soapy water instead. it's WAY cheaper than mineral oil and also doesnt go rancid. Just put enough blue soap liquid in your water to turn the water a pale blue and thats more than enough to break the surface tension and prevent the beetles from walking on the water.
do you use dawn dish soap
it doesnt matter what brand you use, dish soap breaks the waters surface tension. any brand will do.
Danielle Garrison blue dawn will take care of ants plus several other things
Good thing you’re armed I wouldn’t want one of those pieces of plywood or band saw lurking around your shop to harm you
